what we did on our summer vacation

Today is officially the last day of our summer vacation. Hudson starts preschool tomorrow and Hayes will be going, too, though his isn’t technically preschool.

I’m excited for Hudson because he loves school, but I’m especially excited for Hayes to have an opportunity to be around other kids a couple days a week and have an opportunity to be away from his brother.

We’ve had a really great summer. At times it was busy and full of activity and at times we took it really easy and just hung out at home. I’m thankful for the summer I had with my boys, and I wanted to be able to look back and see all that we did in a nutshell.

We went fishing on our friends’ farm and got to hang out with horses.

We went to Greenville to celebrate the Smith family and Mary Brooks’s miraculous little life, and saw lots of sweet friends when we were there.

I taught 3 year olds at VBS with Anna and we had a great time hanging out with Gracie and Mary Elizabeth all summer.

Hudson had a great time at swim lessons.

Uncle Walker came to visit for a week.

We visited the Charleston Aquarium with RC and PC.

We celebrated Hudson’s 3rd birthday at the beach!

We spent a week at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina with RC, PC, KK and Poppie.

We said “goodbye” to Hayes’s doc band and the wonderful therapists who helped him.

We potty-trained Hudson!

We spent two weeks in Indiana with KK and Poppie at their house. We celebrated 4th of July there.

I went to Atlanta for Market with Nina and my mom, and got to have dinner with these lovely ladies.

We spent a week in Orange Beach, Alabama with KK, Poppie, and Uncle Walker

We had family photos taken by Sarah Lyn Photography while we were in Orange Beach

Todd and I went to the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island

And, of course, we had so many lazy days at home just hanging out and learning to share.

I hope you all had a great summer and are excited about the start of a new year!

Happy birthday, Poppie!

Today’s post is dedicated to my wonderful daddy on his birthday.

My dad is the funniest guy I know.

He never meets a stranger.

He loves the Lord and still spends time drawing nearer and nearer to God each day, wanting to learn more.

He is a great mix of silly and serious.

He is my son’s namesake.

He loves his family, and especially loves his grandsons.

He still loves his work.

He makes everyone feel comfortable and welcome.

He adores and cherishes my mom.

He carved Ernie and Bert pumpkins for my brother and me when we were kids, and maybe he’ll even do that for Hudson and Hayes someday.

He loves making the most of each day. He’s an early riser and likes to get out and see and do.

He also enjoys a good nap.

My mom, brother, Todd, Hudson, Hayes, and I are all so lucky to have my dad in our lives. We’re so thankful for him.

Happy birthday, Poppie! We love you!

our trip to the PGA Championship

Well, I’m back. Back from “La La Land,” I keep saying. My head has been in the clouds for over a week now and it’s time to snap out of it. Our vacation was absolutely wonderful, but now I have to face reality and get back to our regularly scheduled life.

On Saturday, we made the full 9.5 hour drive back from Orange Beach, Alabama. When we got to town, we dropped the boys off at Todd’s parents’ house.

A few weeks before we left for the beach, we were given the opportunity to attend the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, and we were invited to a skybox on the 18th hole. We hated to pass up such a fun opportunity, and Todd’s parents were so nice to keep the boys for us on Saturday night and Sunday.

After we dropped the boys off on Saturday, we came home and unloaded the car and started the unpacking process. We haven’t been alone in our house overnight in years. It was the strangest feeling!

On Sunday morning, we got up early and hit the road. We stopped by Starbucks on the way out of town because we were out of coffee creamer and we really wanted some coffee.

Kiawah Island is about 20 miles away from Charleston. So it takes us a solid two hours to get there on a normal day. But with all the PGA traffic, it took closer to 3.5 hours to get there.

But look at the wonderful drive. The road that leads to the island is just so beautiful!

When we were invited, of course the first thing I thought was, “What am I supposed to wear?” I had never attended a major PGA event before, and since we were going to be in a skybox for some of the day, I wasn’t really sure what to wear. I opted for a lightweight dress and flat sandals so I could stay cool and my feet would be comfortable.

Todd is a huge golf fan. He loves to play, he loves to watch on TV, and he especially loves Phil Mickelson because he’s a fellow lefty. We had a great time yesterday. Cameras weren’t allowed inside, but I had my iPhone for pictures.

And we had such a spectacular view of the 18th hole and the ocean!

It was a hot day, but we enjoyed some yummy food. We saw some incredibly talented golfers finish up the PGA Championship on the 18th hole. We got to spend a gorgeous day outside looking at the Atlantic Ocean from Kiawah Island. And I got to meet the governor! I’d never experienced anything like this, so I’m really grateful for the opportunity.

The best part of the day was getting to end our vacation week just the two of us. It’s rare that Todd and I get not just one, but two nights, to ourselves to be able to catch up and go do something fun together. (And I ran into my dear friend Misty when we caught the shuttle bus back to our cars!)

When we left Kiawah, we drove into Charleston for the night. We stayed downtown and walked over for a delicious low country supper before crashing in the hotel room after watching The Newsroom. It was a perfect weekend for a couple of tired parents!

How how you all been? I promise there are tons of beach pictures coming soon! (Maybe that’s not a good thing? Ha!)

just another brain dump

1. I’m going to wish a great big happy birthday party day to Jack and Nina! I wish I was there celebrating!

2. We had a really fun play date with my friends Hillary and Nikki and their children on Friday. So much fun getting together with old friends and their kids!

3. There are parts of potty training that make me miss the days of diapers. What’s so bad about diapers, really? Besides the price? It’s a contained mess, but “contained” is the key word here.

4. Having said that, I am proud to say that Hudson has only had 3 “wet” accidents since Monday and many, many successes with the reward of jelly beans.

5. My Life Planner arrived! And I just love it. I chose a teal and coral cover on the Mod Morocco design and had them use “Erin” instead of my monogram.

6. When I visit Indiana, there are only two or three things on my “must” list. And one of them is that I must eat Pizza King. Can I get an amen?

7. I took my first Zumba class on Thursday night. Now one of my “musts” when I visit Indiana will be to go to the Zumba class that my friends teach. I had so much fun!

8. And we totally Zumba’d to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know,” so I was basically in Zumba heaven, if there is such a place.

9. If I have to watch White Fang one more time, I may scream.

10. Hayes is a fan of the baby pool. In our next neighborhood, there will be a swimming pool. I have water babies!

11. I picked up these cute little paper clips and binder clips at Target today. Aren’t they so cute?

12 .It’s supposed to be 88 degrees tomorrow in Indiana. A nice change from 103 degree days. It’s practically winter!

I hope you all have a great weekend!
