mommy's power hour

mommy's power hour

We’re in the phase where a certain four-year-old is knocking on our door every morning at 6:00 a.m. This is the earliest he has ever woken up.

And Todd and I are night owls. I hit my second wind at 10:00 p.m. I blog, I watch TV. I stay up way too late for his 6:00 a.m. wake up call.

So Hudson gets our day going. Todd and I sludge around and doze with Hudson in the bed until about 7:00 a.m. And then we start running and racing.

Dressing kids, getting ourselves dressed. Letting the dogs out and feeding the dogs and getting breakfast for the kids. I may guzzle a cup of coffee and wish I had more time to really enjoy it before we jump in the car and head off to school.

I spend my morning while they’re at school running errands, going to the gym, doing housework. Trying to wake up, basically.

But after school, and after lunch. My “mommy power hour” begins.

I get the boys down for naps, let the dogs out, get dinner prepped, and then it’s my time.

Because our mornings start out with us all running wild, I take time during nap time for coffee and quiet.

I turn on my favorite praise music and spread out. The TV is off. The toys are out of sight. I can hear my thoughts.

I sip my coffee slowly out of my gorgeous, enormous latte mug, and I soak up the Word. I work on my daily to-do list, and I have a couple of hours to do it.

It’s my favorite time of day, and if I’m feeling extra productive, I may even go back for a second cup.

I just need a little bit of quiet, a breakfast blend K-Cup, and the Word.

And I need my new latte mug and spoon combo from Jessica N Designs and NS Pottery. I chose the Cup of Love Latte Mug. This gorgeous mug is huge and feels so good in my hand.

And I chose the “Little Bit of Coffee & A Whole Lotta Jesus” spoon. This sweet little spoon and its happy message just cheers me right up!

These two fabulous ladies will be at the Influence Conference at the Sashes Market later this month, and I cannot wait to meet them! And hug them!

I’ll be at the Influence Conference speaking on the Accessible Experts Panel…. hello, nerves!

Seriously… these mugs and spoons will be given to everyone I know for Christmas this year. These girls are geniuses!

Okay, so are you like me, and get your routine going in the middle of the day because you’re a night owl like me? Or are you a morning person? What’s your routine like?

Oh my word, I’m totally a night owl…I get most of my work done after the kiddos are in bed, and then I need to wind down and chat with Jim. And that’s not counting nights of Junior League meetings, etc. Every week I pledge to go to bed earlier (because it would make my morning workouts so much easier, I know!!) but then 11:30 pm rolls around and I still have one.more.thing to do! An afternoon cup of coffee is absolutely essential and I’m loving that sweet spoon!! What a great gift idea.

Oh Heidi! The nights with meetings are the worst because I come in from a meeting at 9:00 and still want three hours to do my normal nightly stuff. So I’m up extra late. I know you and Beverly are SO busy!

I am right there with ya! I am also a night owl and love to tidy up, catch up on shows, and blog the night away. I am a teensy bit jealous of your afternoon “me time” 🙂 Right now, I use that time to respond to work emails and such – but I hope to rework that schedule in a few years time. And I love your mug & spoon – I’ll be checking out their sites today!

Sometimes it is spent answering blog emails, but you’re right. I do feel so fortunate to have this special time right now. You definitely need to check out the mug and spoon sets. They’re so adorable!

You look so warm in cozy-like something from a magazine spread! I’m so with you. I started doing my mommy power hour a few weeks ago and it’s been awesome. I get up extra early (6:00am) just to have an hour for myself before my boys get up and I have to prep them for school.

You are so sweet. Thank you! The power hour is essential! When our nap time days are over, I’ll have to come up with a new plan! Probably waking up before my kids and having my hour then. Ack!

  4. says

My power hour is right after I get home from work (around 6:00). My husband usually is at the gym until 7:00, so during that hour I feed the dog, start a load of laundry, make dinner, empty the dishwasher (if needed) while dinner cooks, sort through mail, all while keeping our son entertained! Sometimes he watches a little tv, but other times he wants to help me in the kitchen or play with his toys. If I come home at night and don’t have all those things to do–like if my hubs is home and cooks or if we eat out–I feel so out of place! 🙂 It’s funny how we moms thrive with the multi-tasking, isn’t it??

I’m naturally a night owl but with a kindergartner I’m finding our day has to start at 5:45-6:00 a.m. Still I found myself working out at 9:30 last night. If it were up to me mornings would be a bit slower and wake up times a bit later.

  6. says

I am a night owl too. And sometimes I feel bad because I don’t take quiet time in the mornings, but honestly they’re just not my best time of day. I like your idea of the mid-day power hour. And I definitely want that spoon!

  7. says

First of all, these photos of you are so great! You look so cozy and happy. 🙂 I love the idea of your power hour and feel it is critical. I’m more of a morning person, so I have been trying to wake up 30 minutes early before I would typically start my day to take time for prayer and Scripture reading. It makes a huge difference! Thanks so much for sharing with us!!

I’m totally a night owl, so my power hour is probably during nap time too. I’m lucky if I can drag myself out of bed 30 mins. before the kids so I can at least be showered before they wake. I’m so lucky that they usually sleep until 7:30am – I hope they do that for a long long time! I try to do my devotion/Bible reading right after I put the kids down around 1pm and then spend time doing some planning for the second half of my day or simple mindless chores. The latte mug is so cute! I think I’d be more likely to take some time for myself if I had one of those! Sometimes I feel guilty that I’m not more of a morning person, but I get it honestly from my mother. She’s the same way!

  9. says

I have the same afternoon power hour too! I think it’s so important to regroup and recharge. I love this post! You’re a coffee drinking girl after my own heart. XOXO

  10. says

Definitely a night owl but love when I can drag myself out of bed before the girls wake up. I’m more productive, creatively at night and more productive domestically in the mornings.

This is so funny since I am literally doing that right now! I am not a mom, but a babysitter and their naptime is my “me” time to catch up on blogging and such! Loved this!

Thank you for this post. It is such an encouragement to know I’m not the only one who can’t peel myself out of bed in the morning. My toddler has started to wake up around 6am the past few weeks as well, which is not normal, and I’m adjusting. I had twins in March so with three kids under two, “me time” is difficult to come by these days, but I too take advantage of those moments in the afternoon when they are all napping. God uses those quiet moments in my living room to fill me up and remind me that all the craziness is a blessing! Thank you for being such an encouragement to me!

    • says

Bless you! Twins and a toddler. The “me time” will be so much sweeter when you finally get back to your sweet spot. Those quiet moments are such a treasure. Thanks for your encouraging comment!

I just adore everything about this! And are those marshmallows? Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup and I’m there!
Seriously, I am such a night owl and did a whole post on this.. It’s going to be my downfall when the kids start getting up earlier. I always have a list of things to do for nap time and never get to them. The pastor said in church this Sunday that if the average person wanted a day long enough to do everything they desire studies say it would be 42 hours. Hand raised high head pastor!

    • says

They are marshmallows! I wanted everyone to get the hint of that cute little hidden red heart, so I added white marshmallow hearts 🙂 Chocolate syrup? Now you’re speaking my love language! 42 hours in a day sounds amazing!

I’m the one falling asleep on the couch at 9pm. I do so much better in the morning. Of course, with a 2 year old and a 6 week old, I’d be happy just drinking my coffee while it’s still hot! You look so relaxed and cozy- love the mug!

I became a nightowl once I had kids… it’s the only time I can find to get things done (like blogging). And we have early risers too… both of our boys are up most days at 6:15am. And I am the farthest thing from a morning person you will ever see. So grateful to have married my opposite in that department, as he’s much better at handling the boys so early in the morning that I think I ever will be.

Just a thought. One of my friends when her son was about Hudson’s age started waking up that early. They got a digital clock for his room and she made a sign with 4 5 and 6 with an X through it (he was sometimes getting up that early!) and then circled a 7. They taught him and he knew that he couldn’t leave his room until there was a “7 on the left.” Worked like a charm!

    • says

Yes! He knows his numbers well, so we told him starting about six months ago not to leave until he saw the 7 as the first number. But now that he knows he can only leave his room to go potty, he tells us he has to go potty after we put him to bed and early in the morning. Agh! That’s so tricky because I don’t want him to hold it if he really has to go, but I also want him to sleep until 7:00 again! 🙂 Thank you for the tip!! We’ll keep trying!

  17. Sara says

I am so jealous that 6am is early for you guys! My little guy (Hudson as well may I add) went through a phase of waking at 5am! OMG! So now that he is back to 6am we are happy. Now, 7am would be bliss!
    Gorgeous mug 🙂

  18. Sara says

I should just add, try the Groclock- it is AMAZING! Hudson knows he is not allowed to get out of bed til he can ‘see the sun’ (on the clock) which you can set for any time, 🙂

  19. says

Beautiful pics!! My power hour starts at 5am! I have one hour for my daily bible study, daily planning and organization, and jotting thoughts down for my blog. From there it’s getting ready for work, getting my boys up and ready for school, and everyone out the door on time – with lots of hugs and kisses along the way!
    Love reading your thoughts!
    xx Susan

Well you inspired me to make an afternoon cup of coffee 🙂 I need one of those huge mugs – I’m in love! My power hour has to be before my kids wake up since my oldest unfortunately gave up naps a while ago. I still have him do “quiet time” in his room so that I get a little bit of time in the afternoon to myself. But I thrive in the mornings anyway, so I do all my blogging, reading, starting the chores, etc. in the morning! I have to say that while I love having my kids at home, I sometimes dream of the day they’re in school from 8-3 🙂
Oh and these pics are so cute!

  21. says

You are adorable!!!! These are such cute pics! I need one of those mugs and spoons! So excited they will be at the conf! I better bring an extra bag because I’m sure I’ll see a bunch that I “need!” haha! So excited to hear you on the panel of experts! You’re going to do awesome! I need to incorporate a “mommy power hour” into my day. Maybe I would feel less stressed by 5pm? Teddy doesn’t nap anymore…ahhhh! But, maybe I can figure out a way for both of us to have a power hour! xoxo!

I love mama power hour! What a great post! My Ty is four and he is getting up between 5 and 6 and it makes for some grumpy mornings I’m afraid. I’m zombie mama that early. Really enjoy your blog!
