What is your dream job?
The question isn’t “What is your dream job based on your skill set and your college major?” This isn’t “what is the best job you can possibly have with a degree in speech communication?”
I’m talking about, if you could get paid to do anything in the whole world what would it be?
For years, my fantasy has been to be a back-up singer. Ideally, I’d sing back-up for Elton John or James Taylor. I’d get to sing the greatest songs ever written, but I wouldn’t be front and center wondering “does this outfit make my butt look fat?” I always sing along with the back-up singers when I hear a song and the harmonies are my favorite parts to sing.
I would wear all black and sway back and forth with two other people and harmonize to “Carolina In My Mind” or “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”
I wouldn’t have to deal with the paparazzi because, let’s face it, no one cares about back-up singers. You get the fun of the tour without the pressure of the fame.
And maybe I could even sing back-up for Carrie Underwood! On the other hand, if they ever did background checks after I auditioned, and they found my blog, they’d discover my huge girl crush on Carrie and decide that I shouldn’t be allowed to be her back-up singer.
So what’s your fantasy job?
Kaleigha says
Stylist. Hands down. Or the editor of a fashion magazine.
Ris says
Travel writer. Getting paid to travel and write about it? Bliss.
Lauren says
Party planner. I would love it. I’m planning The Boy’s 1st birthday party now and I’m having the best time.
VABelle says
Host of a Food Network Show. I am not a chef my any means. But I would love to spend the day in a gorgeous kitchen, with any kitchen tool I could ever want at my fingertips, chatting away to a camera while cooking and tasting a delicious meal. Now that I think about it, I would be willing to do that job for free even!
Lauren says
Ooo…second reply but I have to agree with Ris. Travel writer would be awesome as well.
duchessbelle says
I’ve always wanted to be one of the princesses at Disney World. Non fantasy job things like heat of the costumes aside, of course 🙂
Lauren Kelly says
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this because I am ALWAYS telling people that if I could get paid to travel I would quit what I’m doing in a heartbeat and never look back. I love to travel and would be awesome to see the world and get paid doing it!!! 🙂
Anne says
Advice columnist. Not nearly as glamorous as a travel writer, though that’d be a close second!
Sarah says
Supermodel! Gisele style!
melissa says
A food or book critic, for sure! Not much makes me happier than eating, reading and writing. It would be a fabulous life!
Karissa says
A personal shopper!
Katie says
oo oo can I just steal some of the ones above? Disney Princess? YES Please! Travel Writer? YES YES!
Jen Maltba says
What a cute blog idea Erin! If I could do anything at all and money did not matter, then i would be a teacher’s assistant! I love working with children and probably should have been a teacher rather than working in marketing…but I think a teacher’s assistant would be fun b/c you get to work with the children, teach some, grade papers, go on field trips, make them feel special, yet you do not have the responsibility of testing. Plus it is a rather good schedule!
Angel says
I would love to be a country singer!!
Birdie says
I want to run the Library at the Smithsonian. I dream about this job! They were actually hiring for it a few months ago but I’m about a year and a half away from my Master’s in Library Science LOL!! I know I’m a nerd for that! So for my “Fun” job, I think I would like to restore Victorian houses 🙂
Jennifer says
i love to harmonize too!!
one of my favorite things….
my dream job…would to own and run a cupcake shop!!
Kim says
What a great topic!!! I like the travel writer idea! I had never thought of that. If I had to stay local, I would be a dog walker. Get to play with furry pups AND get my exercise everyday? Sign me up. Another option would be a professional organizer. Once I got my own house in order, I’d love to help others get their places together and organized!
lovinafarmboy says
I’m with Jennifer. I would love to spend my days in a bakery. I used to work as a cookie decorator, it was the most fun I’ve ever had working. I’d also like to start a doggy friendly shopping center. It’d be nice to do a little shopping and walking around with the pup.
Jen Watts says
Great Post! After reading everyone elses mine now seems kind of lame….though I know it would be stressful and the pay not too great I just want to own a small clothing boutique..not too glamorous, but fashion is my passion and a new outfit always puts a smile on a girl’s face 🙂
Gemma says
I’m with VABelle! I would love to host a food network show! I always used to pretend I was being filmed while cooking and talk all about what I was doing, making, etc.
Megan says
I would either be a stylist for a huge store like Saks or NM OR I would want to be their social media director tweeting and facebooking for their store. Also, I would want to open my own store and be the buyer for my store.
Brittany says
I would LOVE to have Samantha Brown (from the Travel Channel)’s job. Getting to scout out new places, travel all the time, eat great food and try out the spa services? Yes, please!
And this one is cheesy, but I’d love to be the person who chooses the music to accompany morning show segments, like on the Today Show. For example, if the segment was about new cell phones, the music person would pick “Telephone” by Lady Gaga. Or if it was about Internet creeps, it would be “Somebody’s Watching Me.” I always thought that’d be a fun, cool job to have!
Lindsey says
I’d love David Leibovitz’s job. Living in Paris, taking people around to chocolate shops, trying wines, and making ice cream all while speaking French? Parfait!
Jenn says
Hahaha. Love this. A girl I went to high school with did sing back up for Carrie on the Carnival Tour. She also performed FANCY during a high school talent show (a performance she’ll probably never live down).
My dream job is to own a clothing store with my sister. We already have it all planned out. One side would be preppy (like me) they other would be more indie/trendy (like her). There would be alters in the back to Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair (our fashion idols). And it would be called soeur. Now we just need an investor.
Julie says
Commissioner of the NFL! All football, all the time, and getting paid for it. Sign me up!
emily says
Did you see Carrie last night on Idol? Gorgeous. But her backup singer was just a beautiful!!
Ally says
Oh my gosh, I have so many “dream jobs”! But, my ultimate dream job (along with many others it seems!) is travel writer. Or photographer. I am not a talented photographer by any means, but, my bff is and my mom was, and I so love the idea of it. Traveling all over, documenting it all? Heaven.
Rhonda says
I just want to be my own boss. I have several business ideas and will definitely be doing at least one of them. the most “fun” idea i have right now is a candy shop on main street in my small town’s quaint downtown area. not just any candy shop, but one that would also set up a candy buffet at your event and have a party space in our shop.
I’d also love to be a personal shopper.
Jenn Smith says
I think mine is really odd but I’ve always loved kids. My dream job would be working on Sesame Street. Don’t know in what capacity but I just want to be on that street.

My dream job is to be a syndicated cartoonist… I am working on it! =)
AEOT says
CIA Agent- just like Sydney Bristol in Alias and all the men in the spy novels I read. Why? Who knows, but I’ve always wanted to do it. If that doesn’t work, I’d love to host the Today Show. I love early mornings, I love the news, and you’d get to meet everyone!
Natalie says
Oh, I think I’d love to be a party planner. I have planned many charity events and I love it – stress and all.

I adore Elton John! Great choice! 🙂

Great Post idea…..
My dream job would be to work for ESPN. I would LOVE to cover all the sporting events around the country and the world for that matter. My idea of fun would be to cover college football on Saturday evenings or afternoons and be right there in the thick of it all. Erin Andrews has the BEST job and I sure wish that it was me!!!!

Great southern writer of my generation. Bestsellers though, so I could have lots of disposable income.
Amy says
I have ALWAYS wanted to be a back-up singer!!! I would never want to be a front-and-center celebrity type, but I love to sing and dance and it would be so cool to travel the world.
Allison says
My dream job changes all the time. I’d love to own a clothing and/or housewares store, work for a magazine as an editor or art director, be a photographer, write a book, be an interior designer’s assistant, design make-up bags (random, I know!), and the list goes on and on!

Maggie says
I have always dreamed of owning a bookstore. To be surrounded by books and people all day? Perfection!
Jessica says
I think my dream job would be a children’s librarian. As nerdy as this may sound, I think I would love it. I enjoyed reading as a child (and still do today) and can remember summer story time spent at the local library. This always included kool-aid and ring (butter) cookies. I can still remember my favorite children’s books and am tempted to buy them….for myself…just to have.
Erin says
If I could get paid for being a stay at home mom, I wouldn’t have to go back to work this summer!
Kate says
So easy… BROADWAY!
Candace says
Ohhh…this is fun…back in the day my dream job was to be a back up dancer in music videos….I love to dance…then maybe I would get to go on tour and becomes bff with the singer 🙂 nowadays…I would love to get paid for staging homes….I had so much fun when we sold our last house and I staged it to sale….and then I would tie in my love to redo old furniture and I could use my pieces in the home….so fun!
Lindsay says
I would be a SHAM. Or a travel writer! Or, I’ve always wanted to open a daycare…but for little, little kids. I’d pair up with a church preschool and take care of infants…then I’d ship them off once they reached preschool age! If I had the money, I’d do it tomorrow! (You and I are on the same blogging page today!)

Fortunately, I”m lucky enough that my dream job will eventually be my reality (fingers crossed that all works out!). In my perfect world, I’d be a pediatric infectious disease doctor 2 days a week and spend the rest of my time with my family. Someday … someday … someday … must finish residency and find husband first! 🙂

Professional poker player – especially if money wasn’t an object 😉
CAwife says
I would LOVE to be a children’s book author more than anything! However, my more realistic dream job is to get into graphic design and own a stationary store where I design my own stuff, and sell amazing little gifts. I’m pretty sure there’s no way to actually make money doing that though?!!?

i think it might be to be a movie reviewer.
i LOVE going to movies, but rather than just review, i’d like to lead a discussion. and get paid for it!!!
Charla says
EASY!!! I dream of playing Eponine in Les Mis on Broadway. I also would love to own a “Children’s Conservatory”–art studio / music lessons / boutique / story time / birthday party venue. Maybe someday…when my kids are gorwn and I have more time and money!
Sarah S. says
Late to the game on this one, but I want to be ERIN ANDREWS! So envious of her job…and her fabulous hair!

I’d simply be the next Mia Hamm. Or even better than her! Then when I was old, you know 33 and not able to bend my knees anymore!, I would be a sports broadcaster. Sigh…
mint juleps & magnolias says
I’d be a patent lawyer for Apple. Seriously. Number one wish.
Also, I’d love to be on a soap opera, a college basketball reporter (an actual color commentator, not sideline), or a writer with a column or a couple of published novels.
Nicole says
Oh, where do I start? Um…I’d love to be a cupcake shop owner. I’d love to take photographs of people who can’t afford it, I’d love to walk the same ground as Mother Theresa & lastly….star in RENT on Broadway 🙂
Kari says
I would definitely want to be a talk show host. I love Ellen and Kelly Ripa!! It would be so much fun!! Funny thing, on my last day of 6th grade, my teacher secretly wrote a note to each kid in my class about what she thought we would all be doing as a career. Mine said that I would be a talk show host, and I was furious that she didn’t write that I would be a veterinarian. Makes me laugh now!!!
