Erin Condren Life Planner Link Up

I’m linking up today with Meredith from The Sweet T Family for an Erin Condren Life Planner link up. Even though I already showed y’all my Life Planner the other day, I wanted to link up with Meredith.

I loved my Life Planner this past year. I used it every single day and took it almost everywhere with me. There were some things I wished were different, like the thickness, and I wanted laminated tabs.

And Erin Condren and her team listened to all of their customer feedback and made some fantastic updates to this year’s Life Planner.

I chose a 12 month Life Planner so it’s not quite as thick. And I am always ready for a new calendar after a year anyway. You can choose a 12 or 18 month version and have it start at whatever month you prefer.

I chose the Mod Morocco design and had the colors customized. I went with teal and coral for my colors. Instead of having my monogram like the design shows, I asked if I could just have it say “Erin” instead. I’m a little weird about monogram styles and I just thought it would be cuter with just “Erin.”

The metal coil binding is the perfect update for the new Life Planner, so it won’t bend and will hold its shape when you put it in your purse.

The laminated tabs are so great! Such a simple change that will help make it last all year.

In the back there is another “Keep it Together” folder to hold pieces of loose paper and the personalized notepad. I ordered the personalized notepads again and I know I’ll use them up in just a few months, like I did last year.

This year’s notepads also have little adhesive tabs on the back so you can attach it the inside of the back of the Life Planner– or the front.

There is also a cute new little clip-in ruler to help hold your place and use as a straight edge or ruler.

And of course, like last year, there is the little pouch in the back for holding any extras. And the sweet folks at Erin Condren sent more personalized gift labels again. They’re so cute! I need more of these!

I also ordered the Erin Condren pens, but they haven’t arrived yet. I’m super excited to try them out!

My other favorite pens to use with the Life Planner are the Paper Mate Flair (felt tip), the Paper Mate Liquid Flair, the Pilot G2, and the Uniball Vision Elite. And I love getting all of these pen sets in the multi-colored packs.

I can’t wait to see what other Life Planner covers everyone chose!

Adventures in Baby-Naming

When I found out I was pregnant with our first child, one of the first things I started thinking of was names. I looked at clothes and I thought of names. To me, naming a baby is the first big parenting decision you have to make. It’s kind of a huge responsibility, right?

We always knew what we wanted to call our first son, but I wasn’t really sure about a middle name. I had no idea what I wanted to name a girl. I agonized over what we would name a girl.

For a boy or a girl, I just really wanted to avoid the top ten most popular names in the United States. I didn’t want a “weird” name, but I didn’t want the most common name in the kindergarten class. I had daily chats on the phone with my mom as we went through our family trees and thought of different name combinations for a potential little girl. And then we arranged different first and middle names around the boy name we’d chosen.

Of course, after all of the choices and time spent on deciding on a girl name, I found out I was pregnant with a little boy. We knew that we wanted to call him Hudson, but we decided to keep the name choice a secret. My dad’s name is Hudson and his mom’s maiden name was Hudson. I wanted to use a family name and I wanted to use a name that I loved.

We decided on John Matthew Hudson Carroll for his official name. I like four names for a boy. “John” was the name of a cousin I loved dearly, and “Matthew” is Todd’s first name. So we had our boy’s name all set. But then we had to keep it a secret.

We chose not to share the name because it was nice to have something for just us. It was also something we decided because I knew that as long as no one knew his name they wouldn’t criticize it. People have a tendency to say some really thoughtless things to expecting parents about their baby names of choice.

We figured that if no one knew the name, they couldn’t say anything negative. After the baby was born, would someone really tell you they hated your baby’s name after they’d met your baby and held your baby? It’s a lot harder to criticize a name when the sweet baby is sleeping on your shoulder, right?

For the most part, we never heard anything negative about Hudson’s name. But it didn’t really matter. We love his name and that’s all that matters.

When I found out I was pregnant again, I was all set to use our girl name. And then we found out we were having another boy. But I’d already named a boy and didn’t have another favorite boy name.

I knew I wanted a one-syllable name with four or five letters. I have no idea why. So I had a very short list of names that I loved that fit that criteria. And only one of those names started with an “H.” I had already put the letter “H” on so many little outfits, pillows, blankets, and cups that it made sense to use another “H” name.

But the trouble was that Todd was shooting down all of my baby name ideas, but like most men, he didn’t have any suggestions either. So… we were back to my list. And I wanted another “H” baby.

So we decided on Hayes. I was so excited about his little name. It took a longer time for Todd to get used to Hayes’s name. Because Hudson’s name was such an easy, quick decision, it was much harder for us to decide on a name for our second boy. We both just couldn’t agree.

Hayes’s middle name is Claxton, which is Todd’s mom’s maiden name. We love being able to use family names as much as possible.

We didn’t keep Hayes’s name a secret for long, and it was actually really nice when we let his name out of the bag.

I still have my girl name ready to go in case we ever have another baby. I love thinking about possible future baby names. And we have another boy “H” name just in case. You just never know when you might need it! (But not any time soon, I promise.)

How about you? Did you keep your baby names a secret? Did you have specific criteria when choosing a name? Do you have any baby names on “reserve” for future babies?

just another brain dump

1. I’m going to wish a great big happy birthday party day to Jack and Nina! I wish I was there celebrating!

2. We had a really fun play date with my friends Hillary and Nikki and their children on Friday. So much fun getting together with old friends and their kids!

3. There are parts of potty training that make me miss the days of diapers. What’s so bad about diapers, really? Besides the price? It’s a contained mess, but “contained” is the key word here.

4. Having said that, I am proud to say that Hudson has only had 3 “wet” accidents since Monday and many, many successes with the reward of jelly beans.

5. My Life Planner arrived! And I just love it. I chose a teal and coral cover on the Mod Morocco design and had them use “Erin” instead of my monogram.

6. When I visit Indiana, there are only two or three things on my “must” list. And one of them is that I must eat Pizza King. Can I get an amen?

7. I took my first Zumba class on Thursday night. Now one of my “musts” when I visit Indiana will be to go to the Zumba class that my friends teach. I had so much fun!

8. And we totally Zumba’d to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know,” so I was basically in Zumba heaven, if there is such a place.

9. If I have to watch White Fang one more time, I may scream.

10. Hayes is a fan of the baby pool. In our next neighborhood, there will be a swimming pool. I have water babies!

11. I picked up these cute little paper clips and binder clips at Target today. Aren’t they so cute?

12 .It’s supposed to be 88 degrees tomorrow in Indiana. A nice change from 103 degree days. It’s practically winter!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Summer with Baby

Living in the South, summertime walks a very fine line. We want to make the most of the great weather, but the “great weather” really only lasts a few hours early in the morning and a few hours just before and right after the sun goes down. Hudson and Hayes were both born in the summer. With a six-week recovery time after giving birth, we spent a whole lot of time inside just trying to stay out of the heat. We saved our outdoor activities for early in the morning or much later in the evening. If we needed to run an errand during the day, we made sure they were all indoor errands.

But there is a time when everyone needs a little bit of fresh air. To make the most of being outside in the summer in the South, we’d load up in the stroller at around 8:30 a.m. and go for a walk for about an hour. I tried to time the stroll to start right after a feeding, and then the baby would always fall asleep early into the walk. It was great for me to just be outside to get some fresh air, and great for the baby to get some fresh air too. When we’d go outside, we’d put Hudson or Hayes in a plain short-sleeved or sleeveless onesie. No footies, long sleeves, or long pants were needed. We needed to make sure that their soft baby skin could breathe, so we didn’t put on clothes that would make them any warmer than necessary.

When Hayes was about 3 months old, we went to the beach. I was worried about how to keep Hayes cool while Hudson played. We got Hayes a little tent for babies that has extra sun protection coverage. The tent also had a great floor to keep the sand off of him. When it was time for Hayes to nap, we just laid him down on the floor of the tent and he went right to sleep. We also had a tiny little battery-operated clip-on fan that we put in the tent with him so he’d have some breeze.

What are your solutions for making the most of summer with your baby? How do you help your baby beat the heat?
