As Hudson gets older, I start to think, “when should we start thinking about having his sibling?” I’m not in any hurry, but I do want to have a little bit of a plan. Even if it’s just a plan that says: In one year we’ll make a plan.
One thing that may help us know when to try and when not to try is this little chart.
this particular gender chart found here
In all my experience, the chart has been correct. I’ve seen different versions of the Chinese Gender Predictor Chart, but they’re always all correct with anyone that I ask. And my OBGYN even said that it was correct for her children and she planned her pregnancies around the chart.
And then I see pictures like this and I start to ache. I start thinking about babies in general.
And then I think about when I’m my mother’s age and I would love to have a daughter to take care of when she has a baby.
But babies are a lot more work than they are just cute little people in a picture, so we’re not in any hurry to add that back into our lives. And it looks like there are only a few straight months with pink boxes lined up if we are ready. Age 27 and 28 aren’t great years for trying to have a girl. (I’ll only be 27 for a couple more months)
But our little boy has been so easy and so much fun. And in the end I know that God is in control of when we conceive, who our baby is and what he or she will be like, and if it is a little girl or a little boy.
Have any of you used the gender chart when trying to conceive?
If you’ve had a baby, was the gender chart correct for you?

I’ve never used it. Never seen it, but it has me right, we have a girl.
It’s been right for my friends too, as well as me! Isn’t that just the strangest thing?
It was correct for several of my friends but wasn’t correct for us. It predicted a girl for us and we are expecting a little boy in August!
It wasn’t right for me…
I got pregnant with twin girls, in March {via IVF, my husband had cancer, and went through chemo & radiation which killed his ‘natural’ ability to have kids} at the age of 24 {but turned 25 in April}.
They were due in December, but born in August…
I have never seen this before…so interesting 🙂
oohhh! if its right this time there is some pink in my future! it was right with my son…
We didn’t plan around the chart but it was true for us. I was 26 conceived in January and our little Braxton will be here in October! I will use this for sure when we plan our next pregnancy.
Why does the chart end at 31? What about all the rest of us? I’ve never seen this before, but it looks like my window has past to plan. Now, I just hope and pray for healthy.
Looks like it was right for my mom and for my friends who have babies! You know, Evs and I always said we would be blissfully happy with 2 boys… but now I know we’ll both be sad if we don’t have a girl. Not only is our girl baby name MY FAVORITE NAME EVER, but I want to be friends with my daughter the way my mom and I are friends! But I could do without those years between 14 and 17 when girls are total evil twits to their mothers!
It was wrong for 2 out of my 3 kids!
I am pregnant with our first baby and the chart isn’t right.
It wasn’t right for me. I was 25 and we conceived in January – giving us a girl. But we had a little boy! Now, I found out I was pregnant in February, so if used that way it would’ve been correct. Oh well. I’m with you, we’re thinking about when to have another. Husband wants to get pregnant any time at all and I’m on the slower approach. I’d love a little girl next time but I’d be fine with a brother for The Boy, too!
The chart wasn’t right for me, but it is right for my niece who will be born this fall.
Interesting! It’s not correct for us. The chart has us with a boy, but I’m expecting a girl in September! I’ve had two ultrasounds that confirmed a girl so I’ll pretty surprised if the chart is correct! 🙂
Interesting! This is not true for our baby Jack – I was 25 and conceived in April. We would love to have a sweet little girl next too but it seems it’s all in God’s hands!
It was true for me! We had a boy in June and while I don’t think that we’ll necessarily plan the next one around the chart, I do think we’ll keep it in mind.
i never knew that chart existed! wow. i dont know for my next one if i would prefer a boy or girl. sometimes i think girl. sometimes i think boy. i’m going to have to check on the link because it looks like it only goes up to age 31 and i’m a little older!
Whoa, its right for both of mine too.
So weird.
I had to giggle because I was going to check and see what I could conceive if I got pregnant rightnow {not that I want to, just curious} and the chart only goes to age 31. I’m OLD! lol
It was not correct for me. I think it is ridiculous to try to “plan” the gender of your baby. Who are we to decide that? God knows the perfect addition that needs to be added to our families. I have a baby boy and would love a little girl next time, and God knows that-he knows the desires of my heart and if he wills that to happen then praise the Lord but if he wills me to have a little boy then praise the Lord as well! If I sound a little irritated it is not directed towards you, just the whole idea of “planning the gender of your child” infuriates me! I’m sure God gets a good laugh out of those that try to plan the sex of their child :)!
I am pregnant with our 1st child right now and it was right for us! We are expecting a little girl in October 🙂
Isn’t it funny to actually think about a plan this time around? I know it was for us since Brody was such a surprise!
And the chart was wrong for both of mine! 🙂 So if we have a third I just know I will have the opposite of what it says! Ha!
Nope, it is not correct for us. I conceived our daughter last August when I was 28…so no go on that one. But, regardless of gender, I was just thrilled to have a healthy happy baby!
According to that chart, it was right for me! I was 29 and conceived in July and had my sweet Walkie!
Ahh, I love this! I just looked up a few of my friends and it is accurate for all of them!
Nope wrong for us. I was 25 and concieved in March and we have a little girl
PS – The chart goes past 31 if you click on the link! 🙂
This chart doesn’t work for my brother or I by my rough-ish estimations of what month we were likely conceived (it doesn’t work for my brother at all, not even with a little give or take on conception date), and my coworker says it doesn’t work for her and her two kids. But maybe it’s that we didn’t calculate my mom and my coworker’s Chinese ages?
I’ve read that the most effective way of having a hand in your child’s sex is a little more…graphic. And has to do with the speed at which the sea men (trying to throw the Google bots off here!) travel. Boy ones swim faster, so if you want a boy, you’d want your partner to…release them…as close as possible to your c. If you want a girl, you’d want your partner to…release them…as far away as possible. I hope I’m explaining that correctly. Anyway. The point of…release…is what is thus far proven to have the most impact. So I hear! Not that we will be testing that out any time soon!
It was right the first time. Age 22 got pregnant in April – TRIPLET GIRLS!! Not right the 2nd time…..got pregnant at 26 in December with a boy! But do know of many people who have used it and it was right on!
Not correct for us! We are expecting a beautiful boy in August, which according to the chart should have been a little girl. I think this is more entertaining than anything!
I do feel the need to comment on this one. It’s fun to think you can “plan” a gender, but based on the 21 comments it was Correct for 8 people, 2 people did not say yes or no, and it was Incorrect for 11 people. I would love to have a healthy boy someday so my husband can experience having a son like his dad did, but I trust that God will bless us with the child meant for our family. I think its funny that people think they can plan something like this!
I didn’t use the gender chart but looking at it now, it was correct. So funny!
It was right the first time (predicting boy), and it was wrong the second time (predicting girl). I have a 9 year old boy and a 1 year old boy!
I love these sorts of things!! It wasn’t correct for us with this one – I (was/still am till Tues!) 28 when Trey was convieved and that was in November. I know A LOT of people that this is right for though!
And thanks for your comment on my 5 S’s post! We joke that Dr. Karp is “the baby whisperer” lol 🙂 smart man!!!
Hmmm very interesting! We are trying to have a baby and if we were successful this month then according to this chart we will be having a boy. Otherwise it’ll be all girls for the rest of the year! Really I’m fine either way, I would like some of both!
I think this is so much fun!! It seems to have worked for my niece and nephews. I may not plan by this, but I’d be interested to see if it would work for my future children!
Thanks Erin for posting!!
It wasn’t correct for us, but I’m going to give it a try the next time around! 🙂
Wow! That’s crazy! It’s right on for both of my girls!
Interesting. It was not correct for my first son. I am due next week with another boy and that is correct. Maybe we will check it out if/when we have a 3rd and want a girl!
it’s right for me, but not my best friend
This chart wasn’t right for us. But it was right for some of my friends. I guess when you think about it, it does have a 50/50 chance of being right 🙂
Lawd, your dumb.
This is so cute! I checked with all the ladies in my office (slow day here) and everyone says it’s correct for them! So Funny!
It isn’t right for me – but that doesn’t make it any less fun to try to anticipate until you find out!!! Whether it’s finding out via ultrasound or waiting until the big day – trying out all of the old wives tails can be great fun! 🙂
-E
I think stuff like this is fun but…it was wrong for all three of my kids!
I’ve never seen this and I work in a high risk OB office! I love it 🙂 I will now be figuring out everyone I know, lol.
It was wrong for the last 4 people I figured out. I have no idea why the chart is about Mom’s age when the gender is 100% determined by the sperm. 🙂
It wasn’t right for me… the chart predicted ‘boy’, but we have a bubbly, beautiful baby girl! I’ve actually heard that what Law School Wife said is a better predictor for the gender of your baby… and when I’ve talked about it with friends, that seems to be a more accurate approach :).
The chart was inaccurate for me as well! I’ll be having a baby girl in September. You seem like such a wonderful mommy. In fact I have been stowing away lots of tips you’ve been giving in your blog…please keep it up.
On another note I remember a blog post you did about planning the right time for kid number 2. I’m not sure if I said it then, but I’ll say it now….I do not feel it is selfish to plan according to a time that’s right for you! We were trying to get pregnant and had planned birthday trip with friends and family to celebrate my big 30. I remember thinking what if I’m pregnant by then?? I knew I would cope and still have a wonderful time, but at the same time a little voice was saying maybe this isn’t the right time…I felt so guilty and selfish for even thinking that way. Now others are telling me the “perfect” gap between kids are 3 years so I should start planning accordingly if I want another one. Whoa–not sure I even want another one…also my sister and I are a whopping 6 years a part and I think our relationship is “perfect.”
Sorry to rant 😉
Good luck with your planning…hope the chart works in your favor.
Didn’t predict correctly for us. You just never know . . . could be girl or boy, easy or very difficult, have colic not have colic, sleep through the night at 3 months or not until 9 months. You just never know and that is part of the wonder and excitement of it all and what makes each sweet child so special and unique.
I am due to have our sweet little boy today! And, yes, that’s what the chart predicted 🙂
It was right for all four of mine! 🙂
It was accurate for our first! I think this is fun! I want to try all the old wives’ tales this time to see which “work”! I know of the needle or pencil trick. Are there any more?
I’ve never seen this before, but it was right for me too! My sister just found out she’s pregnant, and according to this she’ll have a girl…we’ll see!!!
This is so interesting! I’ll be 32 this year and we’ll probably try start our family early next year. Hmmm!!! BOOKMARKING!
That’s an interesting chart – I’ve never seen one! I got pregnant at 29 in September, and we had a girl…even though the chart says “boy.”
Your OB told you she planned her pregnancies around this chart?! Why would she tell her patients that??
It was right for all 3 of mine!
And good grief people, didn’t your mama teach you “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”??
Did you see the predication of Bethenny’s baby’s gender last night on her new show? They used a needle and thread to see if the needle would spin in a circle or a straight line. I thought it was pretty interesting! And it turned out to be right! I’ll find out if your gender chart is spot-on or off in August! 🙂
It wasn’t right for me; Mac was conceived in January when I was 27. And he’s definitely a boy! 🙂
k if this thing is right I’m having a girl which is what i’ve already been thinking this munchkin is. we’ll see if it’s right in 10 days.!!!
Nope, not right for us. We had a boy, when the chart says it should have been a girl!
I checked the chart when I was pregnant with my first, and it said boy – but we had a girl! One of my husband’s clients is a retired ob-gyn and told him we have to have a boy since he has four sisters and I have three. After he fixed her cable problem, she sat him down and explained the best way to conceive a boy…hopefully it’ll work. Our fingers are crossed, but even it’s another girl we’d welcome her with open arms! <3
Maybe we'll try on a month that says we'll have a girl, ha!
The chart was right for me, prob will use it next go around! What could it hurt? Good luck with the decision of when to try, I have a 15 month old and still can’t decide if next spring is right or not? Love your blog!
That chart isn’t right for me. The chinese chart wasn’t either!! Maybe it is a fluke, but I’m sure that is was! I love my baby girl! 🙂
It was correct for both my boys, but it was wrong with Lizzy. It was also wrong for my mom when pregnant wtih me. AND, I have a friend with FOUR boys and 2 of those should have been girls based on the chart..
You are NOT dumb! It’s good to have somewhat of a ‘plan’ or idea for your future. It doesn’t mean it will necessarily happen, but go for it! The chart I looked at when I was pregnant was correct (boy). But this chart isn’t. I wish they were all the same chart! Good luck in planning. I know I’ll keep an eye on this when it’s time for another little one.
Oh my word, this is crazy! I feel like it’s up to the man (hence the X/Y chromosome thing) but this is fascinating that the woman’s body really has anything to do with it! And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t do a little planning of my own during the course of reading your blog 🙂
Love that chart! So fun, but didn’t work for us. Our son was conceived naturally, but I was just sure by the Chinese predictor charts that he was going to be a girl! At least we have ultrasounds so I knew he was a boy early on 🙂
I’ve never seen it, but it was wrong in my case. I have twin girls and it showed me as boys.
Hi Erin,
It’s Erin. I’ve never seen that chart, but Gavin was conceived in February 2008 and he is undoubtedly all boy, so the chart was not correct in his case. It says girl.
Fun though!
Yes, I used that exact same site you linked to, and it was CORRECT! 🙂
Omigosh…I have two kids and that chart is right for both! Girl and then Boy!
I love this! I printed it off to refer to in the future!
I’d guess that the chart has about 50% accuracy. 🙂 It’s still fun though– I’m excited to see that my chances of having a girl are HIGH for next year, when my husband I will TTC.
We didn’t use the chart and have 2 boys–one “agreed” with the chart and the other didn’t. However, we knew we were destined to have all boys because my hubby is one of five boys and there are no nieces whatsoever on his side. We jokingly say “No girls allowed!” in our family except by marriage. however, I would have LOVED to have had a girl nonetheless! There are exceptions to rules out there, right?
I totally have looked this up on thebump.com and it said we were having a boy. I called Matt and told him the website said it was 90% accurate…and as you may assume…he didn’t seem too convinced 🙂 He said it was more like 50% 🙂 Guess we’ll see!
it wasnt correct for me. i was 31 in may when i conceived and we had a boy. i heard you have to go by your lunar(?) age and not your actual age to get the correct reading.
That picture of Hudson is precious! The chart is wrong for me at this point, although I am due in another 2 weeks so who knows what will happen. For the baby’s sake, I sure hope the chart is wrong otherwise I will have a little boy in all pink 🙂
It was right for us. I am so glad our first was a little boy (I was hoping for less high maintenance less drama 🙂 ) We also want to have another child in a few years and while I love having a boy (I would be in so much trouble with a girl…all those cute outfits and pretty bows and shoes, it never ends!) the only thing that makes me sad about a boy is I feel like they grow up, get married and then sort of migrate into the bride’s family (at least that’s how it has been with my friends and boys in our family) and the thought of “losing” my boy makes me sad. My husband says I’m crazy. HA!
According to that chart, I should have had 3 girls and a boy, but I have four boys. As a friend of mine said when I had a SURPRISE boy and was convinced the whole 9 months he was a girl: “You get what you get.”
Interesting, I’m pregnant with our first (due in eight weeks) and we are having a girl but it says it should be boy. Of course, I guess we’ll see if they got it right on the ultrasound. Gosh, that poor boy would have far too much pink!!
That’s so neat! It’s fun to think that something like gender can be planned, but that chart’s actually wrong for almost everyone I know! Oh well… 😀
Nope — not for me.
Umm, it is correct for us! Isn’t that crazy!!!
Becky,
If you’re going to call someone “dumb” you should probably use the correct grammar when doing do. It should be “you’re” dumb, not “your” dumb.
TOTALLY FREAKING ME OUT! Although I’m not exactly sure when we conceived either of our kids, I can count back 9 months, and it’s spot on for both! So weird.
I have never seen such a thing. How interesting.
hehe, fun but not right for my little girl and like the above poster mentioned I’m guessing 50% accuracy, hehe.. However I have heard that depending on when you have sex around the time you ovulate can have some impact on the sex of your baby. If you have sex leading up to ovulation, the sperm that survive for up to 5 days are more likely to be female as those sperm have a longer life than the male. However, the male sperm are faster swimmers, so are more likely to reach the egg if you have sex exactly when you are ovulating. Again, not sure of the accuracy but this is what I’ve heard!
This chart is right for me, we have a boy on the way!!!
In my own personal little study, this chart has been right 49 out of 50 times with friends and family…and it was right for our sweet miracle girl that was born in February. Too funny!
Maggie has got it right. That’s the only way to have *some* influence on gender!
it’s not right for me or a friend of mine. she is due again in nov and was very interested in this chart though!
Wrong for us! But, fun to check it out. Thanks for posting!
Like some others are saying, maybe it’s about 50% right? Because my two girls suggest that’s the case. . .the chart would have been right about Mia, but wrong about Eve.
It’s also funny that you’ve got a couple of comments suggesting that people are dumb to think that the mother has anything to do with gender determination. Yes, it’s absolutely true that the sperm carries the gender information. However, just a little bit of research will tell you that (as someone said above): 1. WHEN you have sex in relation to ovulation can play a big role in determining which variety of sperm makes it to the egg (male sperm moves faster but dies more quickly, female sperm moves slower but survives longer, if I remember my biology class correctly. Eh, it could be the other way around, it has been 10 years since college biology), and 2. The environment of the mother’s body has a big impact of which gender of sperm survives. I don’t remember the way this one works, so you’d have to google it, but there has been research showing that if the mother’s body is more acidic, one gender of sperm survives better, and if the mother’s body is more alkaline, the other one survives better. And the relative acidity of your body can be changed (a tiny bit, but enough to affect things, apparently) by the foods you eat. I’ve had friends get pregnant with the gender they wanted by following these guidelines. Maybe just a coincidence, but worth a try if you adamently want one gender or the other.
The point is, commenters who think it’s ignorant to think that the mother has anything to do with gender need to do a little more research. 😉
My husband and I decided to let the gender of our baby be a surprise so I looked at these charts all the time while I was pregnant trying to figure out what I thought I was having. According to this chart, it did not predict correctly. I was 25 when we conceived last May, but we did not have a girl, we had a beautiful little boy in January.
It worked for us and we also used this book that I swear by in “trying” for a boy or girl…we just did it for fun – it was a little scientiic and involved charting my temps and stuf it it brought us a beautiful baby girl as hoped after our Son. God then blessed us with another Son…icing on an already wonderful cake! Try it you have nothing to lose!
I think these charts are interesting, though they’ve been incorrect for my friends. I think the disheartening thing is the notion of some commenters that you can “plan” pregnancy with these. We’ve all only got a 20% shot at ANY baby in ANY cycle. I “planned” to get pregnant three cycles ago, and still am not pregnant. Plenty of women try for many months, if not years. You can’t treat this chart as anything but something fun, and it’s irresonsible to think that just because you want a girl you can try in a certain month. I may be a buzz kill, but this is the kind of ignorance that irks me.
I had never heard of it before I got pregnant with my son, but after someone told me I looked it up and it was right! When we decided to have our second, I used it to help “plan” having a girl. I mean, really, if it’s wrong what’s the worst that could happen – I get another boy :)!
Anyway, when we used it to “try for a girl” we got our girl! And this time we used it to “try for another boy” and it worked again! We would have been thrilled with the outcome no matter what, but I love that we have a little girl sandwiched in between boys!
We’re still deciding about number 4, but I know that if we decide it’s right for us it will happen in the next two years. I want to be done with pregnancies by 30, and my husband wants to be done by the time he’s 40 which is in 2 years (yes, we’re 10 years apart)!
Was wrong for us :)… I’m 27 and got pregnant in February. We’re having a girl. Good luck!
Awww according to the chart, I should have been a boy
Chart wasn’t right for us… we conceived in January when I was 26 and we have a baby girl!
It wasn’t right for us either. It said boy and we just found out it’s a girl!!
I have two girls and the chart is correct. I never used anything like this when trying to get pregnant. We also left the gender a delivery-room surprise. My husband got to tell me the second time just after they delivered my daughter. It was a great moment that will not happen again. Priceless! Especially since he said, “girl. i think.” 🙂
I had never seen this chart before! It definitely made for great conversation with some of my friends to see if it worked for them or not. I don’t forsee us using it to “plan” a gender, we’ll leave that to the Lord, but it will be really interesting to see if it ends up being correct when we do have children! Thank you for sharing!
This chart wasn’t right for us. We conceived in February when I was 27. We’re expecting a little girl in November! However, the Chinese gender chart shown on The Bump did show a girl.
Just had to commit on your post. My daughter, who is a nurse practitioner, used the “gender swaying” book to try to conceive a boy. She found out on Friday that it is a boy! You can google “Gender Swaying” to read more about it. It is very safe.
How sad that many Chinese people probably use these charts to avoid having girls….
This chart is pretty fun – I am intrigued! And secretly happy as I look forward, based on the color I see… 😉
OK those charts have been wrong on my last two pregnancies…. but this last time we tried for a boy (yes read a book about it ) and we are having a boy! 🙂 I can give you the info because there are ways to try for boy or girl. Ultimately God decides but no harm in helping your chances one way or another!
For me, the chart is not correct. I was 30, conceived in Feb and am having a boy… doubly-confirmed at the last US. 🙂
Hey Erin!! It was wrong for 2 of mine, right for 1. I’ve heard it has to be based on the mother’s “lunar age”. Not sure what that means but you could google it. I think time of conception is the next best way to plan for a particular gender. But GOOD-LUCK!!
It was right for my sister, but not for 1 of my girlfriends. Hmmm, I will have to remember this cause we find out what we’re having in August and the chart says a boy for me 🙂
I have never seen this! Thank you for sharing. I’m not even dating anyone, but now I can plan accordingly.
It wasn’t right for my friend who just had her baby, but it’s a fun game!
If you start to see a traffic spike in “gender calendar” and “chinese gender” searches, don’t you worry… It’s just me trying to find this chart time after time, do a little referencing… 😉
Again with referencing your old blog posts 🙂 The Chinese gender gods say blue…
