hand, foot & mouth… again

Well, the summer is here. And here I’d been counting down to summer because I thought it would be the time when we could be exempt from sickness.

We had Hudson’s 3-year-old well visit on Monday of last week. I joked when we were there that we’d be back by early the next week at the latest because we were all at VBS and it was inevitable that someone would get sick.

And sweet Hayes is sick. When I saw the 102.7 on the thermometer I was really scared. I took off his doc band and gave him some fever reducer to see if that could bring it down quickly. And it did, but he was just so fussy.

Our pediatrician did a strep test on Friday, and she said she was 90% sure Hayes had strep throat. And she told me she’d give me a prescription for an antibiotic for both boys, because if Hayes had it, Hudson would have it soon. She said Hudson’s throat looked bad, but not nearly as bad as Hayes’s.

She told us to go home and she’d call us with the results. (This is when both boys were really ready to go home and couldn’t possibly wait another 7 minutes for strep test results.)

She called back a few minutes after we got home and told me that the strep test was negative. There are certain times when you hope for an antibiotic, and this was one of them. But we didn’t get an antibiotic. She just assumed it was a bad sore throat and he just needed some time.

But then on Saturday morning, we saw it. The tiny little bumps on Hayes’s lips and on his hands. And then we saw them on his bottom.

Hand, foot and mouth disease strikes again.

It’s pretty much awful for a baby. I think it’s awful for anyone. But for little ones that can’t communicate much, it’s just awful.

But Hayes has been a trooper. He’s eating his Pedialyte pops and drinking lots of cold water and cold juice. He’ll cry out in pain every once in a while, but he’s trying so hard to be happy.

Hopefully just another couple of days and we’ll be good as new. And hopefully Hudson won’t actually get this!

We had a good Father’s Day. Todd and Hudson went to church and Hayes and I stayed home. Then Todd and his dad went to play golf in the afternoon and I stayed home and played with the boys.

I hope you all had a great weekend– and I hope that hand, foot, and mouth doesn’t find its way into your home! Yuck!

We’re laying low and just waiting for hand, foot and mouth to leave the building.

Poor baby!! That seems to be so common…I hear of kiddos getting it a lot. I hope it leaves your home soon and doesn’t come back! 🙂 That picture of Hayes is SO CUTE.

Poor Hayes! We had it this spring too, it is miserable. I ended up getting it too, not so much the bumps but the terribly high fever and excruciatingly painful sore throat. I’m glad he’s drinking/eating, I couldn’t get Simon to drink anything for two days. Very scary!

oh no! sorry to hear he has it and I hope for your sake Hudson doesn’t get it. Olivia had it a couple months ago and it wasn’t fun. And I agree, while I don’t want to medicate her unless I have to, sometimes you just want an antibiotic to kick it a little faster. Good luck!

Uggh! We have had that too. It’s pretty bad stuff. My 3 year old ended up with it too so keep your eyes out for Hudson. Evie mostly had a high fever of 105 and wanted to sleep all the time for about two days. It’s hard to see them sad and hard on the Mama to take care of sad, cranky babies. Hang in there. It will be over soon.

Ugh, it’s going around like crazy in PA… hand foot and mouth AND strep. My son’s baseball team had HF&M going around and I was terrified that Gunner was going to get it. I’m sure we missed that battle because of the fact that he has all of his own gear and doesn’t use any team items (bats, helmets, gloves, etc.).

Gunner had strep about 1.5 weeks before HF&M started going around. His little girlfriend has had strep 4 times in the last 5 months!

When I was about 5 we were at a beach on vacation and I got HF&M and it was miserable. It hurt bad enough to walk, but then throw a sandy beach in there and it was torture!

Hope the little guys get over it lightening fast!

Yucky! I hate hearing this. I actually am infected with it myself right now and it’s terrible! Luckily my little guy has not gotten it this time and hopefully it’s the same strain he had the first time so he should get infected again. Advil has helped me so if he seems to be fussy you may want to try a pain reliever. Hope he feels better soon!

Ask you pediatrician about “pink magic”. It’s equal parts malox and liquid Benadryl. It got us through HF&M. My sweet bebe wasn’t eating and would finally eat after a dose of the “magic”. Make sure you talk to a Dr. for dosage. Hang in there.

Noooooo juice!!! the acid in it will irritate the sores and cause more pain.
Hope that it’s contained and goes away quick! poor little guy 🙁
