brainy brainy brain dump

1. I have to keep writing brain dump posts and random posts because I keep forgetting to take out my camera when we’re doing fun things. I know, I know, it means I’m having fun, too, and not focusing on taking pictures. But I want pictures! It makes for more interesting blogging, sure, but it also will be important to me and my kiddos someday. Gotta remember to take pictures of the fun!

2. And we are having so much fun! This summer is already flying by, and we’ve been filling our time with more fun that we have in the past. The boys’ ages are so great that I feel like we can just go, go, go, nap, and go, go, go some more! We’ve had lots of trips to the pool, the zoo, swim lessons, swim camp, romps in the backyard with the dogs and the slip ‘n slide. I really gotta remember to take pictures of the fun!

3. We got our preliminary kitchen cabinet drawings today and I’m starting to feel panicky. Once again, I gotta remember to take more pictures because I want to do an actual house update. But now that I’m looking at the kitchen cabinet drawings I’m trying to decide if we want more drawers or more cabinets. And do we want any glass doors or will that drive me crazy having to keep them tidy? I’ve been pretty low key and easy-going about house stuff so far, but these decisions just make me nervous.

4. I’m going to see Nina in just a couple of weeks! It will be so great to have a couple of days with my dear friend. And then we won’t go on vacation until August. We’re going back to Orange Beach, Alabama. Gulf Shores/Perdido Key/Orange Beach are just my favorite place because they bring back such great memories. And I’m excited about a late-summer vacation!

5. I was heading to choir rehearsal last night, and I left the house 45 minutes before I needed to be there. And then I spent the next 50 minutes sitting in stand-still traffic on the interstate. Good gravy, that’s so frustrating!

6. I do not like wearing makeup in the summer. I need to share my favorite summer makeup with y’all, but I really would just prefer not to wear it at all. (Here’s last year’s post on my favorites for summer.) And in a perfect world of perfect skin and long, dark eyelashes instead of my super blonde, almost invisible eyelashes, going makeup-free for three months would be fantastic. But, alas, I don’t live in that world and I really need makeup.

7. It’s hot, y’all. Somehow it jumped from a cool 85 degrees to 98 degrees in just a day. Hello, summer! So nice to see you so soon!

Up here in WI, it’s hard to even call it summer yet. I am so looking forward to the warmer temps and outside fun.

I’m not sure if you’ve checked it out, but the ‘Building a House’ forum on GardenWeb helped us with some of our house decisions. They have a separate kitchen forum, as well. I will say that the forum members tore our kitchen plans apart pretty badly. We made a couple of minor tweaks based upon feedback, but I really do love the way our kitchen turned out. Even if several said we’d hate it. Aye. In general, I totally vote for more drawers. They’re so much easier to keep organized and seem to fit much more than the rolling drawers on our cabinets.

We are down at Orange Beach right now! I live about 90 minutes away in Mobile, AL. So glad to hear that you like coming to our little slice of heaven :). I love your blog and enjoy reading it bc I have a 3 year old boy. I commented on your “boy fashion” post because I think we have identical styles for our little guys! 🙂 My blog is private but I follow you on Instagram: epassmore414

    Have a wonderful day!! 🙂

We love Mobile, Ellis! How fun. What a great place to live and raise a family. We grew up going to OB, Gulf Shores, or Perdido Key every summer, and I’m thrilled to take our boys there, too! Wish we could get our little guys together to play!

We’re at the tail end of our house building experience, and I’m so ready for it to be over. We’re doing a custom build which means that while we have a contractor to help us we’re pretty much on our own when it comes to picking stuff out. I didn’t want to spend the money to hire a designer so it’s been a lot of back and forth and trying to decide what goes well with what. Rest assured that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Mine gets brighter each day. 🙂 Can’t wait to see your house pics.

Hi! I don’t think I’ve ever commented before but I have been reading your blog for a few years and I love it. Just thought I’d give my two cents about the kitchen cabinet dilemma. My dad is a custom home builder (and this does not make me an expert by any means) but I have heard him say that cabinets with pullout drawers are the best as far as efficiency and organization goes. And I’d have to agree! Also, glass doors would be gorgeous!

I felt like I was walking in the desert this morning when I walked outside! I love the hot weather more when there’s a beach involved!

We have solid cabinets with the exception of one corner that is glass and I love it. It adds some “character” without causing too much extra work in the form of Windexing!

My mother in law has all drawers all different sizes on the bottom in her kitchen and i LOVE it! I’m like you with the glass front cabinets, I like the look of it but have wondered if it would bug me to have to constantly worry about it being kept up! Can’t wait to hear what you choose!!

I love hearing people talk about how much they love the perdido/orange beach area because I call perdido home and sometimes I need reminding of just how blessed I am to live here!!

And lastly, I’m horrible about remembering the camera since I had my 3rd little one so I feel ya!! I always feel like a frantic mess trying to get everyone out of the house and the camera always seems to be forgotten! Thank goodness for phone cameras but it just isn’t the same!! =)

The heat! Ugh! It just popped up out of nowhere and it’s not kidding around!

M and I want to come visit one day this summer and go to the zoo with y’all 🙂

I am really bad about taking pictures too. My iPhone is just so easy. Drawers are so much easier. I had a few glass front cabinets and loved them for storing platters and serving pieces. Gave the kitchen some extra color too! Are you having the built in dividers for your flatware in the drawers? Love those!!! You can never have too many cabinets.

I love having tons of drawers in my kitchen! When I designed my kitchen, I made a list of every big thing and made sure there was a space for it (garbage, recycling, dog food, pots & pans, cookie sheets, rubbermaids, etc). Then I drew in a few more big base cabinets for things like huge packs of paper towels, cases of soda, etc. once I knew that there was a place for all of my stuff, I worried less about whether the kitchen would be a good fit for me. After all, that is the fun of designing it from scratch is designing the kitchen to fit your family’s needs instead of making your family fit the existing kitchen’s needs. As far as glass cabinets, I wouldn’t do more than a couple for fancy dishes if you do them. Honestly sippy cups and Disney cups just don’t look that great in glass cabinets, and that is where your family is at right now. If you want a house where your boys can rough and tumble and not worry about breaking anything, then glass cabinets might not be in line with your vision.

Yes, in our last house, all I wanted were deep drawers everywhere instead of cabinets with drawers in them. I wish when we moved, I had made a list of everything we have in the kitchen because we had packed up all our stuff a solid four months before we started building and even decided to build. But I think I have a good general idea of everything. 🙂

      Thanks for the tips!

We are in the middle of a renovation and move here in Columbia, and we just went through the same kitchen dilemmas. We decided on… a pull out double trash can from “Rev a shelf”, a pot organizer pull out from a cabinet from Rev a shelf, pull out spice racks, a bunch of cabinets that have pull out shelves, and only one glass front cabinet door. We will see… those decisions are so hard!!
