this is my tribute- a chance for $100 to Starbucks

Gift-giving is my love language.

It is how I show the most special people in my life that I love them, appreciate them, and I’m proud of them. I use gifts to show people I love them.

It doesn’t have to be a big, elaborate gift. In fact, something as simple as an invitation to meet for coffee at Starbucks is a treat for me–and I know many mamas agree.

One of the things that meant the most to be after Hayes was born was a sweet friend who stopped by with my favorite Skinny Vanilla Latte and a bag of my favorite candy. She dropped by, gave me a hug, and gave me the little treats she had picked up for me. And just that simple little gift meant the world to me. Her thoughtfulness was written all over it.

My favorite way to pay tribute to my loved ones who are going through a special time (specifically when a new baby is born), is to prepare one of my favorite meals. I package it in disposable containers so they don’t have to worry about returning my dish. Then I’ll add in a salad and fix a dessert I know they’ll love. Comfort food goes a long way!

And then, for a little bonus, I pick up two Starbucks mugs and either Starbucks K-Cups or a bag of Starbucks whole bean coffee. If we can’t meet for a quick coffee date, I want to bring the coffee to her.

When Todd and I were dating, we were both working really late hours. Most nights, he’d work until 8:30, but we still wanted to see each other even though it was past dinner time. So we’d meet at Starbucks and talk until the store closed. We didn’t have a lot of time in those days to spend together, but we made time.

Thoughtfulness and just a little something extra go a long way. I love making cards to send to grandparents and making a favorite cake for my husband’s birthday.

Taking the extra time to do something for these special people always makes their day and shows them how much they are loved.

I can’t wait to bring dinner – and a favorite iced coffee – to a new mom friend! Her little girl was born last week, and I’m just waiting for the dust to settle a little before I stop by for a visit!

I like surprising people — an unexpected note, freshly baked cookies, their favorite candy, even just a text message to say I’m thinking about them. It’s nice to be thought of by someone you love.

And Starbucks doesn’t hurt either. It’s definitely my favorite thing ๐Ÿ™‚

I love to give little things as a thank you or thinking about you gifts. Usually something from the dollar isle from Target that has a funny meaning behind it

What a great giveaway. I would give this to my nanny because she loves taking my son to Starbucks. He has milk and she’ll have a coffee. As for gifts, we have a number of friends having babies soon. I’ve realized that it is the little things that matter…making their favorite dinner or dessert, organizing a playdate for their older child so the parents can rest, etc.

I have a colicky 2 month old and find that time is a precious commodity – it is sometimes all I can do to get our own dinner on the table! However, I love to send cards to friends and family with my heartfelt and sincere sentiments or words of encouragement…words are my love language, I think. Thanks so much for the opportunity to win this gc to Starbucks!

Gift-giving is my love-language as well – I just love to give people things that they are wanting or needing, and I love picking up little treasures for people and surprising them! I also send cards when people I love achieve or accomplish something – I think everyone loves getting real mail, and it’s so easy to drop a card in the mail!

I love to bake so I always bake something special for my friends and family when they are going through hard times, are celebrating something, or just need a encouragement. I usually think about their favorite types of desserts (i.e. chocolate or fruit) and then bake them something creative and take it to them. I think cards/hand written notes are a wonderful way to pay tribute to somebody too. Getting mail can be a great pick-me-up.

  13. Shannon says

I love to leave an unexpected note or card for someone – especially if they are feeling down and need a pick me up. My husband is a seminary student and we currently live in a small apartment. With that being said, we still love to use our small space as a way to invite friends and family into our home and share a meal with them. There is something so special and simple about sitting around a table together, laughing, eating and investing time into others lives. There are so many opportunities to encourage and uplift others during such an intimate time! Our home might be small but we love using it to love on others with!

  20. says

My boyfriend and I give eachother small ‘I love you presents’ all the time. It could be a small bag of gummy bears or a new pen, but I think gift giving is our love language too ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Nicole says

I always try to give a gift the other person will like. Sometimes, when I am simply out of ideas, I get them a gift card to a store that they are sure to go to or one they often frequent. But the best is always a care package or basket or pretty bag filled with items picked up just for them.

Erin, THANK YOU for a generous giveaway!

  34. Kelly H says

To me its the little thoughtful things that are the most special. I love stopping by with starbucks and a their favorite candy bar (or a diet coke for my non coffee drinking family members) after a particularly rough work day. If its a big occassion like a birth, I try to think of something that would be helpful – dinner, babysitting a sibling, etc. For my sister when she had my niece, my mom was there helping and I knew she was laid up in bed for a while so she got a love package with new nail polish, gossip magazines, new jammies, and her favorite movie. Making it personal and individual (not expensive) is the way I like to go! Thanks for this opportunity!

  35. says

I try to either send a note (if it’s something I’ve seen someone do that was noteworthy, something I’ve really appreciated, etc) or prepare a meal (for parents with a new baby). I’m less comfortable preparing a meal, but I know how much I appreciated it when folks brought us meals!

  36. Mrs.M says

I try to do something special that I know that person will appreciate. It might be offering my help at work, bringing my husband a Starbucks coffee when he is stuck at work all day, or even sending a handwritten note.

I love sending hand-written cards to my friends and family in other cities and sometimes adding a little Starbucks card as a treat!

  40. says

I love doing things that are simple, personal, and maybe unexpected. A handwritten note with their favorite treat just put on the hood of their car so when they come out from work they are surprised….or watching my friend’s kids so they can celebrate an accomplishment by having dinner with their husband.

  41. Sara Lang says

I’m definitely a gift giver as well. Currently, I’m living in a city far away from many of my best friends. Several of them have gotten engaged recently, and since I can’t be there to celebrate with them right now, I send along a bottle of wine and wine glasses so I can help toast their engagement.

  42. Laura N says

I’m also a gift giver, even if it’s just a little note and a piece of candy I think it can go a long way to brighten someone’s day!

  43. Jennifer says

I love to make personalized cards on Hallmark’s website! I’m a card giver from way back, but I just love to see people’s faces when they get a card with a special picture or their name on the front! They always ask – how did you do that??? My Secret! ;o)

  44. Mumagain says

I do the same as you when good friends welcome babies – i prepare a couple wholesome meals and add in some snacks and beverages to the care package too…just so that they don’t have to go to the grocery store for a few days! I love that your friend dropped by with a latte – a lovely gesture. I will have to try that!

  45. laura says

I love love love sending “real” letters and cards in the mail. Snail mail is so much better than an email and such a fun surprise ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d love to win.. starbucks is my happy place!

  46. says

Starbucks is actually a special place to me, because my fiance and I have spent quite a bit of time there over the years that we’ve been together, just meeting up for a quick coffee break during the workday or enjoying each other’s company and sipping on iced coffees for a while in the evening at our local Starbucks. In fact, we often surprise each other with a treat, such as Starbucks, when one of us has had a busy, stressful, or even exciting day. Its just our thing.

  47. CJ says

My favorite thing to do is to send cards in the mail on pretty stationary. I love getting real mail and hopes other people enjoy it as much as I do

  48. says

I always prepare a full meal from entree to dessert and put it in disposable containers. The last thing that I want to do is give someone more work! I’m also a pretty big fan of gifting gift cards though and do it all the time. I love making them more special by adding a personal touch like a card to a restaurant with a note that says “A free night of babysitting” to accompany the card.

  49. Jessica says

I love to pay tribute by inviting people over for a home cooked meal. Most of my friends are either single and don’t cook often or young moms, who often need a break. I love to pull out the china and serve up an awesome meal!

  54. Carrie S says

I’m in grad school, so picking up coffee for someone is one of my favorite ways to show them how much I care. ๐Ÿ™‚

  55. says

Growing up, my family always printed signs that were hung on the mantle and wrote small notes to be placed strategically around the house (on your toothbrush, near the coffee maker, on the television remote). It has been our way of making a small gesture to celebrate big milestones, small feats, or other special occasions. In fact, there is currently a sign hanging on the mantle as I type this! ๐Ÿ™‚

  56. Rebecca Scott says

    I love writing a note – actual pen and paper snail mail kind of note = ) If they are not well/just had a baby/etc; I am with you on the meal but with an added touch – dessert that they like, coffee, etc;

  60. Candice says

I love to send “just because” greeting cards. Because how often does anyone receive a card that isn’t for Christmas or a birthday? It’s nice to let people know I’m thinking of them and everyone loves to get mail!

  61. courtney b says

we get together and plan a nice big dinner with family and friends on sundays and drink lots of wine!:) so fun!

and whoever did the good deed that week gets to choose what we eat!

  62. says

I always get the hubs something little when he accomplishes something or gets a promotion, 1 time I got him a new Vineyard Vines bow tie, this last time since he got a job with a car company I went out and bought all the major car magazines that we don’t already get and tied a bow around them!

  63. says

I also love giving tangible gifts, but since having a baby and quitting my job last year, money is a little tight! So these days I am all about handwritten notes. I know how much thoughtful notes mean to me, so I hope those receiving them from me feel the same way!

  64. says

I totally agree on paying tribute and recognizing people with food – I wish they had a love language for that! I’ll toast to Starbucks for the giveaway; thanks for hosting!

  65. Katie Beth says

Before I moved half-way across the country, I loved to drop off packages of simple sweet gifts to friends and family experiencing life changes (be it baked goods, casseroles, or a special little SBux giftcard). Now that most of my friends and family are too far away to deliver a home cooked dinner, I have been trying to send more cards during holidays and events (like Thanksgiving, Easter, birth of child, death of parent). I suppose including a gift card inside would be a great addition. I also want to send some brownies to a friend who is soon to have her second child, but I haven’t attempted to ship/mail baked goods just yet.

  66. says

I pay tribute to my husband by leaving him notes around the house or in his lunch to let him know how much I appreciate him and love him! He would be equally as thrilled as I to win a Starbucks gift card!

I love having “mini parties” for people with a theme- a Mexican fiesta or an Italian get together. It’s fun for me and I think it makes my friends and husband feel special to be honored that way.

  72. Megan Soong says

Hey girl! I LOVE the written word! I am a huge words of affirmation person so when someone takes the time to write me a card letting me know how much the love, appreciate, or how they are thankful for me, I just eat it up! I tend to do the same for others since I know how it makes me feel:)
Oh the damage you and I could do with $100 to Starbucks while the kids are in pre-school:)

I love Starbucks, and if I win the gift card, then each time I use it I will buy a drink for the person behind me in line.

I’m a big card sender. I like to send cards with a note to my friends just because. I think that most of us love getting a hand written note since we’re all so wrapped up in email and texting.

Oh my word, how I would love this giftcard…When someone I love does something that I want to celebrate, I buy them a book. A journal, a fiction book that I feel like just sums up their experience, an educational book..any book will do. As a book lover, this is the best gift I can give them.

  88. Patty says

I write a poem and share it out loud at a birthday, retirement, anniversary, or any event. The poem is funny, touching and it always rhymes. Sounds challenging, but it’s actuall really fun. I always give the person a copy of the poem after I read it! Sometimes they even ask me to email it to them so they have an e-copy!

  94. Cali says

As a teacher I see a lot of students who don’t get any type of special attention for their birthdays. On the first day of school I always ask the students to write down their favorite birthday treat. On their birthday I write a special note about them and leave their treat on the their desk. It’s not a whole lot but it’s something they look forward to and enjoy!

  109. Amanda says

I bake as a way of showing my love, appreciation, support, etc. I keep track of my friends’ favorites so I can bake their favorite things. 110. says

I love to give gifts as well! I love to do something special for each person – for my husband, it might be a new bottle of red wine to try together. For a friend, a Starbucks date or something for their home! ๐Ÿ™‚

Telling them that I love them is how I honor someone in my life. Such as my husband and children.
Treating them to Starucks is always nice, too!

I love cards sending cards with a sweet note when someone has accomplished something great! Sometimes i throw in a little treat – giftcards, desserts, or something else I know they will love!

  114. Lesley says

I love to send friends/family hand written cards in the mail. These days it’s so easy to send someone an e-mail, text, facebook message…and the list goes on. But to know someone took the time to write down their thoughts and feelings in a card and send it to me means so much. I enjoy doing it for others.

  115. says

It depends – sometimes I like to write a note, make/bring over/go out for a meal, make time for pampering or get a little gift.
    *Super fun giveaway! Thank you!!

  116. Christy says

I have a handful of GREAT friends who I know so well. Each are such unique individuals and I know all of their favorite goodies. I tend to put together a little bit of their favorites into a care package. I’m also a photographer and take tons of pics of their kids…so I’ll go in and edit one of my favorites and frame it and give that as a gift — they do seem to be the favorite! ๐Ÿ™‚

  117. Erica Best says

I pay tribute to my mother and my dad who past some years back by showing them i love them and spending time with them best i could.

I try to honor those close to me by doing little things each day to make their lives a little easier and happier. I will do the dishes for my roommates, cook dinner for a friend, pick up the tab, compliment them, any little thing that will subtly make their day better. I hope that by doing this frequently, their overall happiness will increase more than if they were to get a big gift one time.

  119. Annette D says

I recognize my friends and family’s achievements by buying them and gift and treating them to a special dinner.

  120. cw says

I honor and celebrate my families accomplishments by using the red plate that says “you are special today”. I serve meals to that person on the plate and we write on the bottom what we are celebrating and the date so we can look book.

  121. says

I like to give little gifts or bake treats or mail a note. Just a little something so my loved one knows I am thinking of them.
*thank you for the giveaway! I <3 SBUX!!

  122. says

My tribute is to make sure that my daughter knows her great-grandparents as well as family that she doesn’t see very often. I tell stories and show pictures all of the time. She should know where she is from.

  123. says

I love to have people over for dinner or take them a dinner. I also like to find someone’s favorite candy or snack and surprise them with it! What a great giveaway!!

  125. Katy P says

I love to send handwritten notes and find that people love to receive them–a lost art! Thanks for hosting a great giveaway!

  126. says

Honestly, I do it through blogging. My parents, inlaws, and other relatives read my blog, and I talk a lot about our family (good things!).

  127. Jessica F says

Whenever someone I love has done something great, I like to make them something homemade… homemade baked goods or a homemade card!

  128. Elena says

I pay tribute to my family by taking my husband and kids on a date night out or by cooking their favorite meals

  129. says

Call me old-fashioned but I love to send cards and/or flowers to friends for accomplishments and achievements. For instance, a friend recently got a new job and I sent her flowers on her first day to celebrate. With so much emphasis on electronic communication, it has become a refreshing suprise to receive a handwritten letter or a bouquet of flowers.

  130. says

I love giving cards for occasions like that, but also small little gifts related to the goal or accomplishment. If it’s a new job, then a gift card to a store to get some fun work clothes, or a starbucks card to get coffee on their way to work.

  131. Katie M says

My family is big on giving cards. We love giving each other cards for even the smallest celebrations. It is so nice to be remembered or recognized and who doesn’t love getting mail that isn’t bills? I also love baking for people so that is another way to show I care. I get my baking fix but then I get to give it away!

  132. Anne says

I like sending baked goods to friends and family members who live far away. I try to do this for major holidays and birthdays, but also random “just because” days to remind the people near and dear to me how special and loved they are!

  133. says

I love gift giving– my mom calls the little gifts “little happies”. Since Drew’s love language is words of affirmation, I will generally write letters to him if he’s achieved something or if I want to say “I love you”.

  134. Jennifer says

My love language is to mail a card or leave a little note or send a text. My dad used to leave me sweet little notes before school and I think I’m like him

  135. Jessica says

Our church group of girls take meals to our circle when they have babies and I always take some super awesome dessert….everybody enjoys a good chocolate trifle! Love this sweet giveaway

  136. Sarah says

I definitely love to cook and bake for those I want to honor, thank, or show that I am thinking about them. I also love to include handwritten notes and anything that will help to make life a little easier for them.

love this! i’m a big gift-giver too, and the more thoughtful, the better ๐Ÿ™‚ i love putting together gift baskets that apply to the special occasion (mixing bowls filled with utencils for a new home, or a basket filled with diapers, wipes, and bottles for a new mom.) thanks for the giveaway erin! ๐Ÿ™‚

  139. says

Maybe I show my gratitude by finding free time to spend with people I love. From time to time, I invite them for dinner, we go to a coffee shop or we just go for a walk. it’s simple, no matter how busy schedule you have, you should find some time for people you care about. Nothing can’t replace that beautiful moments spent with your friends or family.

  140. Brittany Wertz says

I show my gratitude by words of affirmation. I make it a point every day to tell those I love how much I care about them and what I love about them ๐Ÿ™‚

Such a great giveaway! I start everyday off with a Starbucks coffee. I love it…my wallet…not so much.

    Thanks, Erin!

  142. Carla says

I like to honor those I love by doing little things. I like to send a note in the mail, invite them out for a coffee or a glass of wine, drop off a treat at their house, or one of the best things I think I can do…I just listen. Really listen.

  143. meredith says

I honor the special people in my life when they achieved something by giving them a big hug and kudos โ€“ and sometimes a special treat!

  144. kayla king says

I love to bring them their favorite ice cream, or take them out to lunch or coffee. Thanks for doing this giveaway!

  145. says

I am a HUGE card person. I send ecards for everything and paper cards for special things or to people that don’t have email! Example: my hubby just got a new job after dealing with being told he was going to be laid off at the end of April. The job search was harsh and unfair (was looking for a transfer within the same company) and he worked SO hard and was on top of everything like a mad man! I sent him a ecard telling him how much I appreciate him and how proud of him I am, got him a paper card too, and posted stuff on his Facebook wall as well — All singing his praises! LOL That’s how I roll! LOL

  146. says

This is wonderful. I love hearing others’ ‘love languages’. Mine is words of affirmation, so that’s how I speak love too, I am encouraging with my words. But I also love food, love to cook and love to cook food for people. So blessing others with a home-cooked meal is a great way that I can pay tribute to them. Your idea of adding coffee is perfect!

  147. kay swederski says

To pay tribute to others I like to do something nice for them – depending on what they like, buy a present, give them a bottle of wine, make a nice dessert for them. Just depends on who it is.

  148. ANGEL JACKLYN says

I LEAVE LITTLE NOTES AS GESTURES. I’VE ALWAYS DONE THAT. IT FEELS GOOD TO BE RECOGNIZED & IF I NEEDED THE RECOGNITION, I’D LOVE TO RECEIVE A NOTE- SO I GUESS THAT’S WHY I DO IT =)

  149. Kerry says

I do – I like to find the perfect card for the occasion. And some sort of chocolate is always good too!

  150. Joyce Harrell says

I will definitely always send a card with a note when someone has accomplished a goal or has a special day.

  151. JODI HARRINGTON says

I love to send out funny/sarcastic cards for special occasions – never anything serious. I love to get a good reaction.

  152. Debra S says

Oh yes, a simple card for different things… with little things in them, sometimes money, sometimes the special candy I know a kids loves, or jewelry!

Sometimes we do simple outings- something the celebrated person loves to do!

  153. Sarah L says

Simply remembering to say thanks to everyone who touches my life is a good way to live.
    An attitude of gratitude.
    Thanks for the contest.

  154. says

My love language is affirmation, but I love to give and receive gifts too! Great ideas for bringing a meal plus Starbucks to a friend that just had a baby. I was seriously blown away by the generosity from the girls in my MOPS group after having Brynley.

  155. ACMommy3 says

I enjoy celebrating friends and family’s accomplishments with surprise home-baked goodies or home-made dinners….and spontanous flowers are also fun. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s great to pay tribute and show appreciation on “ordinary” days when you least expect something. ๐Ÿ˜€

  156. Mary A says

I too give gifts to show my love. I like to give gifts for no special reason. I like Starbucks for mochas but my dd loves it even more so if I win I will give this to her!

  157. Krys R says

I use Starbucks as a tribute to myself! It’s a reward after a hard workout, a reward after a morning spent writing, pretty much any time I’ve accomplished something I feel proud of! ๐Ÿ™‚

  158. Jammie says

We give a lot of praise, and I also love to give little notes, so they know I am thinking about them. sweepmorey at gmail dot com

  159. Mari says

We go out for ice cream or laser tag(if it involves children), my dh and I go out to dinner or coffee.

  160. christina says

I like to make things for people, like baking them cookies. If someone is too far away, I’ll still give them a call so they know I’m thinking about them!

  161. Betty C says

I like to make quilts for special people. A simple train quilt for the son of a friend, a retro neon colored pieced quilt for a granddaughter graduating from high school or a quilt with a fish motif for the guy who thinks he’s a world class fisherman. Each one was made for the special interest of the person and that makes all the difference.
