an olympic-sized brain dump

One

Thank you all so much for your encouragement and your honesty yesterday. I’m working through this transition and just trying to get myself back to a peaceful place so I can enjoy it! In the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to share that I still have a few obligations to fulfill in the next few weeks and you’ll still see a few Huggies posts every now and then, including one later today. These opportunities help my family and I’m thankful for them.

Two

We are in the midst of Olympic mania around here. I kind of get the impression that Todd just watches to humor me, but I can tell he enjoys watching, too. Maybe not the women’s gymnastics so much, but he does enjoy it.

He especially loved watching Aly Raisman’s parents react to her uneven bar routine the other night. And then we cast Kristen Wiig as Aly Raisman’s mother.

I was so happy for the Fab Five last night! They looked so so happy, especially Jordyn Wieber. The smile that lit up her face during her floor routine was just radiant.

And MacKayla Maroney’s vault? Holy flying teenager, Batman! Incredible!

We were also super excited for Michael Phelps and his record-breaking medal count that he achieved last night. He’s just such a once-in-a-lifetime athlete and he’s been incredible to watch.

Todd has completely tolerated my constant bickering about NBC’s Olympics coverage. They tweet the results and hold back all the coverage for us in the evenings, which I understand, so I’m just staying away from Twitter. Except when NBC finally shows us the events, they take up so much of that coverage time with fluff pieces and awkward interviews.

Three

We’re leaving for vacation on Friday. I really cannot wait. I have lined up some really great ladies to guest blog while I’m away. I’m excited to turn over my little space on the internet to them to share what’s on their hearts.

Four

My Kindle is all set up for our trip. I’m looking forward to having lots of opportunities to read. But with the Olympics going on, I have a feeling we’ll all just be huddled in front of the TV every night on vacation because we refuse to miss a night of Olympic coverage. We just can’t get enough!

Five

Can we go back to 1996 and just watch the gymnastics Olympic Gala again? Anyone remember when the Magnificent Seven did “the macarena?” Classic!

Can we also discuss how crazy it is that the Fab Five is too young to really know what happened in 1996 with the Magnificent Seven unless they watch old VHS tapes (remember those?) or You Tube videos. I feel so old!

Six

Can y’all believe August is here? Where did the summer go? There are kids that are having their first day of school today. This baffles me. Time goes too fast.

It hadn’t even occurred to me how many years were between now and the 1996 Magnificent 7 until I heard someone say yesterday that not all of our girls were even BORN when the Mag 7 were happening. WHAT?! I felt so old, so quick. Amazing.

  2. says

I did realize that because I googled all the old Mag 7 girls to see what they’re up to and I was shocked to see that they’re all in their thirties! 1996 really doesn’t feel like 16 years ago.

Also….does anyone know why there were SEVEN gymnasts on a team in 1996 but now there’s only FIVE? I know that there are two alternates but…………

I loved Aly’s parents doing the routine right along with her. I coach middle school volleyball and discus and I’m sure my facial expressions and body movements are a hoot on the sideline too!

It is so much fun to watch the parents when the girls compete. I can’t believe that the Magnificent Seven was SO long ago – it feels like yesterday I was watching and cheering them on.

We said the exact same thing about Aly’s parents!
    Hilarious!
And I just mentioned yesterday in a post that I could easily be the mom of several athletes!
    Sad. Harsh reality.

    Y’all have a great vacay!

We’re obsessed with the olympics in our house right now too. I’m with you on being super frustrated with the spoilers! I’ve been avoiding Twitter all week but then our local news came on yesterday and announced that the fab 5 won gold and totally spoiled it for me 🙁 That picture of the Magnificent 7 definitely takes me back! Have a fantastic vacation with your family!

Those pictures feel like yesterday! I agree, watching the parents reactions is one of the best parts of the Olympics. It’s hard to imagine the incredibly hard work and committment that these entire families put in to achieving the goal of being a part of the Olympics. We watch the Olympics every night or the puppets as our 3 old fondly refers to them.

  7. says

How about the hair on the magnificent 7? Ha! I won’t blame you if you watch tv every night on vacation. Olympics are only every 4 years and who wants to miss out?

I’m obsessed with the Olympics, always have been! I love it all! I agree that NBC’s coverage sucks. I’ve been watching some things live while L sleeps, and I don’t mind the spoilers, but I am in the minority in that.

Phelps is amazing. He’s been so fun to watch the past several years. I don’t think anyone will ever accomplish what he has. The Fab 5 are adorable. They’re still so young and they’ve handled pressure so well and have accomplished so much.

When I was watching the floor routines last night, watching those girls flip and twirl in the air I couldn’t help but think “how in the world do they do that! and land on their feet!” The Olympics are kind of amazing to watch sometimes. Also, I totally remember the magnificiant 7, little Dominque doing her routine to ‘Devil Went Down to Georgia” which was kind of appropriate for the Atlanta games. Dominque Dawson turned into a beautiful woman-she was on an episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire a few weeks ago.

    Enjoy your vacation!

I TOTALLY agree about NBC! It’s beyond frustrating!!!!! My family & I are vacationing in Florida right now so we can’t even DVR their random coverage. Glad it’s not just me 🙂 Enjoy your trip – I’ve spent loads of time on my Nook here so I hope your Kindle reads are enjoyable!

All of the to-do about the broadcasting – plus the fact that our kids are at “grand camp” for the week – has kept me away from the Olympics this year. Since they aren’t covered in real time, I’m spending time with my husband when the Olympics are on – and we are making up for a serious lack of date nights over the last few years!
I did get a giggle when you mentioned feeling old because this year’s gymnasts are too young to remember 1996. I remember Mary Lou Retton’s performance in 1984 🙂 I did record the Opening Ceremony so I can watch it with my kids when they get home. I know my son’s class will be talking about the Olympics when they return to school – he even had some Olympics-related activities in his summer “homework” packet.

I had all of the ’96 gymnastics on VHS too! Last night after they won, the Fab 5 were talking about how it was the 2004 Olympics that really inspired them…they don’t even remember 2000! So insane to me…I remember more of 1996 than the later years, for some reason, maybe just because it was so excitng! The thing that bothers me a bit though, is how they are calling this such a historic win, since they hadn’t won since 1996…but that wasn’t that long ago! The night before, the British mens gymnastics team won a bronze, which was the first medal of any color that they had won in 100 years! That is historical, I think!

I am so glad you remember 1996. I grew up with Kerri, and every time the Olympics come around I am more amazed by her sacrifice.
