Our Home: The Kitchen

WHITE KITCHEN Home Tour on Blue-Eyed Bride.jpg

Welcome to our kitchen! I decided to continue with our home tour with the busiest room in our house.

IMG_0554

We had so much fun planning our kitchen. I wanted openness and I wanted really functional storage. The biggest way we achieved more storage in an average size kitchen was to use more deep drawers instead of cabinets. We only have lower cabinets underneath the rangetop. Everything else is deep drawers. We keep our pots and pans, lids, baking dishes, sippy cups, and really every single thing in the drawers. We did one cabinet for huge items like our roasting pan, cake plates and one huge boiler I have.

IMG_0556 The kitchen is open to the family room, and I know this isn’t for everyone, but it has been so great for us. In the last house, the galley kitchen was really far from the family room, but people still wanted to gather in the kitchen. There just wasn’t anywhere for them to sit. I love that in this house, everyone can be together and still have plenty of room to spread out or watch the game.

IMG_0565

Cooking dinner at night has gotten so much easier just because the kids aren’t constantly calling for me, and I can see them.

IMG_0564 IMG_0558 IMG_0557

We decided on a microwave drawer and have really loved it so far! I love that if something is heavy or hot, I’m not trying to pull it down from above.

IMG_0572 IMG_0569

Thanks to Pinterest, choosing our kitchen finishes was a lot easier than I thought it would be. There are so many beautiful kitchens out there. Antiqued cabinets. All gray cabinets. Dark cabinets. White cabinets. How could I possibly choose? It’s all so beautiful! But when I looked at my kitchen board on Pinterest, it was obvious was my style was. Every kitchen I had pinned was white cabinets, white subway tile, and a light counter top.

IMG_0568

Despite second-guessing myself and its practicality for a few months, we finally decided to go with carerra marble counter tops. I had heard that it was impractical and that they stain and scratch. But I didn’t care about the risks. I knew that I’d probably never get the chance again to choose my counter top, and marble was what I really wanted. And it was surprisingly affordable! And I have not regretted that decision once. We absolutely love our counter tops and haven’t tip-toed around them at all!

IMG_0566 IMG_0580 IMG_0575

Our mudroom, desk area, and laundry room are right by the back door on the way to the kitchen. That has helped us tremendously when trying to cut down on kitchen clutter. We still have clutter, but it stays off the kitchen counter top.

I’ve included a source list at the bottom of this post, and I’m happy to answer any questions y’all may have. Wish you could all come over for coffee today!

I love, love, love, love it! It’s open, it’s light, it’s airy and bright…I love it! I’m so excited for you to reveal the other rooms too but seriously…this one is going to be hard to top!

I’m totally with you on white cabinets, subway tile, and light counters. We ran out of time and money to finish our subway tile backsplash before we moved in and I had my son (18 months ago), but I’m anxious to finish it up!! It looks great!

    • says

Thank you, Sarah! We found all of our subway tile at a clearance sale at a tile shop. We were shocked that we found it for such a steal and we ended up with tile leftover. We got a pretty good bargain with the guy who installed the backsplash and with the low cost of the actual tiles, we were just so glad to get it done without breaking the bank!

LOVE everything about this room. Absolutely gorgeous! The white cabinets and light countertops give off such a feeling of happiness. The unique lighting, small details, and special pieces inherited from your mom make it all yours! I can’t wait to sit at that table for a cup of coffee with you one day soon! xoxo

  5. Meghan says

So beautiful! I just love the white cabinets and all of the details. You have such a welcoming home!

Thank you, Katie! The drawers were something we always said we wanted after living somewhere that didn’t have any big drawers. We’ve been so happy with that decision.

  6. Keisha Dawson says

Thanks so much for sharing the beautiful details of your new home with your readers! Lots of inspiration!

Erin it is absolutely gorgeous! The kitchen is always my favorite room in any house and your’s is magazine beautiful and functional at the same time. Greta color choices! I love all white kitchens too and I love how you added color with the blue island. And all the family photos!! Great way to bring life into a white / tan / light space! Thanks for sharing this with us! Pinning it as my dream kitchen.

The kitchen in our house we’re trying to sell has white cabinets but dark paint and a dark countertop. I’m thinking of lightening up my next go ’round {sell, house, sell!}. Love this! It’s beautiful!

  9. delaine says

So beautiful! We are looking to build and I’ve been looking at similar kitchen plans. Do you feel like you have sufficient counter space or do you ever wish you had more?

    • says

Hey Delaine, that is very exciting! When we designed our plans, we knew it wouldn’t be possible to do a sink overlooking a window, just because of the way the lot is positioned and because we wanted a screened in porch. But I’ve loved having the sink in the island. We made the island bigger to give us more counter space while still having the sink there. We feel like we have plenty of counter space. This kitchen is very efficient. Everything is always within reach or just a couple of steps away. I know if I had more counter space, I’d just end up covering it with more stuff. Ha! I usually do my prep work to the left of the range top or standing in front of the trash cabinet next to the sink. When we prepared Christmas dinner, we always had 3 or 4 people in the kitchen working and we all had enough space. I’m sure we could all wish for a bigger kitchen with more space, but we have really loved the functionality and efficiency of this space. 🙂 good luck with your building process!!

A picture perfect kitchen! I especially love the farmhouse sink, hand-me-down stools and the white cabinetry. The cohesion of everything is seamless! I hope our kitchen looks just as southern and happy as yours when we are finished building 🙂

  12. says

I LOVE a white kitchen. I spend so much time in my kitchen – I don’t think I could go with dark cabinets, so I’m loving your choices!!

Your kitchen looks like it’s straight out of a magazine. So beautiful!

  13. Melissa says

I LOVE it! It’s so beautiful. The colors are very similar to our kitchen, and they are very calming, which is good when a kitchen can be chaotic! Thank you for sharing! 🙂

  14. Cami says

Would you mind sharing the source of your sink faucet?! Love it, classic and beautiful. 🙂
    Thanks!

    • says

      Hey Cami,

The faucet is a Brizo by Delta with the sprayer and soap dispenser as an add-on. I’m sorry I didn’t list that with the sources. Going to update now! 🙂

  15. Cami says

Love your faucet, would you mind sharing the source?
    {sorry if this double posts, wasn’t showing up for some reason!}

    Hi Erin,
I am interested in carrara white marble for a future home. I read that it stains easily if you don’t wipe up a spill right away. Have you had any problems? Also, did you purchase through your builder or did they have to order online? Im curious if it is hard to find? Also, do you mind sharing the price per sq foot? Thanks!

    • says

      Hey Lia,

I don’t know the price per square foot but we purchased through Coastal Stone Works via our builder. We went out to select the slab but our builder paid the sub-contractor 🙂 we have only had trouble with one water spot. We don’t have many spills, but the guy that did our counter tops did a nice seal on them and we just haven’t had many problems. They’re not “perfect” but I think it just comes down to deciding whether or not you want to live with that. We like the idea of added character just because we love the look of the marble. 🙂 good luck with your decision!!

  17. says

Gorgeous!! I absolutely love it! And I also LOVE the idea of having a mudroom/laundry room/etc right near the kitchen. What a great way to keep the kitchen clutter to a minimum!

  18. says

One of my favorite kitchens ever. :). It has the best light and I especially love the grey on the island. And now I’m just remembering I was going to drop something by your house this morning after Bible Study. Oh well! Just an excuse to come by another day!

  19. Debby says

Beautiful Kitchen. My sister did the drawers on all the bottom cabinets in her house too and I love the idea. If we built again, I would definitely do it. What are your appliances? We are thinking of replacing the stovetop and love the look of yours.

  20. says

it’s absolute perfection my friend…a job well done, and i’d be glad to come over for coffee anytime 🙂
the color inspired me to paint the same in our guest bedroom and it’s so refreshing and serene. the island lights are absolutely the best i’ve seen!! can’t wait to see more soon

  21. says

I seriously loved watching your kitchen come together as we got started on ours. I did the exact same thing with my Pinterest board. Had no idea how much of non-color person I was until I saw it laid in front of me….white, white and more white! Your home is fabulous, Erin!!

  22. says

I’ve been drooling over your kitchen since you your very first Instagram sneak peeks! Love everything about it and it looks so calm, comfortable and magazine-worthy for sure! I’m looking for new kitchen stools and found some like those online – would you buy them if they weren’t given to you? How well do the boys like them? We pretty much each dinner every night at our bar so they get a lot of use, but I’m going back and forth between something like this and ones with backs. Loving the tour! Wish I could come have coffee for sure!

    • says

Hey friend! Thank you so much. When can you come down and visit? 🙂

I love these stools. I had planned to shop for some, but then I had been given these a few years ago and pulled them out of storage and they were perfect. I love the texture and the boys LOVE sitting on them. They’ve learned how to climb up and how to get down. I really like that they totally fit under the counter. It helps with the view from the kitchen to the family room and doesn’t block the view. And then they’re completely out of the way when we’re not using them. I love them!

  23. says

Oh my goodness, Erin! Love this so much! It is clear that so much thought went into every beautiful detail. I, too, love the white cabinets and lighter countertops with the contrast of the gray island. I am so happy for you and your family that you have this amazing space finally!

  24. says

Erin! The kitchen is lovely!! I love all of the colors and details, they come together so beautifully. You have excellent taste, and I love how your mix of furniture passed through the generations comes together with the new. Marble is risky, but if you love it, then you have to go for it!! I tell clients all the time that I live in a building from the 1920s with a marble staircase that is stunning to this day.
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful hub of your home!

  25. says

Absolutely beautiful!!! The thing I love about what you’ve showed us of your home is how collected everything is. Everything seems to have meaning. And I don’t ever get the feeling you just go buy stuff to buy it. I love that!!!

  26. Katie says

Absolutely love your kitchen! It is beautiful! I’m working on a kitchen renovation myself and I’m curious about the dimensions of your island. I want a large island for friends and family to comfortably gather around and yours looks like a great size. Thank you for sharing all your information!

Beautiful kitchen! I love white kitchens with wood floors and the pop of color on the island is just perfect. Could you share more info about the flooring? What is the material and what color? Looks great with your cabinets and counters! I’m really enjoying your home tour – can’t wait to see what’s next!

This looks so beautiful and inviting! You did an amazing job! I’ve always been a fan of drawers in the kitchen as well (not that we have them). Love the idea for the microwave too!

Stunning, gorgeous!! I was born in Columbia, but now reside in Northern VA…my father was finishing his doctorate when I was born. Love love love Southern style!

  31. Clara says

Oops! I left my comment on the wrong post. Everything is so pretty! Could you tell us more about the family pictures lined up near the kitchen table? What size are the prints and where did you get the frames? Thank you!

Erin-your kitchen is beyond fabulous!! I’m a follower of yours on Instagram and am always admiring it, so I got super excited when you posted a home tour + sources of it!! We are currently renovating ours at a new home and I love your cup pulls. Would you minding sharing where you found yours?? Just went granite shopping yesterday and saw that color and it’s exactly what I want, but am slightly scared to do marble with 2 small children! Did you ever find a color similar in granite?
    Thanks!!!!

  33. Robin says

What color did you use on the island, you have the island listed on the sources, but it’s the only one with no color 😉

  34. says

What a beautiful kitchen! The kitchen is such an important space in a home — it’s where memories are made, recipes are tested on hungry bellies and meals are shared. We just love it! xoxo

  35. elizabeth says

I’m looking at painting our cabinets Sea Salt!! I love that you did 50% – that might be just what we need! I love the color of your island. Do you know the name? I saw it was left blank in the resources. Thanks! 🙂

  36. elizabeth says

We are getting ready to paint our cabinets and I think Sea Salt at 50% might be perfect for us! And I love your dark island. Do you know the paint color? I saw it was left blank above. Thanks!! 🙂

  37. Alicia says

We will have a very similar set up, but a doorway where your pantry is. I am so glad to see the fridge and micro over on that smaller section. In our plan, the fridge is on the main wall with the range, but I am not sure I love it. Can you tell me if the fridge placement has been at all problematic for you?

You have a BEAUTIFUL home and wonderful taste. I can only hope my home turns out as welcoming!

    Thanks!

  38. Amanda says

I love your kitchen! We are currently building and I’m planning something similar. Do you mind sharing what brand/style your cabinets are?

    Thanks!

Hi Erin! I have been saving these posts and now that we are in a remodel I am study thing them! It is gorgeous! I am wishing I had asked you more about the marble because it was so hard to find a marble substitute for counters ( and more expensive) we were warned off it too because of staining. LOVE those island light fixtures so that is what my question is about. I can’t tell from the pics what your ceiling height is? Ours is only 8′ so I am wondering if a similar fixture will feel too big/low for our space. Do you have idea ( or guess) at the size of those globes? Hope all is well with you guys. Love all the pics of your newest little buddy!

Hi Erin! I love your home! We are building a house now, and many of the design choices you made reflect the feeling I want in our home. Is the color in the kitchen the same as your playroom, Sherwin Williams Sea Salt at 50%? It looks so different.
