where were you when the world stopped turning?

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in angerIn fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry
Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don’t know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below
Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters
I’m just a singer of simple songs
I’m not a real political man
I watch CNN but I’m not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love
Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you’re a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you’re watching
And turn on “I Love Lucy” reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love
I’m just a singer of simple songs
I’m not a real political man
I watch CNN but I’m not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love
The greatest is love
The greatest is love
Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day?

I love this song by Alan Jackson because it keeps those memories and those feelings from September 11, 2001 alive inside of me. There are a lot of things that Americans have in common, but one thing that ALL Americans have in common is that we went through this day together and we will all tell the story of that day to our children and our grandchildren. Everyone’s story is different and I have really enjoyed reading some of the other stories today of where people were when they heard or saw the news. Keeping those memories alive will honor the victims, honor those who are fighting for us and have been fighting for us in the years since that day, and will bring us all together.

I was a sophomore at Louisiana Tech University and September 11, 2001 was the first day of classes. I worked in the Admissions Office and I was walking to work from my apartment. When I got to work, it had just happened and a coworker had heard the news in the radio on her way in. Someone ran home to get a TV so we could stay updated on what was going on. I went to my first couple of classes and both were cancelled. No one could focus or concentrate on anything because we were overcome with worry. The University hosted a blood drive that day and my friend and I went to donate blood. I finally got in touch with my parents and had a little relief there. I wasn’t worried for their safety, but I needed the comfort of hearing their voices. I was supposed to go to Shreveport that night to see Matchbox Twenty, but we decided not to go. The concert ended up being cancelled after all. I went to the Methodist church in town and the place was packed. We held hands and sang patriotic hymns and prayed. The Alan Jackson song really hits home because I did some of those things that day.

I haven’t forgotten.

Where were you when the world stopped turning? I’d really appreciate hearing your story of where you were on September 11, 2001.

I was at the gym with my mom when we saw it on the news. When the second plane hit we called my dad and rushed home. We lived in Jacksonville, FL at the time which was high on the “target” list because of the naval stations. Anyway, Dad came home and we went to pick up my brother from school. I remember the four of us sitting around the TV all afternoon. For the first time in my life I was scared at my own house when I went to sleep that night. I’ll never forget it!

I was at work in North Carolina getting ready for a 9:30 meeting when a co-worker came to tell us about the first plane hitting. We learned about the second plane while in our meeting and spent the rest of the day glued to the tv. Work pretty much came to a standstill because everyone was in such a state of shock. I remember trying to get in touch with my family in CA and how hard it was to get through. By the time I finally got through I learned that my brother-in-law had actually been in the air on his way from Sacramento to LAX (in route to San Diego) for work. My sister was scared to death! When he landed they held the plane but didn’t tell the passengers why. He had no idea what happened until he called my sister. With all the flights grounded, he raced to rent a car so he could be home with his family. It was a 400 mile drive but all he cared about was getting home to my sister and their 5 year old son.

I had only moved to North Carolina from Lake Tahoe three months prior and while I had a few close friends by that time, they were no substitute for not being with my family. I longed to be with them so I could feel safe. The 2600 miles that separated us felt like a million that day and I, too, had a hard time feeling safe in my little duplex. I’m sure it didn’t help that for the next several days I was glued to the tv coverage and heard the heart wrenching stories told one by one. I’ll never forget how helpless I felt. I remember making a donation to the Red Cross but feeling that wasn’t near enough.

I was teaching class of frightened little Kindergartners!! My oldest was in the next 5K class and my 8 month was in childcare. When our (shouldn’t have made the announcement over the PA system) principal made the announcement. There were tears a plenty and i remember holding children all day..

I love that song too. Always makes me tear up! I was sleeping actually… I was a freshman at Auburn University and my roommate came running in my room yelling a plane had struck the World Trade Center. It took me a second to realize what happened and what she was saying. Even after that, everyone around me seemed to think it was an accident, until the second one hit. I remeber being terrified and everyone on campus was so distraught. I will never, ever forget that sickening feeling.

Ps: I am getting the personal sprayer 🙂 Wish me luck!

I was a sophmore in college and was at work that morning at CVS. Was in the photo department when a customer came in and said that we better get a TV up there if we had one, that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I remember looking at her with my mouth open and not really comprehending what she was saying.
We brought a TV up to the counter. Noone really did anything except stare in horror at what was going on. I do remember being shocked at a couple people coming in though, fully knowing what was going on, and still demanding their pictures in an hour!
I got off of work around 1200 bc of class, but instead went to my mom’s work to sit with her for a while. That’s all I wanted was to be with family.
That song is amazing. Probably catches the emotion we all felt the best out of all the songs that were made.

I won’t repeat my “where were you” here because I blogged about it already but I’ve loved reading everyones posts about where they were — thanks for sharing (and for asking everyone else to share)

Thanks for the comment on my blog!

I was just getting out of bed before heading into work and the first tower had just been hit (but they didn’t even know what had happened yet). Right as I turned on the tv, the second plane hit and I watched people jumping from the windows. To this day, my blood still runs cold just thinking about it.

Oh, and I can’t help but cry EVERY time I hear that song.

I love that song, too — I get chills every time I hear someone’s story about 9/11 — Read my post for today… it is my story of my 9/11 experience 7 years ago today —

I moved to NYC on August 16, 2001. I wasn’t even finished unpacking my boxes when 9-11 occurred. I could have easily turned around and headed back home to Mississippi. But I never even once considered that. I had committed to move to NYC, and never questioned leaving after the attacks — I’m not sure why. But 7 years later, I’m grateful that I am still here in this city. I would not have had the amazing experiences that only a place like NYC can offer — both good and bad – but life-changing, nonetheless. Also, I would not have met my wonderful husband 4 years later if I had decided to leave after 9-11-01.
