Confessions of a Shopaholic

So this may make me a very unpopular blogger today, but I wanted to give an update on Confessions of a Shopaholic. I went to see it with four fabulous girls last night and the company was great! We had all gone to see He’s Just Not That Into You last Sunday night and loved it.

I’ve read two books in the Shopaholic series, so I was kind of invested in the movie. I was really excited about watching a chick flick with some fun chicas and getting some great eye candy from all the fantastic fashion. The movie was styled by The Pat Fields, so it had to be great. Wrong. The clothes weren’t even that great!

I found myself getting bored about twenty minutes in and I covered my face with embarrassment at least twenty times. There were lots of those, “I can’t watch” moments. Does anyone else do that? I think the worst movie for me was Meet the Parents. That movie makes me so unbelievably uncomfortable that I have to leave the room when I watch it.

I didn’t have high expectations for the movie. I was entertained enough for a Sunday night. It’s just not going to be one of those that I must watch again even if it’s on TBS on a Sunday afternoon. I always stop to watch The Devil Wears Prada for its funny acting by Meryl Streep and fabulous clothes!

If you loved the movie, please don’t hate me for writing this!
ETA: This is just my opinion. I am not an expert on the books and I didn’t have high expectations of the movie. I was just looking for a fun movie to watch with fun girls. It met that criteria. I wasn’t disappointed, but I just don’t need to see it again. There were plenty of funny parts, but I looked at my watch a lot during the movie. The books frustrated me just as much as the movie did, so I knew what I was getting into. It was still entertaining.

I’m behind on my chick flicks… maybe I’ll see He’s Just Not That Into You first. Thanks for the review!!

  2. The Cape House says

That’s too bad, but I confess I’m not terribly surprised. I guess it all depends on the expectations you have going in. It is disappointing, though, when movies are a let down. Thanks for letting us know.

  3. Mrs. Newlywed says

Hmm…I have never even read the books. Huge confession: I am a literature snob, and I do not read chic lit at all. [read: my degree is in Brit Lit.]

I kind of thought the movie looked a little dull from the commercials, and I am glad your review is honest. I wasn’t planning on rushing out to see it anyway, but now I definitely won’t be.

  4. BLC :o says

Oh nooo, I loved it!!! I read the entire series, a while back, and had trouble remembering if it was true to the book or not. Either way, I thought it was great. Also, the clothes were reflective of a shopaholic … trainwrecked! Xoxo-BLC

  5. Miss E says

Oh I liked it, but I wasn’t expecting too much. I saw “He’s Just Not That Into You” last week and thought it was terrible. I felt the same way about it that you did about Shopaholic. Anyway, hope you had a nice V-day weekend!

  6. Sarah says

I liked the movie, but definitely didn’t love it.

Wish it had stuck to the plot of the book better… but oh well.

And I agree on the clothes – they were just weird.

  7. preppy little dress says

the only scene worth commenting on is the jars of pennies scene! the rest is for the dogs, talking mannequins – come on!

  8. Allison says

I didn’t have high hopes for this movie, so I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there were changes, and no, I don’t think Becky Bloomwood (MY Becky, anyway) dresses like she did in the movie. However, I think that the essence of the books was captured. And if the talking mannequins turned you off… well, maybe you haven’t read the books, i.e. they’re a little far-fetched, too. It’s entertainment, right?

  9. Sandy says

It’s funny you said that but I also am uncomfortable watching “Meet the Parents”, it makes me anxious. I’ve read all four “Shopaholics”, and I already thought from the trailer, that the movie doesn’t follow the books. I will see it this week anyway. I LOVED “He’s just not that into you”, so funny and cute, a must see chick flick!

  10. Texan Couture says

awww sorry you did not like it, I loved it and thought although it did not follow the book completely it caught the essence of the characters

  11. Rebecca Jo says

Oh no!! Embarassing moments like that? The girls that I lead in our church youth group was wanting to see it… I would say from your opinion – that should be a no?

  12. Lucky in Love says

    Thanks for the advice!

I know what you mean about uncomfortable moments…..sometimes I feel that way watching the Office 🙂

  13. LyndsAU says

I haven’t seen it yet, but I plan to very soon! I don’t have high expectations for it, I just want to see the clothes and plus I loooove Isla!! Sad to hear it wasn’t great!! I’m not shocked though!

  14. KDLOST says

OH MY! I am so glad you said that about being embarrassed. I AM THE SAME WAY! I used to have to leave the room when I was a kid and the Flintstones were on (for some reason I got embarrassed for Wilma…) and I was the same with meet the parents.

I will maybe just have to netflix that one. Thanks!

  15. Mrs.Preppy says

I saw it over the weekend as well… was not that impressed. It was cute, but no Devil Wears Prada. I think I even dosed off once or twice.

  16. Nomers says

I had high hopes for this movie. After reading all the reviews this weekend, I’m thinking I may just wait until it’s a rental to see it.

  17. Mojito Maven says

honestly i read the books so long ago i don’t even remember if it followed the book closely. for me, there were parts that literally drove me insane because rebecca was acting annoying. i liked it, thought it was entertaining, but did not love it.

  18. Lovin a Farm Boy says

I haven’t seen that, but I totally agree with you about Meet the Parents. I get super uncomfortable with all that craziness.

  19. The Bona Fide Preppy Bride says

I have to agree, I enjoyed the Shopaholic books, but I was really not impressed with the movie.

He’s Just Not That into You was SO good though! I think Im going to drag my fiancee to that one so I can see it again!

  20. aron says

i saw it last night and thought it was ok… i had only heard bad things about it so i didnt have the highest expectations 🙂

i have read the whole series though and really wanted to see it! not one i will buy when it comes out.

  21. Kate says

Always glad to hear an honest movie review! I was really disappointed that they didn’t make Becky British… as it is written in the books – I LOVE the British chick lit humor and really wanted them to make the movie a fashion-y version of Bridget Jones… obvs, I will probably still see it but this review + the anti-British factor have bumped it way down on my list!

  22. TheCynicalOptimist says

Haven’t seen it or read it, but I think your review is on par with most. I have never see Devil Wears Prada, but have always wanted to as I love those kinds of movies. I saw He’s just not that into you last weekend and thought it was good too! Did you see the trailer for “All About Steve” ? OMG, looks hilarious, can’t wait to see it!

  23. My name is Megan... says

sad to hear that 🙁 I’ve not seen it. I REALLY want to see He’s Just Not That Into You! I could watch the Devil Wears Prada at least once a week…love it. Happy Monday 🙂

  24. southern daze says

This echoes other opinions I’ve heard so don’t feel like you’re the only out there feeling it. Even if if you were the only one saying it, this is YOUR blog and you can say whatever your pretty little heart desires. Don’t forget that 🙂

Thanks for the honest review. I’m happy to cross it off my “must see in the theater” list and add it to my netflix list. I’m hoping I may like it a little better given I’ve yet to read any of the books (I find I’m disappointed in most movie versions if I’ve read the book first).

So happy you had a good weekend otherwise!!

  25. Suzette says

Something about the previews have given me the impression that I wouldn’t be crazy about it.. We watched “He’s just not that into you” as well.. I was disspointed how negative the concept of marriage seemed to be portrayed! It was ok to me…

  26. Elizabeth says

I absolutely love the Shopaholic series books (read all of them) and everything by Sophie Kinsella. I’m not looking forward to the movie at all. They make her look like a complete idiot, and they have her dressed outrageously ridiculous. When I read the book, that is NOT how I envisioned the character at all.

I’ll probably still see it though… how sad is that?? 🙂

I saw “He’s Just Not That Into You” this weekend and it was fabulous!

  27. Rachel says

I read all the books and had high expectations…completely disappointed!!! I am with you…too uncomfortable and boring!

  28. prettyface says

LOL–When I saw Meet The parents in the theater I remember thinking..”OMG…this has to stop! I can’t watch him go through anymore hell”…and worst yet is that you KNOW it has to happen. Since that’s THE moviue. HAHA Too funny

  29. Lacy says

I couldn’t stand “He’s just not that into you”…I just thought everyone was so into themselves and that the couples were all so dysfunctional. Thanks for the review of this movie, so I know to watch it on DVD instead of struggling through at the theater.

  30. Mrs. Hibit says

I get HORRIBLE discomfort watching awkward situations unfold. I avert my eyes in real life, as well.

I’ll probably plan to see this movie at some point, but I’m glad I have a bit of warning!

  31. Trying to Remember it All says

I was so excited about that movie coming out as I’ve read all of the books and enjoyed them. I’ve heard from other people that the movie isn’t really good and I’m so disappointed. I’m going to wait for it to come out on DVD.

  32. Bama Belle... says

I was supposed to go see this tonight but haven’t been able to tear myself away from the little nephew long enough. I’m really not that excited about seeing it but had hopes it would be at least mildly entertaining. So not looking forward to the awkward situations – I am the worst with those!

  33. *~! megs !~* says

Oh boo!! I’m dying to see this purely for the clothes.. And Isla (yes we’re on a first name basis!).. I’m sad it was kind of a let down to you.. I have a hard enough time sitting through movies but if they’re not entertaining I would rather get a root canal!! Guess I’ll just wait to see it on DVD! Too many people have agreed with you on this!!

  34. Mrs. S. says

The books made me a little bored, too…so I am not too surprised about the movie. At least you watched the ther one to balance it out. I am glad to hear that He’s Just Not That Into You is good though!

  35. New Girl on Post says

Oh that makes me sad! I didn’t have high hopes for the movie, but I was at least hoping for as good as the Devil Wears Prada.

    Thanks for the review though!

  36. Trisha says

I, like some of your other readers, thought the opposite of both movies.

I don’t know how many times I looked at my cell while watching HJNTIY and thought, WHEN is this movie going to be over????

I LOVED Confessions of a Shopaholic!

  37. Princess Freckles says

I’ve only read one of those books and it frusterated me to no end! Its like, “Stop shopping, idiot!” I don’t feel sorry for people like that when they get into too much debt. Anyway, thanks for the review. I’m sure I’ll skip this at the theater and just rent it.

  38. All-American Preppy says

Oh darn, it looked so cute in the previews! I haven’t read the books so I don’t really know anything about the storyline, but I do like Isla Fischer. I totally know what you mean about being so embarrassed for people in movies that you can’t even watch–one of my college roommates has the same reaction as you!
