the wrong number that wouldn't quit

On Easter Sunday, Todd, the boys and I were on our way home from church. We turned onto our street and another car was turning off of our street. It was a big, white truck and the driver looked identical to someone I used to work with.

So I pulled out my phone and found my former coworker’s number saved and shot him a text. He lived in New York before he moved here, so I remembered that when I saw the (212) area code before I sent the text. The text said, “Hey! I am pretty sure I just saw you driving a big white truck on my street!”

So a couple of minutes later I got a response that said, “How you get this number?”

I just assumed that my friend had changed his number and now someone else had the number. So I just didn’t respond.

A couple of minutes later, my phone rang and it was my friend’s number. I answered and said, “Hey! How are you doing?”

It wasn’t him. The voice on the other end sounded nothing like him and the guy said, “Who is this and how did you get this number? How do you know I drive a white truck?”

Uhhh…. So I explained that a friend of mine used to have the number and I’m so sorry for texting the wrong person. I wished him a very happy Easter and thanked him for understanding.

At this point, Todd’s parents had arrived at our house. I had put some of our Easter lunch side dishes in the oven. We were hiding Easter eggs for Hudson to hunt.

Then another call came in from another (212) area code number and I answered. It was a girl. And again, I explained to her what had happened. She said, “Okay. Bye.”

By now, I was getting all worked up because it was an innocent mistake and I was just trying to say hey to an old friend.

While we were hunting Easter eggs with Hudson, I missed three more calls from random (212) area code numbers. At this point, Todd just told me to stop answering the calls. So I did.

But then one final text came in that made me say, “What in the world?! This is bonkers!”

So I decided to respond to this one because his girlfriend was obviously checking his messages and I thought, “It’s Easter. I need to nip this conversation in the bud and let this guy know that I just thought I was sending a message to an old friend. I’m not a threat to this fella’s girlfriend. I live 1,000 miles away. I don’t know these people. We’re just trying to have a good Easter.”

I sent my final message and that was it. But sheesh. What a strange back-and-forth.

I never did get in touch with my former coworker. But I will still swear that it was him driving down my street in a big white truck. It’s a shame I don’t have his number.

Has anything like this ever happened to you?

If someone calls or texts me and they have the wrong number, I just let them know they have the wrong number and it’s over.

EEEKK! Oh geez!! How unfortunate! In your defense, if their relationship ended over something silly like this it was probably not a good relationship to begin with! Yikes! Funny story though!!!

OMG, Erin. This made me about pee my pants. I have gotten strange texts from random numbers and just ignored them. From now on, I’ll just assume it’s you 😉

    My goodness! How crazy!

yeah, Chad has a random person calling him from a local number, actually. But the weird part is that they call over and over again and ask for the same person. And then get argumentative when he tells them they have the wrong number. SO strange!!

Wow. Can you say cray-cray? I will never understand why people worry so much about someone calling/texting the wrong number. I once accidentally dialed the wrong # to a movie hotline, told the lady who answered as much, and she STILL proceeded to call me back several times to ask me why I had called her number. People are so weird.

I have definitely had this happen before, except it was a foul-mouthed teenage girl and she texted and called me for days until she finally got nothing in return and stopped. My thought is… “What in the world? Find something better to do! ” 🙂

Oh, Erin! This happened to me about a year ago. I got a phone call from someone who said I was trying to “Start stuff.” I don’t even remember all of the details but apparently I was trying to come between a couple, too. I quit answering and I got the UGLIEST texts from these people. I was invited to meet up somewhere so he could “settle things” with me. I finally texted back that I was a married mama and I had no interest in breaking anyone up or getting into a fight. They didn’t believe me and kept on so we had the number blocked. Yikes.

My husband and I had a discussion about this the other day ~ he got a text from a number we didn’t know that said “I am done with my anger management class.” We suddenly found ourselves in a conundrum ~ reply back that it’s the wrong number and create anger? DON’T reply back and then the person sending would potentially be angry with the no response from the number he/she thought was texted….Dilemma! 🙂

btw, we opted not to text back.

WEIRD! A year or so ago, I was getting random texts late at night (when Bill was traveling, which scared me) that said, “Hey. What u doing” and such. I texted back “wrong number” once and the person replied back, “You just gave me this number on the bus.” SO, my guess is that someone was giving out a false number on the bus to someone he/she didn’t want to talk to and it was randomly my number.

P.S. I’m guessing it was over long before you sent your text and she was just looking for an excuse to really end it.

Oh my goodness! That’s crazy! Completely unfortunate about the white truck coincidence.

I randomly get texts asking “when da gym gonna b open”. Not even kidding. It’s always from a different number too. Apparently the person who used to have my number was a gym owner. I’ve had my number for 5 years though, so why are these people just now trying to go to the gym? Haha.

I always get calls from people trying to order Papa Johns haha!

Oh, this has SO happened to me! Several yrs ago I had bought my very first international plane ticket. I was finally going abroad. I text a bunch of friends at once. I got several congrats from friends but there was one that wasn’t so nice.

This one text wouldn’t stop coming in. It was obviously not the right number for my old friend and now the person on the other number was harassing me. This was before unlimited texting. So, I was paying for every single one. I sent a few back that I had obviously gotten the wrong number and that I was sorry. But they wouldn’t stop. So, I called the number. He answered and went on a rant about how he didn’t care about that I bought an international ticket, but he did care that I screwed his friend over. Um, who was this?! He was yelling and screaming at me and I had no idea who he was. I hung up and text him back the situation. Over 200 texts (he still didn’t believe me) and 3 phone calls later he said he was sorry and he thought I was somebody else. It was an ordeal. I mean what?!?!? It was the texting that never ended. I was actually crying and calling the phone company to get the number blocked it was so bad.

um yeah.. but they were the one who called me- apparently some girl(could it really have been her?) gave him (my)wrong # the night before. he answered my hello with “alicia keyes, whassup?!” I said sorry wrong #. dude would NOT give up, started texting me that I shouldn’t diss him and stuff. tried to get his # blocked but couldn’t without paying a lot. fortunately he gave up after a day.

Weird! I have never had anything like that happen, but i did enter my teenaged son’s number into my phone incorrectly and the first text I sent him said that it was time for him to come home. I got a text back that said “who is this?”. I thought teen son was trying to be smart so I sent a text back that said “What do you mean who is this? This is your mother!” The other person texted back “I think you have the wrong number”. It was then that I decided to double check the number and realized my mistake. I sent a text that said “sorry” and they sent a text back that said ” No worries, it brought back some old memories!”

  14. says

That is nuts. I once sent a picture to a friend of all us at dinner. And the person on the other end sent back a strange response and then starting texting me every day for a week. I finally called my cell provider and told them to block texter. It was crazy!

Hope y’all had an amazing Easter besides that little unfortunate situation.

Someone sent me a text once (they had the wrong number) meant for their lover, telling them they were breaking off the affair and staying with their husband. Well, okay!
I also accidentally dialed the wrong number once and had a nice conversation with a man I thought was my dad. I asked if he was on his way home, he said yes, asked him about his day, told me it was fine. Halfway through I realized my mistake, freaked out and hung up. Neither of us had a clue the whole time we had been talking.

I get wrong number texts quite often. I just shoot them a text that says “Hey wrong number”. They send one back that says “Sorry”. I send one more that says “No prob.”, and it’s over. That is the most insane conversation ever. And on top of that, about 2/3 of my family and friends drive white trucks (we live in Texas . . . trucks are popular). White trucks are pretty common. Clearly these people had a lot of major issues before you accidentally sent the wrong number text.

wow! i’m SO sorry this is happening to you. i’m guessing that this wasn’t the first suspected breach of trust (real or imagined) if it ended the relationship.

    mercury must be in retrograde….

i literally JUST sent a text to the number of a friend who is moving to LA ( i missed their going away party over the weekend and wanted to try to see them before they left).

i texted “when are you leaving?” i just got back a “who is this?” response. i replied with a detailed text explaining that it was me and that i was sorry i had missed their party because i had spent the last 7 hours seeing both parts of “angels in america” back to back and it was 12:30 am when were left the theatre and pouring rain and we guessed that their party wouldn’t still be going.

    no response.

then i check in here and read about what happened to you…lol!

When I’ve accidentally sent out a text or called a wrong number, I don’t recall ever having anyone give me problems on the other end of the phone once I figure out my mistake and apologize. However, late last year, I started getting an influx of calls at my OFFICE that were wrong numbers. I would answer with my standard greeting and the callers would say, “Uh, oh, I think I have the wrong number.” Ok, no problem. This carried on for weeks, and it was usually around 10:30-11:00 every day. Finally, I decided to ask one of my callers who they were trying to contact. Apparently, there was a barbecue place in New Jersey that had MY phone number on THEIR flyer for takeout orders!

this also reminds me of an email exchange i had with a friend. or thought i did. i have a friend with a very unusual first and last name. somehow i recorded his email address as firstnamelastname@gmail.com – a very typical convention, right?

well, i sent him emails about seeing a play that he was in and he replied that it wasn’t him. my friend is a bit of a prankster i thought he was pulling my leg. i kept emailing him…even going so far as to say “silly goose! i know it’s you” and mentioning quirky things about him (like the fact that he has a pet chincilla).

the guy was very nice and kept patiently responding that i had the wrong email and that perhaps i should call my friend to confirm. what finally got me was that he said he’d lived in india for the last 27 years. my friend just turned 24. i called my real friend up and he confirmed that this guy had the same first and last name. he also told me that his OWN MOTHER had made the same mistake in emailing the guy in india…lol!

This is crazy! About a year ago, I started getting calls asking for the [city I live in] Police Department. I would get like a couple a week. I would kindly tell them that they had the wrong number and hang up. After a month or so of this happening, I decided to Google the police department and I saw on their contact page that they had MY cell phone number as they contact number! It was crazy. I contacted them and they got it fixed. Thank goodness! 🙂

People always call me looking for cvs and I have had the same number for the last eleven years. I guess it must be one number off. That is a crazy story though

  22. says

This is crazy!!! Reminds me JUST how crazy some can be.
I got calls from a school about a little boy who always got in trouble for about a month after I got my cell phone, the teacher would leave messages about his behavior.

  23. says

LMAO. I think the weirdest we’ve ever had was my husband’s phone rang, he asked me to answer it, and the woman on the other end was PA-ISSED that “my [expletive] trashy [derogatory term for african-american’s] toosh was answering her Orangjello’s phone”

Yes. Orangjello. I just laughed and hung up.

  24. says

Guys (never any women) call my cell all the time looking for “Amanda”… they even leave me voicemail messages. Clearly, my voicemail says.. “hey you’ve reached Shirra…” Do people not listen? Anyway, I finally figured out that “Amanda’s” phone number is very similar to mine (just one number off).. she lives in Columbia too… so now instead of saying you have the wrong number, I just tell them what her correct number is! She sure has been giving her number out a lot lately…. haha!

Too funny! I texted my cousin to tell her I was pregnant with the twins. Turns out, it was a guy who was very panicked. LOL

  26. says

What a CREEP! They must have been 15-17 years old, and if they are any older than that then they need to get a reality check! Nothing like this has ever happened to me–but when we were on our way to NJ for a wedding last month I got a text from a random number saying “Hey, can your parents give me a ride to the wedding tonight?”. It was very weird because we WERE going to a wedding that night, so the only way I knew it was a wrong number is because the person said “your parents” haha.

  27. says

something totally crazy happened to me a couple of weekends ago – this girl texted me asking me if I was some guy. I texted back “no” so she texts back “who are you” and I wrote…”not that guy”. So she texted “okbyewhatev” I let it go. Then the following weekend I get another text saying, “hey is this (guy’s name again) and I said, “no” so she said, “yeah right.” I let it go. The following night she started up again! At that point I was with a few girl friends and we ended up texting her back with “yeah it is” and then she kept asking us to clarify things, trying to trip us up to which I said, “I told you this wasn’t (guy’s name) like 3 times!!!!

  28. says

Oh my!! I am sitting at work reading this, nearly falling out of my chair laughing! You handled it very well. I can’t imagine that their relationship was good prior to your text message. It is very sad that a text message to a wrong phone number could end it though!

I had a bill collector from Sears call my home phone looking for one of their customers. The first call was within a week of my setting up the phone service. I told them that the phone number was new to me and that I did not know the man they were looking for. I had that same phone number for 12 years and Sears called every 2-3 months asking for that same guy – I ended up cancelling the phone service when it seemed like having a home phone was obsolete (everyone in my house has a cell phone). I wonder if the person who inherited my old number get’s to talk to Sears every 2-3 months? I should call them and ask….

  29. says

Wow crazy! Not with calling someone, but had received weird calls before! Totally got on the other end of a guy calling what he thought was his lover and I had to hang up immediately when I realized what his discussion was consisting of!

I hate wrong calls but it was an honest mistake and I’m sorry it potentially ruined your Easter. Hope you eventually find your friend!

I did something similar. I was going back to my hometown over Christmas and wanted to connect with an old friend I’d found on Facebook recently. She sent me her number over FB and I entered it in my phone wrong. I texted her, “hey, sweetie, we still on for tonight?” and got back a message saying, “i don’t know who this is but i be down.” I figured out that I had the wrong number and just didn’t say anything back. Two days later I got a really angry phone call from a girl yelling at me for “messing with her man.” I didn’t connect the two till she admitted to snooping in his phone and finding my text. I explained the whole thing but she wasn’t buying it. Then the guy started texting and calling and asking “is this Chandra? why you tell my woman bout us, girl?” CRAZY PEOPLE!
