newborn favorites

So with our third baby, I feel like I know a thing or two about what I really need to get through the day. And, shocker! It’s not that much.

My little munchkin loves to be held and loves to be swaddled. We have a good bit of baby gear that we’re not even really using right now because he just doesn’t love it or he’s not old enough for it. Things change month-to-month (or day-to-day really) with a baby, so the things we’re loving will change, too. I thought I’d do a post every couple of months with the favorites and then see how things have changed.

We have a Mamaroo for the first time that my mom gave us. I love that it doesn’t take up much space and kind of blends in with the wall, but unless James Walker is practically asleep, he doesn’t love it. I’m thinking this will change over time. Or at least I hope it does!

We also have a fun play gym/activity mat that sits in our family room floor, but he tends to cry within five minutes of being on that thing. I’m also hopeful that this changes over the next month. He does love tummy time and that’s a good place to do tummy time.

But as for the favorites? Here they are!

Kissy Kissy Convertible Gown

I love gowns in general for newborns. I especially love them at night. And I tend to keep my babies in gowns at night for six months just to help with the ease of diaper changing. These convertible gowns by Kissy Kissy don’t have to go over their heads. It’s easy to get their arms through the arm hole, and they can snap up like a gown or switch to a playsuit with legs. It’s basically like two outfits in one.

Ergo

Three cheers for baby wearing! I probably use the Ergo four or five times a week. I have worn him in the movies. I wear him while I cook supper. I wear him to take walks with the big boys and I wear him to the big boys’ soccer and baseball games. And I know this awesome product isn’t just for teeny babies and I’ll get much more use out of it over the next year.

Puj Bathtub

This is one of our new purchases for James Walker and it was a good one. This super simple design for a baby bathtub is easy to store. It’s small. It fits right in the bathroom sink so you don’t have to bend over or handle a slippery newborn. I just love it. It may be my favorite thing of all the favorite things. And James Walker loves his bath. He sits totally content in this thing for 20 minutes while warm water runs over his belly.

Snugabunny Bouncer

This is an oldie but goodie. It was a favorite with the other babies, too. And James Walker loves it just as much. It has the perfect shape for hugging and cradling a tiny baby. It vibrates. It bounces. It’s soft. It comes in most handy when I take it into the bathroom while I shower and dry my hair. James Walker starts off awake and soon dozes off while I get ready. Love this thing!

Wubbanub Pacifier

Oh, the hugeness of the Wubbanub. I used to think these things were so silly looking before I had babies, but I love that it helps a newborn keep the pacifier in his mouth. Big fan of the Wubbanub. And it’s nearly impossible to lose it like we do with other pacifiers.

Swaddle Designs Blanket

This has been my favorite thing since Hudson was born. There is no better blanket for doing a good, tight swaddle. (Follow Dr. Harvey Karp’s Happiest Baby on the Block swaddle method for a good swaddle technique.) My babies love being swaddled and I love that this blanket keeps them warm, keeps the swaddle in place, and it’s a nice tight swaddle. James Walker will soon be too big for these blankets and we’ll either drop the swaddle or move to the Woombie or Swaddle Me, but this is what I love for newborns!

So, those are my favorites. And this is just about all we ever use on a day-to-day basis. Would you add anything to the list?

My son was addicted to the swaddle! We had the mostsuccess with muslin blankets (Aden & Anais were the BEST and worth every penny) and Google the double swaddle–no baby is getting out of that! Smith was a NICU baby and the nurses showed me.

I’ve been debating on purchasing a Puj tub this time around, so it is nice to hear that it works so well for you. I’m also a huge fan of the Kissy Kissy convertible gowns. I had one for Jack and I have purchased a couple of more for Paxton. I love that it doesn’t have to go over their heads.

We loved our Ergo, too! I stopped wearing Gabriel and Claire much younger than I am with Charlotte, mostly out of necessity. We switched to a Tula and a Kinderpack because the back panel on the Ergo didn’t come high enough anymore. It’s also more comfortable on my back. If you wind up wearing JW to the point where you feel it isn’t high enough, it’d be worth looking into them (cute prints are a bonus!)

Neither of my kids have been big paci people. DH would not take one at all, and Deeds would occasionally. Those wubbanubs looks absolutely ridiculous but man, do they seem to work!

A sweet friend gave us a mamaroo as a baby gift too & my little one never loved it either. I gave a friend a rockaroo – I think we might have liked it better, but who knows!

Love this post! It’s so fun to see which tried and true items make the list even after the 3rd sweet babe arrived. Even though Wilder’s almost 2, I love wearing him on my back (aka preventing him from running) in the Ergo during those errand trips to stores that don’t have shopping carts. And sometimes he still likes a good 28 lb chest carry when he’s really under the weather and needs a snuggle when I’m trying to be productive around the house 😉 Love you and those sweet babies!

I am so glad y’all are loving the Ergo! I still say it’s my #1 baby item I couldn’t live without (you know…not including the car seat and crib!). And although we don’t use it a lot, we still use it for back carrying now at 2.5. We went to NYC in Feb, J used it to carry M around!

Also, I never would have expected to love those flannel newborn swaddles as much as I did, but the one you gave us for M was SO good at keeping her swaddled! Definitely a keeper!

I am on the same page with you on a lot of these.

Conner lives in the Kissy Kissy convertible gowns. They make diaper changes a BREEZE!!! LOOOOOOOOVE these!

As for the carrier, I bought the Boba 4G, but Conner didn’t seem to like it at all. Maybe I’ll try this one…because I really like the concept of being able to have him close to me, while allowing me to actually DO stuff like cook dinner and work some. Some days I get NOTHING done because I have to hold him all day (he’s colicky, has acid reflux, and a milk protein allergy – so he’s not an “easy” baby. . .), and it’s so frustrating!

We have the Puj tub, but I think we’ll like it better when he’s a little older. It takes my husband and I both to wash him in this thing – my husband holds Conner while I bathe him.

We have a similar rocking / vibrating thing. That’s what Conner sleeps in now since he refuses to sleep in the Halo Bassinest (and we even bought the pricier version!)…we haven’t even TRIED him in his crib. He has reflux, so the Fisher Price Rock and Play Sleeper is perfect since it’s reclined like yours. That thing has been a LIFESAVER for us since previously, Conner slept between me and David in bed on his Newborn Boppy Lounger (EEEEK – I know…not ideal….but it was survival mode, and that was the only way he’d sleep).

Conner is a Houdini, and can unravel himself from even the best blanket swaddles, so we’ve used the Summer Infant SwaddleMe Stage 2’s since we brought him home from the hospital. We have so many of these things – we use them every time we put him down for naps or for the night.

Wubbanub – yes – it’s a classic. Although Conner still manages to spit it out / lose it. Le sigh.

We, too, have the Mamaroo. Hoping that he learns to love it as he gets older, too! The longest he stayed in it was when we brought him home from the hospital. Ever since then – 10 – 15 minutes tops before he starts screaming. Grrrrr.

    Great minds think alike!
