random things for a Monday

In case you missed my review of the great new Baby Orajel Naturals teething product, you can still read it here (though the giveaway has ended). I also wanted to let you know that if you are one of the lucky women attending the BlogHer conference in NYC on August 3-4, 2012, you can visit the Baby Orajel folks at Booth 1100 to learn more about taking care of your little one’s teeth and gums! They may even have some product samples to share with you so be sure to stop by.

1. I mentioned on Twitter the other day (and I’m pretty sure I mention this every single summer on my blog) that I really do not like the summer months in the south. I would pick up and move to the Pacific Northwest if there was a job for Todd. And then I’d come back for the fall and winter. Mainly just for football season. But, man, it’s hot!

2. I think I say, “oh man!” a lot because now Hudson says it all the time, too. It’s much cuter when he says it.

3. We tried to go for a walk tonight and take the boys on a ride in the wagon. It was pretty muggy, even at 6:30, but the gnats were terrible. Poor Hayes had gnats all over his face and in his eyes. I felt awful for him. Hudson kept blowing on Hayes’s face trying to get the gnats to leave him alone.

4. I know some people don’t like the way I write the possessive form of Hayes. I like to write “Hayes’s.” It’s the way I learned it and I trust Strunk & White. It’s rule #1. (I also understand that it just comes down to style preference, but Hayes’ and Hayes’s are both correct. I just prefer Hayes’s.)

5. We’ve had some very interested house hunters coming by our house this weekend. We just have our fingers crossed that one of them loves it enough to make us an offer.

6. Relatedly, one of the relatives of one of these house hunters popped by our house today during nap time without a realtor. They just wanted to take a look around so they could give their two cents. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

7. My summer anthem is Pontoon by Little Big Town. What a fun song!

8. Last night, I watched The Bachelorette finale while Todd worked. I had only seen one or two episodes of Emily’s season, but I always like to watch the end. Even though I can’t believe people still want to go on those shows.

9. And we are loving The Newsroom. We’re both totally addicted! At the end of last night’s episode I was crying. The characters are all just so great.

10. I’m getting my hair highlighted and trimmed tomorrow. I really don’t like sitting there for a few hours, but the result is so worth it!

11. Are you following me on Instagram and Pinterest? Here’s my Pinterest link and on Instagram I am “blueeyedbride.”

That is wild, that some relatives felt the need to just pop right in to see your house. What in the world did you do? We’ve sold two houses and nothing like that has ever happened to us. Selling a house is hard and it can be plain awful when kids are involved. We always wonder why WE have to be so accommodating to all the prospective buyers when no one is overly accommodating to us as buyers or sellers. If someone truly wants your house than it will happen whether you let their nosy relatives in, show your house with toys galore scattered everywhere or even say after nap time would work best for us. My dad always says, it just takes one buyer- that’s all you need! Hope your week gets off to a fabulous start!

This heat is just miserable. I was out for about 2 hours yesterday working on painting the dresser for this baby girl, and I came in soaked. It’s horrible. How about a road trip to Seattle?? πŸ™‚

    Fingers crossed for the house!!

Hayes doesn’t look too bothered with gnats–happy boy!!

I can’t name a child anything that ends with an “s” because I never understand how to write the possessive form. Haha! Wish I was kidding! That has always confused me.

Your boys are too cute in the wagon. I hope the buyers make you an offer! We just sold last year and it was soooo frustrating waiting on the right people to walk through the door of our house!

  5. says

I can’t believe an interested buyer’s relative felt it would be appropriate for them to drop by on their own! Did y’all let them look around? I do hope your house sells quickly! I heard Pontoon for the first time yesterday and I love it!

I live in Scotland and we never have favorable weather. BUT, I feel for you guys. I think we definitely have better than you do right now. It’s been about 55-60 degree’s with a cool breeze and some rain. I grew up in West Virginia and I don’t think I’d make it if I was back there right now.

We had someone come by our old house when it was for sale and said they wanted to just look around and that their realtor told them it would be okay! I told them they were more than welcome to make an appointment through our realtor and without that there would be no looking! They came back with their realtor and ended up being the one to buy the house!

We are loving Newsroom too! We haven’t watched last night’s episode yet, but I heard it was fantastic.
I can’t get over how cute your boys are in their wagon!

I teach fourth grade English (in Texas), and the way you write “Hayes’s” is the way we teach our kids to write possessives. If they wrote it the other way on a state test they would be incorrect, and this is true for most, if not all, states. The kids are taught that when you just add an apostrophe then the word is a plural possessive. This drives my husband crazy, and he forever argues with me about it. But it’s what the newest grammar books teach. I’m sure that it will change again in ten years. Just thought I’d share. πŸ™‚

the gnats here are really bad too! I got one of those Off propeller thingies that I put on P’s stroller to keep bugs off but it doesn’t seem to detract the gnats at all!

We’re from outside Dallas, TX, and am used to heat, but we’ve been traveling to see family & friends as well as for my husband’s work for the last month and I swear the heat wave is following me! Right now we’re in Northern Minnesota for two weeks and where normally it’s in the mid 70’s the other day was 96…and most people don’t have air conditioning and all of the lakes (where you normally go swimming) have tested for bacteria since flooding a month ago and aren’t swimmable! I can’t wait to get home to my nice clean pool and air conditioned house!

I would definitely spell Hayes’s the way that you do. Good luck getting the house to sell! That’s so exciting! Are y’all planning on building eventually? I made Ryan watch the Bachelorette with me. I watched maybe 3 episodes, but decided I really liked Emily so I kept watching.

I’m so sorry its so hot out there! We visited friends in NC in July a few times and it was too humid and hot to even walk a few blocks to the pool. I hate feeling sticky.

Its funny that someone just stopped by your house with not realtor, etc. They’re lucky you’re a friendly kind person!

  14. says

I cannot even imagine the humidity down south right now. It’s horrible in Ohio right now too!! Most of the summer it’s been 100 degrees (highly unusual!) and muggy. I’m over it! Especially since I’m pregnant this summer!

  15. says

I totally get the summer thing – I have been dying when we walk the dog at night even at 10 p.m. Georgia is gorgeous 3/4 of the year. July – you just want to melt…the only positive is you don’t need moisturizer because its that humid!! (I also adore the Pontoon song!)

You will forever be my grammar guru, E! I wasn’t aware that the possessive issue was one of style (kind of like using the Oxford comma), I just always try to copy whatever you do in this instance πŸ™‚

I am loving The Newsroom too! It has been especially interesting for me to watch since there is so much talk of the Koch Brothers on the show… I do have to say, I was a little peeved by the Koch episode where they interviewed the Tea Party representatives about Koch and they said they didn’t know who the Koch Brothers were… In the show, the Tea Party reps were from Manhattan, Ks which is less than 3 hours from here- since Koch is one of the biggest employers in the entire state, and a TON of Kansas State (located in Manhattan) grads work there, I find it unlikely that they would have no idea who the Koch Brothers were. I feel like Sorkin should have chosen a different town in this case. Rant over. πŸ™‚

    3. Have you tried the bug bracelets kids/people can wear? Maybe that would help.
    4. I always second guess if it’s s’s or s’
    7. Love this song!

Sometimes I get frustrated with the rain, but the Seattle summer weather makes up for it! It’s usually in the 70s and sunny, and days above 90 are rare. Hopefully you get some relief from the heat soon. Good luck with the house selling!

  19. says

The gnats are beyond frustrating this summer! We were at the Irmo house this weekend moving out and the hubs had me help move a trailer in our backyard. Not two minutes into it I was running away because I couldn’t see!

I’m sorry the house selling is taking some weird turns. I’d be so shocked if someone asked me to come inside without an appointment.

I have actually wondered about the correct way to make the “es” possessive for 4 years now. Our last name is Barnes, so when something is mine – I never know if its supposed to be Kelly Barnes’ or Kelly Barnes’s. Glad to know that I am correct either way!
Also, super weird about the relative dropping by – did you let them in?

I really love the freezer meal idea! This is so convenient for those nights that time for cooking is just not possible. Thanks for the tips! πŸ™‚
