I was always more a fan of Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out for Summer” than Grease 2’s “Back to School.”
Not because I’m a huge Alice Cooper fan and not a Grease 2 fan, but because I don’t like school. My husband always liked school. In fact, I think if he could be a student forever he would.
Some kids got really excited about the first day of school. Not this girl. I loved shopping for school supplies and looking at all of my school supplies and fitting them neatly into my backpack. But the thought of stepping into the classroom sent a million butterflies fluttering around in my tummy. As you can imagine, I was always nervous and full of anxiety. I know that a few times I got so nervous that I made myself sick before I even left the house. Why was I so nervous?
I’m not sure. Maybe I was worried I wouldn’t like my teacher or that it would be the year that I’d be the chosen girl to be outcast. (Girls are mean, by the way.) Maybe I was worried that I wouldn’t understand any of the math in the 5th grade… or 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grades. Who knows!
And still, to this day, I have feelings of pity and my nerves are aflutter when I hear a kid talking about going back to school.
But the time is here! School speed zones are in effect and kids are everywhere. The college kids are everywhere, too. Their parents are helping them move back into the dorms on a 110 degree day. The roads are all jammed up. No more zipping down the street like we enjoyed in the summer. Life is back to normal.
Even though the thought of going back to school still makes me nervous, I love fall. I love the colors on the trees, the sound of the leaves falling, drinking spiced hot drinks, eating Frito chili pie, and going to football games. I like going to football games even more in late October and November because they actually feel like football games.

I’ve already mentioned that I’m not a fan of the summer months simply because of the heat. I don’t love the constant sweating, and honestly? I feel like I don’t see people that often in the summer time. We’re all hanging out inside waiting on the 70 degree temperatures. When the fall rolls around it’s not even cold, so the fall is just so nice. I’m looking forward to the fun things that we can do outside together as a family and the things that our community has to offer in the fall.
I’m excited about the road trip to Gainesville and a girls trip at the lake in Virginia. Fun, cozy times with my family. And my birthday is in the fall– we love birthdays.
So while I was never a fan of back to school time, I do love the season that immediately follows it. And I will be welcoming that season with open arms!
How did you feel about going back to school as a kid?
What are you most looking forward to in the fall?

I loved school but would still get anxiety when it began, even though I was excited. However, I LOVE fall. Looking forward to the weather, everything pumpkin I can bake, and fall clothes!
Grease 2 is one of my favorite movies. The soundtrack doesn’t get enough credit.
I’m most looking forward to football! Different stadium, of course, but same idea. 🙂 And, grudgingly, to my Macky’s first birthday. Fall may forever be my favorite time of year, if only because that’s when we met our little man!
I loved school… (enough that I was a teacher before I stayed home), but now that my oldest is starting Kindergarten on Monday, I wanna puke. I’m so scared for her. Not academically. Socially. She’s super sweet. And like you said, girls are mean!!! And it starts younger than EVER nowadays. I’m just praying that God will give her one good friend to sit with at lunch and to play with it at recess. It’s amazing how one good friend can make everything ok.
I love going back to school but I love fall, too! The first day of school is always my favorite as a teacher. You have me drooling thinking about spiced drinks. Maybe you could post your recipe for Frito chili pie? It sounds amazing; I’ve never had it. I’ve only had a walking taco, which sounds similar, but not really– ha! But when I do eat chili, I think I put equal amounts of chili and Fritos in my bowl! 🙂
I am a huge fan of school and since graduating I miss it! I don’t miss homework or tests but I miss the purpose of going to class, the change of who I’d see all day and I LOVED buying all my school supplies. But even now I miss it so much I am going to try a graduate class this fall.
So this fall I am looking forward to being a student again, football games, and the state fair!
I was a complete nerd. I LOVED going back to school. Truthfully, I hated the end of the school year. I would actually play teacher during the summer..what a loser. But I do love fall…the smells, the tastes, the clothes…the Texas heat. 🙂
Just blogged today about the fact that FOOTBALL SEASON is a mere two weeks away. (And may I just say, GO DAWGS!) I am more ready than ever for the cooler weather! I’m a stay-at-home-mama for the second year in a row so I was too excited about school being back in because I didn’t have to go! Usually I’m clinging onto summer…not this year!!! Fall is my favorite season!!!
I LOVED going back to school! I loved the school supplies, the back-to-school shopping, the color-coding of my calendar with my class schedule, and especially seeing all my friends every day again (especially in college!). I think I also just really like having a set schedule and summer is a little bit different every day when you’re a kid.
MMmmmmmmm CANNOT WAIT for fall!
Wow. Rereading that… I am such a huge dork.
I can’t wait for FALL! I can’t wait to get into a good routine, with school etc.., go apple picking, decorate the house for Fall, winter clothes, warm socks, a fire in the fireplace.
And, really, not having to wear a bathing suit every weekend is going to be a nice ego boost!
Going back to school for me was like my favorite thing on the planet. in addition to organizing my Lisa Frank school supplies and picking out my first-day-of-school outfit, i would also have a count down calendar to the first day! And I’d walk into school on that first day and be completely in my element. School was my bff.
And i am a nerd!
I hated going back to school. That meant I had to go to bed earlier, I would have homework, and I couldn’t just be a kid. I remember crying and crying about it.
The sudden influx of college students is killing me! I always forget that you are in the same boat. One good thing- my new grocery store (closer to new house) is college student free!
I think I was always a little bit nervous about school starting too. Especially if I didn’t know if my friends had the same schedule, classes or lunch time as I did. I loved the school supplies though! Anyone remember the Lisa Frank collection? I had the folders with big bright unicorns and yellow golden retrievers on it along with the awesomest metal pencil case by her. Good stuff 🙂
Football!!!! And scarves, and jeans, and hoodies, and boots. I am so over this heat!!!!! I’m ready for road trips to Athens and Clemson for football games. I am just ready for fall!!!
I love going back to school – as a student and as a teacher, I love the anticipation of a new year, the new clothes and supplies, and knowing that this could be the best year yet. Fall is my absolute favorite season…we love football at our house, Halloween and Thanksgiving, fires, trips to the mountains, cozy sweaters, new jeans, and finally being able to sit on our porch and have a cocktail without melting before we can finish our drinks.
I loved school! Like your husband, I would stay in school my whole life if I could. If only I could figure out a way to make a living as a professional student…
And my favorite back to school song – the one Billy Madison sang while waiting for the bus. “Oh, back to school, back to school, to prove to dad that I’m not a fool. Got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight…” Cracks me up every time!
I know the feeling of going back to school… after graduating in May 2007 with my BS in Radiologic Science, I decided to go back and pursue a nursing degree this past semester! It was SOOOOOOOOO hard to go back to school after being out for almost 3 years! No I am in my second level of clinicals and VERY nervous about the first day! You would think that a grown woman that already has a degree could be cool on the first day… NOT SO MUCH! LOL!
PS…. I’m SOOOOOOOOOOO stinking ready for the fall! I totally agree that I don’t like the summer at all! UGH! It’s just too hot in the south… especially Louisiana!
if I could go back to college i would, but I would skip class every day. i miss the excitement of keg parties, no friday classes, mexican on thursday nights, and football games. luckily i still get to go to the football games (but not for free anymore 🙁 ). and i can remember having to walk all the way in the armpit Cola heat from the BA to the Coliseum. Worst. Walk. Ever. And move in day was for the birds.
I HATED going back to school. In college it was easier because I never had a break thanks to summer school (my choice, fyi, because I’m a nerd). But jr. high? High school? Gag me. Hated it. And yes, girls are mean. I was never in the “cool” crowd–sure, my friends were, but, I, myself? Notsomuch. This caused soooooo much anxiety. And how silly really, I mean, do I care now? Nope. But then? It was the biggest deal ever. Sheesh.
As a November birthday myself, I do really like fall. Moreso as I’ve gotten older. I enjoy the colors, the smells (pumkin pie, fire in the fireplace), the food (soup!), and I adore scarves, so, any season in which they are popular is fine by me.
I felt the same way about school as you. I sure did love those school supplies and new school clothes! Even now, if I didn’t have to work I wouldn’t.
You have made me SO ready for the Fall!!!!!! 🙂
I love Fall for similar reasons! Gamecock football, my birthday, beach trips when it’s warm enough to be on the beach in the day, but cool enough to layer up a bit at night, Oyster Roasts….ahhhhhh!
Fall has always been my favorite season. I love Halloween, watching the leaves change, the crisp weather! This Fall is the best reason yet! I’m getting married Oct 20th! The only downside is winter wont be far behind, that means 3 ft of snow around here.
You must tell us… What is Frito chili pie?!?! Recipe post, please!
GOOOOOO GAMECOCKS!!!! I’m going to miss the first game and I’m so incredibly sad! That’s a great picture Williams Brice, by the way.
I have always absolutely loved back to school time- the shopping, the new supplies, my friends! I always got a little case of nerves right before I left, but I’ve never not looked forward to the first day of school. I guess that might be why I became a teacher!
My mom always laughs about how nervous I was the night before school started. Now, as a teacher… nothing has changed! For me it’s the anxiety of comparing my incoming kindergartners to the ones that left me two months ago and are now first graders. These guys are SO little, and have so much to learn! I worry about being ‘good enough,’ teaching them enough…etc. Today’s the first day and I’m glad it’s nearly over!
Erin, I hated going back to school. I had knot after knot tied up in my tummy weeks before it even started. I’m not sure what it was, but ugh – I hate it. I have to admit that I was laying in bed last night and I couldn’t sleep. I got on FB and saw lots of friends Back To School pictures of their kids and I just started bawling. I can’t imagine Levi’s first day and I don’t ever want it to happen!!! AHHHHH!!
Fall has always been my favorite season for two of the reasons you mention: it begins with my birthday in September and there is nothing I love more than new school supplies! Nowadays I am a little old for school supplies but I am really looking forward to wrapping up warm in sweaters, scarves and boots. That said, when it starts raining every day here in Paris I will probably miss summer all over again!
I always remember getting little butterflies about starting school! But was never overly anxious like some of my other classmates! I was always the type to just “get in, get out” – I was so ready to move on and get done with school! I never liked falling behind so I never wanted to miss a day…even if I was sick! As far as this weather goes, it’s HORRID! In North Louisiana, it’s sooooooo stinking hot and humid.. it almost takes your breath away. It takes your appetite away and takes fun away – I can’t even take my little man outside for 3 minutes without him getting totally red in the face!!! But I assure you, when winter cold comes around, I’m SICK of the cold too. I guess some of us can never be happy with the weather! HAHA.. I’m a Spring and later Fall person.. I like it when it’s not humid and about 70 degrees outside!!!
I love the fall too! My husband and I were married in September and our daughter’s birthday is in October (totally planned on my part and it worked out perfectly!) I am from the Midwest, Big 10 country, so Universtiy of Illinois football games are my favorite!
Don’t tell my husband, but I think I’m ready for football season to start! hehe
A road trip to Gainesville?!? How fun! That’s where I’m living. 🙂
That is so funny that you didn’t like school! I would have thought you would have loved school! I guess because you are such a good writer and so organized, etc. (A teacher’s dream!)
I love fall, too. I am so excited for all the things you mentioned. This heat and humidity is seriously killing me!!
I teach 4th grade and as I teacher I get nervous my first day. I’m always worried about what the parents will think. I want to organized and up to date and I want to provide them with as much information as possible. I love when parents want me to be their child’s teacher. That is the most incredible feeling and such an honor. I don’t get as nervous with the students because their 9-10 years old, so if I mess up, they won’t really know! I just want them to like school and have fun learning.
I am soooo excited for fall. I love hayrides and bonfires! I can’t wait to carve pumpkins and see all the kids trick-or-treat!
Surprisingly, I always enjoyed the first day of school. Mainly for the social aspect of it 🙂 I liked seeing all my friends again and catching up. The shopping that was done for the school supplies and finding that perfect back to school outfit! Fall is my all time favorite season. I love the pumpkin spice lattes, carving pumpkins & roasting the seeds. I enjoy the fall fashion and all of my favorite shows are back on TV which means Thursday night-wine night/grey’s/girls night 🙂 I couldn’t be happier!
I am looking forward to football, my anniversary, sweaters, apple picking, chili, and FINALLY having my hair back. I will not miss the insane humidity that has been wrecking havoc on my hair all Summer!
I hated school for much the same reasons as Stephanie…homework, earlier bedtime, strict rules at a Catholic grade school. I still dislike the whole process for my kids, though I don’t show it for fear of instilling it in them….they like school. I just despised the whole drudgery of school. Fall means summer is over, and that makes me sad. We have the four seasons here, and the winter is soooo long. However, I’m not completely in a fetal position in the fall. I’m a big cook, so I love the heavier, tastier fall meals such as pork, stews, roasts, vegetables, and all the spices that pair so well with fall foods. I really love decorating the house for fall….I can can get 2-3 months from different fall decor items. Finally, my husband will slow down his hectic work schedule in the fall and relax in front of all the games on TV. I love taking care of him in the afternoons, because he takes such good care of us. Fall….really a mixed bag for me.
I love back to school season even though I’ve been out of school for 13 years! I am soo ready for the fall. Although I love the warm weather, I work in NYC and as you know, its not the funnest place to be when it’s in the high 90’s with 100% humidity. I can’t wait for football, cool weather, leaves changing, and anything pumpkin flavored. Yay for Fall!!!
ahhh, I loved going back to school–especially high school and college, because I was an overinvolved-have-to-be-16-places-at-once-people-pleaser… and I got to live it up alllll the time. I loved school supplies too–still do. I think working on a college campus magnifies the feelings too… yesterday, I helped with incoming freshmen on move-in day, and instantly remembered my own move-in day to the dorm, six years ago… it’s so hokey, but it really is a neat thing, imagining all these fresh, baby-faced 18 y/o’s are going to experience in the next four years… I’m so excited for them! and envious!
oh, and I can’t wait for football. CANNOT WAIT. I can hardly stand to watch baylor football… I’m definitely an SEC girl, living in a Big 12 world.
oh, and p.s. I want new boots too. uggs and frye and maybe something else. I crave the fall leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and braving the cold in the perfect pair of boots and j. crew sweaters. LOVE.
Hated it! And now that I’m a teacher, I still (not hate) but really, really, i mean really, dread it! 🙂
I never enjoyed going back to school myself. Although I do love the fall weather. The cool windy days, the color of the fall leaves, and the smell of fall. Fall also comes with a sense of normalcy and routine as the kids all head back to school and everyone settles down from all the summer activity.
I’m the opposite-going back to school was one the highlights for me. I’m actually kind of sad that today (the day my college starts back) I’m sitting in my office instead of stopping by the union for breakfast, getting a synopsis for each class, filling up my planner with study dates, etc. I’m such a dork!
I am thrilled that fall is just around the corner and there will be football games, hot chocolate, tail gating, beautiful trees, jacket weather…I could go on and on and on!
Ooooh how I LOVE Fall annnnnnnd college football!!! It’s so stinkin’ hot down here in South Texas; I cannot wait to escape the heat and head to cooler places (Lubbock, TX – Texas Tech Football) soon!
I would say that I’m looking forward to the leaves changing, but I think I remember that those Arizona palm trees don’t change so much… 😉 I’m looking forward to sub-100 degree temperatures, (hopefully) wearing tights again soon, and for polo season to start! I also look forward to seeing HudBud pictured in some cute fall outfits!
xoxo,
Lulu
