a light at the end of the potty-training tunnel

I have decided to wait until Hudson is 22 months old to begin potty-training. This way he will be all settled in his big boy room, but can still be working on potty-training before his little brother comes along.

When I was in Dallas last week, I was shopping for Christmas decorations (a post for another day) and had to use the restroom while I was in the store.

I saw the most genius thing in the women’s restroom. A bathroom stall that was the answer to my “potty-training a boy prayers.”

If I had ever seen this before I definitely didn’t remember it. Too bad all public restrooms don’t have these!

Wow!! More stores should have something like that….as a mother it makes you appreciated and want to shop at that store even more! My daughter is still working on potty training and she just turned 3. She still shows little interest, but is finally making progress. We have another baby (a boy) due next month so I am anxious to see how this affect her potty success.

I’ve seen stalls with child-sized potties, but I haven’t ever seen one of these before – and my son is seven years old! What a great idea!

I’ve never seen such a thing and as a mother of four boys, it sure would be nice to have this! My 3 year old just trained last month but getting them to stand up and go is a different story. I don’t think I got my older two to try that until they were past 4 years old.

I’ve never seen anything like this before! The only thing I’ve seen special for kids is in highway rest areas in PA. They have a little seat on the wall with carseat-like straps to keep your toddler sitting while you change a baby. I wouldn’t know what to do with a boy lol

That is awesome. I find taking Wyatt to the restroom (usually a family one like at Target) to be SIGNIFICANTLY easier than taking my daughter Reese. We never taught him to sit, so he stands I I don’t have to worry about much. I bought her little Sesame Street covers for on the go trips to the restroom.

I wonder if they have one of these in the men’s restroom for little girls. I think something like this or the family bathroom make all the difference. Kids are aware that they aren’t in the “right” bathroom, or they see stuff you dont want them to see, or bother other patrons, and you certainly don’t want to send them in their bathroom alone for fear or creepy people. I’m thankful that stores are catching on to this need.

very clever concept ! My son is 5 yrs old & I insist that he goes to the ladies room w/ me while out & about. I will not allow him to go to the mens room alone. This has caused problems b/c he prefers to use a urinal. My husband tells me that some mens’ rooms have boy-sized urinals…obv. not my area of expertise ! In addition to Target, my local movie theater also has a Family restroom – great concept, esp. for mothers who may be pushing a stroller. These are wide enough to accomodate.

More stores should have something like that! As someone who will have a son to potty train in a few years, I think this is genius and wish they had them around here!

That is definitely someone’s genius idea! I have two little boys ages 3 and 6 and they always feel so grown-up when their daddy or granddaddy is with them and they can go to the boys bathroom. It will be a long time before I will let them go in by themselves so I wish we had one of those in our neck of the woods. Don’t let the bathroom/potty training issue stress you out, though, having boys is the best gift-I feel truly blessed!

That is too funny! We have those in our school, but I think they are typical in an elementary school. I’m sure Hudson will do great with potty training.

ps. LOVED your blog yesterday! I sent it to a lot of friends 🙂

Hi Erin! I have an almost 3 yr old boy and I am currently due with my second son. My EDD is the same as yours I believe. I’m not sure if you’ve already picked out a potty training plan for Hudson, but if you haven’t, I would recommend the ‘3 day potting training plan’. It’s an e-book you download, written by a Mom with multiple children. It has been very helpful to my husband and I for our son. And ironically enough, she believes 22 months is the optimal age to start. I hope that helps! 🙂

This picture is making me delurk! I have a 3 year old son who we just finished up potty training. He doesn’t like to aim when he goes, so this kind of urinal would be awesome! They should have these is all women’s bathrooms, especially Target.
