weekend recap and brain dump!

Happy Monday, friends! It’s Spring Break week here. We returned from our doc band appointment in Charlotte a couple of hours ago, and the boys are napping before we head to the zoo this afternoon.

We had a really great weekend, so I wanted to do a little recap for my memory-keeping purposes.

1. Todd and I had a much-needed date night on Friday night. We went to Bonefish Grill and had yummy Bang Bang Shrimp. I had salmon and he had steak. I always tease him that he loves to go to Bonefish just for the Bang Bang Shrimp, but he doesn’t eat fish. We split their amazing Strawberry Shortcake. It’s made with biscuits, y’all. It’s the best!

After dinner, we walked over to the movie theater so I could finally see The Hunger Games. Oh my goodness! It was so good. Everything was exactly how I had pictured it. I read the books back in the summer of 2010, so some of the details were fuzzy, but it came back to my quickly.

I was always Team Peeta when reading the books, but when they cast Peeta and Gale, I knew it would be tough not to stray to Team Gale. He’s a cute fella! But after watching Peeta, I ended up really liking him. I already can’t wait for the second movie. I wish they’d hurry up!

2. My friends and I hosted a sweet baby girl baby shower for our friend Caroline yesterday. My friends at Sweet Birdie’s Nest did the adorable invitations and the really cute paper products. I love the colors of Caroline’s nursery and using those colors for the shower was really fun. It’s a soft aqua, a pale pink and a grass green. We did a dessert shower because Caroline loves sweets! My friends can make some delicious desserts. And my friend Emily ordered the cutest, yummiest petit fours. Β I forgot my camera yesterday, so the only things I have a picture of are the paper poms and the white chocolate pretzel sticks I made the night before the shower. It was so much fun! I love all of these mamas and their babies so much!

3. Did any of y’all watch The Sing Off? Well, Kevin Olusola from the group Pentatonix performed at our church yesterday! He is known as the “beat-boxing cellist.” I highly encourage you to watch some of his You Tube videos. I wanted to pull out my phone yesterday and record him. He is absolutely amazing. One of the most talented individuals I’ve ever seen. And he loves the Lord.

Last night, our church put on a production of The Story. This is an incredible musical event where the songs are written and sung by the characters of the Bible. The music was beautiful and powerful. The vocalists were incredible. The video playing behind them showed the different characters. It was really wonderful. And Kevin Olusola played with the band and beat-boxed!

If you want, you can download all of the music from The Story and hear some of your favorite Christian artists performing the songs. It’s beautiful!

4. We are planning a beach trip with Todd’s parents for the early part of the summer. And we have a very late summer beach trip with my parents planned to go back to the Gulf Coast. (Prettiest beaches in the country!) I’m not usually a fan of the summer, but I’m really excited about it. I love the lazy days and giving my boys a chance to play outside.

5. Thank y’all for the Spring Break ideas. We have some fun days planned and a few fun projects up our sleeve. And I’m just so excited about Easter plans. It’s such a fun time of year!

6. I love a day without makeup! I don’t look great without it. In fact, my eyelashes and eyebrows are white blonde despite the dark roots growing in on top of my head. But I love the way my face feels when I’m not wearing makeup. Especially on a hot day when I can just run and splash water on my face without worrying about messing up my makeup! I just got some fun new skin care stuff from Shasta and I’m loving it!

What are y’all up to? Team Peeta or Team Gale? Any fun summer vacations on the horizon? Do you feel weird not wearing makeup? Care to try it with me this week?

Honestly, I feel a little weird without makeup on. I wear makeup every day for work, and usually put on at least a little foundation and mascara on the weekends. I’ve been trying to at least not wear it if we don’t have plans on the weekend to give my skin a break. Today I’m not wearing eyeliner and every time I look in the mirror it’s abit of a shock to see how small and weird my eyes look!

Totally….especially since I have very rosy checks so I like my tinted moisturizer to tame it. I LOVE new finds…….what did you get from Shasta? Never heard of it. Have fun at the zoo…..what animal is Hudson’s favorite?

  3. says

I was totally team Peeta when reading the books too…. But I think the actor who plays Gale is so cute! I laughed when I read your post. I just don’t think they were able to show katniss’s feelings for Peeta that well in the movie. I did love the movie though. Oh and I’m having a no makeup day and looooooving it!! It’s do freeing!

  4. says

OH MY GOSH! I am so jealous! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pentatonix and Kevin is incredible! How fun!

I’m just getting into the third book in the Hunger Games series…I’m not a huge fan of Peeta…but I like a MAN’s man. I know that sounds weird but in the first book I as so annoyed that Katniss took care of Peeta. We’ll see how the third book goes – I have heard that I will not like Gale after =/ booo lol

When my husband and I went to see The Hunger Games it had been too built up for us. We ended up liking it but being slightly disappointed. I was like Katniss in the books, I couldn’t decide if I liked for Gale or Peeta, but Peeta balances her out and calms her down- which is needed.
I love no make-up days. Having one right now while writing a horrible paper. πŸ™‚

  6. says

Ooooh, I’d love to hear more about your new skincare products! I love going without make up sometimes too. I was team Gale in the book, but Peeta grew on me during the movie.

  7. says

Team Peeta all the way! I just honestly don’t get the whole Team Gale thing. It was always obvious to me that Peeta was the right one. Though I haven’t seen the movie yet. (I always feel the same way about The Bachelor and Bachelorette too – like it’s just obvious.)

I’m the opposite when it comes to make-up. I feel weird wearing it; but, I put it on for work, so I don’t look like I’m dead.

  8. says

I am definitely Team Peeta! I loved him in the books… I actually haven’t read the last one yet. Hopefully we’ll see the movies on DVD. We are SO busy in the coming weeks there will be no chance of a date night. But that’s okay, it’s going to be a good busy and it will give me something to look forward to when things settle down! We’re planning a mid-summer vacation to the Gulf Coast with my family and I cannot wait!! And we’ll be going up to Gatlinburg for a long weekend with my in-laws coming up in about 10 days. Yay for spring and summer fun!!

  9. Megan says

I just saw the movie last night without ever reading the books…and I am now reading them feverishly! I thought the movie was SOO good!! I think Gale is dreamy, but I am definitely Team Peeta! And Hayes looks like his Daddy’s twin in that picture…I always thought he kind of favored you more, but he is definitely his Daddy’s spittin image! πŸ™‚ Happy Spring Break!

  10. Amanda says

Not wearing makeup is such a double-edged sword for me. I don’t really feel all that confident without it but I lOVE to give my skin a break so I do it anyway about once a week. And I guess there is something dark in my spirit b/c no matter how wonderful Peeta was in the books, I was team Gale the whole time…no doubt…no hesitation.

  11. Catie says

Team Peeta for sure. We went and watched it this weekend also. Loved it!! Can’t wait for the next one.

  12. says

I read The Hunger Games release week in 2008 and I’ve read it several times since. I’ve ALWAYS been Team Peeta. I love the boy with the bread! But, I didn’t think the movie captured him well enough. Definitely didn’t capture any real fondness between the two of them, so I felt. I DID feel chemistry between Katniss and Gale in the film. I enjoyed the movie but I felt they left so much out that I was a little disappointed. Not as good as the hype, and I’ve never been a person to compare books to movies. EVER.

I never wear makeup anymore. I hate it. I look dead. But, I’m too tired to put it on now with a toddler.

i’m the opposite. i pretty much never wear make-up. except for work (i’m an actress). when people who know what i do see me with it on, they say “audition today?”…lol! i must say that after a play closes and i’ve grown used to what i look like with it on, it does feel weird to see myself bare faced. but i never miss taking it off every night.

i’m hesitant to share my thoughts on “the hunger games” for fear of being stoned or flamed. but…gulp…here goes. there were things i really liked about the movie (the casting and acting were really good. the costumes and make-up are also sure to get oscar nods), but i also had some problems with it. the pacing felt very uneven to me and i just couldn’t get past watching hand to hand combat…between children. it knew it was going to happen, but it literally gutted me (no pun intended). that said, it sparked tons of conversation – which i think is always valuable. i think it was a commentary on our society (our love of reality television, making stars and tearing them down, competition….). i also heard that it was commentary on the 13 original US colonies (i guess there were 13 districts in the books?…which i have yet to read). i think it was a commentary on colonialism in general…not just in the US. that said, i do want to know what happens. i suspect i’ll read the books rather than waiting until 2013 for the next movie.

oh….and there were big discussions about whether it was an appropriate movie for my 9 year stepdaughter to see, but that was a situation where i had to step ASIDE – as her mom took her…to the midnight showing. sigh.

yikes – i didn’t answer your question…but blathered on…yet again πŸ™‚ um…team gale. based on nothing, except his good look…lol!

oh…and i went erin condren crazy thanks to you! got the planner (yep, this late in the year – they were 40% off, so i figured why wait to get organized), some call me cards and some gift label stickers. you inspire me.

So I probably wear make-up once a week on Sundays! I’m too lazy to mess with it most days and I spend my whole day being stared at by kids who don’t really care what I look like.

I find it hard to choose between Gale & Peeta. I really thought she was going to end up with Gale.

  15. says

i love me some Peeta πŸ™‚ Gale is definitely easy on the eyes, but Peeta is perfect for Katniss I think. i didn’t really feel the connection with Katniss to either of them in the movie though…the books were better at playing out the emotions.
i love no makeup days too, the feeling of washing my face, mositurizing, and then being done is amazing. now, i definitely don’t LOOK amazing. but it feels nice. i also am a HUGE laura mercier tinted moisturizer (illuminating) fan. it’s typically all that i wear in the summer.
    happy monday!

  16. says

I was Team Peeta, and still am a bit, but Gale is so handsome!

No summer vacation plans yet. Where do you go with a 5 month old? We might rent a cabin in Tahoe.

I don’t feel weird without make up, but I definitely like wearing it because it makes me feel pulled together.

I love days where I have nothing to do, so I can wear no makeup, workout clothes, and cross trainer shoes! So comfy! (And I’ll be honest, I sometimes do this even when I know someone might be over. I figure if it bothers them, oh well!) Sounds like you are having a nice week. Thanks for the update!

  18. says

I wish I could get into wearing make up on a daily basis but because my nights tend to be pretty busy between dinner, housework and the gym, I go to be kind of late and sleep as late as I can during the week. I don’t make time for make-up in the mornings before work even though I am sure I could use it!

A few weeks ago I caught a pretty awesome performance of a guy who memorized the entire Gospel according to Mark and then performs it as a one man show. He’s been doing it for about 20 years. I think I was more impressed that someone actually memorized an entire Gospel more than anything else πŸ™‚

I feel the same way that you do about the Hunger Games. The movie did such a great job! I was most definitely Team Peeta throughout the book, but knew it would be tough to avoid being a Team Gale fan. I am anxious for the second movie because Gale’s character will be brought out in a whole new light πŸ™‚

I am lucky enough to attend the Church Max Lucado & Randy Frazze are pastors of and started the Story as a sermon series using The Story book which then took off as another book and the music. It was wonderful to go through the Bible in a year as a Church.

  21. says

TOTALLY Team Gale! Peeta was useless the entire time. He survived by accident. Plus, how cute is the actor who plays Gale (and do we know if he’s single?)!I felt the movie left a lot to be desired, but it was a fun weekend activity anyway.

I LOVE days where I’m able to not wear makeup and I frequently try to go without. Unfortunately, when I have enough blemishes, I give in.

  22. says

I love days where I don’t have to wear make-up, too! Although, with really dark eyes, not wearing eyeliner looks a little (ok, more than a little) scary. With a young daughter, though, I try not to obsess too much about it either way.

Also, we are headed to Hilton Head this summer for the first time! Have y’all vacationed there? I’m super excited – do you have any recs for things to do with a 16 month old there?

  23. says

I am so Team Peeta, but when they cast Gale, I did feel some straying thoughts for sure πŸ˜‰ I loved the movie though!!

I LOVED The Story Tour!!! We went in December before Christmas and it was fabulous. I cannot say enough good things! We went home and immediately downloaded the entire cd! I want to go again this year! I laughed, cried and praised Jesus! Nothing better!

No makeup is the best πŸ˜‰

  24. says

I am halfway through the second Hunger Games and I just cannot decide which team I am! I love Peeta but then its heartbreaking to stray from pretty Gale. Unfortunately, #2 doesn’t come out till Thanksgiving of 2013! So horrible.
