what are we up to?

It was quite the eventful weekend, so there’s lots to catch you up on.

1. Todd’s last day of work at his firm was Friday. I couldn’t mention any of this to you until his last day was over, but he and two other attorneys are starting their own firm on Monday. We’re all very excited and I am particularly proud of my husband. There’s really something to be said for knowing exactly what kind of work you want to do and going after it. Last week was a scary week as we were both writing letters of resignation. For a brief few hours,Β neither of us were on anyone’s payroll. His first day is Monday and he is so excited!

2. My parents flew in on Friday and went with us to Charlotte for a dear friend’s wedding. My folks came up to keep Hudson while Todd and I attended all of the wedding activities. I was doing a reading in the ceremony, which I’d never done before, and was a bit scared. I’ve sung in lots of weddings and I’ve been a bridesmaid a few times, but I was much more nervous about this reading. I wore my pink Stuart Weitzman rehearsal dinner shoes from our wedding, and was a little nervous about walking in stilettos for the first time in months. Taking a long walk in stilettos across a marble platform– hoping and praying to God that I would not bust it and ruin the ceremony. All was fine.

I have to mention a wedding guest who showed up in a white dress. I am obviously not mentioning her by name or describing her dress any further than saying it was white. I just don’t understand that. Even if the dress has a little embellishment of color at the very bottom– it’s still white. There should be one person in white at the wedding. Period. Can’t you just find a different dress for that one day? Sheesh.

Hudson went 8 hours during the night between feedings thanks to his KK and Poppie. My parents kept him in their room and let Todd and me sleep through the night. I’m hopeful in these next couple of nights that Hudson will catch on that this is the new routine and stop waking up. This is such a huge accomplishment.

3. Hudson is doing lots of smiling. And if he knew how to laugh he’d be laughing, too. It’s so much fun! He tries to say what we say and just makes the same types of sounds and it’s such a blast to watch him learn and discover his little voice. He’s officially too big for 3 month sizes and is wearing 6 month clothes now– just days before his 2 month birthday. Little monster.

4. I just have to say that I am so happy for my beautiful friend and her wonderful husband. She found the perfect guy for her and I knew it the second I met him. I love to watch them interract and there is something so special about watching one of your best friends commit her life to someone. I’m completely jealous that they’ll be in Bora Bora for the next 10 days.

5. We leave for the beach tomorrow. I’ll be blogging from the beach– I’m not exactly in tip top bathing suit shape, so my time on the beach will be limited. So I’ll check in with y’all a few times next week so you can see what Huddy’s first time on the beach is like!

Congrats to both you and Todd for having the courage to move forward doing the things you love in life!

And ICK, people wearing white at weddings is my BIGGEST etiquette pet-peeve of all time… an especially sore subject since my Mother in Law wore ivory to our wedding. Awesome.

Wow! I’m a lawyer as well, and I know so many of us young associates dream of starting our own firm. That is wonderful!

On the other hand- white to a wedding!! Get out of town! Actually, a dear friend wore a cute dress that was a light taupe on bottom, and white on top to my wedding. I thought that was a tad too much (of course I was on cloud nine so I didn’t really care, but still).

Sounds like you guys had a fun weekend! Very exciting for Todd and your family!

wearing white to a wedding…ewww…very strange. I wore a dress to a wedding once that was black on the top and white on the bottom with a black print and I even questioned it!

    Have fun at the beach!

So many exciting transitions for you! My husband is also part of his own company and it has been the best move for him and our family imaginable. It makes our relationship so much better knowing that he is content and still challenged with his work life. Have a great vacation, what a great little man sleeping longer, its like heaven!

Congrats to Todd! That is such a big accomplishment! I know you are going to have so much fun at the beach! And I had no idea that you were a singer, very cool!

Congrats to Todd – that’s definitely a dream for many, but not all of us have the courage to try it out. Good for him, and for you for encouraging him.

And – you BOTH are resigning? How fabulous – but I must have missed your big news while I was away. Off to read your recent archives . . .

I went to a wedding that was at one of those “wedding halls” where several weddings can be going on at the same time and we all shared a bathroom. There was a girl at the other wedding that was wearing a long white prom-ish dress that we all thought was the bride at first… um… nope… just an incredibly RUDE and/or ignorant guest. Totally one of my biggest pet-peeves!

  8. The wife says

Went to a wedding once where one of the readers had on white! Couldn’t believe it. Didn’t help matters that she had slept with the groom back in the day and had always carried a torch for him through the years even though they were “just friends”. hmmm….was someone doing some wishful thinking that day?

Couldn’t believe when I read that your Hubby ventured out to a new job today. So did my Hubby! It’s been a year in the works. Lots of talks, thinking and prayer has gone into this venture for us as it is a start up company as well. Yesterday we kept joking about how he was unemployed for those few hours. Hope we all receive great successes!

    Hey Erin,

I am a somewhat new reader of your blog and I love it! You are a talented writer. Just wanted to say that I totally agree with you on the white dress thing at a wedding. I. Don’t. Get. It.

I once went to a wedding of a friend whose new mother-in-law WORE A WHITE DRESS. Dear Lord. I wanted to strangle her.

    Have fun at the beach!

I cannot imagine putting on a dress like that to attend a wedding… are you kidding?! I’m also wondering if we have the same pink Stuart Weitzmans – are yours bright patent peeptoes with bows on the toes? They are my FAVES.

White to a wedding is such a no-no! Glad the reading and Hudson went well this weekend! πŸ™‚ Yay for you guys have the jobs you love ….very important! Have fun at the beach πŸ™‚ (jealous!)

Wearing white to wedding is cry for attention or an obvious sign that you have no manners. It’s not acceptible. My MIL wore ivory and so did I. WHY????

A cry for attention I tell you.

I love your blog, I’ve been reading for a while but never commented! Hudson is adorable, congrats! Four people wore white to my wedding a year ago, and one of them was our minister’s wife! She is young and southern and should have known better. I never thought it would bother me till it actually happened at my wedding!

How completely exciting for you guys!! Yay for the new job opportunity!

I was in a friend’s wedding last year, and one of the other bridesmaid’s little sister wore white to the wedding, and I’m pretty sure I stared at her just a little bit for not understanding that part of wedding etiquette.

    Have fun at the beach!

congrats on Todd’s move. I saw it in the paper yesterday. My husband left the same firm a few weeks ago. Like you said, scary big changes but exciting at the same time. Best of luck to you both!

  17. says

good luck in the new journey you and hubby are going to embark (full-time mommy and wife/owner of a firm).

i once went to a wedding where the groom’s cousin wanted to be bridesmaid so bad that she went and got an almost identical dress the actual bridesmaids were wearing. we called her the lost one.

    have fun at the beach!

  18. says

    Hey Erin!

I found you on Kelly’s Korner, and have been following you for a few months now, but just wanted to finally say hey and that I love reading your blog, and little Hudson is such a cutie! I live in the surrounding Charlotte area, and I have an 8 month old son named Ryder, so I can definitely relate to a lot of the situations you are going through as a new mommy! Yay for not falling, while wearing the stilettos at the wedding!

Well, hope to talk to you again,

    Laura

My mother in law wore a white gown to our wedding.

yeah…it was very pretty, but really? People are still talking about it 3 years later!

  22. says

I am sure you will look just fine in your bathing suit! Two people wore white-ish outfits to my wedding, and I was a bit peeved. both on his side. His uncle wore a white suit and his mother’s friend wore a shimmery, cream pants outfit. I let it go, but you are right, find something else to wear. It’s just rude.

  23. says

Someone wore white to my wedding and then had the courage to say to me the next morning at brunch that she was sorry!?! She said that “she didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to wear white to a wedding”…what girl doesn’t know that?!?

Hope you’re having fun at the beach with your adorable family! Lucky girl!

Hey! I’ve been off the internet for awhile and just read about your decision to be a stay-at-home mom. I think that’s great πŸ™‚ It’s not for everyone and I think it’s a personal choice that each person has to make, but it was encouraging for me to read. It’s something that we want for me when we eventually have our own child, and even though I know that we’ll be able to afford it, it still seems intimidating. Putting a career on hold seems like a tough decision for me right now, and I’m glad that I don’t have to face it yet! I’m looking forward to reading about how you manage. I’m sure that there will be ups and downs, but I’m confident that you’ll be great at it!

  25. Sara says

    Your son is gorgeous!

I’m usually just a blog stalker, but I just had to chime in about wearing white to a wedding. In summer many sundresses on store racks are white with bands and/or areas of color. It is also a very flattering color, so many people already own something in a shade of white. I think as long as its shorter and can’t be mistaken for a bridal gown, it’s fine. The guests that come in the white prom dresses should be escorted to the front to announce to everyone why they wanted to look like the bride!
