an unexpected, beautiful tribe

Today’s post was written by my dear friend, Ellen. Ellen blogs at Sweetwater and her words and heart flow so beautifully and effortlessly together in her writing. When Ellen speaks (yes, she’s now a speaker, too!) and writes and prays with you, I see the Lord in her. I hear the Lord in her words. He has done a beautiful work in Ellen’s heart and she shares it. I had the incredible privilege of coming together every Tuesday night this summer with a group of women at Ellen’s house to study the Word. Ellen tells that story beautifully in today’s post.

(And if you were considering going to Influence, but you’re on the fence about it, please go. Ellen will be there as a community leader with many other fabulous community leaders who will be there to encourage you. And hug you!)

On a Tuesday night in early June I welcomed twelve women into my home to read, study the Word and fellowship. It was a beautiful night. We laughed and cried and my heart felt like it might explode right there. It was a far cry from the defeat I’d been feeling just a few months earlier as I sat in the pew on a Sunday morning.

I’m the introverted type. My list of friends is short but deep and, even though I’m 30something now, I still struggle with insecurity about that. I have the most lovely and wonderful friends. Sometimes I forget to remember that. I have a little hamster wheel in my brain just for friendship insecurities: I don’t have enough; I’m not good at them; I try too hard; I don’t have a group.

Instead of having a group that I do absolutely everything with, I have friendships scattered throughout my little life. It’s a bit of story woven through, how I have remnants of college and being newly married and a new mama and a school mama and serving and writing all wrapped up in my friendships. And I forget to remember how great that is.

So. On a Sunday morning in a wooden pew with my eyes pinched tight so tears wouldn’t overflow, I decided to lean into how friendship looks for me right now. It wasn’t my idea. It was His.

I sent emails, facebook messages and texts. I wanted to know? Would all of these women like to meet for just two months at my house? We would study something together and we would get down to the rough and raw of real fellowship (at least, I hoped).

I was afraid. Afraid that everyone would say no. Afraid that I would pick a dumb book. Afraid that it would be too awkward.

And then that first night in June happened and I sat there in my den as fat tears of laughter and joy rolled down my cheeks. And then another night when I heard a “Me, too” from woman to woman. And then another night as I listened to how God was taking deep hurt and turning it into hope.

Over and over again, I’ve been so thankful for this group of women. If I have a tribe, surely they are it. They may be gathered from all different corners but they are God’s faithfulness to me.

I had been wading through discontent and insecurity. With a gentle nudge, God asked me to just do something about it. It hasn’t changed much about my life, this group. But it’s changed the way I see it. That’s what He’s in the business of doing: revealing beauty where we see none. I’m so thankful for it.

reads for your weekend

Happy Saturday, y’all!

We are beach-bound today. Our car is full. Our bags are packed. Our expectations are high and I am prepared to just go with the flow and soak up every second of fun with my family.

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been able to post some of my favorite blog posts that I’ve read recently. I’ve got a fun list of things for you to read this weekend! This is always one of my favorite things to post each week because I know that I love finding new (to me) blogs to read, and I hope you do, too!

Fifty Two Shades of Shay: What I wear/read/take on a trip from Shay at The Shull Family

Shay is the queen of travel and her travel tips never ever disappoint. In this post, she shares the way she packs for vacations, what she reads on vacation, and other fun tips on how to pack and how to travel. I just love her tips and I know that Shay and I would travel well together!

Good Idea: Balloon Party Cooler from Adventures in Renovating a Brooklyn Limestone

Well if this isn’t just the cutest idea of the year, I don’t know what is. I’m dying over the cuteness. So now you have to go check it out!

By God’s Grace from When in Doubt, Add More Salt

My sweet college friend, Jenn, wrote this beautiful, honest post about finding herself in a balance rut. All moms should read this.

You’re More Important Than You Know from Holley Gerth

Oh, this post spoke right to my heart. I loved every single word so much. I love how Holley talks about the beauty in the quiet and how God calls us to live a quiet life. And we are important, even though we may feel insignificant in our daily roles.

A Moment of Grace from The Tichenor Family

Meredith wrote such an honest post about her struggles with potty training, and her struggles with having patience. And I know that patience is something that so many of us lack, myself included. I just loved her honesty and the sweet story she tells of the love for her precious son.

With football season starting back up this month, a few of my five items are all about football!

-ONE-

About a year ago, I was introduced to the super adorable line of boys’ collegiate apparel called JV Clothiers. We are big time Gamecock fans in our house and Hudson and Hayes need their own cute, preppy version of Gamecock gear. And it is SO hard to find cute things for them to wear besides a seriously oversized jersey.

Isn’t that just the cutest? And one of the owners of JV Clothiers is a sorority sister of mine from Louisiana Tech! (AXO) They have so many great schools represented and are always adding more each season. You can shop online or find a retailer near you.

This really doesn’t need any words, right? Love it.

-THREE-

Okay, this is old. But we can’t think of football season without thinking about little 19 month old Hudson and “interviewing” him one night after the BCS national championship game.

-FOUR-

We are bound for Orange Beach, Alabama tomorrow! We are all so excited. But Hudson is the most excited! It’s our last little hoo-rah for the summer. It’s one more week to intentionally leave the worries behind. Drop the to-do lists at the door. And quit worrying about nonsense. And just let go and be carefree for the week!

-FIVE-

I decided to join Lara Casey’s #intentionalAugust project this month, and I ordered Lara Casey’s Power Sheets. The past year has been an interesting one for our family. We’ve had so many changes and everything has always felt temporary. And even though we are building a house, it’s not finished yet. And our “temporary” isn’t so temporary anymore. But I have to buckle down, get organized, get settled, and get busy! I’ve felt disorganized and just like I’m floating along in “temporary” for so long. I’m excited about an #intentionalAugust.

bringing the magic and memories to a new generation

One of my favorite things about having two little boys so close in age is the seemingly instant friendship that comes through brotherhood. Hudson and Hayes are at the age where they play so well together, and they often refer to their brother as their best friend. This thrills me.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with the boys and introduce them to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. They were already big fans of Winnie the Pooh. We have tons of Pooh and Friends figurines all over the house, and ‘Pooh Bear’ was among Hayes’ first phrases.

I can remember watching the VHS of the Winnie the Pooh movie as a child. I loved the fantasy world of the Hundred Acre Woods and the friendship that Christopher Robin shares with Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Rabbit, and all the other friends in the woods.

I first watched the movie when we lived on a street full of other young families in Baton Rouge. It was our first house, and we would move around a lot after that. But I can remember living on that street and making friends with the other girls that lived across the street or next door. It was a different time. We could go in and out of each other’s houses and wave hello to the mothers as we dashed back to our friends’ bedroom to play with dolls. Or we’d just go outside and ride bikes until dark.

Moving away to a new town was hard, even to a seven-year-old. But I instantly made friends with my next door neighbor. We were school classmates, next door neighbors, and we developed a friendship when she invited me over to jump on her new trampoline in their backyard. The simplicity of Winnie the Pooh brings back so many sweet memories. The characters are there for one another. They share with each other and look out for each other. Pooh and Piglet would do anything for each other, and the sweet stories in this movie are exactly what I want my boys to see as a sweet model of friendship.

I’m thankful for the friends I made through my lifetime as my family moved around, but I’m also so excited that my boys will always have each other. That constant best friend, who lives in the room next door. And in my case, we may have moved and friends may have changed, but just like Pooh and Christopher Robin and all the other friends of the Hundred Acre Woods, the memories of those friendships last a lifetime. They sustain distance and time and changes. The sound of my boys’ laughter as Pooh gets stuck because he ate too much honey is a beautiful reminder that the magic of the Hundred Acre Wood is timeless, and the adventures will live on forever.
