baby questions: answered

Some of you have left comments asking questions in some of my earlier posts, so I thought I’d take some time to answer them.

Where did the names John, Matthew, and Hudson come from? And why are you calling your baby by a name that isn’t his first name?

Yes, the dreaded, “You named your baby what?” questions. I’ve always loved four names for a boy, so that’s why we gave him four names.

John is the name of my cousin who passed away last summer. He was Fiona’s (our dog) original “dad” and he was very very special to me. I don’t believe in coincidences, so I think God knew exactly what he was doing with this one. My cousin passed away on June 5, 2008 and baby Hudson was born on June 5, 2009. Coincidence? No way.

Matthew is Todd’s first name and Hudson is my dad’s name and was his mother’s maiden name. I’ve always wanted to name a baby “Hudson” because I just love it and feel fortunate that we have such a wonderful family name in our family. Not all family names are so great!

We put the name Hudson is the middle because it just sounds better. People may get confused and call him John, but we’ll just correct them. My dad goes by Hudson, but that isn’t his first name. My husband goes by Todd, but that isn’t his first name. They both swear to me that calling the baby by one of his middle names will not cause any damage.

Do you normally have blood pressure issues like the issues you had with low blood pressure during your delivery?

No. I had completely normal blood pressure before pregnancy and during pregnancy. I am not anemic. Because I lost so much blood during the delivery, I’m now on iron pills. The low blood pressure right after I received the Bolus drip was due to the fact that I had no eaten or had anything to drink since 9:00 p.m. the night before and my body was dehydrated.

What kind of outfit is Hudson wearing in the first photos of him? Where did you get it?

Hudson is wearing a little Feltman Bros. day gown. It is newborn size, so we had to hurry and get him in it before he’s too big to wear it! We purchased it and most of his clothes at Hip Hip Hooray in Dallas. It’s pretty much the best kids clothes store ever.

Where did you get your crib? Where did you get the rug? Was the bedding custom made?

The crib and dresser/ changing table came from a company called Newport Cottages. They have beautiful children’s furniture. My mom is an approved designer with their company, so we were able to order directly through them. They do, however, sell some of their furniture on Posh Tots, I believe.

The rug came from Pottery Barn. (big PB, not PB Kids) Fortunately, we waited for it to go on sale– slightly– and got it then.

The bedding was custom made by Calico Corners in Dallas. The fabrics are all Annie Selke fabrics and my mom and I selected them and then she chose which fabrics should be used in each place. I love the way it all turned out.

What grandmother name did your mom choose?

My mom’s first name is Karen and she didn’t want a traditional grandmother name. She chose to be called “K.K.” My dad is going to go with Poppie. We’ve been calling him Poppie a lot in order to not confuse him with the baby since they share a name.

I think that covers all of the questions. Please let me know if you have any others– I’m an open book. I hope you’re all enjoying your weekend!

I think you chose a WONDERFUL name for your little boy. It’s very classic and a good name to grow into. My husband as 5 names (including our last name), and I love that about him. And I love that each name has a story behind it.

i love his name and i love that it is so meaningful to so many people in your family. and, that outfit is precious. it looks nearly identical to the one my jack wore home from the hospital. like you, i had to make sure he got to wear it before it was too tight, and honestly it was almost too tight that very day-my poor baby was like a sausage but he sure did look cute!!

I love his name! I love that you were able to name him something that has so much meaning to your family. I cannot believe he was born 1 year to the date of your cousin’s death–God clearly had a plan!

I’m kinda obsessed with Newport Cottages. It’s a fact.

…and the name Hudson? Also obsessed. I had never heard it used until you and Todd chose it. It really is a great Southern guy’s name. These Southern names are really growing on me since I moved here.

I still hope you are all doing well. I was so glad to see you on Twitter for a brief moment today.

I love Hudson’s full name. I think it is very masculine.

I also LOVE Hip Hip Hooray. So glad you are a fan too! They, without a doubt, carry the cutest clothes for kids. My daughter, Eleanor has a closet full of clothes from there, and I love every piece.

    Love, love Feltman Bros. I saved all those clothes that my children wore. They are definitely timeless. Hoping you are on the mend and feeling stronger every day! {My uncle is called Poppy by his grands. KK is So cute!!}

I got chills reading about the shared date between your cousin and son. That’s amazing.

I think John Matthew Hudson is a beautiful name. Both my brother and I have 4 names (Trevor Andrew Dylan —- and Jessica Elizabeth Abby —–). Personally, I love it and plan on giving my children two middle names, as well.

When I have children, can I hire you and your mother to do the nursery, lol? It’s something out of a catalog… so gorgeous.

Clay’s oldest brother had heart problems when he was born so they named him after the doctor that saved his life- William Clay. When I met Clay I asked if his real name was Clayton and he said “nope.. it’s William”. Everyone… and I mean everyone… calls him Dirt (you live in the South so you should get the Clay/Dirt reference) and he’s still turned out okay with being called by his middle name and nickname.

I love the name Hudson – probably because it is my son’s name! We picked it because we just liked the way it sounded and not because of any family association. But my Hudson is totally a Hudson. And I’m sure yours will be too! After he was born, I had a few people ask his name, get a funny look on their face and then nod at me sympathetically and say “oh, it’s a family name, right?”. And when I’d tell them that no, we willingly picked the name Hudson on our own volition and were not guilted into it, they tried to backpedal and tell me how interesting of a name it was. But I love it! So classy and very presidential sounding!

I love the name hudson too and especially hearing the meaning on why you chose it. I named my little girl Ella because when I was pregnant I was asking about family names. My mom told me my great-grandmother’s name was Ella, which I never knew. Ella’s middle name is Jo, which is also a family name. The name Joseph has been in my family for over 200 years. My grandfather, whom I was very close to was named Joseph, my mom’s name is JoAnn, My cousin is Joseph Tyler, my middle name is Jo so it only seemed fitting. If I would’ve had a boy I would’ve named him Nolan which is my mom’s maiden name. Phew! That is probably more than you wanted to know:)

Oh, my daughter also calls my dad Poppy

Congratulations!! Hudson is so handsome! -I have been following your blog for a little while, but have never commented.

I love the name Hudson. Our boy name is Roman and it will actually be his middle name too. My husband is the same way. William “Chad”. I think it’s a pretty common thing, especially with guys. I just want to know why the grands make such a big deal about their names. That was such the topic for so long. My moms name is also Karen and my MIL wanted her to be called KK too. She didn’t really like it. She is more traditional (very common) Nana. My mother in law still doesn’t know what she wants to be called. She changes her mind all the time and my little girl, Olivia, is already 9 1/2 months old!

I love your baby’s name. I’ve known a Jonathan Keith and Christopher Jordan…both went by their middle names. Sometimes, families just have a specific name they want to call their child by, but also want a family name or something…it all works out!

He’s an adorable baby…thanks for sharing him with us. 🙂

I absolutely love the name, and it is so touching that it is infused with such meaning. I’ve actually noticed that this is more prevalent in Texas & the South; seems like there is much more thought given to names, and it is very common here to go by your middle name. May do the same myself with the mini-Pretties one day.
