Nat Kat Designs Giveaway

One of my favorite resources for Hudson’s party was Nat Kat Designs. Natalie went to Louisiana Tech, like I did, and we have a lot of mutual friends. She has made other things for Hudson in the past and I was so happy that she was willing to make some fun party decorations for us, too.

The Nat Kat Designs items at Hudson’s party:

The water bottle labels (I went back and removed the original label and replaced it with these. Natalie’s labels are adhesive labels)

The Green Eggs and Ham book cover painting

The 1-12 numbers for Hudson’s monthly monkey photos

The “Happy Birthday Hudson” banner on the mantle

The adorable Celebrate painting

To help continue celebrating Hudson’s birthday, Nat Kat Designs is offering a lucky Blue-Eyed Bride reader their very own, custom painted “Celebrate” sign. The winner will get to choose his or her colors for the sign.

To enter, leave a comment on this post just telling me what colors you’d like to use in your “Celebrate” sign. The winner will be announced next week!

party planning tips

I was an event planner before I decided to stay at home with Hudson, but that doesn’t mean that I’ve done anything that you can’t do. Planning a party is about being organized. You may think that you’re not creative and you can’t do it, but anyone can be creative. It’s about being resourceful and looking for different ways to make a statement.

I’ve come up with what I think is a good list of things to keep in mind when planning a party.

1. Start early. You want to avoid stress. With a baby, you don’t want to be running around like crazy two weeks before the party because you’ve waited until the last minute.

2. Decide on a theme and/or colors. This will help you know what to do. If you have a theme, think of ways you can expand on the theme. If you just use colors, think of ways you can fill the space with those colors.

3. Keep your eyes open. When you’re at Target, look around for things that go with your colors. Start doing this months in advance. I found all of the green buckets back in January. I knew I’d need them and I’d use them. At the time, I wasn’t exactly sure how I’d use them, but the color was right and I snatched them up. Look in the dollar bins and the seasonal departments. If something fits the color then grab it. If you start doing this months in advance, you won’t have as much trouble finding something when it comes down to the last minute.

4. Make a list. Initially, you need a list broken up into categories: decorations, food, drinks, extras. Think of the fun ways you can use these categories to expand on your theme/colors. We chose to have only green and orange food. Then we had the bbq and ham, which obviously isn’t green or orange. But a vegetable platter of only green veggies and orange veggies. Green deviled eggs. Green and orange candy. Use anything to fit the theme.

Then make lists/timelines two weeks out from the party to outline your tasks. It helps to stay organized. Make a list of what you should do a week out. Make a list of what you should do the day before and the day of the party.

5. Be original. Use blogs and magazines for inspiration, but don’t take someone else’s party and just replicate it. Make your party your own. It’s more fun when you know you did something and it fits your personality and the personality of the guest of honor. Everyone has a creative bone in their body. Find yours.

6. Think of your guests. If you invite adults to a child’s party, make sure the party is also adult-friendly. Have some adult food and adult beverages. If it’s an adult’s party and you invite kids, make it kid-friendly. Have a table for kids and food for kids. Everyone wants to feel comfortable when they attend a party, so make sure you have something for all of your guests.

7. Get help! Delegate! It’s impossible to have a huge party without getting help. My mother-in-law makes amazing cake balls and deviled eggs, so I asked her to do those things. My mom has connections for buying candy in bulk and already owns all of the containers for the candy. She can also tie a mean bow, so she picked up all of the ribbon in the appropriate colors and got to tying!

8. Make an outline/diagram of your space. I made a list for each room in the house. Kitchen: deviled eggs, ham, beverage dispensers, Green Eggs and Ham sign. Breakfast room: barbecue, mac ‘n cheese, all heavy food, paper poms, drink buckets. Dining room: centerpieces, candy, cupcakes, smash cake.

If you do this in advance, then the day of the party and the day before, you’re ready. You know exactly where things need to go.

9. Start setting up early. Don’t wait until the day of the party to decorate. Do the decorating two nights before. The night before, set out all of your dishes and get the party “staged.” The day of you can just put out all of the food and put the finishing touches on everything. Also- if you’re using balloons, wait until the day of to blow up the balloons and put them out.

10. More is more! When you think you’re all finished decorating, take a look around add something else. If you’re trying to make a punch with color, then find as many ways as possible to use that color. Always add more! When we finished decorating we had a couple of unused buckets and poms that had to go in one of the closets, but we were prepared. We had lots of stuff and found creative ways to use everything.

Those are my best party-planning tips. Do you have anything that you would add to the list?

Green Eggs and Ham birthday party: the birthday boy and his friends

I thought I’d just share some of the fun pictures of Hudson and his/our friends from Saturday. I asked Wendy from A Southern Accent to come take pictures of the party, so I could relax and enjoy the day. Also, Wendy is a fantastic photographer and did a much better job than I ever could have done!

“It’s my birthday and my mom gave me her old, broken cell phone!”

“While nobody’s looking, I’m going to snatch up some chocolate covered sunflower seeds!”

Anne and Mac– such a cutie!

Love this of Hudson with his PC and KK

Bennett trying the green deviled eggs

So happy we got a bounce house for the older kiddos

Explaining to him that it’s easier to walk without shoes and he probably shouldn’t eat his shoes

Playing with Poppie

Getting some sugar from his KK

Happy birthday to Hudson! (I had to fight back the tears!)

Slowly trying it out…

Mmm…. I think I like this!

I love cake!

Family portrait! Someone was sleepy.

After all of our friends left, Hudson and his Daddy jumped in the bounce house.

I think he had a pretty good day!

Green Eggs and Ham birthday party: the details

These posts are going to have to be broken up into two or three parts because there are so many things to see! This post is just going to be the details: decorations, food, etc.

Warning: picture overload!

All photos by Wendy Woodall of A Southern Accent!

Because they have such a spacious house, my in-laws offered to let us hold the party at their house. We kind of took over and they were such good sports about letting me move things around to make room for party decorations.

We had two of these cute little orange pinwheels outside with fun green and orange ribbon tied to them. And my mom added the ribbon and the Green Eggs and Ham book to the wreath.

When guests walked in, we asked them to sign the “guest book” which was copy of Green Eggs and Ham. I wanted Hudson to have a keepsake from the big day of who was there to celebrate his first year!

In the house, immediately to the right of the front door is the dining room where we set up the dessert table. My mom is a candy buffet master and hauled all of her beautiful containers all the way from Dallas. We also had cake balls and cupcakes in addition to all of the jelly beans, M&Ms, gummy orange and lime slices, circus peanuts, lollypops, and rock candy.

We used plain white table cloths, but cut out circles in green and orange to make it more festive.

Heading into the family room, we hung an adorable banner with Hudson’s name on it.

The family room is such a large space and we needed a good way to get the green and orange in there, so I decided to rent a helium tank and buy two packs of green and orange balloons. My dad, my FIL, and I spent a large part of the morning on Saturday blowing up, tying, and attaching ribbon to the balloons.

We played the video I made for Hudson in the family room and decorated the mantle with orange flowers in green buckets. I found the paper umbrellas and paper lanterns and decided to use them to decorate the fireplace. The adorable “Happy Birthday Hudson” banner is one of my favorite things!

On the back wall of the family room, I displayed all of Hudson’s monthly pictures in green and orange buckets filled with jelly beans. The orange polka dot table runner added such a great splash of color and the “Celebrate” painting looked perfect there! (p.s. I’ll be doing a giveaway based on that “Celebrate” painting later this week!)

The main food was in the kitchen and at the breakfast table. We served hot dogs, barbecue, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and of course, green (deviled) eggs and ham!

The party favors, in addition to the candy, were sugar cookies iced to look like a green ham!

We had a lot of fun with the drinks! In the canisters, we served Arnold Palmers or “adult lemonade” and regular lemonade in the other canister. We found cute green and white striped straws to go with the drinks.

Then in green buckets on stands, we had Jones soda in orange cream and green apple flavor. We also had bottled water (that I individually labeled), beer, and juice boxes.

At the end of the party, we passed around creamsicles and limesicles made with either orange Crush, orange sherbet, and vanilla ice cream or 7-Up, lime sherbet, and vanilla ice cream. Like a Coke float, but even better! So yummy!

my beautiful cousin with her orange creamsicle!

The party was truly a labor of love. Between TC and me, my parents, and TC’s parents, everyone worked so hard to make this a great party. We are so thankful for the love and support that Hudson has all around him.

It took a few months to get everything planned and brought together from rolling silverware at night while watching The Bachelorette and cutting out foam circles during nap time to my mother-in-law making deviled eggs and cake balls to my mom making gorgeous bows, arranging flowers, and driving halfway across the country to celebrate with us!

Tomorrow I’ll show more pictures of the fun people that were there and you can see lots of pictures of the cute birthday boy!
