I’m a terrible blogger. I have been procrastinating my Texas update all day. I’m just so tired after our trip and in a little bit of a funk being back to work after spending four glorious days with my family. This happens every time. I told my students this morning that homesickness will never go away… even when you’re grown and married. You’re still going to want to be with your mommy and daddy.
We had such a great weekend! I already mentioned meeting the fabulous Mojito Maven on Wednesday night right after we arrived in Dallas.
On Thursday, my Dad and I went out on the Katy Trail with Beaux, the most wonderful dog in the world. Then we walked to the Village Burger Bar and I had a fantastic turkey burger. Todd and I dropped my dad off at work for a meeting, then we went to my mom’s store to pick out some fabric for our living room furniture that we’re having recovered. (more on that later)
That night, we packed a picnic and went to the Arboretum for a picnic and big band music. It was so much fun! The pumpkins were everywhere and it was such a perfect night.
Then we decided to try the fried grilled cheese sandwich. This was pretty good, too, but it definitely didn’t need the dipping sauce. We washed this down with a funnel cake that we all shared. I wanted to try so much more, but I couldn’t handle it. We were done.
My brother met us at the Fair after he drove in from Louisiana and I was so happy to see him! I hadn’t seen him since we rode to south Mississippi together to pick up Fiona. His hair has grown so much and he has a little bit of a beard. I really didn’t recognize him… what a strange feeling!
On Saturday, we spent the entire day watching football. One game after the other. We pulled ourselves together to get ready and head to Tillman’s Roadhouse. Upon my friend, Cyndi’s recommendation, we had the Trio of Fries and I had the chipotle ribs and white mac ‘n cheese for my entree. So yummy!!! We skipped dessert because we were basically still full from Friday’s State Fair adventures.
We managed to huddle together for one big family photo after eating at Tillman’s. My punk brother was tickling me to get me to “smile for real” and I ended up all squinty.
It was a fantastic weekend and I can’t wait to do it again!

I hear ya on the homesickness part. I am only 45 minutes away but it can feel like an eternity sometimes…

Glad you had such a fantastic time in the big D! You were sure able to pack a lot into your weekend and hit up the best of the best. Have a great week!!
What a wonderful time! The fair sounds fantastic, I would have loved to have gone to it. Yay for seeing your family too! Mine are coming in this week to visit me.
Looks like you had a great time and ate some great food (which is the important part right?)
That is so cool that you got to meet up with your blogging friend!
Hi…newish reader to your blog… Let me know if you’d like to read mine!
Love the pictures 🙂
i’d definitely love to read yours!!!
I think I have to try to fried grilled cheese… I am glad you had a good weekend in Dallas. The Arboretum is great any time of the year, but this time is especially great. I did my bridal portraits there last year and even have some of me in the middle of all the pumpkins!
What a great trip!! I love the fam picture! My punk brothers do that sort of stuff to me all the time!
sounds like a great weekend. You have a beautiful family! I live about 30 minutes away from my parents and two brothers and that’s as far as I care to get. I tear up everytime we even entertain the thought of moving away.
It’s hard to come back though isn’t it?
What a fun weekend! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. I felt like I was there with you and, truthfully, am stuffed after reading about your yummy meals. I’m thrilled you guys had the chance to check out Tillman’s and do hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Leaving my family is always hard for me too. Each time we leave California (or drop my parents off at the airport after our summer vacation trip)I need awhile to work through my sadness. Tears tend to flow easily and, thankfully, Lee has learned to just sit with me quietly and hold my hand. You’re right, homesickness is a part of your life…no matter how old you are!
Your pictures are fantastic and I loved the one of you and Todd at the Arboretum – so cute! The one of you and your mom is especially cute too.
Let us know if there’s anything we can do to help you through your funk…
Aww it looks like you and your fam had a blast! It’s so nice to spend time with everyone and what a fun weekend to be in the big D! You all look super cute in your pics.
I am right there with you on being homesick. We live about 30 min away from my fam, but it’s so hard to not see my momma everyday! We have always been so close and we bonded so much through the whole wedding planning process. It was hard to leave when I had to move out. Hopefully they felt the same, ha 🙂
So glad you had a great time, although I’m so sorry about the homesickness. I definitely struggle with it too at times, so it is nice to hear someone else’s take on it.
However did I miss both the fried grill cheese AND the dog show? Isn’t the Texas State Fair such a kick?
that sounds like a great weekend – its always so nice to spend relaxing time with the family. I’m looking forward to thanksgiving for that very reason – except we’re hosting at our house and bringing both families together, so maybe wont be so relaxing after-all!
It never gets easy…the homesickness. 🙁
That fried grilled cheese and the turkey leg just made me really, really hungry! 🙂 ♥
Wow – it sounds like you had a great trip. Just reading all of it made me tired and full 🙂 I love the Arboretum – and Dallas weather stays mild for so long that you can enjoy it through many seasons!
What a wonderful weekend you had 🙂 and it’s always so hard coming back to work after a weekend like that. and you are right, homesickness never goes away! i cry just about everytime i leave home 🙂 that fried grilled cheese has my mouth watering… great! I am off to the Hampton Inn gym! 🙂
I have the same withdrawal every time I get back from a visit home…at least it looks like a fantastic weekend!
Sounds like quite the trip! My cousin just moved to Dallas and loves it there so far – I can’t wait to go visit him! I am originally from NC and love going to the NC State Fair! I love how at the Fair they fry anything and everything, once I even had a fried Snickers (as if those could get any more unhealthy)! So glad you had a good weekend.
Sounds like you had a wonderful visit in Texas! I am with you… no matter how old I am, I will always wish I lived nearer to my parents and the rest of my family. I am ALWAYS in a funk for a few days after I return.
I love weekends with the fam…so comforting. I can’t believe you’ve never had a turkey leg before! Aren’t they yummy? And don’t worry about procrastinating…I haven’t blogged, commented or checked my personal email since last Wednesday! Eeek!
I love weekends with the family, but you are right, the Monday’s after are always hard!
Looks like you guys had a great time though. Too bad you never had time to eat! 🙂 J/K! That food looks amazing! And I’m glad you tried a turkey leg, it is the one thing I must ALWAYS eat at the fair!
That sounds like such a fun weekend! I’m glad you had such a great time! And that fair food sounded sooo good! I think we’re going next week! I’m so ready!
and you look soo cute in your pictures!
I’m glad you had such a wonderful weekend with your family! It looks like you guys had the best time, and all of that food makes me hungry!! It all sounds so yummy!!
I know what you mean about the homesickness. Although I don’t live very far from my mom, when we go out of town to visit the rest of the family, I’m totally in a funk for a couple of days after we get home. There’s nothing like spending time with family 🙂
My husband loves those turkey legs from the fair. We were just talking the other night about how we are going to go to the fair just for a night of eating “fair food.”
Sounds like you had so much fun!
Great post!
I know how you feel. I live 5 hours from my family and sometimes it seems so long – especially since my older sister moved back to be near them. They always have get togethers and I just hear about them 🙁
It seems like you had an excellent weekend! Oh and I love your hair!
Valet at the state fair… LOVE IT!
My parents live in Dallas and it’s about a 14 hour plus drive from where we live…so needless to say, I don’t get home often enough and miss them like crazy! Your pics were super-cute! That color is really pretty on you!
Sounds like a wonderful trip! I definitely agree with the old adage, “home is where your mother is!”
sounds like your trip to Dallas was wonderful – you couldn’t have picked a better weekend!!!
Homesickness sucks, I hear you. But the pumpkin pictures are adorable!
What a fun weekend! I’m glad you had such a good time!
Aw your family is so cute! Your mom specifically is gorgeous! Glad you had such a good time, and you are right. You never get to the point in life where you don’t miss your mom and dad! 🙂
Hi…it’s me again! I’d need your e-mail address so that I could send you an invite 🙂
It looks like you had such a fantastic time here! AND the State Fair has fried grilled cheese???? oh man, I may have to try that. The arboretum during fall when all the pumpkins are out is my favorite…and I also hear you on feeling homesick. it just never goes away! BUT you should come back soon for some more mojitos!!!
P.S. You and Todd look great in that picture and that picture of our dad with the turket leg is hilarious!
You have a beautiful family!

Glad you had such a fantastic time in the big D! You really managed to do and see a lot. Casey and I are going to The State Fair on Friday (when Jessica Simpson is singing!!) and I can’t wait for my annual fried food day. Fried Grilled Cheese sounds really good! That picture of you and Todd at the Arboretum is great — I really love the Arboretum in the fall with all of the pumpkins. And you mom is gorgeous (now I see where you get you good lucks – you guys look so alike!)
I am so glad you were able to come and see your family…. you’ll just have to come back to Dallas soon to fight the homesickness. Did you grow up in Dallas or did your parents move here after you moved out?
there is something seriously wrong with my google reader bc it never even told me that you updated!! super cute pictures – I L-O-V-E the fair!
I just found your blog and it was so funny to read all of the places you visited in Dallas…La Duni, Village Burger Bar, the Katy Trail, the Arboretum… I went to the State Fair yesterday and was also really disappointed by the dancing dogs! Mmm, fair food!
“I told my students this morning that homesickness will never go away… even when you’re grown and married. You’re still going to want to be with your mommy and daddy.”
Truer words were never spoken. It breaks my heart every time I leave my family after a weekend at home.
Amen about the homesickness!!! Sounds like you had a fantastic weekend…although, I wouldn’t expect anything less out of a weekend in Texas 😉
looks like fun! and you look sooo pretty in the pics!
Walker looks great!! I seriously love the long hair on him. He looks so much older with that hair on his face.
I can’t wait for the fair to come here – maybe we’ll have the grilled cheese concoction too! Seems like every year they come up with something new that’s fried! Is that a pumpkin wall behind you? Too neat!
that fried cheese sandwich looks amazing!! looks like you had a great time!
I laughed when I read what you told your students about homesickness, so true! My parents live in Dallas as well, doesn’t it seem like all you do when you’re back there is eat!? 🙂 I’ve never attended the Fair (I didn’t grow up there), but am hoping to do it soon! Very envious thatyou were able to try all the fried goodness. Glad you had such fun!
love the pumpkin pictures! And oh my that sandwhich looks wonderful!
you look gorgeous in these photos! that color is perfect for you! i’m glad you had a great time with the fam!
Can I just say that I am so envious that you got to spend 4 glorious days with your parents! Looks like y’all had a great time, and I would love to hear more about your mom’s amazing french toast–guessing it’s not low points?! 🙂
