in the air there's a feeling of Christmas

Christmas only comes once a year, so I like to use as many Christmas song lyrics for titles to my posts as possible during this time of the year. Although, Christmas does seem to come faster every year as we get older, and older, and older…

I’m going to attempt to write this post in a way that seems positive and upbeat, despite how tired and run down I feel today.

In true week-before-Christmas fashion, Hudson is sick. It’s such a horrible coincidence, but I guess we can be thankful that he didn’t have to miss any school. He was complaining about his ear on Saturday morning, so while Hayes napped, Hudson sat on my lap sipping his Ovaltine and watching How The Grinch Stole Christmas. TC had gone to breakfast with the guys from our Sunday school class. When TC came home, he was giving Hudson some medicine. I guess Hudson got choked or something because, without warning, he lost his breakfast (and Ovaltine) all over our white sofa and me. Poor guy. Poor mama.

He was in tears and I was nearly in tears. TC kept saying, “don’t cry, either of you.” We all got baths. The couch got cleaned. Hudson took an epic nap that day. Thankfully, after you get tubes, ear infections aren’t nearly as bad as they were before tubes. We have drops on hand to nip those ear infections in the bud quickly. So we did.

But now that Hudson is sick, we’re all kind of sick. TC didn’t sleep a wink last night, I’ve got an awful sore throat that seems to be getting worse with each cup of coffee I drink. But I can’t seem to lay off the coffee. There’s still so much to be done despite the sickness.

Christmas is days away and my Christmas cards are still sitting in the box waiting to be addressed. I had to order more this year. I looked at my list and the amount I ordered and it wasn’t even close. I usually end up with about 25 extra cards and it always seems wasteful, so I cut back this year. I guess I made a bunch of new friends this year, so yay for that! Right?

Maybe I’ll make good use of my time tonight and watch The Family Stone while I address Christmas cards. TC should be willing to do it, but he uses “poor handwriting” as his excuse to not have to address them. Don’t lawyers have really strong hands after taking the bar exam? (That was six or seven years ago, so maybe he’s not as conditioned anymore.)

Sweet Hayes is the only one of us who hasn’t seemed at all sick, thank goodness. He is trying so hard to crawl and just smiles when he pushes up to all fours. He can crawl backwards, but he just can’t figure out how to move forward. He gets around, though. He does a mixture of army crawl and rolling to get where he needs to go. He’s such a happy guy.

(sorry for the blurry iPhone picture)

I got a little video of him trying to crawl last week.

I don’t think I mentioned this on the blog, but we drove to South Louisiana last weekend. (I guess a week of Christmas-related posts kept me from doing a lot of catching up.) It was a 14-ish hour drive (including all of our stops to feed the boys and change diapers). When we got home on Sunday night it was about 10:30 p.m. The boys were both in gross clothes, so I stripped them down to a clean diaper and just let them play before putting them down for bed.

Hayes and Hudson were seriously wired and I got this hilarious video of them. It’s long, but they are both just so funny to me. Hayes cracks himself up and Hudson takes this “big brother” thing pretty seriously, it seems. Hayes is also pretty loud, so turn down the volume if you watch the video.

Sorry for the big blog ramble, but it was fun to do a little catching up! I hope you’re all settling down and getting ready for a fun week with family and celebrations.

Those are both so cute! I love that he’s up and rocking! Coen is just doing this army crawl thing, but it’s still really cute. I’ll have to upload it!

And the screaming! Yes… Coen does that same thing but for not quite as long! Crazy! What energy! Poor Hudson… 🙂

I hope everybody starts feeling better real soon! I laughed when you mentioned Todd’s handwriting, b/c my husband just took the Bar exam this past summer (which he wrote) but most people type now. I asked him before he took it, if he was sure he wanted to write it since his handwriting was so hard to read. He did great on the Bar and got a job so Yay for that, but I still can’t read his handwriting and we’ve been married 3 1/2 years! The video of the boys is so cute- my little boy, Foster, is so loud too so I had to see if it was similar and it is! Boys are so much fun! Merry Christmas!

Hope you are feeling better! I started to keep a spreadsheet of addresses for Christmas cards. I go over the list a few days before I purchase them then know a good number to get plus a few extras. I either print the addresses off on labels or directly onto the envelopes. It saves a lot of time plus my husband who also uses the poor handwriting excuse likes to help with them. Using clear labels and a decorative font really makes the cards pretty too! The I save time for writing personal notes in the cards as I wish!

Hope you all feel better soon. My husband uses his handwriting as an excuse to get out of Christmas cards and thank you notes. Between getting married, having a baby and our huge Christmas list, he owes me big time!

What a great post. Your boys are darling. I hope you all start feeling better soon. As for Christmas cards, I need to try the attorney excuse on my husband…but if I did, no cards would get sent. He would never address them all:) Oh well. Merry Christmas!!!

Erin, forget the Christmas cards this year! People will miss the picture, but really are they important in the whole scheme? Drink some warm wine, instead of coffee and take a nap with the boys. Everyone will feel better afterward!

Is getting sick the week before Christmas a common kid thing that I should know about? Zoe got crazy sick this last weekend, and we think some/most of it could be related to food allergies. I’ve spent the better part of the last 48 hours trying to wrap my head around elimination diets, dairy/lactose free foods, what the heck a dairy allergy could mean to our lives. If this is an annual thing, then I might start boycotting Christmas! Totally kidding, mostly. 😉 I hope you and your boys start feeling better before the big day…. and, if things get too piled up, just remember… those cards can become “New Years” cards if need be.

Try to rest and relax as much as possible. I hope that you all start feeling better very soon. Josiah was sick this past week as well. That video of Hayes crawling is so sweet. Your boys are so precious.. God bless!

If you feel like you might like to let a ball drop, print Christmas Card address labels in a pretty font. You just run a mail merge from your address list (I’m presuming you have it in excel). Hand addressed cards is something I decided to let go this year, because I just do what I can : )

I hope everyone gets better soon. I know what you mean about Christmas sneaking up on you. I’m having a hard time gettings my stuff together and I only have 1 baby!

Hope everyone is feeling much better after reading post! You’re not alone, I just finally addressed the last of my cards last night! I had also ran out of cards this year. I was the same as you, I had cut back after having so many left over from last year. I was happy to have made new friends this year as well, makes us all feel loved! But I felt overwhelmed not being ‘with it’ and having cards to quickly turn around and mail. J and I had to make a Walgreens run and pick out some cute cards to send to those new buddies of ours!
Cute video of the boys! Makes me miss being younger & having innocent fun with my brother!

I just had to comment, even though I usually don’t, because our boys were born on the exact same day (May 5th) and they’re both doing the exact same thing trying to learn how to crawl. When I watched that video of Hayes I seriously laughed because I could have been watching a video of my son they are so similar. Love your blog, hope you guys have a great Christmas! -Julie
