adults can get these things?

So I have an ear infection. Seriously? Seriously?

I’ve had some bad congestion that started as allergies issues from the crazy pollen. There is so much pollen even though it’s 50 degrees. But the allergies turned to a sinus infection. And silly me… I just didn’t go to the doctor. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Then on Wednesday night, I realized that I couldn’t really hear out of my right ear and it just sounded like I was under water. It was a little bit painful, but nothing terrible.

And then when I went to bed that night, I was shocked at the pain. I think I got about four total hours of sleep between sitting up and repositioning and wanting to cry into my pillow. Adult ear infections are no joke, friends! Get thee an antibiotic immediately!

I went to an urgent care clinic early Thursday morning, and two hours later I got the ear infection diagnosis. And all kinds of prescriptions and drops to help me out.

I have a new appreciation for the horrible pain my sweet boys have endured over the years. They have both suffered through countless ear infections and both have a set of tubes in their ears. Hayes is currently fighting off his first ear infection since getting the tubes. He gets his allergies from his mama, and unfortunately he’s been super sick this week, too.

We’re hoping to enjoy Good Friday now that we’ve both been medicated.

Anyone have experience with adult ear infections? I honestly think the pain is worse than childbirth or my c-section. Take your Zyrtec and Mucinex, friends.

(And, no, they didn’t pay me to say that.)

My husband had a bad one a few years ago…literally spent two days on the coach in pain. Debrox seemed to help on top of antiobiotics. I have to use them occasionally w/ the boys too because they do not like their ears to be touched/cleaned and they get a lot of wax.

I can’t remember having one (my mom said I did as a kid) and the boys have them from time to time.

Hope you get some relief soon and feel better!!!

Both my boys were plagued with ear infections and also have tubes. I’ve had a few ear infections in my adulthood and something I do to help is heat the area. I have done a warm compress before and also put the hair dryer on low and just held it away from the ear a bit and that little bit of warm air is so helpful.

I can completely relate! I recently went to the doctor at the beginning of the week and was also diagnosed with a sinus infection. Doctor prescribed antibiotics, and I’m feeling somewhat better. I suffer from terrible allergies. Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra d…..none of it helps :(. I had terrible ear infections when I was younger – around your boys’ ages – and they are painful. I also had tubes places in my ears and that helped with the ear infections. I hope you and Hayes get some relief and feel better soon!

have you seen an allergist and been tested? I was tired of feeling like crap all of the time so I finally got tested and it turned out I was allergic to nearly every grass, tree, and mold that is prevalent in my area. It was no wonder I spent most of my life feeling miserable!

I started getting shots and for the first time in years, I am not miserable this allergy season. Just food for thought!!! If you have questions, feel free to email me!

I had an ear infection a couple of weeks ago too so I can relate. I took a Z pack and some nasal spray and felt better within a couple of days. Feel better soon!

Oh no! Hope the meds work fast. I really enjoyed the series on playing with our children. Thank you for showing the importance of play for our children.

    Oh, lady!

I am so sorry. I’ve gotten horrible ear infections since I was a pup and continue to get them into adulthood. Honestly, the thing that seems to have helped the most with pain over the years is if I get a hot pack (rice or water or whatever), wrap it in a towel, and lay on my side resting my ear on it. For some reason the combination of laying on that side, and the heat on my ear/face does worlds to resolve the situation.

    Feel better!

Just be sure to take the full course of antibiotics and if there is any (even slight) irritation left, go back to the doctor. I had some bad experiences during college with ear infections and it probably could have been better resolved if I and the doctor (@ the student health clinic :S ) had been more on top of getting the right antibiotics quickly. I remember I had gotten my wisdom teeth out a few weeks before and the pain was so bad that I thought I must have gotten a dry socket or something tooth related – nope just a crazy ear infection!

Ouch! I had a really really terrible one in high school where the glands were so swollen they had to put cotton in between them to get the drops in there–of that makes sense…so I feel your pain. I hope those prescriptions and drops help you make a quick recovery!

I had my first ear infection ever this Summer. I am 27. It was the worst pain I have ever been in and am including surgery to remove organs. I am so so sorry that you have one. I now have crazy empathy towards ear infections cause it just hurt so stinkin bad. Feel better!

Ugh! So it was an ear infection! Ha- between the two of us we just need a “speak no evil”. I hope the antibiotics work super quickly!

I had an sinus/ear infection right when I started teaching 10 years ago. I used to have them all the time as a child, but the pain had become a distant memory. Those things hurt! My husband, who has never had an ear infection his entire life, doesn’t get the immensity of the pain. There is nothing worse. My sister who has worse ears than I do, gets an ear infection every two or three years. Miserable. I feel so sorry for you and hope you feel better soon. It’s really hard to be a mom and be sick. It just doesn’t work well.

I had a bacteria infection in my ear that I also agree was worse than childbirth. I cried and cried. And it was while I was pregnant with my first so I couldn’t really take meds!

I never had an ear infection (that I remember) until I was 27…worst pain ever! It does give you a better appreciation for what our babies go through!

I’ll never forget the ear infection I had as an adult. I was a senior at Clemson (this was many years ago), and I was in pain like nothing I’d ever felt before. It took a couple of days for the medication to kick in completely. I was singing in one of the university’s choral ensembles, and the ear infection made me tone deaf to the point that I could not even attempt to participate in rehearsals for about a week. I thought back on that when my boys were babies and had ear infections-( both had consultations with ENTs for tubes, but neither ended up getting them), and this probably helped me be a more patient mother when they were up at night, whining, etc.

Oh, that stinks! I’ve had a few of those as an adult. The “childhood” illness that shocked me (and my doctor, and my husband, and everyone else who knew about it) was when I got hand, foot, and mouth disease after a ski trip last year. The doctor kept saying, “You’re in your mid-thirties… I just don’t understand how you caught this!” I didn’t understand it, either! LOL

Get some good rest and take care of yourself!

I get them frequently actually. They are horrible!! I have issues with with overusing q-tips. Apparently if you use then too often theft create tiny abrasions in your ears where water collects. 🙁

Go to an allergist (and take poor Hayes too!) I can’t even tell you how going to an actual allergist changed my life. I had the worst allergies, to everything that grows and bees, and now I barely even get the sniffles and I live in one of the heaviest pollen areas in the United States. After getting tested (which sucks if you are allergic to a lot) they gave me shots (and the times/dosage will depend on the severity of your allergies) and now I don’t even bother with Zyrtec except on a rare occassion.

My kids have never had ear infections and I honestly think it’s because we don’t drink milk and eat very little cow dairy. I got scolded by their pediatricians for not giving them milk, but there are many other ways to get calcium. The mucus + bovine growth hormone issues related to cow dairy are interesting to read about and study….and, if you cut out dairy for even a few days, you might notice a difference not only in the sniffly things but also tummy and sleep issues (for kids and adults). Feel better!

I’ve heard that theory before. I do think there is a lot of truth behind it. Hayes had chronic ear infections and now has tubes, but he has been lactose intolerant since before his first birthday and only drinks almond milk and we avoid giving him dairy. I have been avoiding dairy, too. I had horrible ear infections, and two sets of tubes as a child. So I think my poor kids just got their mama’s eustacian tubes and ended up with bad ear infections as a result 🙁

Ohhh no!! Crazy thing, I’ve never had an ear infection. BUT, the day I had B, Allen started complaining of his ear hurting (he had been sick, similar to the same thing you described). Well, he felt terrible the entire time, but he would never go to the hospital. I didn’t hear much else from him about it bothering him and about a day after we came home, his ear drum ruptured. I have no idea how he dealt with the pain/pressure from the ear infection for nearly a week. Then, he couldn’t hear for nearly a month!

I realized just how bad it must have hurt him when B had her first ear infection around Christmas, he felt terrible for her. I knew she hurt, but I couldn’t understand it like him, he was definitely giving her whatever she wanted for those few days.

Enough rambling, I hope you are feeling much better and enjoy Easter with your sweet family!

Alex gets ear infections all the time due to sinus infections. I always think I have an ear infection when I go to the doctor because my ears hurt when I’m congested, but they always tell me no, so I can’t imagine the pain of really having one! Our girls definitely have to fight ear infections and I have no doubt it’s genetic…they got their ears from their Daddy. 🙂

I hope you feel better soon and have a wonderful Easter weekend with your family!

The only ear infection I have ever had was the year I got married! I could not figure out what was wrong-how dumb. Luckily my almost 1 year old (as in turns 1 on Tuesday) has only had 2. Hopefully you will still have a wonderful Easter! Feel better soon.

Girlfriend! I’m thirty-? years old and have had tubes my entire life. Last set put in in 1999…still in there and thankful everyday! I truly feel your pain! Soooo sorry!!!!

A few years ago I developed a sinus infection in the airport while waiting to board a flight to go see a friend. I don’t know if I had an ear infection but flying with a sinus infection was the worst thing ever. It hurt SO bad.

Goodness! I’m reading back a few days on Bloglovin to catch up:) Hope you’re feeling better now, season changes are always so tough. Wish there was some way to have a allergy free house lol.

I can (literally) feel your pain. I am on my second of two ear infections in past five weeks. The ironic part of it all is that these are my first two ear infections…ever. I never had one as a kid! I, like you, went about a week figuring it was just a cold/allergies before finally dragging myself to the doctor, apologizing for wasting her time, figuring she’d say “it’s a cold, good luck!” The ear pressure and diminished hearing is unbelievable. With this second infection I also had the most swollen glands ever-just on the side of the bad ear. I went to urgent care and told her I had an ear infection-she said it wasn’t likely, but took a quick look and said “you absolutely DO have an ear infection!” I’m puzzled at why I’m getting them now, but am glad to know the symptoms so I no longer wait to get treatment. I’m hoping this 10-day course of amoxicillin finally kicks the infection to the curb, since the Z-pack did nothing the first time! Feel better soon!!

I am a few days late, so I’m hoping that you are feeling better now! Like someone mentioned- I started to feel better from allergies after getting tested and having shots! It makes a world of difference- maybe you should give that a try?

Neti pot. Neti pot. Neti pot. I am so convinced that it saved me from an ear infection from my last sinus infection that I got after my cold
