love where you live: Columbia, South Carolina

Last night, I went to the first gathering of a new, summertime, 6-week Bible study. My sweet friend, Ellen, put together a great little hodge podge of friends and asked us to come to her house once a week to discuss a book and study God’s word. And, of course, hopefully get in some amazing fellowship in the mean time.

When I looked at the first list of people who would be participating, I thought I only knew a couple of the other women. And when I arrived last night, I realized that through some way or another (church, Bible study, preschool, word of mouth about a fabulous hair stylist) I knew almost everyone else in the room.

We each went around the room to introduce ourselves, and most of our stories didn’t revolve around our children or our daily activities, but they were stories that focused on what brought us all to Columbia, South Carolina.

How did we all end up in this big small town? (I say big small town because Columbia really isn’t small. If you include all of the little neighboring suburbs, Columbia is pretty dang big. But it’s also a really old, really Southern town, where everyone still seems to know everyone.)

I don’t believe in coincidences and I fully believe that God is in the details.

I ended up in Columbia, South Carolina because when I finished college at Louisiana Tech, I needed somewhere to go next. My parents had moved to Columbia a little over a year before I finished college, so I decided to move to Columbia to be close to them and to attend graduate school at the University of South Carolina.

I finished graduate school, took a job in Columbia because I still wanted to be near my family, and then about 10 months later, my parents moved to Dallas. (They have since moved to Indiana, where we moved in 1995, and they lived there for 8 years before moving to Columbia. They move around quite a bit, so it’s really no big deal to us.)

At my first job, I met Todd. He worked there, too. I’ve told that story before, so I won’t tell it all again.

So, you see? It was no coincidence that I moved here, stayed here to work instead of going away to a larger, more glamorous city. I was supposed to meet my husband. God had perfectly laid out this plan. His plan.

I’m one of those people that has moved around a whole lot in my life. And, yet, I’ve lived in Columbia, South Carolina longer than I’ve ever lived in any one place. And I didn’t move here until I was 21 years old.

It still makes me so sad that we are 12 hours away from my parents. (But it’s better than being 17 hours away from them when they lived in Dallas.) Trying to work out visits always stresses me out and I feel like I just can’t get there enough to see them. I wish so much that it was easier.

But I love this big small town.

What do I love about it?

I love the big parts. We have almost anything you could want when it comes to shopping. It’s not New York City, and it’s not even Charlotte. But we have a Trader Joe’s and a Whole Foods now. That’s a big deal to us!

I love the small parts. I can go almost anywhere in town and see at least one person that I know. I know a lot of that comes from living somewhere for nine years. But I just love how small things seem. We always seem to be running into the same people at football games, Starbucks, preschool, church, the park, Publix, and anywhere we go. I just love that! Community is so important to me.

I love our church. We attend Shandon Baptist Church and have loved investing in the church with time and service. The people there have become like family in so many ways, and we are just so blessed to have them here.

I love the South. South Carolina is deep south, y’all. There’s so much history here. Things here are very old. Historic homes, historic landmarks. The history is everywhere.

I love the surroundings. We’re an hour and a half from everywhere. We can get to Charlotte in 90 minutes for great shopping. We can get to Charleston in 90 minutes for the beach and general Charleston bliss. We can get to Greenville in 90 minutes to visit Todd’s alma mater, Furman University, and because we just love Greenville. (Not to steer the topic away from Columbia, but we really really love Greenville. You should visit if you haven’t before.)

I love the fun. We have zoos, parks, rivers, great/fantastic/amazing local restaurants, great shopping museums. We have plenty to do and plenty to keep our kiddos entertained and relatively cultured.

I love the people. I miss my family terribly, but we are so blessed to have Todd’s family here. And the amazing friends we have made through church, through Junior League, through our kids’ preschool, and just through mutual friends, like last night at Ellen’s house. I’m so so very thankful for the people.

Columbia is fantastic.

But I truly believe that God has put us where we are for a reason. No matter where he puts us, there is a purpose. There are people to be loved, churches to invest in, and fun new things to explore.

When I moved here nine years ago, I never ever imagined that the day would come when I wouldn’t be kicking and screaming about not getting to move to something bigger and better. But I truly love it here. With all of my heart.

While I do wish it was closer to my family, I love that we have put down roots here and that our children will grow up somewhere that they have roots, too.

So, how about you? How did you end up in the town or city where you live? Are you like me and have found yourself pleasantly surprised by how much you love where you live?

A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet review & giveaway

*Today’s post is a review of Sophie Hudson’s book, “A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet.” And, with Shay from Mix and Match Family and Sheaffer from Pinterest Told Me To, we’re giving away 9 copies of the book!

I spent a lot of my weekend devouring the most wonderful book of short stories. And I laughed out loud. Often. And I cried. I wiped away tears as I remembered my own grandmother standing at the stove. And the way her home smelled when she made gravy. And the way she offered us ice cream, and when we’d get excited about the ice cream, she’d confess that she only had Cool Whip, not ice cream. And we were tickled to eat it anyway, straight out of the bowl.

As I read A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet by BooMama’s Sophie Hudson, I was full of the warm fuzzies. Because, there’s nothing like family. And in the south, there’s nothing like family and food.

Sophie’s book is full of hilarious stories of family that are just overflowing with heart and love. We all grew up in families with funny quirks and funny expressions and, if you’re lucky like I am, delicious food. And at the heart of that food is a matriarch, who taught all the women how to prepare it.

Sophie’s book made me laugh and cry and remember. And it made me think of so many of our own family memories in very small downs in the deep, deep south in Louisiana. I remembered friendships that go back for generations and stories of forgiveness and grace. I chuckled as I thought of my own parents’ China pattern and laughed at the endearing way my mother-in-law orders her steaks (“with absolutely no pink”) and how my grandmother took us to Western Sizzlin’ when we came to visit. And how my Dad and grandfather sweated through their dress shirts on Father’s Day 1990 at Bonanza in Ruston, Louisiana, because the air conditioner had gone out. But my grandmother absolutely had to get his soft serve vanilla ice cream from Bonanza that day.

Sophie’s book helped me remember and made me laugh. Those family stories are absolutely priceless, and I know that when you read her book, you’ll remember the beautiful stories that make up the fabric of your family, too.

I’m super excited today because I’m teaming up with Shay from Mix and Match Family and Sheaffer from Pinterest Told Me To to give away 9 copies of A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet!

Yes, there will be 9 total winners! There are lots of different ways to enter, so just follow the Rafflecopter and I’ll cross my fingers that you’ll be a winner. Because this book absolutely warmed my heart and you all need to read it!

sweet summer time!

This is the first time I’ve picked up my computer since early Friday morning. I even had some fun posts to share with you from around the blogosphere, but it just didn’t happen.

We had a fantastic weekend. I don’t know what it is, but even as a stay-at-home mom, I live for the weekends. And, of course, the biggest difference in the weekend versus the weekdays is that Todd is with us. Having him home to play with the kids, talk to, hang out with, and just do fun family things together makes the weekends so much fun!

Most of these pictures were posted on Instagram this weekend. (If you’re not following me on Instagram, then these are all new to you!)

On Saturday, I wanted to cram the day full of all the fun things. We wanted to tire the boys out as much as possible and after a really rainy week, we just craved some time outside.

We met the Fuller family at the park early on Saturday morning. All the kids ran around and Todd and I got to catch up with our friends.

After the park, we headed for the zoo. The boys and I usually go to the zoo during the week, and it had been a pretty long time since we went with Todd, so this was a fun treat. The zoo membership is just the best investment. Columbia has a really great zoo and we love to go and spend about an hour. Having the zoo membership makes us feel like we don’t have to spend all day there, but we can go, look at the animals, run around a bit and then leave. Because we know we’ll be back the next week.

Hudson’s new “cheese” face is a little scary!

Hudson still loves to ride in the stroller at the zoo when it’s just us. When we’re with friends he wants to walk. But I love that he still loves the stroller, and since Hudson loves it, Hayes is still willing to ride, too. It definitely makes it easier on us to keep up with them! The kangaroo exhibit is just so neat. We just walk right there where they are.

And these sweet koalas. That sweet baby! Oh my goodness. Maybe once of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

After naps on Saturday, we went to the pool. We spent a couple of hours at the pool, and then ended up eating supper at the pool before heading home.

Hudson’s week of swim lessons have made him pretty fearless in the pool, which would normally be a great thing. But right now, he can’t swim unassisted, and we hate to put his float back on him. He has swim camp this week (from 8:00-11:00 every day) and then another week of lessons next week. I’m hoping that by the end of next week he’ll be in good shape. Until then, I’ll just be watching him like a hawk and trying to reinforce what he’s learned in lessons.

The boys slept great on Saturday night! It was such a great day with just the four of us.

On Sunday after church, Todd went to play golf with a friend, and the boys and I planned to go to the pool, but it was just way too rainy outside. So they took naps, I folded a ton of laundry, and then we played inside until Todd got home. (Yes, Todd played golf in the rain. Such dedication! But he still had fun!)

Todd’s parents offered to feed the boys supper and put them to bed last night so we could go to a movie, and we were just tickled by the offer and couldn’t pass it up! So we went to see The Internship last night. It was really, really cute. Maybe not as funny as Wedding Crashers, but we laughed a lot, and I was looking for my friend’s sister as an extra in the movie since she works at Google.

I hope you all had a great weekend! Do you live for the weekend, like I do? Do you try to soak up as much Daddy time as possible?

Five on Friday

Hallelujah and amen! Friday is here, friends!

I’m linking up again with Darci, Natasha, and friends for Five on Friday! I really enjoyed this link up last week, and thought I’d do it again and take the opportunity to share five things that I’m loving this week!

1. Lennon and Maisy Stella

For the past few weeks, the boys and I have been obsessed with Lennon and Maisy Stella. If I need a little pick-me-up, I just go to their You Tube channel and listen to their perfect harmonies. I may never hear the Lumineers again without wishing it was Lennon and Maisy singing instead. And I really like the Lumineers!

I just think these girls are fantastic, and I love them on Nashville.

Their cover of “Call Your Girlfriend” is just fantastic! Enjoy!

2. Oh The Places You’ll Go

A few weeks ago, I repinned this pin, which also happened to get repinned a few times. But anyway… the idea is that you get a copy of a good “life” book for your kids. I like Dr. Seuss’s, “Oh The Places You’ll Go.” So I got a copy of the book for Hudson and Hayes, and on the last day of school I asked their teachers to all sign the inside of the book and write messages to the boys.

I just love this idea so much, and the idea is that all of their teachers from now until they finish high school can sign the book! (Mel from The Larson Lingo also blogged about this yesterday and she did it for her kids, too.)

3. A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet by Sophie Hudson

So Boo Mama’s book is finally out! And I can tell you that if I have any moments of free time this weekend I will be reading this book! I just love Sophie’s writing voice and love her stories of the south and of family. She writes with so much heart and humor. Get this book!

4. Swim Lessons

Hudson had swim lessons this week. He did a fantastic job! This is his fourth summer to take them from the same guy and this year he wasn’t even remotely scared or nervous. We still have one more week of lessons and I am just so excited to see how well he does at the end of that week! I forgot my big camera at lessons yesterday and I only have a couple of not-so-great iPhone photos.

5. Vitamin C- Graduation

I was texting with my friend, Kristen, last night and we were sharing our mutual love for Carrie Underwood’s new song, “See You Again.” (A seriously fantastic song.) And we thought it was so smart of her to time the release with graduation time, because the lyrics are perfect for a graduation song.

When I finished high school in 2000 (I still want to say it like Conan O’Brien and sing, “In the year 2000.”), the song “Graduation” by Vitamin C was very popular. I mean…. I really have no words. I am pretty sure we thought it was a good song, and now I’m just rolling my eyes at my 17-year-old self. What unfortunate music choices we had.

What was the graduation song on the radio when you graduated? Our class exited the graduation auditorium to Jimmy Buffett’s “Changes in Attitudes, Changes in Latitudes.”
