best and worst of the Oscars

I had a great time hosting an Oscar party for Orville Redenbacher’s last night. The prep work was so much fun and I always love hosting people in my home. The Academy Awards are my version of the Super Bowl and I get really into the whole thing.

Before I recap the party, I wanted to share some of my favorites from the Oscars.

Best Dressed

Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein Collection

I love the color and the fit on her. Her blonde hair is perfection and she is perfectly accessorized. I have loved seeing her make the award show circuit and her Grammy and Glee appearances have made me a very happy fan!

Mila Kunis in Elie Saab Haute Couture

She can do no wrong. The color of this dress is absolutely perfect and so beautiful with her skin and hair color.

Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein Collection

The simplicity makes such a big statement. She is young and beautiful and with her one simple bracelet, she made such a big statement. I was a huge fan of this whole look for her. And I may take her hair color as inspiration to my next hair appointment.

Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier

I also loved Mandy Moore’s performance dress. I wasn’t able to find a picture this morning, but she wears blue so well. And she sounded great. I think Mandy is a classic beauty with a real body. I love the off-the-shoulder dress and the slight sleeve. The color is regal and elegant and I have just been so happy to see so much of Mandy Moore this year.

Best Moments

Jude Law and RDJ

I liked this moment because I love RDJ. That is all.

Anne Hathaway

I thought she did a fantastic job. She was comfortable (except when she kept touching her stomach while wearing this dress) and poised. I love how theatrical she is and that she was just so excited to be up there! I need Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman to host together. I wasn’t at all impressed with James Franco.

But I loved Anne’s musical number and all of her hairstyles. I loved almost all of her dresses and I was very impressed by her, her age, and her ability to seem comfortable on stage while still seeming grateful and almost star-struck.

What do you love and hate about last night’s show? Who topped your best-dressed list?

I totally agree that next year should be Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. I thought she did a great job. Funny, smart, grateful–everything you said. But, as you know, I really wanted to smack James Franco with a stick. Why did they pick him?!?! Ugh. Lame.

And yes, RDJ and Jude Law–loved.

I love Mandy Moore and it was so great to see her again–her blue dress was so pretty! I have always been a big fan of hers–she seems like a sweet, smart, down to earth girl. I wish more young girls looked up to her!

Ohh, I was really disappointed in James Franco, he seemed, um, a bit “off” the whole evening and there was one part at the end where Anne Hathaway had her arm around him and just looked like, “oh my GOD, what is wrong with her, WHY is she touching me, what a nerd.”

I loved Anne though! I think the only low point of the night was that last blue dress, it was a little cheesy Vegas/pleather to me. Loved here hair all night though! How did they do all those hairstyle changes so quickly!?

Also, Reese Witherspoon! So beautiful! She looked like Barbie and I loved that low key, but so elegant black and white dress.

I’m already getting a lot of flack for this, but I loved Cate Blanchett’s dress with all my heart. I think it’s the artist/art historian in me that fell in love with the texture of the beading. She looked like a mosaic.

I’m usually not a huge fan of Anne Hathaway, but her musical number was fantastic. I guess I forget she can sing. Also, two words: Javier. Bardem. Cannot help myself.

I totally agree, I wasn’t impressed with James Franco at all. His timing was weird. I love your idea about Anne and Hugh, my suggestion was Justin Timberlake.

A lot of our “best dressed” are the same. I love, love, love Mandy and how classy she is. I feel like she stays out of the tabloids too…which I love about her. She just seems so normal. She was my winner overall because she had not 1…but 2 amazing dresses last night!
Anne is always perfect. She’s always on my best dressed list. I loved her last night…James Franco, not so much. He was just awkward, monotone and blah. I had high expectations for the duo and he did nothing for me.

I also loved the Jennifer Lawrence look but forgot to include her on my post today (oops!). She definitely went for the less is more approach and I like that. The color rocked and went perfect with her easy hair.
Erin Andrews was another blinged out gown I forgot to include on post this AM but she looked awesome last night. Can I have her body, please?

Can’t wait to hear about your party recap!!!!!!!

I felt the same exact way about Anne and James. Its like he was bored and had somewhere better to me. Poor girl had to basically do the job herself. And I was totally thinking they should have had her and Hugh working together!! I liked him last year. My favorite outfit, hands down, was Celine Dion. She looked amazing…and she just had twins a few months ago. My Lord. Favorite moment- is it wrong to categorize Melissa Leo dropping the f-bomb during her acceptance speech as one of my favorites? Because if so, then it would be the musical numbers they did for Harry Potter and Twilight with what seemed like a T-Pain app:)

I honestly did not like Anne Hathaway :(. I thought she seemd very awkward and a little TOO theatrical…and I agree, she did NOT mix with James Franco! Bring back Billy Crystal! I LOVED Gwyn’s dress too, and also thought Halle Berry and Natalie Portman were show stoppers. I thought Melissa Leo looked a wreck! And that speech of hers…yikes. Overall, I was kind of dissapointed with the whole show..i found myself switching to other channels, and I was SO excited for the Oscars, so bummer…

All great pics – I really was interested in Anne Hathaway’s final dress. The shimmery blue off the shoulder column. I needed a better look at it, or to watch her walk in it to be sure if I liked it or not.

I have to confess that I didn’t love Anne Hathaway. She look beautiful, but I just felt like she came off as being majorly annoying. It seemed to me almost as though she was trying too hard to be likable.

I LOVED Jennifer Lawrence’s look. She looked classic & classy. I also adored some of the well-done tulle, including on Mandy Moore’s & Halle Berry’s dresses. Marisa Tomei, unfortunately, bombed her tulle styling. Eek!

I second Cate Blanchett’s dress. It was so edgy and modern. She is also one of the few that could pull it off too. Also, where was Tilda Swinton? She was so gorgeous in I Am Love, and her outfits in that movie were up for Best Costumer too. Disappointed in that non-appearance. I wasn’t too big on Jennifer Lawrence’s dress–it was a little too straight out of the 90s for me.

I don’t remember Mandy Moore’s performance dress, but if you’re talking about her red carpet dress, it actually wasn’t off the shoulder. She had illusion netting you to her neck and I think this is the only time I’ve ever seen illusion netting and honestly liked it. It suited her perfectly.

I think RDJ can be paired with anyone and they would make a great set of presenters. Seriously, he can do no wrong.

I just read your post about your baby feeding and sleeping schedule. As a mother of three who has not done a great job with my kids sleeping habits I want to tell you how wonderful it is that you would share your system. I hope you didn’t receive any negative comments but I know that it can be a touchy subject especially when your kids are little and you are still going through it. My oldest two children are 10 and 12 now and they don’t have any sleep issues. My five year old we are still struggling with and even though I know it will all work out eventually I wish I had been better about instilling good sleep habits when he was a baby. I hope you are feeling well…you are in the home stretch!!

I enjoy reading your blog and love the way you share with us a piece of your wonderful life each time you post, that takes courage to put yourself out there.

After reading this post I had to share with you a part of my day…I just got back from the taping of Oprah’s After The Oscars special at the Kodak and it was fantastic!!! Anne Hathaway was one of her guests and she was so enjoyable! Very funny! Katie Perry performed with the children from the choir in NY and it took my breath away. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I thought I’d share!

My vote for Best Dressed goes to the always beautiful and classy Mandy Moore!! I love when she walks the red carpet because she always has such amazing fashion choices! I agree that Gwenyth also looked fabulous. Anne is another one of my style icons! I was a little under-whelmed with Reece this year, which makes me sad ;-(

Thanks for the fun post! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog!

I totally agree on the Anne/James Franco thing and I too L.O.V.E. RDJr!! But one of my fav moments was Kirk Douglas! What a Hollywood icon and now an adorable and still funny old man! He was too cute!!

JUST now catching up on Oscar fashion posts! Priorities, sigh. I loved Jennifer Lawrence too, but I felt like I’d seen it before. Some Googling brought me right to Scarlett Johannson at the ’06 Golden Globes. Identical! And Gwyneth looked lovely, but she could show up in a paper bag and look good. (Not to mention anything is an improvement over the scary Goth braids and see-through tank top she wore in ’02!)
