first conversation of the week…

I was awakened at 1:45 this morning by my husband talking to me… loudly. I sat straight up in bed and said, “What did you say?”

The rest of the conversation went like this:

Todd: “I saaaiiid, ‘Know what I mean, Vern?’ “
Erin: “What?!”
Todd: “KNOW. WHAT. I. MEAN. VERN?”
Erin: “I heard you. I just don’t know what that means.”
Todd: “Never mind. Just forget it.”
Erin: “No. Not ‘never mind.’ It’s the middle of the night and you woke me up to tell me something and I want to know what it means.”
Todd: “It’s from Ernest!”
Erin: “Yes, sweetheart. I know that the quote, ‘Know what I mean, Vern?’ is from Ernest. Why did you say it to me right now?”
Todd: “Because of the conversation we were having about writing journals and the big discussion we just had about research.”
Erin: “Todd? Are you asleep?”
Todd: “I don’t know, maybe.”
Erin: “We didn’t have a conversation about journals or research.”
Todd: “Just forget it.”

I don’t have much experience with people talking in their sleep. One of my best friends does some sleep walking and talking and I was always able to talk her back into bed, but it’s a little different when your lifetime bed partner is quoting Ernest P. Worrell in the middle of the night.

p.s. We had a 4D ultrasound of our precious baby boy today, but the “Ernest talking in your sleep” story trumped the 4D ultrasound story for blog material. More on the ultrasound coming tomorrow.

  2. Landra Lynn says

OMG I just read this blog post aloud to my husband because he wanted to know what I was laughing so hard about!

My hubs has a bit of a sleep disorder where he talks in his sleep EVERY NIGHT. It used to bug me, but now I just find most of his chatter amusing. Personal favorite? The night he sat straight up in bed and said:

“The anecdote to the *mumbling* sickness is in the *mumbling* room!”

And promptly fell back to sleep.

And oh! I want details on the ultrasound 🙂 We’re thinking of having one of those done.

  3. Mandy Rose says

Seriously, I just busted out laughing! That was so funny!

My hubby will do the same thing sometimes and I think it’s funny how they say “nevermind”…as if they know they are talking nonsense, but can’t control it.

Can’t wait to hear about your 4D! That was one of my favorite parts of pregnancy!

  4. Megan says

Hahah! This was hillarious! I just wrote a post about my hubby talking in his sleep this week. It must be a weird week?!?! He has never talked in his sleep before!
Your story is too funny though! Did he remember it the next morning?

  6. *~! megs !~* says

Hilarious!! I have to say in our house I do the talking. Usually I’m yelling at a dog in my sleep.. My hubs thinks I may need to change my profession!!

  7. Jenna says

I just laughed so hard I cried. And then my friend made me send it to her so she could know what I was laughing at.
I wish there was a blog entirely devoted to peoples sleep talking conversations. That would be a good read.

  11. Michelle says

That is hilarious! My old college roommate used to talk/mumble in her sleep. It scared the crap out of me and I would hide under my sheets. For some reason, sleep talking freaks me out. I think the person is going to wake up and start talking to me which is very scary in my mind. I’m glad you blogged about it so you can relive this story Forever!!

  12. SouthernAccent says

Ha ha – that is hilarious! Most of the time when my hubs talks in his sleep I can’t understand a thing – it’s like he’s speaking in tongue!

  13. Kate says

LOL!!!!!!! I LOVE it! Especially since me, Evs, and my dad all say “Know what I mean, Vern?” all the time!

I always talk about the random-ist (most random?) stuff when I’m at the cusp of sleep (and usually after a couple glasses of vino)… it totally wigs Evs out!

  14. Practically Perfect... says

That’s pretty funny! Chris had actually never heard that quote till we were married 🙂

  16. Mrs. Newlywed says

OMG I just about died reading this!

Mr. Newlywed is a sleep talker, and it is hilarious. I usually don’t mind being woken up in the wee hours to hear the funny things.

Then I like to remind him about them for at least the next 24 hours 🙂

  17. Air Force Wife says

My hubby talks in his sleep all the time. He also has night terrors. One time he got up and thought there was a fire behind our bed. Craziness.

  20. Mrs. Potts says

Oh! I totally talk in my sleep – it usually happens when I’m really stressed about something (usually work). I’ve carried on complete conversations with my mom when I was little.

  21. Legallyblondemel says

Awesome. These are the sorts of little surprises that make marriage such a blast, yes? When they don’t otherwise make us want to maim our spouse, that is. 😉

  22. Tracy's Porch says

I’m feeling your pain. My hubby talks, walks and sees spiders and snakes in his sleep. He has mistaken the closet for the bathroom, and sadly, a purse was not saved. He has jumped out of bed ducking and weaving from the flying spiders. I’ve noticed it happens more when he is stressed out.

Can’t wait to see the 4D pix.

  23. The Shabby Princess says

Ha! My husband has never done anything quite like that, although he has ahem, lovingly told me to “just hush!” when I’ve been up sick with a cough or something…and, he has been known to eat cookies in his sleep. Now, trying to convince a grown man that he is asleep and needs to put the cookies down and go back to bed is a rather interesting experience all in itself.

Can’t wait to hear about the 4D ultrasound! How exciting!

  24. Barefoot in the Park says
