I love to read and I love movies almost as much. And I almost always love it when my favorite books are made into amazing movies. But there is a little bit of pressure associated with that. Will they get the casting right? Will they do the book justice? Will they change the ending? (Ahem– Dear John!)
Some of my most recent favorites from my 2009 and 2010 reading list are about to be released at the theater.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett- one of my favorite books ever. I am so excited to see how the casting works and how the film is received by viewers and critics. It is set in the south and was pretty true to Southern culture in the 60s and I wonder how that will be translated for today’s audience.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen- another of my favorite books of all time. The trailer for this movie leaves me so excited and I think everything just looks so beautiful and magical. The story is suspenseful and it is set in a very dark time, but I think they got the casting right on this one. I love Reese Witherspoon, but I’m not usually a Robert Pattinson fan. But when I saw him in the trailer, he transformed in my eyes. I’m just so excited!
Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin (in theaters May 6- maybe I can schedule my delivery date for May 7 so I can make sure to see this while it’s in the theater!)
I am a little confused why John Krasinski’s character has a strong presence in this movie when his character really was more present in the second book, Something Blue.
The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks (this one doesn’t come out until 2012, but I’m still excited!)
This Nicholas Sparks book was very suspenseful and that made it one of my favorites of his. And Zac Efron is going to be in the movie, so that’s kind of exciting!

What movies are you looking forward to seeing?

Oh this just made me so excited for life! I will be seeing every one of these in theatres! Thanks for sharing!
Reese Witherspoon and RPattz in a movie together? Yes please!! Thanks for filling me in!
I loved Something Borrowed and can not wait for the movie, although I have a feeling I will be disappointed. I have heard nothing but good things about The Help and definitely have that on my summer list, along with a few others!
I hate not being “up-to-date” on my reading list, but with teaching and grad school I easily run out of time. Can’t wait for spring break and summer!!
I’m so excited for all of these too!!! Too bad we don’t live in the same town because then we could see some of these together. Looks like we have the similar taste in books/movies. ๐
I had the same question about John Krasinki in Something Borrowed as well! I mean, I think he’s a cutie, so, I’m not totally against it, but, everything else I’ve seen seems close to the book (yay!) that I’m curious why that got thrown in there.
I am so excited for The Help, Water For Elephants, and Something Borrowed! While I never like the movies as much as the books, it’s so fun to see a book you love brought to life. This Summer looks like it will be full of great movies!
Oh my, I knew about Water For Elephants, but didn’t know about the movie coming out for The Help. It was one of my favorite books last year. Can’t wait to see it. I also want to read Something Borrowed now, didn’t know that one was coming out as a movie also. Thanks for the heads up!
Love love love the help! I’m hoping the movie does it a little justice. Bookmarking this post to add to my reading list!
I had the same reaction that you did with Water For Elephants. Yay on Reese, Huh? on Robert. Not a Twilight fan. I loved the book so much though that I just have to see it.
Didn’t know that The Help was being made into a movie too, have the book just haven’t gotten to it yet. I will before the movie comes out.
Only book on this list I haven’t read is The Lucky One and I think that just made my “to read” list now.
I am excited for The Help, I think that will be good. A little worried about Something Borrowed, Ginnifer Goodwin is one of my favorites but I have this feeling that the story and the writing won’t come through as well in a movie.
I love, love, love to read but am usually disappointed in the movie version of my favorites. However, I always hold out hope and will plan to see The Help and Water for Elephants. How could I not?!
I’m dying to see Water for Elephants! I read it because of your good review and just loved it. Hope the movie does it justice!
My mom just gave me The Help. I can’t wait to read it. Water for Elephants is also on my “To Read” list. I LOVED Something Borrowed…I think Kate Hudson will be a great Darcy. Looking forward to all of these movies!
I can’t wait to see Something Borrowed!
I’m ridiculously excited for all of those movies, save the Nicholas Sparks one. For some reason, I just haven’t been a fan of the film adaptations of his books (except for The Notebook, which is the Holy Grail of all movies, IMO). I absolutely loved “The Help” and I think seeing the story woven together, instead of reading it in the fragmented snippets of the story you got in the book, will be wonderful! “Water for Elephants” is on my To-Read List, and I want to read the book before the movie so that’s good motivation. You were so sweet to loan me all the Emily Giffin books last year, and I blazed through “Something Borrowed” in ONE sitting. It was that good. Counting down the days till that one comes out! ๐
I cannot wait for these movies! I am due April 29 so hopefully I’ll at least make it to Water for Elephants (but if the baby comes early I won’t complain!). We have the same taste in books and so many things in common, if I lived in SC we’d have to get together!
I totally agree with your favorites! The Help tops my list. However, I read in the paper last week that the author is being sued by the nanny she hired to watch her own kids. The author claims the characters were totally made up but her own nanny is Ablene–pretty close to the Aibileen character in the book! Hmm….
I read every Nicholas Sparks book and always go see the movies in the theater. I too, was shocked that they changed the ending of Dear John!! The Help was amazing and I can’t wait to see that film. Water For Elephants in currently on my nightstand and I’m half way through it!! And, I had no idea they were making The Lucky One into a movie. That news made my day!
Really? Kate Hudson in Something Borrowed?!
Im SO excited about ALL these movies!!!!!!!! ๐
I’m super excited about The Help. I loved the book, and even better, it was filmed here. It will be so fun to see place I got all the time in a different light.
I just finished reading The Secret Life of Bees. I am SO excited to watch that movie. If you haven’t read it yet, you must!
Also, I did NOT know Something Borrowed was being made into a movie! Thanks for the heads up there…. I absolutely LOVE Emily Giffin!
Each one of these bookd just made it onto my must-read list! I love when movies are made out of books, although I’m not sure why I get so excited each time; more often than not, the books FAR surpass the movies! Nonetheless, I’ll be reading these and going to see them!
I absolutely cannot wait for The Help to come to the theater! Perfect girls night/book club outing!
I am so excited about Something Borrowed!! Loved that book!
Something borrowed was actually filmed down the street from my home on long island! I am super excited to see my hometown on the big screen! It was set as the Hamptons even though that is not where i live
Movies based on books are always such a toss up for me. I love the thought of seeing the books I read brought to life but I’m so often disappointed. I try not to see movies based on books I truly love. That’s why I’m conflicted about seeing The Help. I so loved the book but I am not too enthusiastic about the casting for the movie and I’m worried the movie just can’t compare. I am excited to see Something Borrowed though – it looks fun! Water for Elephants looks great too. I’m also excited to see the Millenium Trilogy movies and the Hunger Games movies – but those won’t be out for quite a while.
I’m looking forward to Something Borrowed and The Help. I loved both books!! I’m in the middle of reading water for Elephants right now. Some girls and I were discussing Something Borrowed at work. We’ve all read the two books and I have a strong feeling that they will combine both books into one movie, kind of how they did with Confessions of a Shopaholic which turned out to be a disaster. So I’m just hoping for the best on this one since I LOVED both books in the Emily Giffin series.
Oh fun! I’ll definitely be seeing all of these ๐
LOVE Emily Giffin…… i thought all of her books were great!!!
Glad you all had a safe trip!
We’ve already chatted about Water for Elephants, so I won’t reiterate ๐ I will say making Uncle Al + August into JUST August for the film? Genius. Makes him so much scarier.
I saw the previews for Something Borrowed yesterday when my Mr. and I went to see Unknown, and I have to say, Kate Hudson looks like she’s going to be a scene stealer!
Haven’t read any of the other books, though, so I can’t really comment on the cast/rewrites but I’m interested to see how you like the movies since we’re both wary of our favorite books being adapted for film.
I can’t wait to see Water for Elephants either, but I’m really excited about Cars 2 coming out in June! We can’t get enough of the first movie, and I hope this second one can hold a candle to it! I’m just reading Something Borrowed now, so will like to see the movie when it comes out too. Of course, excited about The Help movie. Movies just never live up to the hype and are never as good as the books though!
Is that Tyra from FNL?
I am SO excited!!!
I will go see Something Borrowed simply because of John Krasinski ๐
AH! I’ve read all of those – except The Help. I saw the preview for “Water for Elephants” last night & almost hopped out of my theater seat with excitement. I read “Something Borrowed” & “Something Blue” ages ago so I’ve been eagerly awaiting their films for awhile. So glad someone else is as excited about all of these as me ๐
I am so excited!!!
Woo to the hoo! All of these sound exciting.
Well since I loved Emily Giffin’s books I am super excited about Something Borrowed. I so hope it is good!! I also loved The Help and look forward to that movie also. And one you did not mention is the first part of Breaking Dawn. Yes I am old. Yes I love Twilight. Yes I love Robert Pattinson. Which means I am also looking forward to Water for Elephants.
I’m excited about Something Borrowed!! I just started the series this week and haven’t been able to put the books down! I’d like to read Water for Elephants after I finish these books. And, I also need to read The Lucky One. They all sound amazing though!!! Nice to finally have some good storylines in the theaters!
I’m with you! These all look fantastic!
I can’t wait for the Help, I really hope the movie lives up to the book.
Now WFE – I’m having such a hard time with Reese. I just don’t feel like she is right, I pictured younger. Now I love Rob(twlight and all) but he is so much hotter in this movie and perfect for the part.
Something borrowed – I pictured Dex totally different. But I’m still excited.
Ooh and swoon Zac Efron.
Ooh, I didn’t realize Christoph Waltz was in Water For Elephants, playing the horrid husband! Brilliant casting there. I’m really excited about that and The Help, too.
I’m just half-way through The Help right now, but that picture of Abiliene (I’m assuming that’s who is in the picture anyway) is exactly how I picture her! I love the cover of the book, I always take the dust jackets off while reading so I’ve forgotten just how pretty it is. ๐
I LOVE all of these books and cannot wait for the movies. I just finished Water for Elephants yesterday…couldn’t put it down!
This just made me so excited! I loved Something Borrowed…such a good book! I wonder if they will make Something Blue a movie next!
Thank you for posting this! I just love your book recommendations and to see them turned into movies is so exciting! Heads up that one that MUST be on your reading list, “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” is in production right now. I can’t WAIT to see that one, even though I’m sure it can’t possibly compare with the book.
I cannot WAIT to see Water for Elephants – it’s one of my favorite books and I really hope the movie does it justice! Also, didn’t know that the Lucky One was being turned into a movie (though it figures, I think Nicholas Sparks should just start writing scripts!)… I just read that last month and really enjoyed it, so I’ll be looking forward to that one.
Thanks for this post, im excited to get this books and start reading them!

I am just as excited to see these movie-versions… probably most for “Sobo.” I got to meet Emily Giffin last summer and she seems very involved in the making of the movie, so hopefully it will be as good as the book!
I love all of these books!!! Can’t wait to see the movies!!!
I’m really looking forward to Water for Elephants – loved that book! I have The Help sitting on my bookshelf right now that I absolutely need to read soon. Thanks for the reminder!
WHAT?!?! They changed the ending for Dear John? I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s on my DVR, ready to be watched on some rainy day in the future. I LOVED the book and even though the ending was sad, it was real and honest.
I read somewhere that they were combining “Something Borrowed” and “Something Blue” when they were making the movie, kind of like how they combined a few of the “Confessions of a Shopaholic” books in the movie. That’s probably why John Krasinki’s character is so present in the movie.
Ive read all of those books except for the last one…I am SO EXCITED for The Help! It was my favorite book of all time…I still think about it sometimes. I didn’t even know the others were coming out as movies! Love Emily Giffin–I have read them all!
I had no idea Something Borrowed was being made into a movie–so excited!
I absolutely CANNOT wait to see Water for Elephants, The Help, and Something Borrowed!! All fabulous books, that will HOPEFULLY make fabulous movies too.
I haven’t read The Lucky One, it looks like I’ll have to add that one to my list.
I LOVED “The Help!” It was so great that I finished it in one weekend. ๐ Also, can I please just say I did a little squeal when I saw that “Something Borrowed” was coming out in theaters? Such a great book.
I recently read The Help with my book club and was excited to hear it will be a movie, and “Water for Elephants” I am there but just hope, hope, hope they do it right….
I loved The Help and Something Borrowed as well and I can’t wait for both movies. Water for the Elephants has been on my list for ages so I need to hurry up and read it before the movie comes out. The trailer looks really good though.
