fun in Columbia this week

On Monday night, Todd and I had the most fun night out. Our friend, Susie, gave us tickets to the City Roots Farm harvest dinner. The City Roots Farm is an in-town sustainable farm in the middle of Columbia, about a mile from our house.

At the harvest dinner, guests are served a three course meal plus dessert. The courses are prepared from fresh vegetables harvested that day from the farm. They partner with other local farms for the meat and fish.

We had a great family-style meal and were pleasantly surprised to sit with some of our friends. I also saw a friend that I hadn’t seen in a couple of years. It was such a fun evening!

The table setting was so simple, but so cute. I loved the little sunflowers and mason jars.

We got to tour the farm before the dinner began. We saw chickens and lots of fresh produce. It really is the neatest thing that this is in the middle of town.

There was a cocktail hour before dinner was served.

Each course was paired with wine and beer for us to taste. This was quite possibly the best salad I’ve ever tasted. We also had mahi mahi with jalapeΓ±o remoulade and fresh collards. Then our final course was bison skewers and orzo. There were a lot of “tatonka” jokes at our table.

Last night my mom and I went to see The Lucky One when Todd got home from work. We got the boys fed and Todd put them to bed so we could go out. I loved The Lucky One book, so I was excited to see the movie. I enjoyed it. Zac Efron has really grown up. Hee hee.

After the movie, we drove over to Cafe Caturra for some appetizers and prosecco. It was a gorgeous night and we just liked sitting outside and getting to spend some time together.

Hudson and Hayes have been playing together more and more lately. Hudson is really good about giving Hayes certain toys to play with– the ones that he’s allowed to chew on.

We’ve been working on getting Hudson to stop being so defiant. We told him that any time he shouted “no” at me he would go to time out. So every single time he has shouted “no” at me, he goes to time out. And it is so funny. It has definitely worked. And today, I asked him to sit in his chair to eat his supper and he said “no” then went to time out. He came back and I told him to get in his seat for supper. And he just shook his head “no” but never actually said it. We were trying so hard not to laugh at him. Smart stinker!

Hudson has “water day” at school this morning, so he was pretty excited. He won’t be going swimming, but he kept talking about going to “the peach” when we were putting his swimsuit on him this morning. I’m getting excited for summer!

What FUN!!! There is nothing better than spending time with your mom, right?! Maybe I will take my mom to see that movie Saturday night… it sounds cute. Oh, and you both look gorgeous :). Thanks so much for your note. I keep thinking about the post you wrote a week (or 2?) ago about feeling unsettled. I have felt like this all week, and have been trying to look to God for the answers. It’s not easy, and it’s nice to know that other moms feel the way I’m feeling right now. xo

I actually find it incredibly difficult not to laugh at the defiant little ways of my own little stinker. I know that they’re bad habits to form and I’ll be the one regretting them but omg how cute are they when they figure things out?

    Hi Erin,

First, I love your blog! It provides me w/ a few moments of “happy” each day! The bday party was amazingly well done. Love those bright colors and the pics of the adorable bday boy!

I have a blog suggestion/favor to ask, my sister and I are putting together a Mother’s Day brunch this weekend and were curious if you have any suggestions/recipes? I know you’ve posted recipes in the past but any quiche or bfast-y type food ideas would be much appreciated! And maybe there are others out there pulling together a similar party for Sunday.

Happy Mother’s Day to you and thank you for sharing all of your fun adventures with your sweet little boys.

Your dinner on the farm sounds amazing and you and your Mama are so cute. I had to laugh when you wrote about Hudson just nodding “no” vs. saying it out loud. (LOL) They are too smart for their own good sometimes. πŸ™‚

girl. we are dealing with defiance in the worst way over here, too. it’s like it just came out of nowhere. one day she’s all yes ma’am, yes please, and the next day she’s screaming NO at me like i’m trying to kidnap her or something. it’s awful. luckily it hasn’t happened in public (yet). but i know it’s coming. libbi puts herself in time out, too. she’s even gone ahead and given herself a spanking so i don’t have to. isn’t that helpful of her? πŸ™‚

Just started to read your blog, but this dinner looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just wait until your little one gets a tiny bit older-they start fighting back! My three year old and almost 18 month old have recently started fighting over the same toys and it’s enough to make one go batty!

erin, are you reading any books or do you have any advice for little boys that are very…..”two?”

How funny, my dad and stepmom were telling me about the urban farm when they were here. I love to read your posts because Columbia is where I lived until the end of Elementary school and then I visit my dad and my sister (until she graduated from USC and moved), so it brings back a lot of memories. My stepmom was saying how we need to go to a baseball game when we come next. πŸ™‚

    Have a great Thursday!!

    Hey Erin πŸ™‚

How awesome to attend a Harvest dinner, eating fresh vegetables harvested that very day! I saw an episode of Real Housewives Miami where they did this and it looked so cool. Except they were complaining they were sitting amongst bugs haha.

Oh girl the days of defiance and straight up battling that goes on around here w Ryder! It’s a miracle I haven’t killed him, (Jk!) All day long he tests me and pushes buttons and by bedtime he’s an angel. Timeouts get “no!!” it’s the worst!

Also I love that you got some time w your Mom! That’s the best medicine when having a hard week with kids ha!

Hey, is that little toy above made by little people? Ive been looking for one like this but don’t know what it’s called. We don’t have toys r us in St Simon’s, so I’m limited to target and a small toy store. I didn’t know what to search for on amazon. I’d appreciate it!!
