music to my ringing ears

For a while recently, I had reached this point in my time as a mother where I was in this quiet little place. Hayes was this sweet, content toddler. And when Hudson reached 3.5 years old, we turned a corner. There was peace and cooperation.

And then as Hayes’s speech therapy caught on, we added a little more noise to the home. Okay, a lot of noise.

But the noise is in the form of sweet, intentional words from Hayes that we prayed for and waited on for months. In fact, Hudson can’t help but do his cute little grin every time Hayes attempts to say a new word. He’s not making fun of him. He’s just so surprised and thinks it’s about as cute as I do. (Which is pretty stinking cute.)

His new favorite word is “Mommy.” Sweet, right?

Yes, it’s sweet. But there’s a little problem. “Mommy!” isn’t as sweet when it’s screamed in rapid succession. (Imagine Stewie Griffin in that ad they used to show on TBS all the time.)

I know deep in my heart that I will survive the toddler years again, but every time I hear Hayes start shouting “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” I doubt myself. Especially at 6:30 p.m. when we are counting down the seconds for Daddy to walk in the door.

I know that Hayes just wants my attention and that’s the way he thinks he needs to get it. But it hurts everyone’s ears and it makes my shoulders tense up. And when we put Hayes to bed at night, I realize that I can slowly relax my shoulders and bring them away from my ears.

I absolutely love that his favorite word is “Mommy.” And if his favorite word was “Daddy” and he screamed that all day, I know that we’d all be on edge just the same. Coming unglued bit by bit.

Thank goodness my husband is a “together” man. Because I do not have it all together.

But you know what? In a year, I will have to look back on this post to even remember that Hayes did that. And then I’ll laugh about it. And I will physically ache for my 21 month old baby boy who loves to laugh and run and try to jump and bounce while he shouts for his Mommy to look at him and so he can say, “Hewwooo, Mommy” or “peek-boo, Mommy!”

My sweet Hayes who falls asleep in the car on the way home from school and nuzzles his head into my shoulder as we walk into the house. And before I can lie him down in his crib, he’ll look at me and give me the sleepiest grin.

My sweet Hayes who used to be so content and never made a peep, is now showing us so many answers to prayers with his words and his voice and his crazy wild man activity.

It’s this place where I am so afraid to wish away the small things that bring headaches because time will take the sweet smells and funny giggles with it.

a confession… and my 10 favorite Valentine's Day movies

Okay, girls and guys. (I think I know of maybe three guys that read this blog.) I have a little confession to make. And most of you probably won’t agree with me.

One of Todd’s favorite movies is Top Gun. I think he thinks it’s a good “date night” movie because it’s got stuff for the guy’s guy and stuff for the girls. But what he didn’t realize until recently is that Top Gun is one of my least favorite movies. *Gasp* I know.

Maybe it’s because I didn’t see it until I was in college, and by then it had been all hyped up as one of the great movies ever, so I was just a little let down. Maybe it’s just the general cheesiness and constant man-laughing and high fives. Maybe it’s the unrealistic love story between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. Or because by the time I saw the movie, Tom Cruise had shown his true colors on Oprah’s couch, and he just wasn’t all that appealing to me.

But I’m just not a fan. I’m so sorry. I love 80s movies. I still love Dirty Dancing and Footloose, and know that many people don’t. (Though, I’m not sure why!) I was introduced to those movies as a child (probably too young of a child), but I’ve loved them ever since.

But in honor of the upcoming Valentine’s Day, I wanted to tell y’all my top 10 favorite romantic movies. And they really aren’t in any particular order.

1. Serendipity

It’s safe to say that I like John Cusack. I love this movie because it’s a little bit different, it’s sweet, and it’s set in New York City- and embraces New York City. I love the characters and “chase” aspect of this movie. (Although, for the poor souls who get dumped in this movie, it’s not all that romantic.)

2. Pretty Woman

I could seriously watch this movie every time it’s on TV. I can quote it, sing “King of Wishful Thinking” from the soundtrack, and I always wanted that brown and white polka dot outfit with the hat.

3. When Harry Met Sally

I love the story of the best friends who should have always been together and finally end up realizing that they both love each other. And it’s just hilarious. My college roommate and I would frequently quote the scene at the end when Billy Crystal tells her why he loves her at the New Year’s Eve party.

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out.”

4. Definitely, Maybe

This one is a little unconventional, but I think it is such a fun movie. And Ryan Reynolds. Seriously. The love he has for his daughter is so endearing and I could seriously watch this movie over and over.

5. Sixteen Candles

Jake Ryan. And the scene at the end with them sitting on the table eating birthday cake. I can’t even tell you how many times I watched this movie in high school.

“You don’t spell it, son, you eat it!”

6. Bull Durham

Okay, maybe another one that’s a little bit unconventional, but I love a good baseball movie. This one is a good blend of comedy, romance, and drama.

7. Only You

This movie made me want to visit Venice. Robert Downey, Jr. and Marisa Tomei. Such a great story!

8. Say Anything

Lloyd Dobler standing there with his boom box playing Peter Gabriel trying to win back Diane Court.

“What I really want to do with my life – what I want to do for a living – is I want to be with your daughter. I’m good at it. ”

9. You’ve Got Mail

The adorable Meg Ryan haircut and the fantastic Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks chemistry. I also love the scene at the end when Tom Hanks walks up with Brinkley, the Golden Retriever. Who doesn’t love a Golden Retriever?

10. Notting Hill

Okay, this movie. It has the greatest characters and such a romantic story.

“I’m just a girl. Standing in front of a boy. Asking him to love her.”

Gah, love it. And I love the scene at the end with them on the park bench. I won’t say anymore in case you haven’t seen it, but please. Watch this movie.

What are you favorite romantic movies?

reads for your weekend

I love reading other blogs, and I love sharing some of my favorite posts with you every week. (Although I took a little break for a while.)

The blogosphere has some amazing writers, and I continue to be inspired each week!

1. When Mama Ain’t Happy by Lisa-Jo Baker

This post in response to some of the Super Bowl entertainment and Super Bowl ads was so spot-on for me. I wanted to give her a standing ovation.

2.  Sparkly Green Earrings Giveaway by Big Mama

So Melanie Shankle’s book came out this week, and I am SO excited to start reading mine. I just can’t wait for it to arrive. Go visit her blog to enter to win a copy of the book and a pair of green Danielle Kendra Scott earrings.

3. Herlong and Associates by House of Turquoise

So I only follow a handful of design blogs, because my taste is kind of picky. But House of Turquoise always hits it out of the park. And this latest home feature is just absolutely my cup of tea. I’d move into this South Carolina house in a heart beat.

4. A Sweet Little Playhouse Tucked Under the Stairs by Hooked on Houses

I immediately want to build a playhouse under the stairs. These little play spaces are absolutely adorable!

5. The State of Weight {Postpartum and Beyond} by I Love You More Than Carrots

An honest and very inspiring account of postpartum weight loss. Seriously, this will make you want to get moving! AP looks fantastic!

Please feel free to leave comments and share your favorite posts from the week with me! I love finding new blogs to read.

Saturday brain dump

1. What is about the act of sighing that just makes us feel so much better? I sigh. A lot, apparently. And each time I do it, I can just feel a load lift off.

2. Sometimes I think that 3.5 is the best age ever! That we’ve turned the corner away from tantrums and fits. And then I remember that boys will be boys and kids are kids. And jealousy strikes and all of a sudden we’re in the middle of a tantrum.

3. And, goodness. Maybe it’s because Hayes is my second toddler, so there’s no point in repeating things I’ve already said. But toddlers are seriously into everything. He. Touches. Everything.

4. I saw Silver Linings Playbook today and absolutely loved it! Todd and Hudson went to the Monster Jam (monster trucks) event at the Colonial Life Arena, and Todd’s parents were kind enough to hang out with Hayes while he napped so I could go to the movie by myself. Seeing movies alone is really one of my favorite things to do. And I highly recommend seeing Silver Linings Playbook.

5. My mom and I are planning a little getaway to NYC for a few weeks from now. I just mentioned to her over Christmas how I’d love for us to go together again soon, and we were able to make it happen. All we really want to do is see a few shows, so we’re making plans. Do you all have any theater recommendations?

6. I’ve recently rediscovered my love for Felicity and I just started watching season 4 again. I could seriously watch that show over and over again.

7. And Smash returned this week! I’m so excited to see what happens with Karen, Ivy, Derek, and Julia! Do you watch Smash? I thought Jennifer Hudson was great this week! Two Idol rejects in one show? I love it. And I still don’t like Ivy. Are we supposed to like Ivy? I can’t figure it out.

8. Hayes has been so funny lately, and he says “okay” to everything. We’ll ask a question and he says “okay.” We’ll tell him that we’re going to go to RC and PC’s house and he says, “okay.” I love hearing his little voice. It was absolutely worth the wait.

9. Hudson has been really agreeable, and when we ask him to do something for us, his common response is, “Sure, I can do that!” He’s agreeable and enthusiastic. 3.5 isn’t so bad at all.

Okay, so have you seen any good movies lately? Do you watch Smash? Are you reading any good books?
