our first week of summer

We drove up to Greenville this weekend to celebrate the precious miracle of Anne’s daughter, Mary Brooks’s life. It was so much fun to see so many good friends and so sweet to meet little Miss Mary Brooks. And all of our kids are finally noticing each other, so they just ran and played. We love any excuse to go to Greenville, but we love Anne’s family and loved being there for such a special celebration.

Posting will be a little light this week. My brother is here visiting and Hudson and Hayes are absolutely loving having their Uncle Walker here.Β Walker has been so great to have here. When Todd is at work he has been so great about playing with the boys. And I just enjoy his company.

We’re just enjoying a lazy week with nothing on the calendar except fun play dates in the backyard with friends and swim lessons early in the morning.

We went to my friend Anna’s house today. Her girls are the same age as Hudson and Hayes, so we always have a Β great time with them. Hayes did a lot of toddling around the yard.

The kids enjoyed popsicles. This was actually Hayes’s first popsicle to feed himself and it’s safe to say he loved it! We were able to get all the kids to sit on their bottoms to eat the popsicles, so I got a rare photo of Hudson and Hayes together.

Hudson and Gracie hopped in the Jeep Power Wheels and it looked like a flash forward to their first date in 15 years. So cute! We just can’t show this picture to Gracie’s dad!

We’re enjoying the lazy days and the slower pace. This is exactly what I hoped for this summer. We’re only a few days in, but I’ve loved the extra cuddles and the fun, creative ways we’re finding to pass the time and be lazy.

I even went so far as to let my huge frizzy hair air dry today because I just didn’t really care and didn’t want to spend an extra thirty minutes drying my hair. Hudson and I cuddled up in his bed tonight and read more books than we normally do.

We had a long dance party in the living room to Moves Like Jagger and some Disney tunes. We ate sandwiches for lunch and leftovers for supper. I keep remembering that the days are long, but the years are short. And this summer may seem long at times. I may be Googling “preschool activities” some days to look for ways to keep Hudson challenged and happy.

But right now I’m loving the low key days. The mornings spent in the sunshine and the afternoons spent cuddled up on the couch. I hope your summers are off to a great start!

Glad you are enjoying a laid back summer so far. Our weather turned ugly again (cold and rainy) so we’ve been stuck in the house. PS I blame you for my Bridier Baubles obsession. My closet thanks you, my husband does not. πŸ™‚

I love, love, love the one of Hayes staring up at Hudson like he just hung the moon. Don’t you hope it’s always like this? One other thing that made me laugh – you mention your brother, Walker. My son (who turned 1 on 4/17) is named Walker…this is kind of an odd coincidence but he was thisclose to being named Hayes. We didn’t decide between the 2 names until he was being taken to the NICU after his birth. It’s just ironic given neither Walker or Hayes is a common name and you have both in your family. Our older son (almost 3) is named Holden. I relate a lot to your posts but haven’t commented before. Keep on writing!

Oh my goodness, my boys adore popsicles!! It’s like preschool crack;) And I totally know what you mean about lazy, summer days. I have no scheduled activities and am so excited about it so we can fill our days with the pool, parks, and just hanging out together. Isn’t summer the best?!?! And let me know if you find any good preschool ideas for your older one-I’m always looking for things!

Sweet pictures!! Your boys are adorable! Our summer started today and I’m already looking forward to planning fun little outings and special memory making fun for the summer. Popsicles, baby pools, trips to the library, Chuck E. Cheese, picnics, the park, wagon rides, playing in the sprinkler, going out for ice cream. Ahhh. The stuff summers are made of. It’s so true that the days are long but the years are short. SO true. I think I should put that quote on my refrigerator or something. Because summers are also made of hot, sweaty, stir crazy, whiney, too-much-time-on-our-hands family members. Ha!

It sounds like y’all have had a great start to summer! If you haven’t tried it, you need to go to the Lazy Goat next time you’re in Greenville. It’s great!

It sounds like a great summer to me : ) As you said, the days are longer but the years are short. I might use it like my new life mantra.

Do you ever get the Oriental Trading Company catalogs? Of course you can go to their website, but it’s one instance where I actually prefer the catalog because there are literally thousands of products on their site, and it’s not easy to wade through it to find good stuff. But the catalogs are categorized, like the recent ones that are specifically filled with summer activities. So you should definitely go to their website and put in your address to get the catalogs. . .and then find some really good, cheap activities that are nice to have on hand to pull out when you’ve got a restless preschooler and an hour with nothing to do. Hayes is too young for pretty much all of it, but Hudson would love some of the stuff. For example, my girls love the create-a-sticker-scene sets. For the summer I got a pack of the summer beach scene ones (you get pages that look like a beach with ocean and sky, and then a page of stickers to make the scene–kids, beach balls, seagulls, shells, towels, etc.), and I got a set about the five senses–a sheet with columns with pictures at the top, of an ear, a nose, a mouth, eyes, and fingers, and then sheets of stickers with things they can categorize into what you can smell, taste, hear, etc. In the past I’ve ordered a space one (with the planets to put where they belong in order around the sun), ones for specific holidays (they loved the make-your-own haunted house at Halloween), etc. They’re just a good little activity to pull out when you need a preschooler to get all excited about some stickers. And that’s just one tiny example of the activities they have. . .every kind of craft/design-your-own/game/art project/etc, that you can think of. In every kind of theme (summer/fourth of July/vacation Bible school are the big ones for this time of year). And I love that they’re super cheap and they have free shipping codes all the time, so I’ve been marking my catalogs and making an order three or four times a year to stock up on things to pull out when I need to entertain the girls. I have to say, it’s the kind of catalog that I would have thought was, uh, aesthetically offensive, if I had seen it before having kids. I would have been snobby and thought that I would never be the kind of mom to buy that kind of cheap, ugly plastic junk for my children. But then life happens and you realize that even though books and puzzles and beautiful wooden toys are fantastic, sometimes you just need the half hour of peace that can be bought with some cheap plastic stuff that gets little kids all excited and engaged. So eh. It’s not beautiful and high quality stuff. But the kids love it and at least it engages their brains more than another episode of something on Sprout, right?
