Hudson's tonsillectomy

Hudson had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy yesterday. Yesterday morning, we woke Hudson up at 7:00 and put his shoes on, gave him his lovie, and got in the car. We told him we had to go to see the doctor so she could look at his nose and throat. We told him it would hurt a little, but that we would be there to help him with the pain.

We hadn’t told him in advance because I didn’t want him to be too anxious about it and constantly thinking about it. Todd and Hayes stayed behind so Todd could take Hayes to school. (We didn’t want Hayes running around the surgery center.) So Hudson and I talked on the way to the surgery center about what would happen and I told him that I had gone through it when I was 18 years old. (Not recommended to wait that long!)

He was so sweet in pre-op. I helped him put on his little gown. When he had his tubes at 21 months, he wore this same Looney Tunes gown and it practically covered his whole body. This time he had to keep his pajama pants on to cover his bottom half. I can’t believe how big he is!

We read books and colored while we waited for the ENT and the anesthesiologist. He told me that when he’s scared, he knows that God is always with him and Jesus is in his heart so he can be brave. And then I cried.

The nurses were so sweet to him, and when it was time for him to go back, he willingly took their hands and walked back. And, goodness gracious. There is nothing at gut wrenching as watching your child walk away toward an unknown situation holding a stranger’s hand.

I teared up a little, texted Todd and our families and a few friends, and then waited. About 30 minutes later, the doctor came to talk to me. She said that Hudson had done great. His tonsils were really big and causing some sleep issues. Hudson sleeps 12 hours every night and never gets up, but he snored like a freight train and I would often hear him holding his breath. Then the doctor told me that his adenoids were even bigger than his tonsils. It’s remarkable that he’s such a content kid, because he’s been living with this for so long. I’m glad we went forward with the surgery.

She said that he had been really brave and asked for his mommy when he woke up.

They kept him in recovery for about 20 minutes before I could see him, and just before I went back, Todd got there to be with us after dropping off Hayes at preschool. When we got back to see Hudson, he had just gotten sick (something he gets from his mommy) but he was so happy to see us. He never cried and just stayed so strong. He ate a popsicle and drank some Gatorade.

I got him home and set him up with a little bed on the couch. He dozed on and off all day and was content to watch movies, eat applesauce and sleep. He hasn’t complained about the pain and we’re trying to stay ahead of it with his meds.

I’m praying that as the days go on that he stays comfortable. My mom is coming today to visit for spring break and Easter and Hudson and Hayes are so excited to see their KK.

Thank you for all of your kind words on Instagram. He’s been such a sweet little patient.

Sweet, sweet boy! Hoping he feels better soon! I teared up a bit reading this too – especially when you described him walking away for the procedures. Goodness, how heart-wrenching. But so glad it went well, and so glad you went forward with it so that Hudson can be more comfortable from now on!:)

Praying for a quick recovery for him! We may be going down this road with our oldest in the future. I know what you mean about them taking them to surgery – K.C. had to have a minor procedure a few years ago and it was gut wrenching to watch him being wheeled away in that little gown on the giant stretcher holding his George.

So glad it went well, he looks adorable in that photo – so grown up! My little guy had his aednoid out a little over a year ago, and it was LIFE CHANGING. You will be SO glad you did it. Has anyone warned you about how stinky their breath gets after this surgery though? It has something to do with the scabbing in their throat and is almost unbearable. Just prepare yourself. Haha! Good thing they are so cute!

Such a happy kiddo! I remember having a root beer Popsicle at my tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy and my daddy carrying me to the car (even though I had the option for the wheelchair!)

Aww, it looks like Hudson was such a trooper! Just a word of precaution- when they say to take it easy and limit him to soft cold foods, they really mean it. My hyperactive niece had the same surgery, and she broke the rules and started running around too soon and eating abrasive foods sooner than she was supposed to. That earned her a couple trips to the ER for coughing up large amounts of blood. Even though it is hard to keep a young active child calm and happy with soft foods, doing so is VERY preferable to terrifying ER trips with a child who can’t stop coughing up blood.

Also, watch to see if you notice any behavior changes in Hudson after this surgery. My other niece had the same surgery too, because it was causing her some sleep problems. My aunt and uncle are GREAT parents and had raised her two older brothers to be so sweet and respectful and responsible, and this niece, their youngest, was just an absolute spitfire. Then she had the surgery, and since she no longer had sleep apnea from her tonsils, she was getting a good full night’s sleep each night, and everyone noticed a HUGE difference in her behavior. She suddenly started keeping her room clean, and had the attention span to finish her homework without a fight each night. She also stopped having meltdowns for the most part. My aunt said it was like she got a different kid back after the surgery- one with all of the good and sweetness still in her, and a lot less of the frustrating stuff they had battled incessantly about over the years.

Such a timely post! My 2 year-old is going in on Monday morning for the same surgery. Since he is only 2, we will have to stay in the hospital overnight. Can you keep updating on his recovery? I was told he should be back to normal in about a week…

So glad he is doing well and surgery went great! Hopefully he heals up as easily has he dealt with it, funny how strong the little ones can be when the adults always freak out. When my nephew had a heart scare in the winter he did great, had it happened to me I would have been a nervous wreck!

Awe – little sweetheart. Your loving family will be his best medicine. My heart aches when little ones have to go through stressful situations. I hope he is doing good today and all better very soon! Your children are adorable!

Amelia snores and I’m afraid she’ll have to have this same surgery, but like you said, better now than later. I was 29 years old and OH MY WORD. The pain. Kids bounce back so quickly. I’m happy to hear your sweet boy is doing well. Praying he has a quick recovery. And I remember handing both of my girls over to the nurses for tubes – neither of them cried but I did. ha!

    Have a great weekend!

Happy yall are on the other side of this for sure!! Anne Margaret had the surgery back in early December and it was a huge blessing. This is random, but do you know what it is that make yall sick? My grandmother and I both got sick and she finally realized it was the narcotic they paired with it. Every time I have had anesthesia, they have given a narcotic with it (for pain or whatever reason) and it is that which makes me sick…last time, I think I had demarol (sp??) Anyway, when I had my most recent epidural and when I had my endoscopy, I asked them to hold the narcotic and I didnt get sick!! I dont know if this even makes sense because I dont understand medical stuff at all, but may be worth considering!!
