a brain dump because football season is upon us

1. Today marks the beginning of Gamecock football season. TC is very excited. And I think deep down I’m excited, but right now I’m just pretending to be excited.

Do you see these kids? These kids- and this girl- were super excited about football season. They went to all the games no matter the weather and no matter the score. They had all the time in the world.

And now here we are. We’re tired, and Saturdays involve a lot less football than they used to. These people watch most of the games on TV while entertaining their kids. (They also can’t find time to take pictures together, so we recycle pictures on the blog. Sorry, friends.)

I’m getting excited about football season. I promise. I’m getting there. By the end of the season you’ll be so sick of hearing me talk about football. Go Gamecocks!

2. Maybe we’ll take Hudson to a game this year. Could be fun! It could also be a disaster.

3. I have signed Hudson up for a little after school karate class. We may also regret this decision, but I’m thinking it will be fun. And a lot of his little buddies will be in there with him. It’s for preschoolers and it’s offered at the school. And if Mr. Miyagi is teaching the class, Hudson will be waxing on and waxing off in no time. Perhaps a little discipline?

4. While I’ve enjoyed having a summer break from reality TV, I kind of need some mindless entertainment. I’m thinking I’ll be watching Dancing With The Stars All-Stars. This is probably the first Todd has heard of this, so I’m apologizing in advance.

5. A few weeks ago, our pastor preached on James 3 and taming the tongue. This scripture convicts me every single time I read it, but this time it was even more convicting. He spoke a little bit on taming the tongue and how that translates to social media. Wow. Just wow. It has helped to keep Twitter off my phone and remember a lot of what I read in Jessi’s eBook. I think I’ll write a post on this soon.

6. Todd and I have been playing Scrabble at night this week. Neither of us had ever played before, but I’m addicted to Words With Friends. This obsession started when I was hospitalized a few weeks before Hayes was born. I have spurts of playing a lot and then not playing at all. So we decided to break out the Scrabble board. So far, Todd has only won once, but he’s a tough opponent.

7. You know what drives me crazy about Pinterest? I have no desire to put cute little faces on my kids’ sandwiches, yet there are pins everywhere of cute little sandwiches with faces. I have enough pressure to feed them a nutritious lunch, but here are all these pins of cute little sandwich faces?

Also- I have no desire to craft all day with my kids. Hayes eats crayons and Hudson would rather I make the craft for him so it’s “perfect” than do it himself. I like to pin recipes, party ideas, some gorgeous, non-DIY decorating ideas, and baby shower inspiration. And, yeah I know, to each his own. But I’m staying away from the cute lunches and the abundance of kid crafts.

What’s going on with y’all this week? Any exciting board game nights in your house? Are you excited about football season? Are you pretending to be excited about football season?

Lol, this cracked me up! Kids craft, eating crayons.. lol. How awesome is scrabble.. although its much easier on words with friends (am I the only one that does a little ‘trial and error’ with my letters on words with friends?!) 🙂

I pin crap all the time that I have no intention of actually doing. Is that sad or what? I like the pretty pictures. I wish I would do them though, but I know I won’t.

We don’t get American football in Scotland. I’m not going to lie, I miss it. It’s so…American. Makes me miss home. Good times.

I too love love college football, especially the college football of pre kids. Now I just hope my little one naps at some point during a game so I can watch. I partake in game day get together but most o my time is spent making sure my little one isn’t breaking something. Oh the days of tailgates and endless hours of game watching. I do think we may try to have babysitters one Saturday during one of our big SEC game so I can watch and yell in peace. Good luck tonight!

Would love to hear your thoughts on taming the tongue in social media. I think it should be a required class for all high school kids! LOL! On the pinterest stuff….yeah faces on sandwiches is where I would draw the line too. Actually, I cannot stand all the motiviation fitness stuff that people post. While I do enjoy reading them I am not going to make a board of that stuff. It’s like getting the cart before the horse or something….and most of the images of the fit women are so unobtainable for the regular Mommy. These people do this for a living you can tell.

Sandwich faces drive me batty too! I struggle to get a decent meal down into KP’s belly most days so the fact that it has a blueberry smile with string cheese hair won’t matter. Pinterest pressure is the devil!

We have season tickets this year {go Tigers! ;)} but I’m still pretending to be excited about football. Mainly I’m scared to leave my baby with my MIL during the games. Her and I are always butting heads a bit on parenting techniques so I’m scared she’s not going to stick to his routine. It seems a bit silly but I’m not sure if I will be able to truly enjoy the games at first.

  7. says

I’m pretending to be excited about football season too. Not because I don’t like football, but because it seems like it is on every single night. I like watching it on Saturday afternoons. I like watching our teams, but I really could not care less about what is going on with some team I have no allegiance to whatsoever. Ha!
My sister & I like to laugh at the ridiculous crafts on Pinterest, but most because neither of us are crafters & our mom wasn’t either so it is all so foreign to us!

  8. says

The Pinterest thing made me laugh. I don’t get Pinterest very much at all. But then I don’t cook and I’ve been in a decorating slump. And I’m so with you, I just do a dance if my kid eats! I’ve got no time for sandwiches with faces on them!!

  9. says

I haven’t watched DWTS in a few years, but I can’t wait for All Stars!! I am going to be cheering for Apolo, he’s my all time favorite!

I’m SO excited for football season and mostly it’s because I just can’t wait to see Marcus on the field again. Did you read Todd Ellis’ article that I tweeted? Marcus is really, truly an inspiration and the kind of player that comes along once in a lifetime. I love him and I’m so glad he’s back! Go Gamecocks!!!

I’m not excited, however, for the rise in blood pressure that football season brings. And since I’m pregnant I can’t even have a cocktail to take the edge off. It’s going to be a long three months! I will need you to help me stay sane … and stay off Twitter! 😉

    • says

I haven’t read it. I’ll go find your tweet now. 🙂 We LOVE Marcus so much. He goes to our church and he is just the best guy. We’re proud that he’s a Gamecock– and proud that he’s such a good guy who loves Jesus.

I’m with you on the rise in blood pressure. And Todd spends so much time hating Clemson– I would be fine never to watch another Clemson game in my life. Ha! And yes, let’s stay off Twitter and stick to texting.

I am so excited for football. In fact, I was that girl in the pictures like you above, driving to Boulder every weekend to watch my CU Buffs even though they have had horrible season since I graduated in 2001. Then graduate school happened on Saturdays, I got married and then pregnant. No Boulder game for me since 2003. However, a friend granted me tickets to the big showdown on Saturday and we are taking advantage of a babysitter and going to Denver. I couldn’t be more excited! I love college football! Oh, and I am thrilled to be an adult with my husband for about 7 hours! Sometimes I wish I grew up in the South because there would be more girls like me who love the game!

I love Pinterest for the ideas on clothing and recipes to cook. I pin all the time about food I have tried and it is a good location for those dishes instead of trying to remember what website I found them on. However, there is NO time for faces on my toddlers sandwich. She probably just look at it and eat her typical yogurt and berries for lunch. As for crafts…I believe that Madison gets plenty of craft time at church nursery. We still color A LOT at home but all the other things would only get half done and make a mess because she has the attention span of about one minute!

Can’t wait to hear more about taking Hudson to a game. I think he will be great!

  12. says

    1. Go Cocks! I completely understand your “fan-from-afar” syndrome.
    2. I have always loved Scrabble. I got tired of all the hokey words people would come up with when I’d play them in WWF and all the cheat apps soooooo…Shan and I started playing Scrabble around Christmas time. I taught S & F how to play this summer. I love the precious little words they come up with. It’s actually been a good teaching tool for them.
    3. Kids don’t care if they have faces on sandwhiches (at least mine don’t). Draw a picture on a napkin and throw it in the lunchbox! 😉
    4. Y’all doing Mr. Blaine Karate?
    XO
    See you soon-ish!

I love your posts like this – you are so real and cute. I think people have an odd obsession in general with turning food into things….it freaks me out during the holidays when a vegetable tray is in the shape of a snowman, or pretzels are bones, or strawberries are Santa hats. LOL It’s enough to prepare the food and put it on a pretty platter.

  14. says

I am so excited for football season!! We are Florida fans (Go Gators!) and have season tickets. I also like that I get some “me time” during the fall when my husband is glued to the TV for what seems like every single night. 🙂

  15. says

I am really excited for football season, but just wish our games were not so far away (about 5 hours each way). I especially love the early fall games before the weather turns cold and rainy here. I get a lot of great recipe ideas from Pinterest, but a lot of the ideas on there are not for me! As much as I love a good craft project, it has to be simple!

  16. says

I totally hear you… and we do not even have kids yet. My husband LIVES for football Satrudays (and sundays and mondays) and we used to tailgate every weekend! Now, I look forward to catching up on house projects and errands…lame, but I love it!

  17. says

I think they sell little shapes that will cut cute little faces into the sandwiches for you 🙂 but yeah, I’m totally with ya. I pin what I wanna pin that way I just remember to get back to it. Otherwise I just scroll right on through.

  18. says

We’re excited for football season, too! (I’m really more excited about making Oreo balls with the boys each game day!) Don’t hold it against me… we’re Clemson fans… but we are looking forward to watching Carolina tonight!

You made me laugh with your comment about Pinterest! I haven’t made faces on the boys’ sandwiches, but I have been cutting them out like dinosaurs. My attempt to trick them into eating sandwiches in the shape of a T-Rex has not been successful thus far!

  19. says

HA! I hate crafting..and luckily so does Charlotte for the most part. Also, does your church have the sermon online anywhere?? I would love to read/hear it! Oh and regarding football season…..

….I went to PSU. So sadly my excitement is non-existent this year 🙁

i think hudson is totally ready for a game. i’ve been taking olivia (just turned 3 in may) since she was a baby to tech games (yeah, i know, slightly different) and next weekend she’s going to her first away game in houston. i’m so excited! she LOVES going. now, she can get restless but there’s usually enough family sitting with me to help entertain her. or, we’ll just go down and watch the cheerleaders for a while! 🙂 try it. i think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

    • says

I took Hudson to a Tech game when he was about six months old and that was a lot of fun. It’s just so much more crowded and huge at the Gamecock games. I think we’re going to take him to one of the games against a smaller school, where there won’t be as many visiting fans. I think he’ll love the opening of the game.

  21. rbs2 says

well since knoxville is too far and not worth the $ this year since we will have a 1 yr old on our hands we will be in columbia for the UT game, or at least to tailgate with some friends for the game, even if they are gamecocks:) lol. and your comment about Hudson waxing on and off in no time was too funny, made me giggle 😀

  22. says

The way you feel about college football is the way I feel about baseball (Go Yankees!) Jeff and I used to go to a ton of games, including playoff ones. We haven’t been to a game since I was 5 weeks pregnant and I was so tired during that game and I whined, so no one had fun haha. We turned down an offer for playoff tickets last year and it made me die a little inside, but Landon was too little to leave for all that time while I was breastfeeding (there was no way I was going to pump at a baseball game either). I’m hoping next year we will be able to bring him to a game, but he will only be 2, so it might be a bad idea. We may very well be adding another baby into the mix by the following season, so it might be a loooong time before we go again!

I refuse to make artwork out of my kid’s lunch foods. Who has time for that? I like the idea of doing a few crafts here and there with my son, but not yet. Like Hayes, Landon tries to eat crayons, and I know he’d eat paint too. We’re not ready for that yet. I’d much rather just go to the park, zoo, children’s museum, etc.

  23. Nichole says

THANK YOU for your comment on Pinterest! My kids are almost the exact same age as yours and I am trying to figure out who actually does crafts like these with their kids. I help in my daughter’s Sunday school class once a month and I spend the whole time I’m in there doing crafts “with” (for) the three year olds! And my little guy totally eats crayons too…

    • says

hahaha. yeah, hudson’s preschool doesn’t really do crafts. they do “stations” and “centers” and if the kids want to free paint or color or anything like that they can, but i think it’s generally understood that most kids don’t just craft– adults have to help them.

so we just don’t get into all that at home. 🙂 hudson colors and they both play with play dough, but i’m just not ambitious enough to start crafting with my guys.

  24. Diane says

Wish you could have made the trip here to Nashville for tonight’s game. We had tickets but sold them! Rhys would have had a blast with Hudson and Hayes!

  25. says

Haha, that part about the cute little kid craft/ kid lunches makes me laugh. I do aspire to be a creative mom, because I find it fun, but Pinterest sometimes does take things to a whole ‘nother level. I like the idea of just leaving some of it off my pins and out of my sight.

  26. says

Glad we are playing WWF! Lately I’ve gotten hooked on Scramble with Friends – it’s a lot like Boggle. Who knew board games would come back to us as adults in a totally different format? And I love college football too and already find myself sighing and wondering when I can “waste” a Saturday watching tv with friends when I have some much else to do! Who am I?

  27. says

The Book of James. Oh Lawdy. That whole book kind of stings, doesn’t it? I studied it in a women’s Bible study and we spent a LOT of time discussing that particular part. And then when we got onto the subject of “well if I don’t say it but just think it, is that still bad?” Yikes. But even though at times it was kind of a harsh mirror held up to my face, I loved how frank and explicit James is about human behavior and how to be more Christ-like.

Anyways….not to get all Biblical on you but that book has a special place in my heart. 🙂

Great post! I can’t wait to read your post about #5! I’ve been so convicted about the words that I speak lately too and there are so many toxic influences around us on a daily basis encouraging negative speech and gossip. It’s hard! I love any post I can read about it and loved Jessi’s ebook! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I’m watching our Gamecocks with the hubs right now! (well really just listening to it). We are going to try and go to a game or two! I would love to take my 3 year old but like you said…that could be a disaster! I’m glad to hear your thoughts on the Pinterest stuff b/c I’m totally with ya!! I do good just to feed my kids decently healthy foods…much less making it look pretty! Love your brain dumps….so relatable!

    – I CANNOT WAIT to hear how Hudson does in karate, and I surely hope that he gets to wear a gi at one point? Cutest little ninja ever. Maybe he can be a karate man for Halloween and Hayes can be sushi? hahaha

    – I totally hear you on the Pinterest front. I’m exhausted just looking at everything on there; my Pinterest boards are basically just the place where cute ideas go to die. I looked at a ton of great food recipes to theoretically cook R, then got to lazy to cook myself so ate black beans straight out of a can for lunch today. Fail.

    – I was going to text you about Gamecocks football starting today, but then never got around to it. Glad I didn’t now, since you’re not 100% excited yet. haha

-YAY SCRABBLE! That is all. 🙂 Love you!

  31. says

I am cracking up at your comment on kid’s crafts. HAHA!! So funny. Amelia loves to craft so I feel the need to constantly find things that don’t take long and that she can do because she’s opposite of Hudson – she wants to do it all herself. I have to resist doing it for her. LOL

Scrabble is Alex’s favorite game because he knows he can always beat me. He knows ridiculous words that I’ve never heard of and I spell out things like TOOT. Because I’m smart like that.

I’m sorry I just said toot on your blog.

And the subject of taming the tongue…boy do we all need that lesson…over and over and over. 🙂

I want to be the mom who makes the sandwich faces. Really, I do. I also want to be the mom who scrapbooks beautifully. But, let’s face it. I’m only a wannabe. My kid hates sandwiches and I’m 10 months behind on his baby book (and he’s only 17 months…).

Football season….WOOT! Sometimes, in blogland, I feel like I’m alone, being up here in Big 10 country, but even so, ON WISCONSIN! My husband is a h.s. head football coach and before kids, I went to every single game, home or away. Now, I’m scrambling for sitters just to make it to home games. I miss it, but wouldn’t trade the life we have! Speaking of, I need to turn on the radio and listen to his pre-game interview! Tootles!

  33. says

I was so excited football season started this past weekend! Although I was sad to see Michigan start out with a loss. (i feel better that it was to Alabama, though. haha!)

I love playing Scrabble and Words with Friends! What’s your WWF username? Mine’s anniewiltse!
