Build 'Em Up: Mom Groups

We’re enjoying a beautiful, relaxing week of family beach time down in Orange Beach, Alabama this week. This is one of my favorite places on earth, and it’s always what comes to mind when I think of “family vacation.”

For most of this week, I’ll be having guest bloggers. I decided that it would be really fun to include women (bloggers and non-bloggers) that I know in real life. Yesterday, my friend Ellen shared with you about how God laid it on her heart to bring together her many friendships and start a Bible study group for the summer.

This week’s Build ‘Em Up is about something very similar to Ellen’s post from yesterday.

It’s all about mom groups.

One of the first things I realized as a new mom was that motherhood could either be incredibly lonely and alienating, or I could find a way to make friends with other moms and have a stronger sense of community through this incredible road called motherhood.

And for over a year, it was much more isolating and lonely than it was all about community. I didn’t have any other mom friends. And, let’s face it. We change when we become moms. We can deny it and try to hang on to our old selves. But becoming completely responsible for another person, being fully overwhelmed with love for another person, and losing sleep and basing all of your decisions on another person’s needs will change you.

This week is supposed to be all about mom groups, but I’m honestly not a part of a formal mom group. I don’t attend MOPS or a formal playgroup. But I have some incredible friendships that I am so proud of.

And I’m proud of them because I’ve worked at them. I have the best friends I could ever ask for, and I’m so proud that these women are my friends.

Most of my friendships began at church. I have friendships from all different parts of my life in our church. Choir, children’s ministry, Sunday school, my kids’ friends moms. And it’s okay with me that these people aren’t all a part of one big play group.

About six months ago, a group of girls from church decided that we wanted to make it a monthly thing to get together one Sunday night per month for a true girls night. And once a month, we go to dinner or go to a movie and aren’t rushing home. Our husbands are able to be at home with the kids because it’s a Sunday night, and we’re not rushed. We fellowship and share and catch up. I look forward to it every month!

We attend Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and for the past couple of years I was a part of a Moms’ Bible Study on Tuesday mornings. We met for a little over an hour, and the study was all about topics that related to moms. And childcare was provided!  I’m not able to attend this study anymore because of scheduling conflicts, but if you live in the Columbia area and would like to attend, please call the church! They would love to have you!

Another way that I met a few of my very best friends was from the boys’ preschool. Between pick up and drop off, and calling and scheduling play dates, I’ve gotten to know quite a few of the parents of my kids’ friends very well.

These pockets of friendships aren’t formally organized, but they work. And my biggest piece of advice is to just call someone. Invite someone to play. Invite a group of people to play. If you’re looking for those “mom friends,” then make it happen!

I know there’s the risk of rejection, but I promise that everyone feels that way. And God loves it when we fellowship and have community. He wants that for us!

That mom that you want to invite to the park with her little boy is probably feeling nervous about extending the invitation to someone, too. In our house, we never turn down a play date! So just call, email, or send a text and extend the invitation. It could be the beginning of an amazing friendship!

We’d love for you to link up with us today to share about your mom groups. In the link tool, make sure you include your city and state so others can find you and make connections!

reads for your weekend

Happy Saturday, y’all!

We are beach-bound today. Our car is full. Our bags are packed. Our expectations are high and I am prepared to just go with the flow and soak up every second of fun with my family.

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been able to post some of my favorite blog posts that I’ve read recently. I’ve got a fun list of things for you to read this weekend! This is always one of my favorite things to post each week because I know that I love finding new (to me) blogs to read, and I hope you do, too!

Fifty Two Shades of Shay: What I wear/read/take on a trip from Shay at The Shull Family

Shay is the queen of travel and her travel tips never ever disappoint. In this post, she shares the way she packs for vacations, what she reads on vacation, and other fun tips on how to pack and how to travel. I just love her tips and I know that Shay and I would travel well together!

Good Idea: Balloon Party Cooler from Adventures in Renovating a Brooklyn Limestone

Well if this isn’t just the cutest idea of the year, I don’t know what is. I’m dying over the cuteness. So now you have to go check it out!

By God’s Grace from When in Doubt, Add More Salt

My sweet college friend, Jenn, wrote this beautiful, honest post about finding herself in a balance rut. All moms should read this.

You’re More Important Than You Know from Holley Gerth

Oh, this post spoke right to my heart. I loved every single word so much. I love how Holley talks about the beauty in the quiet and how God calls us to live a quiet life. And we are important, even though we may feel insignificant in our daily roles.

A Moment of Grace from The Tichenor Family

Meredith wrote such an honest post about her struggles with potty training, and her struggles with having patience. And I know that patience is something that so many of us lack, myself included. I just loved her honesty and the sweet story she tells of the love for her precious son.

Five on Friday

Yay for Five on Friday! Today’s list is pretty random, but there are som fun thins that I wanted to share! I’m linking up with Darci and friends today. You should do it, too!

With football season starting back up this month, a few of my five items are all about football!

-ONE-

About a year ago, I was introduced to the super adorable line of boys’ collegiate apparel called JV Clothiers. We are big time Gamecock fans in our house and Hudson and Hayes need their own cute, preppy version of Gamecock gear. And it is SO hard to find cute things for them to wear besides a seriously oversized jersey.

Isn’t that just the cutest? And one of the owners of JV Clothiers is a sorority sister of mine from Louisiana Tech! (AXO) They have so many great schools represented and are always adding more each season. You can shop online or find a retailer near you.

This really doesn’t need any words, right? Love it.

-THREE-

Okay, this is old. But we can’t think of football season without thinking about little 19 month old Hudson and “interviewing” him one night after the BCS national championship game.

-FOUR-

We are bound for Orange Beach, Alabama tomorrow! We are all so excited. But Hudson is the most excited! It’s our last little hoo-rah for the summer. It’s one more week to intentionally leave the worries behind. Drop the to-do lists at the door. And quit worrying about nonsense. And just let go and be carefree for the week!

-FIVE-

I decided to join Lara Casey’s #intentionalAugust project this month, and I ordered Lara Casey’s Power Sheets. The past year has been an interesting one for our family. We’ve had so many changes and everything has always felt temporary. And even though we are building a house, it’s not finished yet. And our “temporary” isn’t so temporary anymore. But I have to buckle down, get organized, get settled, and get busy! I’ve felt disorganized and just like I’m floating along in “temporary” for so long. I’m excited about an #intentionalAugust.

bringing the magic and memories to a new generation

One of my favorite things about having two little boys so close in age is the seemingly instant friendship that comes through brotherhood. Hudson and Hayes are at the age where they play so well together, and they often refer to their brother as their best friend. This thrills me.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with the boys and introduce them to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. They were already big fans of Winnie the Pooh. We have tons of Pooh and Friends figurines all over the house, and ‘Pooh Bear’ was among Hayes’ first phrases.

I can remember watching the VHS of the Winnie the Pooh movie as a child. I loved the fantasy world of the Hundred Acre Woods and the friendship that Christopher Robin shares with Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Rabbit, and all the other friends in the woods.

I first watched the movie when we lived on a street full of other young families in Baton Rouge. It was our first house, and we would move around a lot after that. But I can remember living on that street and making friends with the other girls that lived across the street or next door. It was a different time. We could go in and out of each other’s houses and wave hello to the mothers as we dashed back to our friends’ bedroom to play with dolls. Or we’d just go outside and ride bikes until dark.

Moving away to a new town was hard, even to a seven-year-old. But I instantly made friends with my next door neighbor. We were school classmates, next door neighbors, and we developed a friendship when she invited me over to jump on her new trampoline in their backyard. The simplicity of Winnie the Pooh brings back so many sweet memories. The characters are there for one another. They share with each other and look out for each other. Pooh and Piglet would do anything for each other, and the sweet stories in this movie are exactly what I want my boys to see as a sweet model of friendship.

I’m thankful for the friends I made through my lifetime as my family moved around, but I’m also so excited that my boys will always have each other. That constant best friend, who lives in the room next door. And in my case, we may have moved and friends may have changed, but just like Pooh and Christopher Robin and all the other friends of the Hundred Acre Woods, the memories of those friendships last a lifetime. They sustain distance and time and changes. The sound of my boys’ laughter as Pooh gets stuck because he ate too much honey is a beautiful reminder that the magic of the Hundred Acre Wood is timeless, and the adventures will live on forever.
