Weekend Reading

We have had a fun, busy weekend. The boys are a little under the weather, but that’s just the change in seasons and a little more exposure to germs for ya!

Once again, I’m sharing some of my favorite posts from the last week with all of you. Happy Sunday, friends!

And go Gamecocks! (Sorry, had to sneak that in there!)

taming my tongue… or my blog?

I’ve got a little bit of a case of writer’s block. Nothing in particular really comes to mind, but I know that I’m having a hard time quieting my mind.

It’s hard to focus on small little events and stories because there just seems to be so much noise around. We’ve got political conventions and constant commentary on social media. It’s the beginning of a school year and trying to make sure nothing is forgotten.

Normally, when I have writer’s block, I’ll just crank out a little brain dump and list a few self-depricating things and toss in a little bit of mom snark and… there’s a blog post. Ta-da!

But this has been convicting me lately. I know, for a fact, that a couple of those little “mom snark” posts have hurt people. While that is never my intention, I can say that it is true that I wasn’t even thinking about the possibility of hurting someone. I wasn’t considering others at all.

It’s probably someone who just pops by my blog every so often and doesn’t know me all that well, but it still happens.

A few weeks ago, our pastor spoke from James 3, and taming the tongue. And when he also talked about “taming the tweet” and “taming the blog post” or “taming the Facebook update,” I was frozen.

How many times do I just throw words out there like they don’t matter? Just throwing words out there to have something to say, so people can hear me?

He spoke about how each word should be carefully considered because, written or spoken, our words are lasting. They leave an impression on everyone who hears them or reads them.

And if I write a blog post to joke about the “adventures in motherhood,” I know that my words don’t come from a mean-spirited place. But that doesn’t mean that it didn’t hurt someone who is reading it who desperately longs to be a mother.

I’ve been so convicted by his message, and still find myself just spewing words out there that could be hurtful. And, I know, I’m human. We all struggle with this. With the political comments, the mommy wars, and even SEC football, there’s always something or someone to critique.

But the constant “noise” of social media– having the access to hundreds, thousands of voices at one time through various outlets and apps– is not only noisy, but can be destructive.

I want my words to give life and encouragement. I don’t want to unintentionally hurt. Goodness, I don’t want to intentionally hurt either.

So this is something I’m working on. I have to constantly remind myself to watch it. To step back and think before I speak or write.

Is this something you struggle with, too?

James 3:9-12

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

my little monkeys

The last time I took monkey pictures of Hudson, he was 24 months old. Yikes. And the last time I took one of Hayes, he was 12 months old.

I wanted to do a little update on what they’ve each been up to, so I thought I’d plop them down next to their favorite monkeys for the update.

Hayes is 16 months old. He started “school” this month. He’s going three mornings a week and he has had no trouble adjusting already. He walks right into his class and smiles and just goes on about his business. I’m really excited for him to have some time with other kids, but away from Hudson.

Hayes still isn’t saying a whole lot. He actually had his first real word last week when he whispered “hush” while we were reading Goodnight Moon. I thought my heart would explode. It was the sweetest little sound.

He is a hilarious instigator. He grabs Hudson’s toy and takes off running around the house, just begging Hudson to chase him. It’s so funny to watch them chase each other!

He loves to eat, but has gotten a little bit picky. His favorite books are Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Goodnight Moon, and Birthday Monsters.

He likes to dance and loves to sing “e-i-e-i-o” when we sing Old MacDonald. He’s an adaptable, happy kid and we’re just so thankful for him!

Hudson started five mornings a week of preschool this year. He has always been a fan of school, but I think this year he’s more aware of everything. He understands more about the process of making friends and people becoming buddies. So we’ll see where that takes us. He’s a sensitive soul and can be very shy. He’s super independent and smart, so I’m excited to see how he adapts and grows this year with other children.

He is still off the charts tall! His little belly is pretty much gone, and that’s about the last sign of “baby” that he had. He potty trained like a champ, and we’re so glad to be done with diapers.

He is just hilarious, as most three-year-olds are. Hudson is a true thinker and makes us laugh on a daily basis with the sweet and hilarious things he says. I keep notes in my iPhone of what he said that day just so I won’t forget.

Just a few Hudsonisms….

“Where’s Boudreaux? Oh, he must be around he somewhere.”

“Mommy, I’m never going to do that. Never!” (That one didn’t turn out so well for him.)

“Whatcha doing over there?”

When Hudson back-talked me, Todd said, “Hudson, what do you say to Mommy?” Hudson replied, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy!” (I think Todd wanted him to say he was sorry.)

I asked him to pick up his toys in the next five minutes. He got to work and finished and said, “I did it! Wow, that was a close one!”

“Here we are, guys! We made it!” (He says this when we drive anywhere- grandparents house, the zoo, church, home. He always announces that we made it.)

“Oh, Hayesy-boy.” (Says this to Hayes regularly.)

He likes to ask which is left and which is right, kind of like he’s quizzing us. We play the “left, right” game when we’re driving and Hudson tells us which way to go to get home.

He also likes to ask us if we’re boys or girls. “Mommy, are you a boy or a girl?” After I say that I’m a girl, he says, “That’s right, Mommy! I’m so proud of you!”

Whenever we do anything “right,” Hudson tells us he’s proud of us.

On the way to school this morning, Hudson was looking at a picture of all of us that he was bringing to show his class. He said, “This is my family!”

When he gets in trouble and I tell him not to talk back to me, he says, “Mommy! Stop talking to Hudson that way.”

(He still speaks in the third person sometimes.)

When we watched Fievel on An American Tail, Hudson looked at me and said, “Mommy, I fink I’m gonna cry.” It was very sweet, but very sad. We won’t be watching Fievel again for a while.

He recognizes a handful of sight words from the Meet the Sight Words DVDs and he knows all of his phonics after learning them on the Starfall ABCs app.

So there’s an update on my boys at 3 years and 16 months. They challenge us and make us laugh. We’re so proud of who they’re becoming, and I pray each day for the wisdom to know what in the world I’m doing each day. These spirited youngsters light up my life!

a meet and greet!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this here on the blog yet, but I’m so excited to be attending the Influence conference next month.

When Jessi and Hayley announced that they’d be hosting a conference, I started to get really excited. Because this isn’t just any conference. This is a conference about Jesus, and using our influence that God has given us for Him.

A weekend surrounded by women that I don’t know, but knowing that “our common ground is the Good News?” I can’t think of anything more refreshing or encouraging.

I’m excited to meet so many wonderful ladies, and I’m excited about today’s link up because I’ll have the opportunity to get to know a little bit about all these ladies before the conference next month.

I’m fortunate that the conference is located very near to where my parents live, so they can play with the boys while I go to the Influence Conference in Indianapolis. It’s going to be a great weekend!

Some of the community leaders hosted a link up today for all of the conference registrants to introduce ourselves. So here I go!

THREE things about me:

1. I’m an introvert. Isn’t this what all the bloggers say? But it’s true. Deep down I’m shy, but I’m also friendly and talkative. But my idea of a good time involves a small group of friends just sitting and talking with coffee and a movie that we’ve seen 100 times on in the background. A large room full of people isn’t my cup of tea. So, if I see you, I’ll smile and I’ll say hello because I want to make other people feel comfortable. But I’ll really be super nervous!

2. My husband and I had our first conversation in the frozen foods aisle at Publix. Super romantical.

3. I love pop culture. But I’m not super up to date with the current pop culture. But if we could have a Saved By The Bell or 90210 trivia game, I’d be in heaven. I love tossing a random movie quote into conversation or just breaking into song when it seems appropriate. I mean, is that ever appropriate? It’s just the way I was raised. When my family gets together we have a lot of fun, but I think my husband thinks we’re weird.

TWO things I’m looking forward to about the conference:

1. Being encouraged. I’m excited to meet other bloggers that are similar to me. We have one, huge, commonality. And that is going to be so encouraging.

2. Meeting everyone and seeing a few familiar faces!

ONE thing I can’t leave home without:

1. iPhone. It’s a common answer, but it’s the honest answer. I do not like leaving home without my iPhone. And to think, I protested exchanging my BlackBerry for an iPhone.

So, yay! I can’t wait to meet all of you and visit your blogs through the link up! See y’all soon!
