christmas decorating for a newlywed

Christmas is a few months away, but I spent a good part of the weekend (when I wasn’t getting sunburned) searching for Christmas decorations for our house. Then A Belle and Her Beau did a post today about where she and her husband would be spending their first holidays as a married couple, so I thought I’d touch on our holiday schedule.

Todd and I spent last Christmas in Dallas with my parents and brother and we spent Thanksgiving here in Columbia with his family. It makes sense for us to spend Christmas in Dallas because I have two weeks off of work and I can get a nice trip in. My cousin is pregnant and my mom and I want to host a shower for her at Thanksgiving. We decided to go to Louisiana for Thanksgiving for the shower and spend Christmas in Columbia at our house. My parents and brother will come to Columbia and we’ll celebrate it all together with my family and Todd’s family.

I’m so excited to be celebrating our first Christmas as a married couple in our own home! I love visiting my parents for holidays, but I’m really looking forward to trying to establish some traditions in our house. I’m also really excited about decorating the house and feeling the magical feelings of Christmas here at our house. It’s definitely hard because we aren’t all in the same town, but it’s about compromise and finding the best option for that year’s holidays.

Ideally, we’d travel at the holidays, stop buying gifts, and go on an incredible trip to Spain!

Now, I need help. I found a couple of options for Christmas stockings. I’m going to go ahead and buy 4 stockings so the dogs can have one for now, but someday when little people are living in this house, I won’t have to look for matching stockings again.

Here are my options. I found both of these at Horchow/Neiman Marcus. One is whimsical and fun– and looks a lot like my Christmas tree. The other is very traditional, but beautiful.

Whatcha think?

The whimsical stockings are Krinkles by Patience Brewster.

Then, the more traditional option.

When Chris and I got married (around Christmastime), one of our showers included a request that each guest bring a Christmas decoration. So we have TONS of decorations and ornaments.

As for the stockings, I love the Krinkles “Wonder” stocking 🙂

Starting new Christmas traditions is magical and oh so much fun! It took me a few years to find my “Christmas style” and I just know you’ll enjoy finding yours. I LOVE the whimsical stockings and, of course, I’m also on the hunt for new ones for Lee + I. I spent all last year trying to find just the right ones and came up empty handed. Hopefully I’ll have more luck this year.

I can’t wait to see what you pick out and read about how you’ll be celebrating this year. We spend Christmas in California every other year with my family and this is that year. My current dilemma is how much I want to decorate knowing we won’t be here for the big day.

p.s. Thanks for the comment regarding Amy Atlas. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read Style Me Pretty and Oh Happy Day today. Normally I’m way behind the times but in this case I felt quite ahead of the curve {thanks to Once Wed}.

Love the whimsical stockings!! I think a lot of that is due to the fact that my mom always had traditional stockings growing up and I always swore I was going to be different.

I thought I was only only one thinking about Christmas decorating already! Those Krinkles are adorable! We have so many random decorations, I can’t wait to have our own style! This will be our first Christmas in our very own house, so I’m very much looking forward to this year 🙂

I love the fun stockings! I’ll tell you, we’ve been married 7 years and I’ve changed my tree style three times already – but I always include the ornaments that have meaning on the tree. I have a basic snowman theme and each year I play with it a little. One year I’ll do formal, with gold and red balls, then white and silver. Once we had our little guy, I started making it more fun and colorful! He also has a special wreath in his room for his special ornaments he gets each year as well!

The whimsical ones are cute! I’m impressed, we just got some fall decorations today!! Though it is still 100 degrees here, ha! It is so fun to have the first holidays together, yay! and each one thereafter too! Have fun!!

I think I’m a fan of the whimsical ones, although I like both honestly! We’ll be in Dallas over Christmas visiting my family, too! Are you a TX girl also!?

P.S. Thanks for all the comments recently, I’ve loved “getting to know you” through your blog…I’ve been reading so if you see a stalker on sitemeter its me! Added you to my blog roll!

Oh my-I am on the website now debating buying those whimsical ones!! I need 4 too. 2 for us and 2 for dogs 🙂 I agree with you about your excitement about starting your own traditions. I am really looking forward to that. I love the bright green color and red for Christmas. I love out of the box things and these stockings are great 🙂 Thanks for sharing the find!

I too love Christmas & the related decorations. And the first Christmas together as a married couple really is special!

Those stockings are lovely! I personally prefer the whimsical ones, as my family always did more of a "childlike" decorating theme, and I plan to do the same. Either way, I think it's a great idea to buy matching ones now.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Christmas! btw HI! I am a new reader to your blog! : ) My mom and sister put up around 7 christmas trees each a year in their house and I got started on my first one last year! I cant wait to spend this Christmas with “husband” (nov 15 wedding date!) I like both those stockings, but I kinda like the traditional ones better, they would go with all sorts of color schemes if you wanted to change up things in the future! : ) But the Krinkles ones are so cute and Dr seuss! : )

The whimsical is very fun and cute, but you might not like them in 10 years. The traditional will still be classic.

I got sucked into holiday thinking when I opened the new Pottery Barn catalog that came yesterday. I’m ready!

You should check ballarddesigns in the next few weeks as well. They have the greatest stockings and will monogram and sell very similar versions of the same thing each year, so down the road when you have new additions to your family you can add new stockings….

We’ll be in town over Thanksgiving so let me know if you have time in your action packed schedule and we can meet for lunch or dinner.

Just found your blog! Married Christmas – OH MAN that’s wonderful!!!! Congratulations :). As for the stockings – I think the whimsical ones have a bit more personality while the others are more formal. Keep us posted on what you choose 🙂
