Hospital Bag Packing List for Mom & Baby

I finally started packing my hospital bag yesterday. It’s a good thing I haven’t gone into labor because I’ve been acting like I have all the time in the world until James Walker arrives. My due date is March 3 and I’m scheduled for a repeat c-section on March 3. Just a few more days to get things done around here.

I decided to recreate my hospital bag packing list from a few years ago to make it easier to read. Nothing has really changed. In addition to clothes for the baby and me, toiletries, and things to keep your feet warm and off the hospital floor, I include things like notebooks (for keeping track of thank you notes I may need to write) and folders (for keeping up with important documents.) I just like to be prepared. I like to bring a few pillows- especially after a c-section, so I can make sure I’m well-supported and that getting in and out of the bed is as easy as possible.

I didn’t list specific brands or links, but I do have some favorites that I’ve used over the years. But I know everyone has their favorites and their preferences. This list is just a guideline of some things that I don’t like to be without while in the hospital. I’m expecting a 3-day stay, so while the packing list may seem long, I want to be prepared for all three days.

I’m curious… what are the must-have items on your hospital packing list?

Pharmacy information and a point person for “just in case.” Last March my son was born with severe PPHN and I was discharged 24 hours after a c-section when my son had the first of two hospital transfers. We were not equipped to deal with the situation we were in never mind the dozens of well-meaning friends and family who wanted updates. It would have been much easier if we’d had a designated “gatekeeper to keep people informed and control what was put on social media.

Sorry, Im not trying to be a downer, it just would have been easier if we’d had a contingency plan in place.

Yes! A point person is good in any situation πŸ™‚ My mom has always assumed that role, so I’m hopeful she’ll do the same again tomorrow πŸ™‚

a simple extension cord b/c my iphone doesn’t hold a charge well and the outlets were not close enough for me to charge my phone and use it at the same time!

Thanks for sharing your list Erin. I’m due with #2 on March 22nd and trying to get myself prepped and ready in advance so I can “enjoy” the last few weeks with my first little guy. (Like you though, I’m totally acting like I have all the time in the world – especially when it comes to work and big projects around the house! Haha.) Just curious what you are planning to wear home from the hospital. WIth my first baby, I took a cute maternity dress, but I was SO swollen and my milk came in that day, and I was MISERABLE. I had to change clothes almost the second we walked in the door because I was so uncomfortable and needed to nurse. This time I want to wear something comfortable and nursing friendly, but also at least a little bit cute. You always have great style… I’d love to know what you are wearing.
    Thanks and BEST WISHES!

I’m actually planning to wear black yoga pants, a black nursing tank, and a long comfy cardigan. (It’s actually the “blardigan” that has been on Pinterest Told Me To so many times. Love that thing!) It’s supposed to be a little chilly that day and it’s not super stylish, but definitely comfy and better than just pajamas πŸ™‚ I’m sure I’ll also be in maternity yoga pants! haha

I liked having my own towel. The ones at the hospital are too small and too scratchy. Having a big, fluffy beach towel was perfect!

As an OB nurse, I notice a lot of women forget blow dryers and curling irons and straighteners…we have a couple extra on the unit but not one in every room. I don’t know how your unit is stocked with such things.

Also, a good book to read is nice to have on hand for when you have some quiet moments Especially your bible and journal. What better time to pour out your thankfulness to the creator of life! πŸ™‚ Not to mention daytime TV is AWFUL!!

Enjoy your special time with your new son! May he rise up to be a man of great faith.

Yes! Another great reminder. I don’t know how I left that off. I do have my blow dryer and curling iron and brushes packed. πŸ™‚ And I always bring my notebook/journal with me for recording feedings, gifts, and just special thoughts, but bringing my Bible is a great suggestion. I have it on my phone, but the book is good, too. πŸ™‚
