maternity leave book reviews

I’ve been a reading machine since starting my maternity leave. Between books and laundry, I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot.

First, I finished reading Same Kind of Different as Me. It was wonderful and I highly recommend it. I know that my hormones are raging right now, but  I sobbed through the last 80 pages of this book. It is such a fantastic story– and a true story. My parents both read the book and then my Dad got a copy for Todd and me and encouraged us both to read it. I can’t say enough good things about it, but I’m not going to write any details because I don’t want to give anything away.

About twenty minutes ago I finished reading Mommywood by Tori Spelling. I read sTori Telling (her other book) back in October and really enjoyed it. I mean, it is Tori Spelling, so it’s not the most thought provoking book, but she is very honest and it’s a quick read. The first book was highly entertaining, so I knew I needed to pick up Mommywood.

I found myself judging Tori more in the second book than in the first. The book was funny and I enjoyed reading her very honest tales of parenting. She’s not preachy about anything regarding parenting and I really liked that. The book is mostly a collection of anecdotes that are relevant to being a mother. I definitely laughed outloud a lot in this book.

My judgment isn’t about her parenting, but about her communication style. Tori talked a lot about her mother in the first book and made her point very clear– not the most nurturing mother. Now she passive aggressively complains about her mother in the second book. It’s as if Tori and Candy (who also now has a book) use their books to tell each other how mad they are at one another.  And then they each retaliate with another book. Just get over it. If you don’t like each other just let it go– they both just sound so petty taking digs at each other all the time.

I have two more books that I could start and finish before Thursday comes. If anyone has any great recommendations please let me know. I’m not sure how much down time I’ll have, but I know that I will be stuck at home for a while, so any light reading would be great!

Thanks for the reviews! I am always looking for a good book!

I just did a post on my blog about a great book I just read. it was called The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. It’s a children’s novel, but it was so wonderful! The story is so sweet and has a a wonderful message. And it’s a quick read! It’s a fabulous story about love and hope.

    Happy reading 🙂

Thanks for the reviews, I have been wanting to read Stori Telling and Mommywood but I think I am going to save them for the beach this summer…they seem like good beach books.

Thanks for sharing! I want to pick up Same Kind of Different now.

The Lovely Bones and My Sister’s Keeper are great, if you haven’t yet read them. I also liked Devil in the Junior League for a silly, fun read. My favorite of all time is Valley of the Dolls, though.

I enjoy reading about all your book recommendations. I’m reading sTori Telling right now. Tori seems pretty down to earth, but I agree with you about she and her mother’s relationship and taking jabs at one another through their books.

Next on my list is Same kind of different as me. I have it on hold at the local library. It may be a while before I get it though b/c it’s so popular.

My favorite series is Outlander (also the title of the first book) by Diana Gabaldon. My mom is the one who told me about it and since then everyone from my fiance to his grandmother has loved it. (Personally, I don’t think they do a good job of describing the book on the back so don’t judge it on that.)

And on another note, Thursday is so close!!!

Do you like Jodi Picoult or Jennifer Weiner? They both do pretty good stuff. I need to get Tori Spelling’s books. I have heard they are good… If you are interested, maybe we can swap some books? I will look and see what I have and shoot you an email.

I started “Same Kind of Different . . .” and will have to give it another shot.

Had the same thoughts about “Mommywood”; I liked it & certainly can emphathize with mama drama, but that seemed like a poor way to communicate about it. Also, don’t you think it’s odd that she never mentions her brother? I wouldn’t even know that he exists if I didn’t have “90210” issues . . .

    Hey,
It’s my first time coming to your blog (I came over here from the pledge thing when I saw your video after watching Casey’s) because I see we’re both from Columbia. It’s a small world. Just wanted to pop in and say that I LOVE reading so this post excited me. I’ve had the book “Same Kind of Different as Me” recommended to me as well, and I just haven’t been able to buy it to read it. So it’s really as good as people say it is? I’ll have to figure out how to get it then.

I have never posted a comment on your blog before, but I read it sometimes and I do enjoy your stories. Anyway, I had my son this time last year and Jenny McCarthy’s “Belly Laughs” was recommended to me. Even if you’re not a big fan of hers, her wit and wisdom is to be much appreciated…any any woman could use a few laughs before the big “D-Day”! Good luck 🙂
