raising a sensitive son

I’ve talked so many times about being a boy mom. So much of it has just come naturally to me, but there are other things that don’t.

I know things about girls that I don’t really know about boys. I know that if I had a daughter, I could help prepare her for the world of mean girls. I could try to help her not to become consumed with body image.

But with boys, I know that there will be many times later in my boys’ lives that I hear, “Mom, you just don’t understand.” Because, it’s true. I don’t. I won’t. But I will try.

Hudson can be very sensitive. And I do love his sweet little tender heart. I’ve observed him in a room with other kids many times. And I notice the way he clams up when someone takes his place in line. Or when someone snatches a toy from him. Or if another child argues with him or tells him no.

He gets embarrassed. He ducks his head. He looks like he’s going to cry. He doesn’t fight back.

And as his mother, I want to run scoop him up and snatch that toy right back and give it to him. Which just isn’t the right thing to do, either.

But he’s sensitive. He just is. And I know that this will change and he will be less sensitive as he gets older, but I don’t think it will completely go away.

There are times when I want to say to Hudson, “Go back to your friend and take your toy right back!” I want to teach him to toughen up, so he isn’t the one always getting his feelings hurt.

I don’t want him to be teased for being sensitive, but I want him to feel the freedom to be himself. I want him to stand up for himself and not be pushed around when he gets older and kids take on more serious issues and the teasing becomes more relentless.

And mostly I want to teach Hudson what it means to be Christ-like. I pray every single day that he will make a decision to follow Jesus and want a heart like His.

These are the parts of parenthood that I love and the parts that terrify me. I love that Hudson’s little personality becomes more and more obvious through his actions every day. We learn a little bit more about who he is and who he’s going to be. He’s hilarious. He’s smart. He’s quick and he’s sweet. Hudson can be territorial, but he really just wants to have a very good time. He loves to laugh and he is just so kind-hearted and caring.

I love that he is always looking out for his friends. And one of our prayers is that the Lord will put others in his life who are like him. Who complement him and life him up. And I pray that as his family, that we will help him grow and he’ll always know that his parents and brother are on his team, no matter what.

And his little tender heart may turn him into everyone’s best friend and it may cause his little heart to be broken a few times along the way. I don’t know. But I can only pray that we do our very best to show him the Way to confidence.

10 Tips to Make the Most of Your Time in the Kitchen

I love to cook. It is one of my favorite things to do. But there are only so many hours in the day, and every day doesn’t allow for me to cook gourmet meals. Sometimes I only have thirty minutes to get it together. And there are days when I just don’t feel like cooking.

It’s because I love to cook that I don’t want it to become a chore. I like to be prepared every week for what I’m going to make for supper during the week. I like to have all of my groceries on hand and I don’t want to make any last minute trips to the grocery store–especially with two small children. I want to enjoy my time in the kitchen!

So I came up with a little list of 10 tips to make the most of your time in the kitchen. Some of these are time-saving tips and some are sanity-saving tips.

1. Create a binder of recipes with your favorite go-to meals that are the easiest to make. I have a binder that has all of my favorite recipes. Some of these are torn out of magazines, some have been passed down from my grandmother, mother and aunts, and some are printed from websites. But these are my favorite meals that are the easiest for me to make.

2. Make sure that at least half of these are 5-ingredient recipes. For more 5-ingredient recipes, go to Cooking Light. Having 5-ingredient recipes cuts down on prep time and hopefully on cooking time. Save the fancy meals for nights when you have more time and you don’t have as much going on. Getting food on the table is one of our nightly chores, but it’s much better when we all enjoy the process.

3. Create a meal plan over the weekend. I use a great printable in my home organization binder to create my meal plan. I sit down with my recipe binder and sometimes bring out some cookbooks if I feel like getting more creative for a special night. I try to find common ingredients so I can cut back on my grocery bill. Extra tip: While you plan your meals, make a grocery list and organize your grocery list by the way the store is laid out. This will help you save time while you’re shopping.

4. Grocery shop on Sunday. I like to make sure that I only have to go to the grocery store one time every week. This helps me save money and it ensures that I am ready for every night of the week before the week even starts. By doing it on Sunday, I can leave the boys at home with Todd so I can get through the grocery store faster.

5. Prep your meal in the morning. One of the ways I can cut back on the time it takes to prepare our meal every night is by prepping the meal in the morning when I wake up. I get the vegetables chopped and put them back in the refrigerator. Or I peel potatoes or put the food in the crock pot.

6. Have at least one crock pot meal in your meal plan. The crock pot makes life and dinner time so easy. Use it!

7. Wash the dishes as you go or ask your husband to do the dishes while you cook. If Todd is home while I’m cooking, he’s my dish man. It makes me feel less overwhelmed if he’s cleaning up behind me while I’m cooking. Then when we’ve both finished eating, we can relax instead spending another thirty minutes cleaning up.

8. Make 4 freezers meals at the beginning of each month. In case of an emergency, you’ll already have dinner ready to go and you just need to thaw and put it in the oven. Sometimes I have a meeting and Todd is home with the kids. Sometimes we have a day where the boys don’t nap and the last thing I want to do is cook. By having the freezer meals ready, we have a few nights a month where we can take it easy.

9. Let your kids pick one favorite meal per week. This keeps them involved and makes it fun for them, too. And they’ll be more likely to help out with dishes and setting the table. There’s nothing more frustrating than cooking supper for your family and then seeing your kids not eat it. This way they know they had a part in choosing the menu for the week and they know they can look forward to their certain favorite meal.

10. Embrace leftovers. Maybe not three nights of leftovers, but at least once. We’re big into eating our leftovers. Especially if it’s a meal we loved. You don’t want good food to go to waste and we don’t want to be in the kitchen every night. You can spice up your leftovers by turning them into another meal completely.

1. I mentioned on Twitter the other day (and I’m pretty sure I mention this every single summer on my blog) that I really do not like the summer months in the south. I would pick up and move to the Pacific Northwest if there was a job for Todd. And then I’d come back for the fall and winter. Mainly just for football season. But, man, it’s hot!

2. I think I say, “oh man!” a lot because now Hudson says it all the time, too. It’s much cuter when he says it.

3. We tried to go for a walk tonight and take the boys on a ride in the wagon. It was pretty muggy, even at 6:30, but the gnats were terrible. Poor Hayes had gnats all over his face and in his eyes. I felt awful for him. Hudson kept blowing on Hayes’s face trying to get the gnats to leave him alone.

4. I know some people don’t like the way I write the possessive form of Hayes. I like to write “Hayes’s.” It’s the way I learned it and I trust Strunk & White. It’s rule #1. (I also understand that it just comes down to style preference, but Hayes’ and Hayes’s are both correct. I just prefer Hayes’s.)

5. We’ve had some very interested house hunters coming by our house this weekend. We just have our fingers crossed that one of them loves it enough to make us an offer.

6. Relatedly, one of the relatives of one of these house hunters popped by our house today during nap time without a realtor. They just wanted to take a look around so they could give their two cents. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

7. My summer anthem is Pontoon by Little Big Town. What a fun song!

8. Last night, I watched The Bachelorette finale while Todd worked. I had only seen one or two episodes of Emily’s season, but I always like to watch the end. Even though I can’t believe people still want to go on those shows.

9. And we are loving The Newsroom. We’re both totally addicted! At the end of last night’s episode I was crying. The characters are all just so great.

10. I’m getting my hair highlighted and trimmed tomorrow. I really don’t like sitting there for a few hours, but the result is so worth it!

11. Are you following me on Instagram and Pinterest? Here’s my Pinterest link and on Instagram I am “blueeyedbride.”
