Life Lately

Just a little catch up on our last couple of weeks around here.

Hayes was up all night coughing one night and then tested positive for the flu the next morning. And it had him down! He slept all day that first day, but the Tamiflu kicked in and he was on the mend quickly. He stayed home and away from other kids for five days and was so ready to get back to school! The Tamiflu did, however, make him have some wild behavior in the middle of the night. I’d heard that hallucinations could be a side effect of Tamiflu (which sounds terrifying!), but he would really just wake up and cry and cry and cry in the night. So we were glad when the Tamiflu was gone and the flu was gone. My doctor put me on Tamiflu, too, and thankfully, the rest of us were spared.

KK came to visit for a few days last week. We had some little things we needed to get done. I’ve mentioned a lot that my mom is a decorator, so she came back to help me take care of a couple of projects around here like getting the boys’ shared closet organized, painting a wall, touching up teeth marks on the crib and just playing with the boys. They were heartbroken when she left last week, but she’ll be back soon. She’s been feeling great and we’re so thankful that she’s able to visit as often as she is. Every single moment we have with her is incredibly special!

Hudson started baseball this weekend. He played soccer the past two springs, but he wasn’t a huge fan of soccer. He and Todd have been spending a lot of time throwing and catching on the weekends and he has been so excited to start baseball. He got some new cleats and his first pair of baseball pants. The first practice went well. He’s still a little timid, but every time he practices he gets a little more confident.

I’ve been going to bed every night around 9:00 or 9:30… and I’m a typical night owl. I love staying up late. We’ve been watching Celebrity Apprentice and The Bachelor on Monday nights, but I can’t stay up late enough to watch them both. I just get so restless at night. I’m sleeping okay, but waking up a few times a night to go to the bathroom. And a few times every week, I’ll move to the couch around 4:30 a.m. and watch TV and doze until the kids wake up. At my doctor appointment yesterday, it was confirmed that there’s no progress and we’ll just keep waiting. The goal is to make it to my due date and have a c-section that day. He’ll be here before we know it!

Friday Favorites!

My Day Designer Mini arrived this week and I am in love. I plan to use the mini and the full size edition together. I’ll use the mini on the go and when I travel, and keep the full size edition at home. I just love the spotty dots!

The Egg Nog Latte is back! This is huge news. Huge! I seriously wait all year for Starbucks to bring back the red cup and the egg nog latte, and imagine my massive disappointment a couple of weeks ago when I walked into Starbucks and the barista told me that Starbucks discontinued the egg nog latte this year. Serious disappointment. But! It’s back! It was even in the USA Today. Happy belated birthday to me. Now, go get an egg nog latte, so they never do this again!

We have a couple of fun weekends ahead and we’ll be gone for a couple of day trips, so we’ve decided to put up our Christmas tree tomorrow and get the house decorated! I can’t wait. Seriously, can’t wait! But now that I think about it, I am dreading the process of finding the burned out bulbs. Can someone invent some lifetime bulbs, please?

I love this room!

I ordered a couple of sweaters for my birthday with birthday money. They aren’t maternity sweaters, but I’m just thinking I’ll already have them in my closet for next winter. Around this point in all of my pregnancies, I start to daydream about all the pretty clothes I’d like to buy. So I took my birthday money and snatched up these two!

I’m eager to see if this sweater will stretch over my big bump! But it will be worth the wait next year, for sure!

I can probably wear this one for a few more weeks and just leave it open

I am loving this fun new tradition idea for Thanksgiving where you create a special table runner with handprints for your family. I may even start this for this year. It’s not super complicated or incredibly crafty. Just a cute, fun tradition!

What are you loving this week?

24 weeks and a baby name

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a pregnancy update, so I thought I’d do one now that I’m 24 weeks. My glucose test is next week. My belly and our baby boy are growing rapidly! This pregnancy is rolling along.

I’ve been feeling really good. I’m sore and my legs and hips get tired toward the end of the day. I have a lot of energy during the day, but I fall asleep around 9:30 every night, which is incredibly early for me. Todd and I are night owls and love staying up late watching TV. I fall asleep on the couch almost every night.

I’m sleeping well for the most part. Changing positions is getting to be a challenge, and Todd says I’m snoring now. Whoops. But I do feel rested. Baby boy seems to wake up every morning right when I open my eyes, and then he starts moving all around. (Or maybe it’s his movement that wakes me up and I just can’t really tell.)

I don’t have any specific cravings. I do like sweets, but they leave the worst taste in my mouth after I eat something. I love cheese and I love meat. But no real consistent cravings.

Hudson and Hayes are incredibly excited and talk about the baby all the time. Hudson likes to talk to the baby, and he has been doing the funniest thing. He asks me to open my mouth wide so he can shout into my mouth and the sound travels down to the baby. It’s a very interesting thought process, but it also makes a lot of sense. Despite me telling him that he can talk straight at my belly, he still thinks it makes more sense to talk into my mouth. I just laugh every time!

We’ve officially decided on a name and I thought I’d announce it here. Coming up with a 3rd boy name wasn’t super easy, but we ultimately decided not to use another “H” name. I like a few other “H” names, but none of them seemed right. And I didn’t want to choose a name just because it started with a certain letter. I wanted a name with some meaning and really wanted to use family names again.

We love the name we’ve chosen, and it’s so fun to hear the kids say his name.

baby name

His name is James Walker and we plan to call him James Walker. I hadn’t really ever considered a double name for a boy, but I just loved it when we first said it. James was Todd’s maternal grandfather and Walker is my brother’s name, and my dad’s middle name.

So, we’re pretty excited about our little James Walker! Now we’re ready to start counting down until when we meet him.

Halloween 2014

I’m not always on the ball when it comes to Halloween. There have been years when I’ve thrown something together at the last minute, and years when I’m way ahead and know exactly what the kids are going to be.

This year, as soon as the costumes came out in the catalogs and online, I let the boys start looking so they could decide. I don’t sew, so there was no chance I’d be making anything. Hudson and Hayes went back and forth on a few different options, but ultimately they decided on Buzz and Woody from Toy Story.

Hudson actually loves to coordinate costumes with Hayes, and I’m sure our years of doing this are numbered. But he only wanted to be something that had a “friend” that Hayes could wear. They’ve been obsessed with Toy Story for a couple of years now, so that’s what the decided.

On Friday morning, they were up bright and early, and I got them dressed in their costumes. Then they waited outside for Hudson’s ride to school. They just couldn’t wait! Their school does a little Halloween parade, so they dressed up and I was able to go watch.

That night, we all walked down to our neighborhood cul de sac for a little block party. The boys rode on a hay ride, we ate pizza, and RC and PC joined us for the fun.

RC always makes them smile!

And my little pumpkin heads!

After the party was over, I went to the house to hand out candy while Todd walked door to door with the boys. After about thirty minutes, we traded places and I walked with the boys. It had become pretty dark and Hudson was holding tight to my hand. He was pretty spooked.

And as we were walking on a quiet, dark street, just me with my precious boys, I just prayed that I would never forget that moment. Nothing unusual happened. There’s no real story to tell, except that it was just the three of us and they were trusting that their mommy would take care of them in the dark. And they were so excited to trick or treat. In some ways they’ve grown up so much, but in so many ways they are still so small and vulnerable. And I just loved that I was the one there to reassure them that we were going to be safe. And I was the one to talk to them about the bright moon. And I was there to hold their hands when the cars drove by.

It was a sweet moment, and the first year that we’ve split up. And while I do wish the four of us had been together instead of having to split up, I’m always so thankful for those quiet moments when we can have those sweet conversations and moments of trust.

We came home and sat on the back porch where everyone was allowed to eat five pieces of candy before going to bed. Hudson and Hayes both had the time of their lives. It was so fun to be in our new neighborhood and to get to sit on the front porch and pass out candy while our kids walked around and met the neighbors.

It’s true that kids change everything. I was never a “Halloween person” until I had kids. And experiencing it through their eyes is one of my favorite things now.
