Ferris Bueller you're my hero… {really just a brain and picture dump}

I couldn’t think of a great title for this ordinary brain dump post (with a picture dump included) so I titled it the first movie quote that came to my mind. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Isn’t that movie on everyone’s “favorite movies of all time” list?

  • I have another movie list called “The Guaranteed to Make Me Cry Movie List.” The movies on that list include Steel Magnolias, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Beaches, Father of the Bride (part 1 and part 2) and Stepmom. There are others, I’m sure. Oh yeah. Up Close and Personal! Totally a tear-jerker.
  • Do you ever smell perfume on someone in passing and it reminds you of something, someone or somewhere. I always smell this perfume that reminds me of my kindergarten teacher. I always want to stop who ever is wearing it and ask them the name of the perfume. Not that I’d go by a bottle and spray it on my pillow or anything, but I’m just always so curious. It’s amazing the memories that come back just from your sense of smell.
  • I had a couple of cute Hayes pictures on my iPhone that I wanted to share. I just can’t help it. His sweet smile melts my heart. And what’s cuter than a baby in a beach hat?

  • I had a rough day yesterday. Hayes cried a whole lot. He’s not a crier, so I was just confused and couldn’t figure out what to do for him. He napped when he was supposed to and ate when he was supposed to, but when he was awake, he wasn’t happy. I’m assuming it’s teething because of all the drooling, but I don’t feel a little tooth yet. Poor guy.
  • The day was even more tough because I had the headache from you know where. I unintentionally gave up Diet Coke yesterday. I didn’t realize I was giving it up until it dawned on me that I had a horrible headache and hadn’t yet consumed a Diet Coke. The crying amplified the headache.
  • Our dog, Boudreaux, needs to be medicated for anxiety. My friend suggested the Thunder Shirt. Maybe we’ll try that! He has Acral Lick Granuloma and it’s just so sad. I hate for him to be on anti-depressants because they do change his personality, but I prefer that to watching him hurt himself. We have been dealing with this since he was a puppy. We’ve changed his diet and are now on a holistic, very pricey dog food. But it all comes down to a psychological disorder, not allergies or skin issues. Hopefully we can help him manage it and help him be comfortable, even if he is a little sluggish.
  • Look at funny little Hayes in his little hideaway at the beach last week. He just had it made in the shade, y’all. He had his own little private tent and little fan. Lucky kiddo.

  • Hudson’s Sunday school teachers were telling me how smart they thought he was because he was talking about “stegasauruses” and “raptors” and “rhinoceroses” in Sunday school. I thanked them. But I know the truth. He watches too much Team Umizoomi and they had an episode about dinosaurs. I’ll just let people continue to think that my kiddo is brilliant without the help of terrible Nickelodeon cartoons!

  • Can y’all believe that Friends is on Nick at Night? How is that possible? How old does that make you feel?

Hayes is absolutely precious! Love that sweet little face. 🙂 I actually know a friend that used the thunder shirt on their dog, and it worked really well for “chilling” him out. I use something that has a similar concept for my children with Autism (I am a pediatric OT), and the deep pressure and proprioceptive input is very calming for them. It is worth a try. I hate having to medicate them. So sad because their personality changes. We had a golden with seizures growing up, and she was a different, but seizure free, puppy on meds.

Those pictures of Hayes are precious! What kind of beach tent was that? I hated the one I bought and am looking for a new one!
Sorry about your doggy! That is rough! I have thunder shirts for both my pups and they do not cure the anxiety but they do bring it down about 8 notches!! Isn’t it weird that dogs can be anxious?!

  3. says

    1. I love Hayes’ little pair of baby Sperry’s! So cute!!
    2. I am also totally addicted to diet coke. I am afraid to quit cold turkey because of the horrible caffeine headaches I get!
    3. I just realized this week that Friends was on Nick at Night! That makes me feel SO old. Remember when it was shows like Mary Tyler Moore and I Love Lucy on at night?!

  4. says

I saw that Friends was on Nick at Night last week and I immediately thought “Wow, I am SOOO old!” I used to LOVE watching the ‘old’ shows on Nick at Night when I was in junior high and high school! Hayes is too cute!

  5. says

I could never give up diet coke– especially because there are some meals that you just HAVE to have a diet coke with (i.e.- mexican food) I guess I could just have a margarita instead?

Hayes is so adorable. We really need to get together sometime and meet and let the babes meet!

Sorry about the crying. Emmeline has been like that on and off lately too. She has been feeling the effects of teething for a while now, which I guess they can even months before a tooth comes through. Like you said though, she still eats and sleeps like a champ so we should be thankful for that! I just hate feeling like I have to do a song and dance while she’s awake to make her happy! (“Come ON, Emmy, you LOVE your playmat… just play dangit!)

Can you tell I’ve drank 2 cups of coffee this morning? Sorry for MY brain dump. xo

I think yesterday was a hard day for a lot of people! Not sure why. But that pic of Hayes grabbing his feet is pretty darn cute helped start this day off a little better.
I think there are worse shows than Team Umizoomi. No big deal. Hope Hayes is happier today.

  7. says

I hope your headache is gone!!! Hayes has super cute shoes! Our dog, Wilma, has bad anxiety in the car and we have tried everything- a prescription from the vet, Benadryl, Rescue Remedy, etc. Last spring we purchased a Thunder Shirt and tried that, but unfortunately it didn’t work. We had to take it back. 🙁 But, I hope it works for Boudreaux! I know the feeling of feeling so bad for your dog, but there is nothing you can do to help…or, you haven’t figured it out yet.

  8. says

OK, lots to say about this dump. 1 – The Notebook gets me every single time! 2- I had that same experience with smell yesterday. Someone was wearing Bath & Body Works Lotion I wore in college and it took me way back! 3 – Tell me what Boudreaux is doing. I am always wondering if Lucy needs to be on something. She can’t sit still and just chill. I kept thinking it would get better as she gets older and it’s getting a little better, but not a whole lot. 4 – Yes – Friends on Nick at Nite is totally throwing me for a loop! 😉 Hope you have a better day today and remember your Diet Coke! It’s a mom’s best friend!

  9. VKS says

Give the Thunder Shirt a shot. For about $40 if it works it’s totally worth it. We have had great success using it with our dog, though she is just gets nervous and anxious. It really seems to relax her and help her feel better.

  10. says

Our golden also has very bad anxiety issues! My mother in law recently got the Thunder Shirt for him and I did a blost post about it a few weeks ago. It does seem to work or at least it distracts him for a few minutes, since he seems to be trying to figure out what the heck his parents have done to him, ha! If only dogs could talk! 🙂

  11. says

I am the SAME way about perfume/cologne. When Drew was deployed, I would sleep with a shirt that was sprayed with his cologne (Cool Water at the time I believe). To this day smelling that cologne almost makes me cry from all of the emotions of that deployment. Glad to know I’m not the only one! And I feel you on the teething stuff… my Connor is normally a laid back, non-cryer, but teething has made him Dr. Jekel and Mr. Hyde… it’s AWEFUL! Hope he breaks those teeth soon!

  12. says

I am so sorry about your rough day yesterday. I hope your headache is better and that there will be less crying today! I think Hayes is looking more and more like you!

Ferris Bueller was filmed at my high school…..John Hughes was an alumnus, so many of his films were shot in/near my hometown. it’s fun to bring out-of-town guests past my old high school to point out FB movie shots!!

Friends is on Nick at Night?!?! Now I DO feel old. How did that happen?

  14. says

Diet Coke makes my day…every day! And I hate it when you ‘unintentionally’ give something up! I love the how you dress your little guys. So adorable!

I luv luv luv that Friends is on Nick at Night! Although it makes me feel old I do enjoy the fashion recap of the 90’s! SO AWESOME 🙂

  15. says

I totally get the smelling things and it bringing back memories. I love the smell of gasoline because it reminds me of my Papa and when he would work on lawn mowers. So for most people it stinks, but for me it brings back wonderful memories.

  16. says

Smells definitely trigger memories for me too. There’s this one smell that reminds me of my babysitter’s house at Christmastime. Talk about specific! I even get the visual of how she decorated the room we always played in. At least it’s a pleasant memory!

  17. says

#1. Your babies are adorable, as always!
#2. I flew to Texas and back two weeks ago on JetBlue and the only thing that held me together was the fact that Nick-at-Night was airing a Friends marathon! It was Rachel’s night, which left me as the crazy passenger giggling to myself at 10:30pm. However, I didn’t put two and two together until you pointed out that we are indeed OLD. I realize this now because Happy Days and Cheers were on N@N when I was growing up and back then I thought they were OLD. Ay yi yi… 🙂

  18. says

It is crazy how smell brings you back. This morning on the way to my car the smell of the morning air reminded me of having elementary school Phys Ed with dew still on the grass… That was 20 years ago!! Hayes is just precious. I’m sure you just eat those cheeks up daily!!

  19. Shannon says

It’s so funny that you said that about FRIENDS, I thought the exact same thing! I felt so old when i realized what channel I was watching!

  20. Angela says

Does Boudreaux get enough exercise? The reason why I ask is because our dog Zeus gets anxiety attacks every now and then when we leave him alone at home, but he’s less likely to have them when he’s had enough exercise and is tired. Have you considered doggie daycare? You can take him there a couple of days a week. He will get some exercise, he will be distracted playing with the other dogs and hopefully he will be less likely to hurt himself. Good luck!

  21. says

they say smell is the sense most strongly linked to your memories. i know just what you mean about smelling former teachers out and about! “what’s that you’re wearing? do you know mrs wise, she taught math?”

  22. says

Ugh! Teething! (can I say ugh! again?) We are cutting new teeth every week!
One thing that does help us and i swear by is the amber teethng necklace. We got ours off amazon. I know he’s a boy and it’s weird to put necklaces on him…but if it helps?!?
We also use chammomile tablets. They do wonders (and I don’t have to resort to ibprofren all the time).
P.S. here’s my post about the necklace

    Hi Erin,

I’m curious about how the vet recommended you treat Boudreax’s condition? My vet suggested that, for intelligent breeds like our Border Collie, we increased his daily exercise and got him engaged in some training/mental activities. Did yours suggest this as well?

  24. crewlade drinka says

oh, he is SO ADORABLE! love the bubbles/shortalls on him. so precious. and he looks just like you! I have had those headaches sneak up on me, too, and then I suddenly realize I haven’t had a diet coke all day! and those HA’s are hard to get rid of.
Please tell us where you got that fan. I can’t find one anywhere and need it for my 10 wker for outside. (please!) Also, which bathing suit did you end up with? and did you like it after all?

  25. says

You might want to look into pheromones for dogs. It did wonders on my sisters cat’s anxiety after they had spent thousands in vet bills trying to figure it out. She didn’t want to do anti-depressants either on the cat. Hayes is precious!

  26. says

I have NEVER seen Ferris Bueller! Never!! I will have to netflix it.
I really like this post a lot. It makes me feel better about my television-associated mommy-guilt. Do you know how much Mason has learned from Sesame Street and various Sprout shows?

I think the movie is called My Life. It has Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman in it. He has cancer and she is pregnant. I have only seen it once. In the theater. I cried out loud. OUT LOUD. People around me were handing me their tissues. Kinda embarrassing. Sound and music have the memory effect on me. That’s one of the reasons I run on the treadmill to 80’s hair bands. Makes me feel young again. Friends on Nick and Nite made me feel not so young again.

  28. says

When I discovered Friends on Nick at Night, I made my husband try to guess what it was. He was guessing Full House and Saved by the Bell, and I kept telling him “No, worse!” We must be really old now.

  29. lissa says

Regarding the dog: Our bichon used to lick and lick and lick and bite and bite and bite….and THEN, chew. Some of his worst places were around his neck–nasty open wounds–which I found creative ways to pad and protect. We’d always spend the summer with him on antibiotics, antihistamines and steroids. He also seems to have some highly annoying separation anxiety which manifests itself with indoor marking. However….lo and behold…the neighbors cut down a HUGE tree in the backyard that would spread itself heavily over into our yard. NOT ONE SINGLE LICK/SCRATCH/BITE all summer long. Just a question to ponder: does the dog have this problem all year/in every single location? It was only in hindsight that we realized that one vacation the dog went to stay with a friend in a different part of town (obviously without the tree) and didn’t have the problem.

  30. says

what?! NO WAY. Wow…when I was little “I Love Lucy” was on nick at night, and I called it the “old people show that’s boring”. I hope our kids don’t think of Friends like that! Ps–Hayes is your twin!

  31. says

old. That makes me feel VERY old. Should we play the “where were you when Friends started” game? I was still in Russia and watched my first episode the following year with the Closed Captions on which was the only way that I had any chance of catching ANY words and understanding at least a tiny portion of what I was watching.

  32. says

HA! My hubby & I just noticed “Friends” on Nick at Night and I was like, “Say whattttt???” Since when did we get old? I used to watch that in high school!

In other news…..Marley & Me is guaranteed to make me cry. Oh, and I only saw it once, but “My Sister’s Keeper” would probably make me cry again if I saw it a second time. Talk about depressing.

  33. says

your boys are so precious!! one of my pugs suffers anxiety we tried the meds and i just was sick over doing that and it really didn’t seem to help so we got the thunder shirt and it made a huge difference. really recommend it and i think they even have like a 30 day guarantee because at first i was like no way will this work. and i know i felt so old the other day seeing friends on nick at nite. i remember watching nick at nite in my teens it was like i love lucy shows. what’s with the generation leap?
