This year, on American Idol they’ve introduced a fourth judge. And I happen to love her. Kara DioGuardi brings a lot to the judge’s table with her real knowledge of music, star quality, and her ability to recognize a talented person when she sees him or her. She’s also gorgeous (and she reminds me of one of our favorite bloggers, Nina).
Over the past few weeks, as the end of the show gets closer, the judges have less and less time to give their critiques. It takes a good bit longer for four judges to state their opinion, so the producers were rushing them along when it came time to critique the last two or three contestants.
Last night, Ryan said that the judges would be working in teams of two; Randy and Kara would critique one contestant then Paula and Simon would critique the next. And they would rotate. Personally, I don’t like this method because I always want to know what Simon has to say. Honestly, I think everyone except Paula always has something constructive and valid to say. I’m also tired of Paula rolling her eyes every time Kara speaks. She seems a little territorial.
I personally like American Idol better with three judges– I just think that Paula should be the one to take a hike.
I want to know what you think. Are there too many judges? Did you like the way they set it up last night? Are Nina and I the only ones that like Kara?

i’m actually not a fan of either of the girls. randy and simon are the only ones that ever give any constructive feedback. i HATED not hearing simon last night!
I like Kara too. It is nice to have a female voice who knows what she is saying. Paula was saying the most random things last night trying to sound intelligent and deep. It was annoying.
As a contestant on the show, I would be pissed if Simon didn’t critique me. He is the one that I care about the most. It must KILL him not to be able to talk each time since I know he is very opinionated on each person.
A friend thinks they added Kara so they could phase out Paula but honestly, I don’t think the show would work without each other them. If Simon left, viewership would go down, down, down.
I like Kara and I too am sick of wordy-never-makes-any-sense Paula!
Simon needs to comment on EVERY contestant. Sometimes I think Randy and Kara are a little too easy on them

i agree 4 judges is too many! we are always interested in what simon has to say, he definitely needs to comment on each contestant. we’re not big of fans of kara but she does look like the gorgeous nina!
I LOVE Kara and I also think she looks like Nina 😉 And I said the same thing last night about always wanting to hear what Simon has to say! I feel like his opinion is the most legitimate some how.

I’m a fan of Kara. I don’t think that Paula needs to be there at all! Kara brings a different perspective and isn’t all roses and jibberish when she talks!
She totally looks like Nina!!! I don’t watch the show but I just had to agree with you on that point!!! Although…I’m so very ready for LOST tonight!!!
If Paula would stop trying to sound smart, it would save some time! Ha ha!
I like Kara, but my hubby doesn’t. I really want to hear Simon every time… he is funny!
i wish they would get rid of paula too. she drives me nuts. she never seems to have her own opinion and she says the most off the wall things.
I love Kara too. Paula is always positive and in a show like American Idol, constructive criticism is the most helpful. Kara gets down to business but also has a way of being respectful at the same time. I would love to say See-ya Paula too!
I agree!!! I always want to know what Simon thinks too. I like Kara, am getting tired of listening to Paula. 🙂 And I didn’t like the paired up critiques either!! 🙂
I have to say I really enjoy Kara and Simon’s feedback. They read my mind sometimes or say what I shout out! haha. They are just on point no matter who you like. I think Simon has gotten a lot nicer tho. He’s honest.
I adore Kara (and, yes, she’s as adorable as Nina!). I think she does a great job critiquing. I also love simon (regardless if I agree with him or not), and I would be livid if he didn’t get to critique me!! He’s by far the best judge in the sense that he’s the best critiquer. Paula does need to go if they are only going to keep three judges, but I think they won’t get rid of her unless she chooses to leave (and she won’t).
I did have to say that I loved Kris last night even though Randy didn’t like him. Once is on of my favorite movies ever, and I love the song Falling Softly. Anoop- too cute!! Adam- ROCK STAR!!
I like Kara. She has constructive comments without being cruel.
I’m to the point of hating Paula. I always liked her before, but she is grating on my nerves this year. Nothing she says makes any sense.
I hate to admit it but I haven’t watched AI since Carrie Underwood won – what was that, 4 years ago? Not sure why, especially given my love of reality tv, but I just can’t seem to get into it anymore.
However, everyone that mentioned the “new way” today seemed to be in massive disfavor of it. Hopefully they’ll see the error of their ways and fix it.
I’m not an AI fan, but my husband is so therefore I’ve been watching this season. I too think Paula needs to go. Often I’ll be only listening to the show and ask hubby if she has any clue what she’s talking about.
I don’t like Paula or Kara. Paula acts like a lunatic all the time and Kara is boring to me. I also prefer three judges but wish that they’d find a new female after ditching their current two.
I love Kara!!! Of course I also love the fact that she reminds me of my bf. 🙂

I’m not a Cara fan – I think the original cast worked better.
I like the orginal cast-Simon, Randy and Paula. I am not a fan of Kara. Some of her comments are okay, but she’s definitely not a favorite. Her hair looked much better tonight than last night! I read where Paula and Kara were roommates at one point- shocked to hear that!

I don't watch Idol every time it's on, but I have seen Kara, and I really like her, too. She brings a bit of normalcy and credibility to the female perspective on that show.
I agree that Paula needs to move on to other things…like the Betty Ford clinic. I get sick of her ramblings and thinking, "She's so on pills, she's so on pills, she's so on pills…" each time I hear her speak or see her try to communicate. Then I think of the great songs & videos she made while I was a teenager…so sad to see what she's become. Paula…go get some help! And, Kara…thanks for joining Idol!
Agreed, only hearing 2 judges is just not as good, and I really want to hear what Simon has to say.
I do like Kara…I think she is a good addition…Paula’s reviews get wordy and hardly ever have a point.

Agree 100% Kara knows what she is judging and poor Paula is still clueless. I think they should go back to 3 judges booting Paula!

They definitely need to go back to 3 judges so they can’t have a tie. I’m not a Kara fan because I feel like she’s doing a bad Julia Roberts imitation all the time. I like when Simon rips on Paula and rolls his eyes at her, so that provides some comic relief to the show. Honestly, I don’t think Randy adds that much to the show so maybe they should just have Simon and no other judges. Isn’t that who we all care about hearing from anyway?
I totally agree—Simon and Kara give the best constructive criticism, whereas Paula says things like, “Your outfit is great!” Give me a break—this is a singing competition, not a styling competition.
I think this is Paula’s last season because she wants to get back to recording and stuff.

I always feel like Paula is wasted or something.. I cringe when it is her time to speak.. she really bugs me.. and when she gets up and dances during peoples performances.. that bugs me too and half the time what she says.. makes no sense at all!

As much as I love Paula as an entertaining person (and her music from the 80’s early 90’s) it is time for her to go. It seems as though she rarely makes sense these days with her comments. I don’t really love Randy either anymore, but I love Simon and Kara!

In an ideal world it would be Kara and Simon. Randy is entertaining but, meh… And Paula, well she just needs to leave.
I cannot stand this new way of doing things. I need to hear Simon’s biting remarks all the time, not just a few times a night! It just feels rushed and silly.

I’m with you..Paula needs to go! She uses these big words that honestly I don’t think she knows what they mean half the time!! I love Kara! I almost wish they did their judging like they do on Dancing With The Stars! Of course Paula would be beating Simon with her paddle all the time! Has anybody else noticed how touchy feely her and Simon are this season?
I love Kara! Have you ever looked her up on YouTube? Seriosly, she’s absolutely incredible! I think Paula is nice but she never has anything important to say. I think 4 might be too many judges, too.

I’m with you. I hated the way they did it mostly because I am always waiting for Simon’s comments, but I actually really like Kara. I feel like she’s actually honest, maybe not as blunt as Simon, but honest.
