Thanksgiving Day was truly wonderful in our family, and I feel so fortunate and grateful to have been able to spend it with so many people I love.
When Santa Claus made his way into Herald Square on 34th Street during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade yesterday morning, the Christmas season was officially here!
The reason I have already finished all of my shopping is because I want to be able to make the most of every single day this month with my family. I want fewer obligations and more time for fun and memories!
Many of you are looking for new traditions with your young family. A young marriage, a new baby or just an aspiration to do more things together as a family this holiday season, you may be looking for some options for fun family traditions that you and your family can observe.
Nina and I have partnered, once again, with talented designer Kelly Ashworth, to bring you our list of ideas for Christmas family traditions.
One of my favorite Christmas traditions has always been that my family eats gumbo on Christmas Eve when we get home from the Christmas Eve church service. I love that it’s our “signature” dish for Christmas Eve and it’s untraditional, while being our family’s tradition.
If you’re looking for fun new traditions, I hope that our list of 25 traditions to adopt into your family inspires you!

great list!!! we have many little traditions that I look forward to each year – but one that is an absolute fav is that on the 23rd, we go out for Chinese food! it started before the kids, because we wanted something that wasn’t holiday related, and now it is just so convenient – eat then come home and finish up last minute cleaning, pressing the clothes for church, etc. makes it so easy and we all enjoy it to no end!
*and I have to be the curmudgeon and point out it is “Herald” square, not Harold. LOL!!!!
ADORABLE. Love, love, LOVE the list!!!! You are going to have such a fun December!!!
We always have a shrimp boil on Christmas Eve. This year I have to be tested for a shellfish allergy so we’re still waiting to see if that’s a go (I’ll be so disappointed if I’m allergic). I love Christmas and all the traditions that go with it. And kids make it 1000 times as much fun.
Erin, random question, i know, but do you know what font was used for ‘sample’? I’ve been looking for it and can’t find it. Thanks, and yay for the Christmas Season! Tell the boys our boys say hey!
Erin, I have just published a post on traditions and I always love learning of new Christmas traditions to share with family members, thanks so much for posting this; I love it! BTW- Do you know of any easy holiday crafts that kids could participate in? I have been searching for some and have came up short.
-Kelly
Love this list:) I can’t wait to start our Christmas decorating this weekend. I have also finished all my Christmas shopping which is a small miracle considering I’m usually running around on Christmas Eve finishing up my last bit of shopping. I really want to be able to enjoy Britton’s 1st Christmas this year.
Love these ideas! We already do some but one can never have enough tradition 🙂
Great list! I’ve downloaded and will be using it as we start new traditions while the boys are young. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for a great list. This is our first Christmas with children and we are trying to think up some new traditions — this is a great inspiration!
Hey-Claudia found the font name while we were waiting for Santa! It’s Sketch Block-yay! So good to see you guys! Come over on Sunday!!!!!
