Carrolls do Disney World: Day 1

Okay, so here’s the plan. For the sake of my memory-keeping purposes, I am going to recap all of the days in a few posts and then I will do one post full of information and tips. Restaurants, hotel, transportation, Magic Bands, Fast Pass +, etc. If you have any questions before Friday, ask them in the comments and I will be sure and answer them in Friday’s post!

Because this was our first time to take our kids to Disney World, we are clearly not experts, but I am happy to share our experience and what worked for us.

Back around Christmas in 2012, I started talking to Todd about taking the kids to Disney World for their gift for Christmas 2013. I wanted to go in January after MLK Day because most kids are in school and mine are still at an age where I can take them out of school to do these kinds of things.

So last May, I booked our trip. I contacted a local Disney travel agent (who is paid on commission by Walt Disney World and not paid by the traveler! Score!) and talked to her about our budget, how long we wanted to stay, the meals we wanted, etc. She was such a huge help! I am happy to share her information with anyone who wants it.

We had originally planned to go for four or five days, but after thinking about my kids’ ages and their ability to stay out all day long, we decided to stay for six nights/seven days to make the most of our trip.

So let’s get going with the recap!

Day 1 – Travel Day and Downtown Disney

We decided to drive to Disney World. Our trip from Columbia, SC was right around 7 hours. We brought our own double BOB instead of renting one. We didn’t have a dinner reservation that day, so we weren’t in a huge hurry, but wanted to get there before sunset.

We finally entered the big gates and everyone was so excited!

I love that Disney World is its own city. Seriously. It has its own infrastructure and roads and signs. And it’s enormous! We found our way to Wilderness Lodge and it felt like being tucked away in a beautiful, secluded mountain retreat in the middle of Florida.

We made our way inside… I definitely should have taken pictures of the beautiful lodgey lobby. Wow. It felt so homey and it was just so quiet and beautiful. We grabbed our Magic Bands and the nice gal at the front desk activated them. We used our Magic Bands to enter our hotel room, use Fast Passes, pay for our food, pay for anything else we needed. It was so easy and seamless.

After parking our car and getting into our room, we went to catch the bus to go to Downtown Disney. The bus ride made quite a few stops on the way to Downtown Disney and it took us about an hour to get there, which I heard was expected. But Downtown Disney was the perfect way to ease into the Disney experience.

We rushed to get our name on the list to eat at the T-Rex Cafe. The wait was incredibly long, but we just didn’t make a reservation for our first night because we weren’t really sure what our plans would be. We waited about 45 minutes for a table… and this was during the slow season. There was a fun place for the boys to “dig for fossils” and they had a lot of fun with that.

The restaurant had huge dinosaurs that “come to life” every 15 minutes all over the restaurant. Hudson was a little creeped out at first and then he got over it. It was a fun, mostly kid-friendly experience. Super interactive and loud, which is great for my boys!

IMG_8065

The boys would have been fine with just going into the Disney stores everywhere and thought that this was all there was to Disney World! They were in heaven! IMG_8077

We shopped around a little, but told the boys that on the very last day they could pick out one favorite thing that they wanted, but until then we wouldn’t be buying anything. That seemed to appease them in the midst of all the fun things to look at!

We hopped back on the bus and headed back to the Wilderness Lodge. I was thankful that we didn’t bring our stroller to Downtown Disney. Back at the hotel, the boys were super excited about their fun bunk beds. Hayes still sleeps in a crib and this was his first experience in a real big boy bed. It all went surprisingly well!

Tomorrow, I’ll recap our first day at Magic Kingdom and our day at Epcot.

2013 trip to Orange Beach, Alabama

orange beach 2

Coming home from vacation and getting back into the swing of things always feels like such a shock. We spent the last week in Orange Beach, Alabama. It’s where I vacationed every summer when I was growing up in Louisiana, and we still made the drive down there when we moved to Indiana.

South Carolina beaches are much closer to us, but I still like to get to Orange Beach once a year, if possible. My parents joined us again this year, and it was so wonderful.

We stayed at Turquoise Place this year, and the kids absolutely loved it. When we do vacation, we are truly on vacation. We stay in and cook. We spend nap times on the beach or on the balcony. We just keep it as low key as possible.

Hudson loves everything about the beach. He loves the pool, the ocean, the sand, the lazy river. Our condo building had a lazy river that the boys got the biggest kick out of. Hudson has been swimming so well this summer, that it made us even more comfortable with him being so brave.  (He also tans so quickly! How did that happen when Todd and I are both oh so pale?)

Hayes loved everything in moderation. He could take a little bit of sand and a little bit of ocean. He loved the pool, but when he was hungry, he was done. If we kept him snacking and kept his belly full, he was the happiest camper you ever did see. He even liked the lazy river a little bit.

They got to stay up late and watch lots of Mickey Mouse movies. My parents and Todd and I all went to bed soon after the boys did every night. Central time still confuses me so much! I’m not used to going to bed after the 10:00 news!

We all took the boys out to play miniature golf one night. Neither of them had ever played putt putt, so it was an exciting time. It was hot as all get out, but we loved watching the boys. (If you follow me on Instagram, you got to see some pretty stinking cute videos of Hayes “playing” mini golf.)

Hayes loved to just walk over and drop it in the hole. And Hudson basically shoveled it in with his putter. But they loved it and cried when it was over.  (The rest of us were just thankful to get out of the heat!) My boys were so sweaty that night.

My boys absolutely adore their grandparents, and that was definitely the best part of the trip. We don’t get to live in the same city as my parents, so our visits together are so special.

We sat on the balcony a few times a day and read or just watched the dolphins in the morning. My dad said that the last day of a beach vacation just has the saddest feeling looming over it. And it’s true. The last day always feels so sad because you know it’s ending.

Another really great part of the trip was that I got to see two of my dearest friends. Megan was in Orange Beach with her family and Nina was in town with her family. Megan, Nina, baby Caroline, and I all met up for lunch at The Gulf. It was such a fun and cute little place to eat. And the company was fantastic!

orange beach 8

Todd and I had dinner with Nina and Joe at Cobalt one night. It was such a fun double date and so great for Todd and Joe to finally meet after all these years!

The next night, Nina came to our place with her family for us to eat an amazing meal that her mom prepared! We had gone to the best restaurant in town the night before, and Kiki’s meal was ten times better than that meal. It was the first time for my parents to meet her parents, and that was just so much fun for us.

And Hudson and Hayes got to play with Jack and Caroline. Hudson instantly fell in love with baby Caroline, and cried when she left. And the boys had a fun time together… and by the time we said goodnight, they were finally starting to share!

It was a really, really great trip. And the integration back into reality is not as much fun. But we’re gearing up for the start of preschool in a few weeks, and loving our transition back into a nice little family routine.

what we did on our summer vacation

Today is officially the last day of our summer vacation. Hudson starts preschool tomorrow and Hayes will be going, too, though his isn’t technically preschool.

I’m excited for Hudson because he loves school, but I’m especially excited for Hayes to have an opportunity to be around other kids a couple days a week and have an opportunity to be away from his brother.

We’ve had a really great summer. At times it was busy and full of activity and at times we took it really easy and just hung out at home. I’m thankful for the summer I had with my boys, and I wanted to be able to look back and see all that we did in a nutshell.

We went fishing on our friends’ farm and got to hang out with horses.

We went to Greenville to celebrate the Smith family and Mary Brooks’s miraculous little life, and saw lots of sweet friends when we were there.

I taught 3 year olds at VBS with Anna and we had a great time hanging out with Gracie and Mary Elizabeth all summer.

Hudson had a great time at swim lessons.

Uncle Walker came to visit for a week.

We visited the Charleston Aquarium with RC and PC.

We celebrated Hudson’s 3rd birthday at the beach!

We spent a week at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina with RC, PC, KK and Poppie.

We said “goodbye” to Hayes’s doc band and the wonderful therapists who helped him.

We potty-trained Hudson!

We spent two weeks in Indiana with KK and Poppie at their house. We celebrated 4th of July there.

I went to Atlanta for Market with Nina and my mom, and got to have dinner with these lovely ladies.

We spent a week in Orange Beach, Alabama with KK, Poppie, and Uncle Walker

We had family photos taken by Sarah Lyn Photography while we were in Orange Beach

Todd and I went to the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island

And, of course, we had so many lazy days at home just hanging out and learning to share.

I hope you all had a great summer and are excited about the start of a new year!

Family Road Trip Tips

Family road trips can be a bit overwhelming. When kids are involved, you just never really know what to expect. Gone are the days of taking a quiet drive with your honey as you take turns listening to your favorite music, and stopping at fun local stores and restaurants just because you’ve got all the time in the world.

No, on family road trips, we’re pretty much at the mercy of our kiddos, their needs, and their schedule.

When Hudson was a baby and a young toddler, we used to fly everywhere. Hudson and I frequently flew to see my mom and dad in Dallas, and we had that whole process mastered.

But when Hayes came along, the idea of flying with two babies– alone– just seemed like too much. And too expensive. So we started driving. In Hayes’s short little life, we’ve been on at least five 12-hour road trips. And they’re not all that bad.

I wanted to share our tips with all of you that have young children.

Cue the Vacation “Holiday Road” theme music, Griswolds…

1.  Set up a special toy bag. If the oldest child can reach it, that’s ideal. But if the front seat passenger can reach it that’s good, too. Pack the toy bag with some fun new toys and old favorites. We like to bring sticker books, a Magnadoodle, the boys’ favorite animals, and favorite books. Little ones just need something to hold on to and chew on. Older ones need something very hands-on. We also pack puzzles for when we arrive at our destination.  We put all of the small toys and small pieces in Ziploc bags so everything stays together and nothing gets lost. I love the Thirty-One Large Utility Tote for holding our toys in the car.

2. Prepare your in-car entertainment. We have a portable DVD player that we have hooked up to the back of one of the front seats. We prefer to play longer Disney movies so we’re not constantly trying to switch out the DVD. And my boys love all the music in the Disney movies. We also bring the iPad, and have some kid-friendly apps downloaded and have also downloaded some of their favorite movies and TV shows. We also listen to some of our family’s favorite songs. Our boys both love music, so we like to keep music on hand that keeps them happy.

3. Set up a little diaper station. We bring our regular diaper bag on the trip, but for the actual road trip, we set up a station in the back of our SUV. You could also do this in the front seat of the car when you stop. Sometimes there is a dirty diaper and there’s not a clean restroom for diaper changing. I actually love the Thirty-One Organizing Utility Tote for this purpose. We pack it full of diapers, a pair of clean underwear, and a change of clothes for each boy. And it holds a big container of wipes. The portable changing pad fits in the bag, too, so we can just change a quick diaper in the car. We also bring the small portable potty for this reason. You just never know when someone needs to go.

4. Bring the comforts of home. Hudson is attached to his lovie and Hayes sleeps with a lovie and a certain pacifier. This are my boys’ “sleep triggers” and instantly make them feel comfortable. They go to sleep so quickly when they have these little comforts. I also bring a little blanket for each of them, so they don’t get too cold when they nap. And we bring Hudson’s pillow for when we arrive at our destination. Fortunately, their carseats have large side impact protection padding that gives them a nice little pillow.

5. Don’t forget the snacks. We pack a bag full of snacks. We bring “clean” snacks like crackers, oatmeal bars, cookies, graham crackers, and Goldfish. Just things that they can eat without making a huge mess. And for road trips, I’m not overly concerned with packing healthy snacks. I just want to keep them happy, and quiet. I also pack a few very large bottles of water so we can refill sippy cups as often as needed.

6. Food stops and sanity stops. Stop as often as your kids need. We always build in time for extra long stops. We know we’ll need more potty breaks than usual, and we know that when they need lunch, they really need lunch. We try to stop at a fast food restaurant with a playground so the boys can run around and burn off some energy. If we have to spend an hour for lunch just so they can get their wiggles out, that’s okay. Another one of our favorite places to stop is Cracker Barrel. We can always count on a decent meal for our kids and we can count on clean bathrooms.

7. Time your trip around your kids’ schedule. We always try to leave immediately after breakfast. This way they are full from breakfast and they’ve been awake at least an hour. We know that we can get at least three hours in on the road before we have to stop for lunch. And then we know that after lunch they’ll be fed, full, and tired. Then we can count on a good, long afternoon nap. But if it’s clear that our kids are just over the trip and aren’t going to tolerate it another second, we try to be flexible. If we need to stop for the night and finish the trip the next day, we’re prepared to do that. Which leads me to my final tip…

8. Pack strategically. If  you are planning to stop halfway, pack one overnight bag that has a change of clothes and pajamas for all of you. It will need all the toiletries and whatever you need for one quick stay at a hotel on the way to your final destination. We pulled up very late one night to a hotel about halfway to the beach. I unloaded the boys and Todd grabbed the one bag we needed. Make sure your overnight bag is easy to access from the rear of the vehicle.

What tips would you add to this list?

*Thirty-One Gifts did not sponsor this post, I just absolutely love their bags and never go on a trip without these bags. I have many friends that sell Thirty-One and I have ordered quite a few bags over the last two years. They really are the best.

Road trips aren’t bad at all if you’re a preschooler who hollers out that you need to go potty. And if your brother is snoozing next to you in his car seat, your daddy will take you into Burger King to get a milkshake and a crown.
