truth-telling fridays?

So I loved my little opportunity to tell it like I see it in my “honestly…” post from a few days ago. I’m thinking I may need to end every week on that kind of note. I’m not so great with keeping up with days-of-the-week-blogging, but we’ll see how this goes.

1. It is cold. But. I have made a vow to myself never ever to complain about the cold because I really can’t stand the heat and I live in the South. The heat is gonna come every single year no matter what, so I’m just taking advantage of the fact that I can put on more clothes than I can take off!

2. I am mourning the loss of Lost. A year later. If I had a little bit more time on my hands I might break out my DVDs and watch from the first episode. Rachel, are you with me?

3. I made a casserole (Bow Tie Fiesta to be specific) stretch from Monday until today’s lunch. That’s a lot of casserole-eating. And I only ate one supper that wasn’t that casserole this week.

4. TC was gone a couple of nights this week because of work– and the back of his head was even on TV for a second. If he’d been at home, I promise we wouldn’t have eaten Bow Tie Fiesta for that many meals!

5. Budgeting is the most depressing thing on the planet. Especially when you’re saving for college for two kids. So much of our money goes to things that we will never ever touch. (And I know things like insurance and savings are immeasurably important.)

6. I could listen to the following songs on repeat every single day and never get tired of them:

  • “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight and the Pipps
  • “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John
  • “Second Hand News” by Fleetwood Mac
  • “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel
  • “S.O.S.” by ABBA
  • “Cowboy Take Me Away” by The Dixie Chicks

7. You know what else is depressing? Cleaning out your closet and refusing to sell or donate the dresses you wore on your wedding weekend. But also knowing that you will never be a size 2 or 4 again. Excuse me while I go weep into my ice cream.

8. When discussing turning 30 in 2012 with a friend, we both decided that these late 20s and no doubt the early 30s will be so much better than the early and mid-20s were. Those were some fun years, for sure. But I wouldn’t trade where I am now for anything. And I have a feeling that every year that goes by and every little line on my forehead or around my eyes will be welcomed. Laughing is so much more fun than unnecessary drama and uncertainty.

9. I finished The Art of Racing in the Rain during one of Hudson’s naps this week. It’s a good thing I was home and my child was sleeping because the sobbing noises I was making would have frightened him for sure.

10. The worst SAHM days are when it’s freezing and rainy or snowy outside. Hudson wants to play outside or go somewhere so badly, and there’s just no where to go. So we’re getting creative with sticker books and baking. But I honestly wish I could just ask Boudreaux to keep an eye on Hudson for a minute while I go take a nap.

11. That last sentence is a joke.

12. I am stupidly tempted by anything in the stores that is red and pink. Valentine’s Day was made for suckers like me who just like to buy cute heart-shaped things that serve no purpose. A cute little bath mat at Target with hearts on it? Yep- made just for me. For me to enjoy for a couple of days and then beg someone to take it off my hands!

Target always has the cutest stuff for each holiday – but its definitely only possibly to use it for a short time 🙂 I love their plastic plates & bowls for each holiday. I’d like to use them for my kiddos someday – if we have them!

  2. says

I feel the same way about budgeting & insurance ha! Can’t do without it so oh well. As for honesty, well you seem like such a happy, positive person. I wish I knew how to look at the bright side and be positive more often! Oh and I LOVE that Dixie Chicks song 🙂

Number 10 cracks me up! And as someone who will be thirty in less than 6 months, I completely agree. I loved my early 20s but I wouldn’t go back for anything.

  4. says

I’m such a sucker for holiday things and Target..together always. Budgeting is not my friend either 🙁 Clothes – I’m the WORST. If you saw the pile in my guess room right now, your mouth will drop. I’ve not worn them in years. I’d definitely try the truth-telling Fridays!

  5. says

Oh my goodness I could make a casserole stretch that long too, I bet. How in America do I not know that Fleetwood Mac song?? I sadly have size 4 dresses hanging in my closet from my honeymoon-and mine was 10 years ago!! I’ll make a pact- you get rid of yours and I’ll get rid of mine 😉 For some reason I just can’t let go!!

Saw on yesterdays post you mentioned getting photo albums through Exposure. Looked at the site and it was really cool but a littler overwhelming. Can you tell us which album you usually get and tell us why you like them? Would love your thoughts on them.

Right there with ya on the Valentine’s thing. In fact, I’ve been avoiding that aisle in Target just so I won’t see something cute and buy it. Also, I saw Jennifer Aniston on Oprah this week (I know you’re not a fan of Oprah) but she said she loved being in her 40s because she was finally comfortable in her own skin and much more at peace. I look forward to that since I’ll be 36 this year!

I completely understand 10 except I don’t have a dog and my 2 year old can’t watch herself! {Not that I’d leave a dog to watch her either, just thought I’d clarify that!} She’s been sick and my husband’s been out in the field doing training since Monday morning– I think I’m going stir crazy! I’m desperate to see another adult!

#5 – We just finished our budget meeting. I just try and keep my eyes on the goal – but it would be so much more fun to go out to lunch more often!
#8 – I’m there – actually, past there! – and you are absolutely correct. I just spent some time with a friend this morning. When I’m with her, I am reminded (again and again) how much more important time spent on relationships is than time spent doing most anything else.
#11 – Oh, but it *would* be grand, wouldn’t it?
I really enjoyed this post, Erin! Have a great weekend!

You have the keep the dresses from your wedding weekend! I still have my rehearsal dinner dress, the outfit I wore to lunch the day of, the outfit I wore to get my hair and make-up done, and the dress I wore Sunday morning/afternoon, as we ate three separate meals. (Shh! Don’t tell anyone I ate THREE breakfasts/lunches the day after my wedding.) I will never, ever fit in those dresses again but I love them and I have such fond memories of them. And budgeting? I am SO sick of that word. It’s hard to remember that life insurance and college savings are vastly important when there’s a cute new pair of strappy sandals that I want! Ha! And then I remember I have NOwhere to wear the sandals, and that usually helps soften the blow a bit.

Your casserole comment cracked me up!! I could make a casserole last an entire week, but my hubby would NOT be happy about it 🙂 If I had it my way, we’d just eat the leftovers than have to cook a different meal every night!!

  12. says

We’ve been living off of roast and potatoes since Tuesday. At least these winter foods are hearty and filling!

And I’ve also been missing something in my life since LOST ended. I think starting from episode 1 is a great idea!

  13. says

I am also in the process of letting go of the idea (and the clothing) in the sizes I will never wear again…as well as budgeting so we can get rid of debt and save for college….no fun! Like the honesty on Friday 🙂

  14. says

Agreed on all of the above! I had twins a few months ago and decided to clean out my closet a couple weeks ago and found a pair of size 0 pants!!!! For kicks, I decided to try and put them on…yeah, they didn’t even make it past my thighs, much less my waist. Oh well…can you pass me a spoonful of that ice cream???

  15. says

#2… Me too! Truth be told, if I think about it too much, sometimes I get choked up! Is that awful?!? My hubby & I were die-hard Lost fans and I am SO sad that its over. I find myself obsessing over whether or not Ben ever made it to the “other side” :o(

  16. lizziefitz says

Cheers to this post! Your song choices are perfect. I can’t tell you how many “things” I just HAD to have only to turn around and sell at a yard sale. Sold for less than the S/H on the item OIYY!!!

  17. MrsD says

can totally relate to #7 & #8. Do not throw away any dress that you wore on a special occassion in my opinion. Women (well not all, but many) mark milestones w/ what they were wearing. For instance, I still have the dress I wore on my 1st date w/ husband, suit I wore the night he proposed, dress I wore to my rehearsal dinner & the dress I wore the day my only child was christened. They hang in my closet, most have not been worn in a decade, but seeing them in my closet make me happy ! And #8 – I agree that I would never want to go back to live thru my early 20s. I will be 40 next year and loved my 30s. Turning 30 was emotional but such a fun ride !

  18. says

I saw Elton John & Billy Joel in concert about a year ago. It. Was. Fabulous. The fact that they are both on the old-ish side for rock stars and are still rocking totally amazed me. Spring is my favorite season-I love all of the plants and flowers beginning to grow and, for about two weeks, when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. According to Punxsutawney Phil we are in for an early spring this year. I’ll believe it when I see it!

  19. says

The great thing about leaving behind the early and mid-twenties is that you don’t have time to focus solely on yourself and your pant size. Aren’t two little boys SOOOOOOOO much better to be thinking about and living for? They are for me!

  20. says

I’m a total sucker for Valentine’s Day things too. I don’t know why!? It’s only up for a short period of time. It’s just so stinkin’ cute!

  21. says

I have the SAME problem with #12! Why in the world do I need any of the cheap V-day decor from Target? I have no use for it at all, but always linger at that section forever contemplating what I could actually make work. Seasonal stuff at Target is my weakness!

  22. says

I totally agree with #12 too! Target and Hobby Lobby are the WORST (T.J. Maxx and Homegoods are so hard to walk through around Valentine’s too!) my kitchen is mostly red anyway, so I’m rationalizing all the heart purchases that they can be used year round? That works, right???

  23. says

I’m turning 30 in June, and while I agree I wouldn’t go back to 20 for ANYTHING… something about being 30 just seems so… OLD… aaagh!

And yes- valentines day decorations speak to me… I have to make myself walk away.

  24. says

Well as you know – these are my favorite posts of yours!! 🙂

Budgeting is sad and fun at the same time for me. I love that thought of saving…until I see something cute that I want for the house. 🙂

I’m so impressed that you ate Bow-Tie Fiesta for that many meals!! I’m so bad about leftovers.

    #10 made me LOL.

And I love Valentine stuff too! I always put some things out for just about every little and big holiday. And the pack them back up in the “seasonal closet.” The pink and red are fun to look at – even if it’s just for 2 weeks! 🙂

I hope you’re feeling well, little mama. Have a good weekend!

  25. says

You had me at LOST. I miss that show so so so much. It’s right about this time of year when it comes back on our TV and we anxiously await our Wednesday night show. Sigh. No more Lost. I was just thinking of it the other day and Mr. D and I were saying it’s almost time for us to go back and re-watch everything. I hope a lot of stuff is a lot more obvious now. (Not to mention I miss staring at Matthew Fox shirtless for an hour…and Sawyer wasn’t too bad either.)
I know what you mean about budgeting. We recently started Dave Ramsey and wow talk about a budget. It will be great though in the future because we’re already starting to save for college for our children (and we don’t have any yet…..well, I don’t think McGruff will be doing any higher education. Haha). Good for you though. Staying on a budget can be so boring and annoying….but also so rewarding in the end.

  26. says

Of course I’m with you on the LOST! I wish I had a long weekend where I could come down and watch it with you in our pj’s!

Also…”Second Hand News?” One of my all time favorites!! Next time we’re together we can sing along 🙂

  27. says

I love Lost! I’ve been watching from the beginning again since December. It’s perfect for all of these snowy and cold days we’ve had.

  28. says

    I love your honest lists!

    1. I jumped on the LOST train approximately six weeks ago. In that amount of time, the husband and I have watched approximately 84 hours, leading us up to episode 5 of Season 4 and I can say without a doubt that I am desperately addicted. I have ZERO idea as to why I missed out all these years- but thank the stars for Netflix, no commercials and consecutive epsidode watching. The downside? I don’t have anyone to freak out over it with! Its just SO good. Wow.

    2. I, too, have SUCH a hard time letting go of the clothes that I will never fit into anymore. I’m really trying to embrace my new Mom-bod, but truthfully? I’m mourning the six pairs of size 28 jeans that I will never, ever wear again. Thanks in large part, to my new hips. However, I refuse to part with them.

    3. I think B would make an excellent babysitter. We’re beginning to put Sheepie through the training process. I mean, he’s a sheepdog afterall! He’s got herding instincts! Right? Even better, we can just pay him in doggie biscuits.

    4. Don’t even get me started on budgets and savings… Just keep thinking about the futures of those two handsome boys 🙂

Hope you’re having a fab little Sunday!

  29. says

    Good morning from Tokyo!

It’s been a while since commenting, but I’ve been happily reading along, praying for you and your family as you prepare to welcome your second little one. May you all have a wonderful weekend!

My best to you and yours…

    Warmly,

    Elizabeth

Just had to say thanks for sharing your thoughts… I check your blog a few times a week and always love reading what you’ve written. Keep it up and thanks for sharing!

  31. says

I love the honesty in this post!

I can completely relate to #5 and #7. I despise budgetting and totally wish that it wasn’t necessary! And I have lots of clothes that I refuse to get rid of because I WILL fit into them again someday…a girl can dream 😉

  32. Ashley says

I am such a sucker for ALL holiday-themed items! And I also impulsively throw out things that we aren’t using at the time, so if I let myself, I’d go to Target and grab all the Valentine’s Day stuff, and then in 6 months, I’d be like “we are NOT using these” and then throw them out, then turn around and do it all over again the next year! I started and finished the entire series of LOST in record time recently. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit how much tv I watched per day during that time! I love that show, so sad that it’s over!

  33. Laurel says

So glad you enjoyed The Art of Racing in the Rain. Definitely a Kleenex book, but I was glad I read it. Now that my dog of 17 years went to that doghouse in the sky last week, not sure when I’ll read it again!

  34. says

Oh my gosh … did you see that Whole Foods is going to have heart-shaped steaks for valentine’s day? I seriously might have to trudge through this never-ending snow to grab some of them!
