inspired by The Dish

I can say that, as a blogger, I have suffered from writer’s block quite a few times. I often look to what I’m reading and what I’m watching to inspire me to come up with a new post. I like to share recipes with all of you, but I also find myself in a big recipe rut, too. New content for my blog often starts as new content at my dinner table. And after years of looking at the same old cookbooks, I’ve been looking for something else.

I was recently introduced to ConAgra Foods’ online resource called The Dish, specifically designed for bloggers. Bloggers are exposed to the latest information and insights to help us come up with blog posts, recipe ideas that lead to blog posts, and new food industry trends.
One of my favorite areas of The Dish is the Recipe Resources. A recent post in this category lists a thorough group of foods that are in season that would be great ideas for blog content. Because peaches are in season in August, it would be relevant to blog about your favorite peach pie recipe or peach ice cream recipe.
It’s easy things like this that are so simple, but really help cure writer’s block! It’s such a valuable resource for all bloggers.
The Dish gives bloggers access to kitchen experts. Bloggers are also given blogging tips and cooking advice from celebrity chefs, industry leaders, bloggers, and moms.
The dish has helped me as a blogger by showing me how to think outside the box. It has shown me how to look at each little part of my day and each part of my life and think about how I can turn that event, recipe, or idea into a blog post.
I especially love the First Look, First Taste section that gives bloggers an early peek at ConAgra Foods’ newest promotions and products. And you can request free samples!
The greatest thing is that this information is available to all bloggers!
All you need to do is visit The Dish and sign up to become a member of The Dish. All you need is a blogging URL. You can also follow @ConAgraDish on Twitter. Another way you can participate is by requesting product samples from the First Look, First Taste section.
You can be entered to win a $50 Visa gift card just by telling me what your favorite section of The Dish is and why.

strong willed city!

Note from Erin: My friend Courtney is sharing her heart with you today. I have talked about Courtney before, but here’s a little bit of background. She is the super talented creator behind Lil Light o’ Mine ABC scripture cards, which are just one of my absolute favorite things for kids and families. She also writes a beautiful blog for moms and I encourage all of you to check in with her daily because she has some real wisdom to share. She has a heart for the Lord and for raising families in the word.

So, in my house. It’s a battle of some strong wills. We have three girls with serious personality and a gracious dad who just holds us altogether somehow.

Some days, it’s Larson’s world and we’re all living in it.

Some days, it’s Ella’s world and we’re living in it.

(Not sure where these poses are coming from – that’s another post.)

Some days, it is DEFINITELY mom’s world and you better live in it or else…

Very few days, it’s poor daddy’s world… like Father’s Day and his birthday.

And, the sooner everyone figures out the game plan or whose will is stronger on that day – the smoother we are operating. It is funny to me that I am writing this for public viewing and admitting it.

In my head and my heart, I know that the easiest way would be to surrender control and the reigns to God. I have these same battles with Him. I believe I’m more capable of the timeline and the plan and the tiny details of our lives. Then, something will happen that lets me know LOUD & CLEAR that nope, in fact, it’s God world and we are living in it.

A huge storm, a death, my plan destroyed, an unexpected blessing, a better plan exposed and it stops my breath for a minute. It shows me over and over again that TRUSTING in something bigger than myself is the only way to go. Why would I ever want to miss what God has planned for those that love Him?

I can see this truth pan out as I try to parent these little wild women. I know what’s best for them. And, there are days they just need to trust me and I will lead them. There are days I am just being headstrong and I just need to let them choose.

Recently, I believed they were going to be the world’s most elite dancers in America because I LOVED dancing and I didn’t get to be a Rockette. That’s great parenting, right? I was ready to sign them up for Fall dance lessons.

So, naturally they want to be gymnasts.

So, who wins this life-threatening decision for a 5-year-old and 3-year-old this Fall? They do.

I want the recitals, the studio, the costumes and the moments. Those little boogers want to be Gabby and Aly and flip and twirl and swing and jump. They are passionate and begging. So, we marched up to that gym and signed them up for their one activity for Fall. Gymnastics!

This won’t be the last time we wrestle through their will, my will and His will. This time, the stakes weren’t very high. Sometimes, the stakes will be very high.

It’s “Strong Willed City” at our house!

What about yours?

How I Make It Work {a guest post from Jennifer from Life in the Green House}

*Today’s post is from my dear friend Jennifer from Life in the Green House. Jennifer is such a good friend with a heart of gold. She is a beautiful writer and writes about life with her adorable toddler, Braylen. Jennifer is very creative and has great ideas and recipes that she shares on her blog. My favorite posts of Jennifer’s are the ones where she so openly shares what’s on her heart. I hope you’ll hop over there and visit her!

Let me give you a little background about myself. I blog over at Life In The Green House about random happenings in our home. I have a tiny toddler who pretty much rules the house, or so she thinks.

And I teach kindergarten.

That’s right, I’m a working mom.

It sounds weird for me to even say that since I’m sitting here at 1:30 in the afternoon typing this post in my Nike running shorts and a well worn t-shirt from college. Actually, I’m on summer break for about another two weeks and I am enjoying every minute despite the nearly unbearable temps. But really I’m no stranger to the stay at home mom gig, I didn’t go back to work until my daughter was nearly two.

This isn’t going to be a post about which is harder because let me tell you, I’ve tried both and they are equally challenging in different ways. I wish I could tell you that one side or the other grows grass in a slightly greener hue. But I can’t.

The truth is when I stayed home I questioned myself as a mother and I wondered if going back to work was the solution. Now that I’m back at work I feel the same way, I’m in a different position but I face those same nagging feelings each morning when I leave.

I think that once we become mothers a piece of our heart is literally laid on our chest in the delivery room and we are never, ever the same. So when I decided to go back to work I felt like I was leaving a piece of my heart at home each day. But I didn’t dislike going to work, I actually fell in love with the routine and structure it provided for us. I think there will be many times as she gets older that I experience the same tugging of my heart and that just comes with being a mother.

Life can be chaotic, our calendars tend to be full and most days I feel like I’m running in circles. Early on I knew I would have to make some changes and implement some organization in order to help us stay grounded. Whether you’re a working mom, stay at home mom or work from home mom, I think these can help all moms:

  • Create a home organization notebook. I saw how much Erin loved her  notebook and decided to create my own version. I’m being completely honest when I tell you that we use ours all of the time. It has been such a big help especially since I went back to work.
  • Organize your life. I use the Erin Condren Life  Planner but really it doesn’t matter what brand of calendar you have just as long as you have something that works for you and your family. I write down everything in my calendar from daily to-do lists and family goals to appointments and social activities.
  • Organize your home. We moved at the beginning of summer and I am slowly trying to organize and unpack. I created a Kitchen Command Center to help us stay organized and I have several more projects like this planned. I function best when everything has a place.
  • Family Meals. I started meal planning every Sunday morning using the printable from The Project Girl and we sit down and eat dinner together each night during the week. I also cook several freezer meals a month to use on the days when I just don’t feel like cooking. We are a family of three which makes it easy to half recipes for things like enchiladas and casseroles and eat one half for dinner and freeze the other half.
Do you have any tips for me? How do you stay organized and sane during the week?

greetings from the gulf coast!

It’s a beautiful day on the Gulf coast. We are all absolutely loving being here. Just being here together as a family makes this the best summer vacation ever.

Almost all of my childhood/ adolescent vacation memories happened here on the Gulf coast and I’m happy that my boys are getting to start some of the same memories.

We’ve been enjoying time in the lazy river. Cooking meals together. Waiting on Carrie’s luggage. (Carrie is Walker’s girlfriend, and the newest addition to our trips and we’re so excited to have her here.)

We’re taking naps. Building sand castles. And watching the Olympic coverage together as a family.

And when the afternoon storms come in, we all go inside and enjoy an excuse to get out of the sun for a bit.

I have a nice little stack of “goals” for this trip. I doubt I’ll read every word of all of these books, but the thought of doing it just makes me happy. I love time when I can sit and just read. And the extended naps after an exhausting day on the beach allow for lots of reading time.

The new reading plan for She Reads Truth was announced early this morning, and I enjoyed starting Proverbs with a gorgeous view of God’s most remarkable creation. I hope you’ll all read it, too. Proverbs is one of my favorite books of the Bible and I’m excited to follow along with so many of you as we share what we’re learning together.

I’ll be taking a few days “off” as I enjoy time with my family. I have three incredibly gifted writers lined up to share with you what’s on their hearts. I hope that you’ll take the time to read what they have to say so you can see why I love them all so much. And share your thoughts with them in the comments.

I hope you all have a beautiful week!
